Cyber Monday 2017

After a weekend of gorging yourself on turkey and elbowing people in the face to get that last discounted something or other in the shops, now it’s time to settle in and continue those deal hunts from the comfort of your own home. For today is Cyber Monday, the day that’s reserved for purely online-only deals following the shopping bonanza that was Black Friday.

This year, we’ve done the hard work for you, as we’ve scoured the web for the best Cyber Monday deals money can buy. These aren’t just re-heated Black Friday deals, either, as most retailers usually have completely separate discounts running today, making it a great time to pick up another bargain if none of the deals last week took your fancy. As always, we’ll be updating this article throughout the day, so make sure to check back at regular intervals just in case something new appears. We’ve also got tips on the best places to browse, and how to find out if those hot discounts are really as good as they seem.

rlheader

Update Night is a fortnightly column in which Rich McCormick revisits games to find out whether they’ve been changed for better or worse.>

Rocket League feels less like a game that was designed and more like something that was discovered. Like car football had always existed, floating around in the ether as a conceptual form that humans just get>, and that developers Psyonix was simply the first to capture it in digital amber.

It s that perfection of form that made Rocket League such a joy to play on its release in 2015. But it s also that that initial perfection that makes the game difficult to mechanically improve with patches and updates. It s car football what else do you need to add? (more…)

Autumn is here and Rocket League [official site] certainly has noticed, last night launching its big Autumn Update with new arenas for carball as well as some decent new features. We get to ball around a beautiful new farmyward sportszone, new regulation-shape versions of the Wasteland and Starbase ARC arenas, and day and snowy variants of several other maps. That’s the magic of doing sports in cars under a dome: seasons cannot ruin the sports. Other big bits include local multiplayer support for LAN parties, an AI director for spectator mode, and loads of new cosmetic bits to customise your brum-brum. (more…)

An autumnal farmyard map will come to Rocket League [official site] with the next big update alongside those promised standardised versions of oddly-shaped carball pitches, developers Psyonix have confirmed. Last night they announced that the Autumn Update will launch on September 28th, and also started revealing what will follow that. They’re working on an in-game tournament system, which will likely hit beta this year then launch in 2018, and are creating a new party system that might one day lead to cross-platform parties. For now, look at this pretty farm: (more…)

Novelty can be novel but Rocket League is falling back on the familiar. Developers Psyonix are planning to switch the carball ’em up’s map rotation to only standard-shaped arenas, not any with dips or knobbly bits or other weird tricks. And like they did with NeoTokyo earlier this year, they’re making standardised versions of the Wasteland and Starbase ARC irregular arenas. Psyonix say they aren’t that popular and the inconsistency detracts from the game. Both the Competitive and Casual modes will feature standard arenas only, though oddities will still be playable in private and offline matches as well as some on the experimental Rocket Labs playlist. Rocket League bans

Rocket League [official site] players will face automatic bans if they use certain words in chat under new anti-harassment rules introduced this week. Developer Psyonix has come up with a list of 20 words, including racial slurs, that players will be punished for using, and plan to expand the list in future.

Under the ‘Language Ban’ system, each word on the list (which is secret) will have a different threshold for punishment. Some you might get away with using once or twice, but you won’t be so lucky with others. And if you’re a repeat offender you’ll receive a permanent ban from the game. It’s all automated, and based on whether the words in question show up on in-game reports you make about other players (or other players make about you).
