World of Warships - WoWS Admiral

History
With the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, World War I officially came to an end and the defeat of Germany was formalized. As per the conditions of the document, the country's fleet was to be cut down to a minimum, and serious restrictions on the construction of new capital ships in terms of their number, water displacement, and main battery caliber were to be imposed.

In the 1920s–30s, German shipbuilders were charged with a challenging task—designing an all-in-one warship that, while conforming to the strict limitations of the Treaty, would still easily be able to disengage from battleships and confidently sink any existing heavy cruisers in battle.

The task was brilliantly accomplished, and in 1933, the resulting Panzerschiff (armored ship) Deutchland was commissioned into the Reichsmarine. The ship had the armament of a battleship, but the speed of a cruiser. Such an unusual combination of characteristics that didn't fall within any international standards of the time required a new classification. A nickname created not without any irony by the British press—"Pocket Battleship"—took root. The third and the most advanced ship of this series was Admiral Graf Spee.

Since the moment she was commissioned on January 6, 1936, until the middle of 1939, Admiral Graf Spee was the primary showpiece of the Kriegsmarine—she took part in parades and represented Germany during visits to other countries. Long before the beginning of the occupation of Poland, the Kriegsmarine's command, in strict confidence, had planned for their surface ships to conduct raiding operations in the Atlantic Ocean if worse came to worst and Great Britain declared war. The pocket battleships were to play the leading role in these sorties.

On August 21, 1939—days before the invasion of Poland—Admiral Graf Spee left the German port of Wilhelmshaven and set off to the South Atlantic. After a month of keeping a low profile, on September 25, the ship received the order to start raiding Allied shipping. Over the course of the following months, the cruiser managed to sink several ships.

By early October, the Allied navies had begun organizing an armed response to the German raider. London was quickest to react—three British forces were deployed to counter Admiral Graf Spee: four heavy cruisers, one battle cruiser, and one aircraft carrier. However, for almost 3 months, the German Panzerschiff successfully carried out her task while evading the enemy.

On December 13, 1939, in the vicinity of the River Plate's estuary, the first real naval battle of World War II broke out. Admiral Graf Spee engaged three British cruisers that, despite being inferior to her in terms of firepower, nevertheless managed to damage her. Forced to look for shelter, she escaped to neutral Uruguay.

However, the British had a firm grasp of the situation thanks to the skillful machinations of His Majesty's Diplomatic Service. The British Representatives masterfully manipulated the Germans by making arrangements for open negotiations with nearby Buenos Aires about the "possibility of the urgent acceptance of two capital ships," by which they pointedly implied Renown and Ark Royal.

The news about the imminent arrival of a battlecruiser left the crew of Admiral Graf Spee with little hope for survival. Unable to break out towards their native waters, 4 days later, the crew scuttled Admiral Graf Spee not far from Montevideo.
You can learn more about the Battle of the River Plate in our video.

Dockyard

The main feature of Update 0.9.5 is the new Dockyard in the Port of Hamburg, where you will be able to construct two German ships at once—VI Admiral Graf Spee and VIII Odin.

Dockyard basics:
  • The event will span two updates—0.9.5 and 0.9.6.
  • Ship construction at the Dockyard consists of 20 shipbuilding phases. You can advance through these by completing Directives or spending 1,750 doubloons on each phase.
  • The reward for completing phase 10 is VI Admiral Graf Spee in the War Paint camouflage.
  • In total, you can complete 18 out of 20 shipbuilding phases by finishing Directives. You need to spend doubloons to progress through at least two of the 20 phases.
  • After completing phase 20, you will receive VIII Odin

By completing the Directives, you'll obtain VI Admiral Graf Spee and various other rewards from the Dockyard, as well as get a massive discount on VIII Odin.

Updated Combat Missions

In Update 0.9.5, we've significantly improved the combat missions.
  • The interface has been revamped.
  • Added combat missions with an "or" condition. In such missions, one of two given conditions needs to be fulfilled in order to get the reward. E.g. earn 10,000 Base XP "or" destroy 10 enemy ships. Thus, you will be able to choose which of the conditions you prefer, and fulfill the requirement playing the most suitable ships.
  • Changed the way combat missions are displayed on the post-battle statistics screen: the interface has been revamped, and the possibility to track combat mission progress in a separate window has been added.

The rewards have also been updated: during summer, you’ll also earn Steel in addition to Coal when you complete combat missions! More details about that, as well as other changes to Daily Missions, will be available in the dedicated article covering combat missions.
Please note: the new system is still being tested, so the final rewards may differ. We'll be closely watching the results and taking player feedback into account when making decisions about the further development of Daily Missions.
Armory Update

  • The interface has been revamped. Navigating between sections will now be easier and more convenient.
  • Added the possibility to preview ships and camouflages in the Port before purchasing.
The details of these changes will be published in a dedicated article.

Unique Upgrades

In 0.9.5, we're starting the process of updating the unique upgrades. The current concept provides an additional opportunity to mount an upgrade with special-but-balanced bonuses in comparison with regular upgrades.

These changes will balance the effectiveness of the various unique upgrades, while preserving the unique gameplay of each ship.

List of changes
Enhanced Armaments (Yueyang, fifth slot)
  • The bonus that reduces the main battery reload time has been increased from 10 to 15%.
  • Removed penalties on the action time of ship consumables.
  • Added a bonus increasing the action time of Surveillance Radar.
  • Added a bonus increasing smoke screen dispersion time by 20%.
  • Removed a bonus that reduced the torpedo tube reload time.
The older version of this upgrade was unpopular because of low competitiveness with other upgrades in the slot. The new variant of the upgrade offers more aggressive gameplay with an accent on consumables and main battery instead of the concealment upgrade which involves a safe playstyle.

Heavyweight Artillery (Khabarovsk, fifth slot)
  • Removed a penalty that reduced the traverse speed of her main turrets.
  • The bonus applied to the main battery’s firing range increased from 8 to 10%.
  • Added a 20% penalty to the action time of the ship’s consumables.
The upgrade now places much stronger emphasis on aggressive gameplay due to the enhanced main battery guns and reduced effectiveness of consumables.

Enhanced Countermeasures (Worcester, sixth slot)
  • Moved from the fifth to the sixth slot.
  • Removed all bonuses on the action time of her consumables.
  • Added a bonus reducing the reload time of the Priority AA sector by 20%.
  • Added a bonus reducing the reload time of ship consumables by 20%.
  • Added a bonus increasing the number of the ship's consumable charges by one.
The upgrade moved from the fifth to the sixth slot, which means that it no longer has to compete with other upgrades that provide bonuses to maneuverability and detectability. The new parameters emphasize the role of this ship as a versatile cruiser.

Enhanced Propulsion (Des Moines, sixth slot)
  • Reduced the bonus to engine power. Now, with the unique upgrade and the “Propulsion Modification 1” upgrade, it’ll take the cruiser 21% more time to reach maximum forward speed, and it’ll take three times more time to reach maximum backward speed. The ship will still be gaining speed faster with these two upgrades compared to having just one of them. At the same time, the time it takes the ship to reach 1/2 and 3/4 of her speed remains almost the same.
  • Removed a penalty on the action time of Surveillance Radar.
The bonus to engine power was lowered to reduce the excessive effectiveness of the upgrade. The penalty to the duration of Surveillance Radar didn’t affect the use and effectiveness of the upgrade. Players will now choose between this unique upgrade and an upgrade that increases firepower.

Enhanced Main Armaments (Großer Kurfürst, sixth slot)
  • The bonus reducing the main battery’s reload time has been decreased from 15 to 10%.
  • Removed a penalty that reduced the traverse speed of her main turrets.
Enhanced Damage Control System (Montana, fifth slot)
  • The bonus reducing fire extinguishing time has been decreased from 15 to 10%.
  • The bonus reducing flooding recovery time has been decreased from 30 to 10%.
Additional Main Battery Loader (République, sixth slot)
  • Removed a penalty that reduced the traverse speed of her main turrets.
Accelerated Torpedo Tube Reload (Shimakaze, sixth slot)
  • The penalty reducing the torpedo tube traverse speed has been decreased from 80 to 70%.
Concerning X Großer Kurfürst, X Montana, X République, and X Shimakaze, balance changes designed to compensate for the excessive or insufficient effectiveness of their unique upgrades were made.
Expect changes to the unique upgrades of other ships in the coming updates.

Changes in the Soviet Cruiser Branch

Update 0.9.5 will see the Soviet cruiser branch split into two sub-branches. X Moskva is a heavy cruiser, and she is going to leave the light cruiser branch and acquire the status of special ship that's available in exchange for Coal. She'll be replaced in the tech tree by light cruiser X Alexander Nevsky. V Kirov will also leave the branch to become a Premium ship. She'll be replaced by V Kotovsky. The Premium version of Kirov is based on her standard hull that historically existed. The ship’s AA armament is the same as for her standard hull, while all of her other characteristics are same as for her researchable hull. At the same time, it will be possible to choose between the Spotting Aircraft and Fighter consumables.

Details on changes
  • Cruiser X Moskva will acquire the status of being a special ship. This means that the base cost of the post-battle service of this ship will be reduced from 180,000 to 90,000 credits, and Commanders from other ships of the same nation can be assigned to her without any penalties or retraining requirements.
  • You'll receive cruiser X Moskva under the following circumstances: if you've already researched but haven't yet purchased her; if you sold her; or if you’ve had the branch reset through the Research Bureau.
  • If your progress through the Soviet cruiser branch has been reset, the Research Point bonus will be transferred to X Alexander Nevsky.
  • The unique upgrade and combat mission for cruiser X Moskva, as well as any permanent camouflages you’ve purchased, will be preserved. If the Type 20 permanent camouflage hasn't yet been purchased, it will be added.
  • The Commander of cruiser X Moskva will preserve his specialization.
  • Cruiser X Alexander Nevsky can be obtained only after she has been researched and purchased in the Tech Tree.
  • The same rules apply to cruiser V Kirov and her tech tree replacement V Kotovsky, except that Kirov will become a Premium ship instead of a special ship.

World of Warships - WoWS Admiral

The main feature of Update 0.9.5 is the Dockyard in the Hamburg Port, where two German ships will be constructed simultaneously:
  • VI Admiral Graf Spee—the famous "pocket battleship." A formidable warrior armed with torpedo launchers and powerful 283 mm caliber artillery.
  • VIII Odin—a new battleship. An excellent medium- and close-range fighter, carrying nine 305 mm guns that reload quickly for a battleship, a trademark German secondary battery, torpedo launchers, and the Hydroacoustic Search consumable.
Rules of the Event ● Directives ● Rewards

Rules of the Event
We've simplified the rules of this iteration of the Dockyard:
  • The event will span two updates—0.9.5 and 0.9.6.
  • The construction process of the Dockyard is comprised of 20 phases.
  • Each shipbuilding phase can be completed by finishing Directives or spending 1,750 per phase.
  • The reward for reaching phase 10 is VI Admiral Graf Spee with her War Paint camouflage.

  • In total, you can complete 18 out of 20 shipbuilding phases by finishing Directives without using doubloons.
  • VIII Odin and her War Paint camouflage awaits you upon completing the 20th phase.

For completing all the Directives, players can obtain VI Admiral Graf Spee, a multitude of other Dockyard rewards, and earn an excellent discount on VIII Odin.
If you already have VI Admiral Graf Spee in your Port, you will receive compensation in the form of credits, as well as the camouflage, Commander, and a Port slot.

Directives
The new game event has 73 missions spread across six Directives. The first Directive will become available with the release of Update 0.9.5, while those that follow will be unlocked each week. The Directives are available from June 11 through August 4.

Each Directive will allow you to complete three shipbuilding phases:
  • Two shipbuilding phases can be completed by finishing specific missions that form part of the Directive.
  • One shipbuilding phase can be completed by finishing the entire Directive.
Detailed information about the Directives is available in the game client.
Rewards
By only finishing missions of the Directives, players can complete 18 out of 20 shipbuilding phases and obtain the corresponding rewards at the Dockyard.

By playing and finishing the first two Directives, you can complete up to six shipbuilding phases and obtain the following rewards:
  • 7,500 Coal
  • 1 day of Warships Premium Account
  • 15x Hunter camouflages
  • 2x Gift containers

Finishing four out of the six Directives will result in you completing up to 12 shipbuilding phases and obtaining Admiral Graf Spee in the War Paint camouflage, as well as a 10-skill-point Commander and other valuable items, which when combined with previous rewards gives you a total:
  • VI Admiral Graf Spee in the War Paint camouflage with a 10-skill-point Commander
  • 7,500 Coal
  • 4 days of Warships Premium Account
  • 10x each of the following signals: Hydra and Basilisk
  • 10,000 Free XP
  • 15x Hunter camouflages
  • 5x Gift containers holding five special signals each

Finishing all of the event's Directives will result in you completing up to 18 shipbuilding phases and provide you the maximum 90% discount on Odin, as well as some additional signals, giving you a grand total of:
  • 90% discount on VIII Odin
  • VI Admiral Graf Spee in the War Paint camouflage with a 10-skill-point Commander
  • 7,500 Coal
  • 4 days of Warships Premium Account
  • 10x each of the following signals: Hydra, Basilisk, Scylla, Leviathan, Dragon, Red Dragon, and Ouroboros
  • 10,000 Free XP
  • 15x Hunter camouflages
  • 5x Gift containers

In order to complete the 19th and 20th phases, apart from finishing all the event's Directives, you'll need to purchase any two shipbuilding phases by spending doubloons. It doesn't matter when you purchase these two phases: at the end of the building process or at any other time.
  • Сompleting the 19th shipbuilding phase will bring you 10,000 Coal.
  • Battleship VIII Odin awaits you upon completing the 20th phase.

You can purchase all the shipbuilding phases in exchange for doubloons and receive all the available rewards without waiting. If you decide to complete shipbuilding at the Dockyard by using doubloons, you can still progress through the Directives. However, in that case, instead of the usual rewards for completing the shipbuilding phases, you'll get 250 Steel for each completed phase. In total, you can earn up to 4,500 Steel.
Those who want to purchase the shipbuilding phases at a discount can obtain the Starter Pack, which includes the first eight shipbuilding phases, in exchange for 8,000 doubloons. However, you can only purchase it prior to completing the first shipbuilding phase by any other means.

World of Warships - WoWS Admiral

Submarines have come a long way and changed significantly since the first tests, but a lot of work still remains to be done before they can become a full-fledged unit type.

While we continue configuring the submarines, you're welcome to try them out in Submarine Battles.

Key Points
  • Submarine Battles are a separate battle type for Tier VI ships, available from May 27 through June 24.
  • You'll receive Submarine Tokens for your first login each day.
  • The Tokens can be exchanged in the Armory for random bundles, one of which contains three rental submarines.
  • New game mechanics: dive and ascend, sonar pings, battery charge, depth charges, and Hydrophone.
  • A special combat mission that will reward you with XP and credits for cruisers, destroyers, battleships, and aircraft carriers.

Submarine Battles
Starts: Wed. 27 May 06:00 CEST (UTC+2)
Ends: Wed. 24 Jun. 06:00 CEST (UTC+2)

Select Submarine Battles, select any Tier VI ship, and fight against submarines!

To stand at the helm of a submarine yourself, you need to collect and use Submarine Tokens. These Tokens will be credited upon your first login each day during the run of Submarine Battles. You can exchange Submarine Tokens for random bundles in the Armory. One of the seven available random bundles will drop three 21-day rental submarines, each with a special 19-skill-point Commander. The remaining bundles will drop 500 Coal each.

A special combat mission for all ship types, with the exception of submarines, is available in Submarine Battles. It will grant you +100% XP and +25% credits for the first five battles each day.
The rental submarines will be removed from your account once the rental period expires, or with the release of Update 0.9.6.

Playing Submarines
Submarines are fragile and cautious hunters. Diving depth affects their detectability, viewing range, and interaction possibilities with other submarines and ships. Maneuver, change your diving depth, hide from your enemies, and surprise them with stealth attacks from the flanks.

Submarines have a small HP pool, so stick to the flanks and attack your opponents from afar or while submerged.

Keep an eye on all enemy destroyers, and cruisers such as VI Dallas, VI Budyonny, VI Leander, and VI Perth, as they are carrying depth charges. Change position often, try to enlist the support of your teammates, and use the Maximum Depth consumable in case of immediate danger.

The primary targets for submarines should be sluggish ships—any agile targets that are capable of making anti-torpedo maneuvers are difficult to hit.

Submarine Controls
  • The W, A, S, and D keys control horizontal movement.
  • Press F to ascend.
  • Press C to dive.
  • Ctrl+F and Ctrl+C lock the horizontal rudders to either ascend or dive.
  • 1—sonar pings.
  • 2—torpedoes.
  • Press 1 again to choose between two sonar ping options: wide and slow, or narrow and fast.

Surfaced and Submerged Submarines
Submarines can move between two operational levels: surfaced and submerged (6 meters and deeper).

A submarine on the surface can be hit with shells, ship- and airborne torpedoes, aerial bombs, and rockets. Emitting sonar pings while on the surface increases the submarine's detectability more significantly than while underwater. Capturing Key Areas is only possible when surfaced.

When a submarine dives deeper than 6 meters, her speed drops significantly, visibility reduces twofold, and viewing range decreases to the value of her torpedo range. While submerged a submarine can detect ships only within a certain radius, provided that they are within her direct line of sight, and can't detect aircraft.

A submarine at depths of 30 meters and greater can be detected only by ships with Hydroacoustic Search and other submarines, while the Hydrophones on destroyers allows them to determine the approximate location of a submarine.

The Maximum Depth consumable enables you to temporarily dive to 50–80 meters. At this depth, the damage of depth charges is reduced, and the submarine's location cannot be determined by Hydrophone anymore.

Acoustic Homing Torpedoes
The main armament carried by submarines is acoustic homing torpedoes. New mechanics—sonar pings—will help you increase the potential effectiveness of your torpedo salvos. Hit special indicators located at the bow and stern of an enemy ship with your sonar pings. By doing so, your torpedoes will be guided to the target and deal more damage if they strike. Torpedoes can ascend from the depths and hit an enemy only with the help of an active effect from a sonar ping.

  • A sub can fire torpedoes and emit sonar pings from any depth. When submerged, a sonar ping can be emitted in any direction, even at targets above or below the sub.
  • After selecting sonar pings, you'll see two indicators appear at the bow and stern of the target ship. Aim for these indicators, take a lead on the target, and click the left mouse button. Please note: unlike when firing shells, the camera won't follow the targeted ship automatically.
  • Emitting sonar pings temporarily increases a submarine's visibility.
  • A successful hit on one of a ship’s two indicators will make the torpedo home in on the target.
  • If you hit both indicators, torpedoes will assume the optimal depth to hit vulnerable spots and will be able to inflict more damage to citadel or anti-torpedo defenses.
  • The effect of a successful ping hit remains active for 20–30 seconds, depending on the exact submarine. Hitting an indicator with another sonar ping will reset its action time.

If you attack a ship from afar, keep emitting sonar pings to refresh their effect while your torpedoes are traveling to their target. Remember that guiding your torpedo to its target with the help of sonar pings doesn't guarantee a hit.
  • Torpedoes have very poor maneuverability. They lose speed when turning and are not capable of catching up to a ship that's actively maneuvering.
  • Upon approaching the target to a distance of approximately 1 km, torpedo homing gets disabled and it will travel straight ahead. If the enemy changes speed or course during this time, your torpedo might miss it.
Battery Charge
Battery charge is needed to emit sonar pings. The submarine’s battery charge is depleted with each ping, as well as when moving underwater at speeds higher than 1/4.
  • To restore battery power, ascend to the surface, or reduce your speed to 1/4.
  • If you deplete your battery charge, you won't be able to emit sonar pings, but you will still be able to move at any speed.

Playing Against Submarines
All destroyers, and cruisers VI Dallas, VI Budyonny, VI Leander, and VI Perth are armed with depth charges. This countermeasure can hit submerged submarines.
  • At depths of up to 6 meters, a submarine can be hit with shells, ship- and airborne torpedoes, aerial bombs, and rockets.
  • High-explosive shells are the most effective shell type to deploy against submarines. They will inflict damage to a submarine even when not directly striking it. Falling in the sub's vicinity is enough, thanks to the shell's fragmentation damage area.

  • Constantly change course and try to keep your bow or aft pointed towards a submarine. This will make it more difficult for them to hit the second point on your ship's hull with a sonar ping.
  • If a submarine is detected with the help of the Fighter or Spotting Aircraft consumables, the planes will start to follow it. They will circle over its last spotted location if the submarine dives.
  • The Hydroacoustic Search consumable can detect a submarine at any depth.

Hydrophone and Depth Charges
  • A destroyer's Hydrophone will track the movements of a submarine within a radius of 4–5 km around the ship. The sub's approximate location is shown with a special marker. The closer the ship is to the submarine, the more frequently all incoming information will be updated.
  • Cruisers don't have Hydrophone, but they are equipped with Hydroacoustic Search, which is capable of detecting submarines at any depth.
  • Approach the approximate location of the submarine and release your depth charges using the G key.
  • You have several charges at your disposal that can be activated consecutively. Keep in mind, however, that depth charges take time to reload. You won't be able to hit a submerged submarine during this time.
  • If a submarine hides at the maximum depth of more than 50 meters, the damage from depth charge hits will be reduced, but still remains quite considerable.

In the grim darkness of the near past, there was only war. So maybe it’s not wholly weird that World Of Warships has announced a Warhammer 40,000 crossover. The free-to-play multiplayer shipshooter will get WH40K-themed ships, commanders, camouflages, patches, flags, and such as part of an update coming in June. It is wild to see this and remember that Games Workshop ever seemed protective of licensing 40K to games.
