Greetings Terrarians!

Happy Halloween from all of us to all of you! Halloween has always been one of our favorite times of the year - especially when we get to see all of the crazy costumes, creepy decorations, and creative pumpkins that Terrarians put together each year. So, whether you entered the annual Halloween Contest or not... please be sure to share your spookiest creations with us! On the development side of things, we do have some more clarity on timing to share this month. There are still a lot of moving parts involved that could adjust things, but it is starting to feel like we know the general boundaries. More on that in a bit. For now, let's get set to dive into another month of Terraria news...

Trick or treat!

Hello again, everyone. Last month, we shared that we were quite close to the content complete/Release Candidate stage. Things are still looking pretty decent in that regard, enough so that parallel beta testing is underway on most platforms so that we can go ahead and capture and fix bugs as they arrive rather than a strictly sequential process. Additional work has been underway this month focused on localization - not only for the new content, but also weaving in three new languages and the localization community review conducted over the past year or so. This should ulimately yield better translations for existing content that more accurately take game context into account. We are also thrilled to at long last be able to provide Terraria in Korean, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese. This area of game development is often more complex than it seems, so we are very glad that it is NEARLY done!

That leads us to the third topic - one that we all know and love - planning for things like first party submissions and any additional work needed by our global partners in order to enable a global sync launch. To put it mildly and not to bore anyone with the details, there are a LOT of moving parts and interdependencies that we have to manage in this process. It is also not a very quick system to navigate and it comes with a lot of unknowns (you can never say what a given first party might take issue with... requiring additional fixes... and another round of submissions). We do have a plan in place, if all goes perfectly to schedule, for when those submissions might occur. Beyond that, it is honestly a wild card as to how long it takes - a wild card with some reasonable boundaries, but still a wild card. Toss in the Holidays for everyone involved (e.g. at some point, the first party reviewers are gone for the year), and it gets even messier.

It is impossible to predict at this point where things will fall in that window. There are far too many moving parts that could break either for us or against us to say at this time. However, we do feel good about the time window itself.

Again, we are very aware that this update has taken far too long to reach completion - all we can do is share our apology for that time span and just know that we are doing our best to get it out as quickly as we can. We also cannot wait to share the plans for the future as well, once the update is out and all fixed up post launch.

Hello everyone!

On November 1st the monthly update release of tModLoader will go live. As always we are grateful for the massive amount of community participation in developing and testing new features each month.

This last month we hosted our third official mod jam on our Discord server. The theme was "Anything Can Happen on Halloween!" and we had several spooky mod submissions. We thank everyone who participated and hope it was fun and a great practice! We encourage players to check out the mod jam submissions on the workshop here! If you are interested in participating in the next mod jam, be sure to come to Discord to be notified.

This month's release contains mostly bug fixes and smaller features. We've fixed several UI inconsistencies, fixed a major sound volume issue, and even fixed major issues with how liquids are drawn, especially around sloped tiles. We've also implemented changes to support launching the game on ARM processors, which should prove useful to those looking to host dedicated servers on ARM machines.

For modders, this month's release contains a few new features, most notably new API for modifying potion delay values. Other new features include more fixes for biome conversion and support for uploading server-side mods in-game. As usual, we'd like to encourage modders to test out new tModLoader features on the preview branch if they are relevant to your mod. Major features in preview are listed on our Discord.

Recently, members of the Terraria Modding Community have put together a Terraria Direct Modding Showcase. This new video series highlights new Terraria modding releases and announcements and it is definitely one to keep an eye on if you are a fan of modded Terraria!

Here is a brief overview of the vision for the Terraria Direct series, straight from its creator:

“The aim of this project is to be as close of a reflection of the modding community as possible. I try to have as much variety as possible, showcasing both big, awaited projects, as well as giving the spotlight to mods and projects that may not yet have a community formed around them. Same thing with the creators that participated in the event.

Everything was made by awesome members of the community, from the music made by SkippyZii, to the assets made by Tubbsy, and of course all of the development teams that were kind enough to work together on this.

I'm really trying with this event to show more of the modding community, and make people excited about it!”

Over the past few months, we have made a considerable number of tweaks to mobile’s touch controls. In particular, our main focus recently has been making our many customization options both easier to use & find. We wanted to share one aspect of the fruits of our labour with you this month, that being our overhaul of the virtual controls editor. Here’s a video of it in action:

Notable changes to this editor are as follows:​

• New defaults! We now have “Simplified”, “Advanced”, and “Custom” schemes to choose from.
  
• Keep in mind the schemes shown are actively being worked on, and subject to change.
  
• When launching the game for the first time, you are now prompted to choose a control loadout.
  
• We have also added a “Controls” option to the pause menu to make them easier to find.
  
• The editor interface itself has been considerably tidied.
  
• You now place individual buttons / sticks / radials, and customize their size / actions they perform from a separate menu. No more page switches for size.
  
• This cuts down significantly on clutter, and makes the editor much more presentable overall.
  
• You can now copy schemes between loadouts. Good if you want to preserve the same button layout but slightly change what they do - this way, you don’t have to manually rebuild your scheme.

You can expect to see these changes - and more - alongside the rest of the 1.4.5 update.

SPIEL ESSEN RECAP
We’ve just returned from an incredible few days in Germany for Spiel Essen! A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth, checked out the production sample of Terraria: The Board Game, and shared your enthusiasm for all things Terraria. Meeting so many of you in person was truly wonderful.

Massive thanks to our amazing demo team for helping us run the booth throughout the show. With over 220,000 visitors across four days, it was as exhausting as it was exhilarating, but it’s definitely one of our favourite events of the year!

MANUFACTURING NEARING COMPLETION!
Last month, we shared production photos of the game’s trays, dice, and miniatures. Since then, the factory has been busy producing all the cardboard components including cards, punchboards, and player reference sheets.



DELUXE NEOPRENE UPGRADE
Developing the Hellstone Pledge deluxe player mats has been quite the journey; over eight months of testing, refining, and problem-solving! To our knowledge, no one has used dual-layer neoprene quite like this before.

Originally, we used traditional sublimation printing, but the colours weren’t vibrant enough and aligning the layers proved tricky. After lots of experimentation by the Gameland team, we’ve switched to a new approach: a thin PU top layer with UV printing.

This change gives us thicker and more vibrant mats with much higher resolution printing, plus laser-cut edges mean no fraying and thus no stitching required. The result feels like a true upgrade from the previous design, and we are really happy with the outcome.

Below is a comparison of the two approaches; like any physical product, it’s always worth spending a little extra time to get the very best outcome.

PUSH-FIT BOSSES
At Spiel Essen, we received samples of the final mold-cast bosses, and they have turned out nicely! The modular, push-fit design is sturdy and satisfying to assemble and disassemble. Over the weekend, we rebuilt them hundreds of times, and they’ve held up perfectly with no loosening of the push-fit mechanism.

BIOME TILE PUNCHBOARDS
We expected the copy of the game provided to us at Essen to be a final MPC (Manufacturer Production Copy). During the show, we noticed that the laminate coating on the biome tiles was peeling; this would have been a major manufacturing issue requiring re-manufacture of all the affected components (over 150,000 punchboards), so we immediately met face-to-face with Gameland’s CEO to investigate.

Thankfully, it turned out that the Essen copy was laminated using a different machine than the one used for final production. Gameland has confirmed this doesn’t affect the mass-production copies, but we’ll need to review another ‘true’ MPC before shipping, to ensure everything meets our high standards.

SOMETHING FROM THE ARCHIVES
A couple of week ago, Chris unearthed his original design notebook from the very first weeks of the game’s development, over 2½ years ago! It’s fascinating to see how some ideas evolved while others, like transparent cards for player progression, were there from day one.

TIMELINE
Gameland have informed us that our final MPC (Manufacturer Production Copy) will be ready on 6th November, a few weeks later than they originally predicted. This is mainly due to delays in eProofs being provided to us and foiling processes taking longer than anticipated, for which Gameland have apologised - they are working diligently to finish the production run as quickly as possible, while maintaining the same high level of quality control.

If this MPC copy is 100% correct and can be approved, we have been informed that the games will be available for pickup from the factory (in China) around 15th November. Overground fulfilment to backers in Asia will begin immediately, and games to other regions will be loaded onto boats as soon as possible thereafter. If you’re a backer, be sure to keep your eyes out for mini-updates over the next few weeks.

Greetings Terrarians!

We have one foot already into the Fall season - our favorite season of the year! - and we are drawing ever closer to the release of Terraria 1.4.5. More on that below. We are also getting really close to the release of the Terraria Board Game in November. The end of the year is setting up to be quite eventful indeed! We are also already setting the stage for what lies ahead in 2026 - Terraria's 15th Anniversary year. We hope we can bring some more cool stuff your way as a result of those plans, but that will have to wait for another day. For now, let's dive in to the latest and greatest news in the world of Terraria!

What's in store this time...

The team has been hard at work this month, aiming to reach the "content complete" (also known as the Release Candidate) stage within the next couple of weeks. What does that mean, exactly? Well, that means that - at that point - we will have officially added all of the new content/features/etc. that will make it into Terraria 1.4.5. After that, all that is left to do is testing, tweaking, and bug fixing. Of course, that testing/fixing process takes a good amount of time and is somewhat unpredictable (we had some pretty nasty tickets emerge just this past week, for example). Once we reach "content complete" and we have a bit of time to focus on fixing, we should have a much better sense of precisely when Terraria 1.4.5 will reach completion. We are working as closely as possible with our partners in parallel to try and shorten the time needed on the backend for first party submissions, localization, etc. - as, again, our goal for 1.4.5 is a global synchronized launch.

All that said, reaching content complete is a major milestone and we are truly at the final stages now. We know this update has taken far too long to get out to you all, and we are sorry for that. We do hope that you enjoy it once it is out - and that you are excited for what else is in store for the future of Terraria. More on that in the months ahead. For now, we are all in on the push to get this update out to you as quickly as possible!

We've seen many mod makers showcasing their new achievement art this last month and look forward to seeing them in-game. As usual, we'd like to encourage modders to test out new tModLoader features on the preview branch if they are relevant to your mod. Major features in preview are listed on our Discord.

Modders and users should also keep an eye out for our monthly Steam announcement on the 1st where a complete listing of bug fixes and API changes for this month's release will be listed. The in-game news button on the main menu will direct you directly to the announcement once it is live.

Once again, another month has flown by as we work hand-in-hand with Re-Logic to get 1.4.5 over the line. Work across multiple platforms is heating up as we near the Release Candidate stage and we really have to start planning for submissions and such in earnest. Hopefully, we will make it through that process cleanly and quickly - but it is always a bit unpredictable! We have some other things planned to share with you in the coming months, but that is a topic for another day. For now, we hope you are ready for a day sailing the open... skies?

Greetings Terrarians!

August was quite an eventful month for Team Terraria. We are well into the final push for Terraria 1.4.5 (for real, more on that below), and tickets are flying through the system. Several members of the team were also able to get together in person this month for the first time in many years - and for the first time ever with some folks. We have also been able to take care of a lot of planning for "what comes next" that will hopefully make for more consistency down the line. More on that in the future. With that said, we are all back home and ready to push this over the line.

Let's get right into it, shall we?

The Re-Logic team sat down this past month for one last parsing of the list of items remaining. Some things were deferred and others prioritized - all in an effort to arrive at something we have been looking forward to for quite a while: an internal launch window. Up until this point, the timing has been somewhat fluid based on additional content needs and unexpected bugs and such. We are not quite ready to share that timeline publicly just yet, but we have informed all of our internal partners (DR Studios, etc) of the plan so that we can work together to make this happen. More than ever before with 1.4.5, this is truly the final push.

Speaking of the release of Terraria 1.4.5, we are hoping for and planning on this being a global launch. What that means is that we are aiming to release on all platforms at or around the same time. That includes PC, Consoles, Mobile, China Mobile, etc. We are considering this somewhat of a "dry run" for the post-Crossplay world - which is something we hope to bring to fruition in very short order once 1.4.5 is out and all hotfixes are done. This requires a lot of coordination and planning for things like localization and submissions. As mentioned above, that process is well underway.

Happy to answer questions from anyone as we can, but things are really coming into focus now...


As for spoilers this month, the team thought it might be fun to look at some of the unsung work that goes into these updates. Bug fixes, tweaks, and changes that may not have a lot of visual flash and sizzle, but certainly impact the Terraria experience. We've shared an example below:

Ticket TER-2230 - "Better convey the existence of player defense multipliers in Expert/Master+ worlds"

The issue at play here is that Player Defense in Expert and Master+ worlds is subject to defense values being multiplied by 1.5 and 2.0 respectively, but this information is never conveyed to the player, resulting in players mistakenly believing defense becomes less and less valuable as the world difficulty increases. This leads to players making suboptimal build decisions. However, just increasing the defense number also can create confusion, so there needs to be some way to communicate both the increase effect and the fact that it is tied to a given difficulty level.

Lots of ideas and discussions then occur - do you just increase the numbers, do you do a hover-over tooltip, maybe a graphic element, etc. - until we arrive at a final decision, shown below:


In 1.4.5, the Defense Shield shape and colors change along with providing an explanation for how much damage is mitigated for that level of Defense on a given difficulty.

There are countless little things like the above that go into each update - alongside the bugs that we all know and hate being squashed underfoot. Speaking of bugs, nearly 900 bugs have been closed during the development process of 1.4.5!

Again, we are in the final push now. The content list is locked in, the bug and ticket list is locked in and the internal timeline is set. We are hopeful that we will be able to share something more publicly soon!

Last week, a handful of the Re-Logic team met up at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. What started as "Loki needs to go to Gamescom to handle some meetings and business-y stuff" turned into an opportunity for about half of our team to meet up with each other in person. This was the first time we have had even this many team members in one place since 2018 - and it was the first time for a lot of us to meet the wonderful @Kazzymodus ! Meetings were had, sights were seen, and the team reveled in the chance to connect with each other in a way that only being together in person can accomplish. We also had the chance to meet some of our favorite partners and developer friends for the first time. This was far, far overdue and we are already looking forward to the next time!

Before anyone asks, yes this was baked into the timeline and we had folks still churning away at tickets, so it should not have any impact on our plan regarding timing for 1.4.5.

Hello everyone!

On September 1st, the monthly update release of tModLoader will go live. As always we are grateful for the massive amount of community participation in developing and testing new features each month.

This month's release contains new interaction options for NPCs and projectiles, as well as a full rework of our code analyzer now called tModCodeAssist. We'd like to encourage modders to experiment with the new ModAchievement feature that will be available on the preview branch. We know modded achievements have been a highly requested feature for some time, so we are excited to see mods use them. Testing and feedback will help ensure that this feature is ready for everyone next month.

Modders and users should also keep an eye out for our monthly Steam announcement on the 1st where a complete listing of bug fixes and API changes for this month's release will be listed. The in-game news button on the main menu will direct you directly to the announcement once it is live.

DEVELOPMENT COMPLETE!
We are *very* excited to announce that apart from the rulebook (which is going through the layout and graphic design process), we have now submitted all of the game’s final files to the manufacturer! This is a massive milestone, and a huge relief, as it means that development is complete and that final production will begin shortly!

Wooden components, miniatures and dice have already been manufactured, so we’ve got a bit of a head start on the process, and we’re hoping that Gameland will be able to send us some photos of production over the coming weeks so that we can share the manufacturing process with you!

As well as the rulebook, the lion’s share of last month’s workload was performing ‘consistency passes’ on the game’s components. In the end, our consistency document contained almost 150 checks that need to be performed on every component.

There were also some additional checks for particularly tricky and/or technical components. For example, all transparent cards in the game have a ‘white layer’ (shown as pink in the GIF below) that is printed first to ensure that artwork areas are opaque – we needed to check that every transparent card’s white layer and art layer matched up exactly.

Foiled Box Lid
Here’s the game’s cover, complete with foil-stamped logo! Though it doesn’t seem so in these images, the ‘THE BOARD GAME’ subtitle is quite hard to read when foiled, so we’ve opted to keep that part foil-free for the final cover, but otherwise we think this looks beautiful, and will easily set the Kickstarter versions of the game apart from retail.



Character Pack
Hellstone backers will be receiving the wooden character pack as part of their pledge; below you can see how it can be swapped out for the foam block so that it can be stored inside the game box!

Hot enough out there for everyone? Seems like there is nowhere that is safe from the heat wave this summer! More time to stay cool, stay indoors, and play video games, right? On our end, work on Terraria 1.4.5 continues unabated - we think this month's spoiler is a particularly fun one. Still no dates to share, which we know will be disappointing to everyone, but we are doing our very best to get to that day as quickly as possible. That said, again we hope that you enjoy what we have in store for you this month... and hopefully it will not be too much longer before we can give you that launch window.

Let's dive right in and see what's in store this time!

The Re-Logic team continues to be hard at work whittling away at the pile of tickets. This month has seen quite a bit of effort focused on one of the new unique World Seeds. It is indeed a pesky one, given the odd ways it seems to interact with the worldgen. We are not quite ready to dive into the details of that one just yet, so you will have to remain in the dark for now. As to what we do have to show this month...

Inspired somewhat by the Kwad Racer Drone, the team has added a brand new RC Car that you can use to zip around your Terraria worlds. It can even climb backwalls! We cannot wait to see what crazy racetracks the Terraria community might come up with to challenge even the most daredevil drivers out there. Be sure to share them with us when the time comes!

This last month we hosted our first official mod jam on our Discord server and it was a mind-blowing success. The theme was "Game Tribute" and we were impressed with how many high quality submissions we had. We thank everyone who participated and hope it was fun and a great practice! We encourage players to check out the =Mod+Jam+Entry]mod jam submissions on the workshop here. If you are interested in participating in the next mod jam, be sure to come to Discord to be notified.

This month's release contains several notable features that mod makers can look forward to, such as the highly requested ModConfig.SaveConfig feature. UPDATED TIMELINE
TL;DR: We’re updating our estimated shipping date to November 2025.

In March, we revised our timeline, updating our estimated shipping date from June to August. We’ve been working as hard as we can to meet that goal, but we’re going to need some more time to ensure that the game is the very best it can be.

Why is the game taking longer than expected?
From a development point of view, reworking and improving the rulebook, updating the game’s boss mechanisms and preparing for the game’s consistency pass have taken longer than anticipated. Nothing has stalled - we’re making progress every day - but they’re complex, involved processes that move slowly and can’t be rushed without compromising the quality of the game. We’re confident that the time spent on these steps will be reflected in the final product, and if you’re interested in the details, you can read more in the ‘Development news’ section below.

Graphic design is deeply intertwined with development; it relies on the preceding steps being completed. We’re always doing as much as we can in parallel, but the design of a component can’t be 100% finalised until we’re sure of its content. For most of the game’s components, that’s not an issue, but for the game’s cards and rulebook, the final text must be locked in for the files to be generated and submitted for printing. The good news is that most of the game’s components (those with little or no text) *have* been finalised, so the cards and rulebook represent the lion’s share of the graphic design work remaining.

Terraria: The Board Game contains *lots* of components, the vast majority of which have been approved, but as with all large physical games, there have been a stubborn few that have required multiple rounds of physical prototyping. The King Slime miniature, for example, has gone through many rounds of alterations and improvements – there’s a drawer in the office that looks like a King Slime graveyard, filled with past iterations of the modular design! This miniature was recently approved, but it’s often the things you least expect that cause the most headaches. When you multiply these alterations and improvements across all of the components in the game, then add in the time it takes for samples to be sent and received, it can add considerable time to the process. In addition, our manufacturing partner’s print run estimate (i.e. the length of time it takes from approving all manufacturing files having pallets of games ready for pickup from the factory) was recently adjusted from 5 to 8 weeks, which we’ve needed to take into account.

Finally, we’re mindful that tariffs have affected sea freight demand; congestion on shipping routes and at ports can add time to the shipping process, so we’re also taking this possibility into consideration as we make our new timeline forecast.

What does this mean for backers?
It means that the game is going to take a bit longer to get to backers; we’re updating our estimated shipping date to November 2025. As we mentioned in March’s update, we back many projects ourselves and we know that delays can be frustrating, but we want to reassure you that it’s in pursuit of making the best game possible, and as always, we promise to keep backers in the loop throughout the whole process.

If you’ve backed the game, we really, really appreciate your patience; there’s just need one final push needed to get the game over the finish line.

OOH... SHINY PWNHAMMERS!
Our final stretch goal of the Kickstarter campaign was the addition of limited-edition, uniquely-numbered Pwnhammer cards for every backer – we just received photos of the sample cardsheet showing the beautiful holofoil effect!

SQUISHY SLIMES
Another stretch goal unlocked during the campaign was the ‘squishy slimes slain token – this soft, compressible rubber token can be used in place of a wound token when you’re tracking King Slime’s spawn condition. It’s very satisfying to fiddle with!

DEVELOPMENT NEWS
So, what’s left to be done from a development point of view?

Boss Cards
Our revamp of the boss cards and boss-related mechanics is almost complete; just a few more tests to go. As mentioned in previous updates, Allies now power up bosses via a ‘buff’ card – each turn, players must decide which space an Ally is added to, requiring interesting tactical decisions and discussions around the table.

While we make the final tweaks, the art and graphic design on these cards has been underway; you’ll find examples of WIP (but near-final) card designs below:



Each boss has 6 -double-sided cards, including spawning cards, setup and loot cards for 1-2 and 3-4 player games, forms, buffs and behaviours – we’ve just shown a few above. All of the KS-edition boss cards will have holofoil backgrounds to set off the art, sparing the text box areas so the wording remains easy to read. Holofoiled samples of the boss cards are on their way to us and we’ll share them next month!

Rulebook
This has been a tough nut to crack, but we’re nearly there. Our outside editor, Anthony, did a fantastic job in reordering and streamlining the structure of the rulebook, as well as helping us identify some edge rules that could be eliminated to make the gameplay experience smoother. Since the edited draft has been back with us, Chris has been working on finalising the rulebook, but this has been alongside game development and liaison with the manufacturer, so the process has taken quite a while.

Earlier this month, we sent the latest draft to the Brothers Murph (who recorded our second gameplay video above), and despite no prior knowledge of the game, they were able to set up and play the game with very few clarifying questions needing to be answered by the Paper Fort team; a huge relief!

Once the final draft edit of the rules is completed, it will need a consistency pass (more about that below), diagrams will be created and updated with the game’s final art assets and the document will need to be laid out; unlike some other components, graphic design work can’t properly start on the rulebook until the content is finalised. Following that, there will be some further blind testing of the rules and a final round of proof reading.

Consistency Passes
It’s amazing how easily terms can be inadvertently used ambiguously or interchangeably when creating a game with lots of cards and a detailed rulebook. We don’t want these issues to affect a player’s experience, so one of the final jobs before sending the files to print is to check them meticulously for consistency. If you were wondering what the most boring part of game design is, this might just be it, but it’s a hugely important stage of the process!

Did we say ‘draw a card’ in one place but ‘take a card’ somewhere else? Are bulleted and numbered lists all formatted in the same way? Are words capitalised in a cohesive way throughout? We keep a document that tracks every one of these considerations, and it currently contains over 100 checks that need to be performed on every icon, component and piece of text.

Below is just a small selection of the terms needing to be checked for consistency across the game.

Happy Summer! We are trying something new for this event, combining two of the most prominent types of events, art and building, into one! This event will be hosted via the Terraria Discord Server.

Event Rules

• Submissions must be themed around Summer in some way.,
  
• Submissions can be physical or digital. If you create your submission physically, submit a quality image of it. Make sure any text written on it is clear!,
  
• Submissions must be made by you! Using another person's artwork is NOT allowed!,
  
• The use of generative AI is also not allowed. You may be disqualified from all future events if you are caught breaking this rule.,
  
• If you choose to submit an in-game build, block cropping and mods that help with the building process (T-Edit, Quality of Terraria, DragonLens etc.) are allowed, but mods that affect the final product like modded blocks, effects, shaders, or texture packs are disallowed.,
  
• Submissions must be made during the duration of the event. We will not accept submissions created before the starting time of the event.,

Happy summertime everyone! Well, at least in the Northern Hemisphere. All hands remain on deck in regards to Terraria development. To get the tough part out of the way first, we still do not have a release date to give out. Every day is one day closer, of course, but we are trying to remain overly cautious and conservative in regards to giving out any timing. We do not want to repeat the mistake of giving out a timing window and then have things change and it not be accurate. So, we must once again ask for your continued patience as we do the hard work that needs to be done in order to ensure a quality update for everyone. Short of pushing crunch time on the team (which we are not going to do), things are proceeding as fast as they can at this point. With that said, we have a few fun spoilers this month that we hope everyone will enjoy. So, without further ado...

Let's see what is in store this month!

We have a pair of topics to cover in spoiler-land this month. First off, we have a handful of new furniture sets coming with the update - providing even more ways for players to customize their abode, arenas, and more. To give you a quick glimpse at what all goes into each of these sets, here is an advance look at the new Hallowed Furniture Set:

We may show off a few more of these little additions if time allows - but we hope this at least gives you a sense for one small addition coming with Terraria 1.4.5.

In case you missed it, the Palworld side of the Palworld x Terraria crossover launched yesterday. On July 1st the monthly update release of tModLoader will go live. As always we are grateful for the massive amount of community participation in developing and testing new features each month.

This month's release contains several notable features that mod makers can look forward to, such as loadout support for modded accessory slots new hooks for tile preview rendering. Users can use a new chat command to remove unloaded tiles in worlds that are from mods they are no longer using.

Modders and users should also keep an eye out for our monthly Steam announcement on the 1st where a complete listing of bug fixes and API changes for this month's release will be listed. The in-game news button on the main menu will direct you directly to the announcement once it is live.

UKGE RECAP

At the very end of May, the Paper Fort Games team travelled down to Birmingham for UK Games Expo. This year, over 40,000 people visited the show, the highest attendance in the history of the convention.

As always, we had a wonderful time meeting Terraria fans, backers, and those attendees who were discovering the game for the first time. The booth was packed for the whole weekend; thank you to everybody who stopped by, played the game, collected a slime balloon or had a go at our beanbag toss - we had a blast!

We had a bigger stand and more demos than ever before, and as a tiny team we needed to draft in some extra pairs of hands! We want to say a huge thank you to all the demo staff who helped us to make this a fun and memorable event for all involved!



In last month’s update, we shared some pictures of pre-production component samples that arrived just in time for UKGE. At the show, colleagues from our manufacturing partner dropped off additional samples that they had kindly brought in their suitcases; after many hundreds of emails back and forth it was lovely to see the team in person again!



We were running two demos of Terraria: The Board Game all day, every day of the convention; this provided the perfect opportunity to put these new components through their paces. We identified a couple of minor adjustments that needed to be made; these have already been implemented by the manufacturer (just one of the benefits of being able to chat about the components in person!).

For those of you who haven’t had a chance to see these new components in person, Chris has recorded a guided tour through our latest sample box, explaining how various components are organised, pointing out small but important changes that are being made and showing off some features that you won’t have seen yet… enjoy!

GAMEPLAY VIDEO
Speaking of videos, we’re currently finalising the logistics of filming our updated gameplay recording. In last month’s update, we asked what type of videos you’d like to see, and based on your comments, it sounds like a full playthrough is on the cards (no pun intended!). We’re very eager to share more of the game with those of you who haven’t had the chance to see it in person, and we’re excited at the possibility of being joined by a well-known Terraria fan…

BIOME TILE ICONOGRAPHY UPDATE
Previously, when blocks could be partially mined, we added a pip system to diggable blocks that indicated how many hits were required. Through playtesting, we’ve identified that these small pips can be hard to see, so they’ve been updated to match the chop icons on trees - a single, larger icon containing the dig value. It’s a small change, but a big improvement in terms of user experience.

DEVELOPMENT NEWS
So, what’s left to be done from a development point of view?

BOSS CARDS
As mentioned last month, as well as streamlining Boss behaviours and mechanics, we’ve been trying out a new idea that make a Boss’s spawned ally more than just another enemy token in the world. We’ve been testing a new idea whereby allies power up their Boss via a ‘buff’ card; the idea has been simplified and the boss cards redesigned so that the cards provide an interesting decision for players each turn (which buff do I place an ally token onto?) while also making the result of the buff easily visible in the usual flow of the Boss’s turn.



These are examples of prototype boss cards currently undergoing testing – once they are finalised, art and graphic design will be updated to match the rest of the game, and the final cards will be foiled for that premium boss feel!

RULEBOOK
The rulebook is one of the most important parts of a board game, but also one of the most difficult to get right. We’re still working on the updated version, ensuring that it is as concise as possible while covering everything that players need to know. It’s a delicate balance; we’re getting close but a bit more work is required before we are happy with it. Rest assured that once it’s ready, we’ll be sharing it with you, along with a summary of what’s changed rules-wise over the past few months. Thanks for bearing with us!

Greetings Terrarians!

May has come and gone already? Time is really flying this year - or maybe it's just us? Terraria turned 14 years old this month, which is crazy to think about - a massive thanks to each and every one of you for your support over the years! Anyway, another month of progress is in the books and the concerted effort (and extra hands on deck) towards tackling tickets is already paying off. Our rate of working through these has accelerated noticeably. There is still a good ways to go, but we are very pleased with the pace. We know that everyone is desperately wanting a release window. We discuss this very topic on a regular basis - ultimately, we don't want to ever cut corners, and we want to be very sure of any date/timing we give whenever it is ready for prime time... so just hang in there with us a bit longer. We know this update has taken a long time, and we thank you for that patience you show each month.

That said, let's dive into the latest and greatest, shall we?






Often, early game Terraria can feel a bit limiting in regards to gear choices. Sure, you will eventually find enough ore to slap together a cool new sword, or perhaps luck will favor you with a shiny drop from a chest hidden near the surface... but outside of getting desperate and turning to Wood gear, what choice do you have? This becomes even more of a factor on World Seeds with limited resources, such as Skyblock.

What if you could craft a nice early weapon out of the most common enemy that roams the plains and forests of Terraria - the humble slime? Well, in Terraria 1.4.5 you will be able to take some of that extra Gel and form it up into one of two new early game weapons: the Slime Spear and Slime Whip! These weapons will also inflict the Slime debuff on enemies. This will make them both easier to keep track of - and (also new to 1.4.5), more susceptible to fire! This makes for a nice one-two punch alongside some fire arrows, Wand of Sparking, or anything else that can inflict On Fire! This will also make these Slimy weapons a bit more "interesting" in multiplayer situations...

Let's just hope Baby Slime doesn't ask what that whip is made of...

Hey there, Terrarians!

As you may have seen over the past few months, we’ve been looking to simplify mobile’s control scheme through the addition of various new Quality of Life features. We have another one of these to share with you today: a feature called “multi-touch”!



In short, multi-touch is a new feature that can be toggled for each button in your control scheme. By enabling it for a button, the following changes occur:

• You can now drag your finger off the button and have it remain held.
  
• The button is now only released when your finger leaves the screen itself.
  
• With your finger still pressed to the screen, dragging it to another multi-touch button will press that button too.
  
• However, dragging your finger away from this new button will stop pressing it.

Through this change, it is now much easier to perform actions simultaneously. Were you wanting to continuously fire in a direction and periodically jump, you can now do so by pressing the fire button and dragging on / off of jump.Taking advantage of this feature, we have also added a new optional control scheme - single stick! This removes the right stick in favor of target locking, alongside a few other changes. In tandem with multi-touch, it now serves as a competent yet approachable way of playing.


To that end, here’s some footage of us putting it through its paces in a Pre-Mech Duke Fishron fight!

From Friday 30th May to Sunday 1st June, the Paper Fort Games team will be at the UK Games Expo in Birmingham, UK. Last year, we met loads of you at the show, and we’d really love to see you again; if you’re attending the convention, please swing by stand 2-714 to say hello and check out how the game has developed since UKGE 2024.



We’ll be running multiple demos of the game every day of the convention, as well as bringing our daily giveaways, beanbag toss, slime balloons and King Slime photo cutout; we can’t wait to see you there! Below are some photos from our stand in 2024:

LATEST PRE-PRODUCTION COMPONENTS
In anticipation of UKGE, we’ve been working with the Gameland manufacturing team to produce as many close-to-final components as we can for demos at the convention. This has involved lots of preparation of print files, reviewing of proofs and discussions with the factory, but we were very keen to have up-to-date copies to show at the event.

Last year (and until very recently), we were using a handmade version of the game for demos and development, featuring laser-cut tokens, generic dice and 3D-printed miniatures; this year we’re delighted to be showing off the game’s production-quality components (though Chris is a little sad at not being let loose on the laser as much this year…)

You’ll be able to see the game’s organiser trays, die-cut punchboard pieces, moulded plastic miniatures, printed transparent cards, wooden character pack, spiralbound Bestiary/ Crafting Menu, full-art card sleeves and much more.

We received many of these components in advance - Gameland are going to be bringing a few of the remaining components to the show. Below is a selection of the new components; it’s wonderful to finally see the tokens and tiles as punchboards!

GAMEPLAY VIDEOS
Getting our hands on these latest production-quality components will also give us the chance to do something we’ve be wanting to do for a long while - make new gameplay videos! With the game’s rules in flux due to playtesting and our development copy of the game get a bit ropey from all the handling/ stickering/ scribbling we’ve subjected it to, we haven’t been in a position to make a video that shows off the game in the way it deserves – until now! Once we’ve recovered from UK Games Expo, we’ll be organising a filming session; let us know in the comments if you’d prefer a full playthrough, bitesize overviews of different aspects of the game, or something else!

GAME DEVELOPMENT NEWS
Here’s what we’ve been focusing on this month:

• Rulebook: The rulebook rewrite is ongoing – it’s taking a little longer than anticipated but it’s worth spending time on. The good news is that it’s simpler, and shorter!
  
• Card wording changes: We’ve been going through the wording on every card with a fine-toothed comb to ensure consistency, simplify concepts and shorten text where possible. We’re currently replacing commonly used terms (such as draw, discard and scrap) with icons so it’s easier to parse a card’s effect at a glance.
  
• Bosses: As well as streamlining Boss behaviours and mechanics, we’ve been trying out a new idea that make a boss’s spawned ally more than just another enemy token in the world. We’re testing a new idea whereby Allies powerup their Boss via a ‘buff’ track – players will have to decide how to move Allies on this track to balance rewards and boss buffs. The wrinkle is that an Ally gets added each turn, forcing Allies already on the track into new spaces. We’ll have more about this next month, but here’s a sneak peek of the prototype cards:

Fourteen years ago today, a little game called Terraria launched on Steam and the rest is history. Since that time, over 64 million Terrarians across the globe have accepted the challenge - to traverse the dangerous biomes of Terraria in search of fortune, glory, and the defeat of the nefarious Moon Lord.To say we appreciate each and every one of you would be the understatement of all time. Quite simply, your support is what keeps Terraria alive, vibrant, and growing. Here’s to many more years of Terraria!

Spring has certainly sprung in our neck of the woods. Everything is greening up, flowers are in bloom, and the allergies are off the charts! Lots of interesting things going on behind the scenes as of late - hopefully some of that comes to fruition and we can share the details in later months. We know things are a bit chaotic in the world right now as well, so we do hope that Terraria can at least provide an area of respite for everyone. We also know that releasing the update would certainly help in that regard. We are doing all that we can to not only get this one done, but also plan a bit ahead to streamline things for down the road - but that's a story for another time. We know that many Terrarians greatly enjoy playing the Summoner class, but we also know that many players have felt that Summoner lags behind the other classes in regards to equipment and other aspects. One key missing piece has been the lack of weapon prefixes for Summoner weapons. In Terraria 1.4.5, we are finally addressing this with the addition of a suite of brand new Summoner weapon prefixes!

Another month of steady progress towards the release of Terraria 1.4.5 is in the books! In addition, we have been able to conduct a lot of planning for what comes next after 1.4.5, and we feel like that will pay dividends moving forward for sure. PLAYMAT CARRY BAG
During the campaign, we said that the world playmat would ship in a cardboard tube which could also be used to store it. This was true at the time, but over the past couple of months we’ve been working on something a little snazzier; a custom Terraria carry bag that will be included with every world playmat!



The bag features the Terraria logo embroidered in gold thread, an adjustable carry handle and a drawstring closure - it's perfect for slinging over your shoulder and heading to game night (or as a quiver for your Jester’s Arrows!).

COLOURED PLASTIC ORGANIZER TRAYS
Last month, we shared a render of the game’s coloured trays; the physical samples arrived in the office this week and we’re really happy with them. Not only do they add an exciting pop of colour to the box, they aid organisation by making each tray more easily identifiable.

CARD + BIOME TILE TRAY WHITE SAMPLES
In previous updates, you’ve seen the game's card and biome tile trays as grey plastic 3D prints. We recently received the cardboard versions which are sturdy and work really nicely. These will be fully printed; in the image below you’ll see a small hand-made mockup of the crate art that will cover the boxes. Not only with these have the Terraria crate vibe - the labels will help us to simplify organisation by reminding players of which cards are stored in which location.

BOSS AND ALLY ART
George is in the process of wrapping up paint-overs of the game’s Boss miniatures and ally tokens. These pieces of art will appear on the game’s Boss cards, and they also serve as a great colour reference if you’re thinking about painting your miniatures!

DICE TRAY SAMPLE
The dice tray sample arrived this week; it’s easy to store and assemble, and the artwork really pops! We’re discussing with the manufacturer about the viability of using invisible stitching in place of the black stitching shown on the sample.

GAME DEVELOPMENT NEWS
Here’s what we’ve been focusing on this month:

• The major rulebook overhaul continues; we've received initial comments from playtesters and are making improvements and clarifications based on this feedback. We’ll publish it for backers to read as soon as it’s ready (and less ugly!).
  
• ‘Blind’ playtesting is ongoing; the game is being playtested by groups playing the game based solely on the updated rulebook.
  
• Removal of half-blocks from the game has been well received by playtesters; George has just finished re-working the biome tile art to account for this.
  
• The ‘objective focus’ token (added to increase interactivity and planning between players) is serving its proposed function, but needs a couple of small changes to really shine.
  
• Alternate objectives have been tested and enjoyed; we're adjusting some but overall they are adding the desired variability game-to-game.
  
• Simplification of enemy retaliation rules has been successful; less dice rolling is saving time!
  
• Further updates to boss rules, spawn criteria and behaviours to streamline boss battles.

On April 1st, the Terraria community on Discord erupted into organized chaos as all members were suddenly drafted into a surprise server-wide showdown: the Celestial Clash. Players were assigned one of four celestial pillar roles, Solar, Vortex, Nebula, or Stardust, and sent into themed channels to represent their faction in a battle of pure messaging might. As the Moon Lord invaded the general chat, the only way to fight back was through conversation, creativity, and channel domination. Over the course of just 24 hours, Terrarians rallied to send over 132,000 messages, showcasing not just their competitive spirit, but their boundless energy and love for the game.

When the dust settled, it was the Vortex Pillar that claimed the title of champion, contributing a staggering 47,000+ messages alone. All participants in the Vortex Clash were awarded a limited-time role flair to commemorate their victory, and top contributors from all factions received additional recognition for their valiant efforts. Whether you were defending the Nebula realm or leading the Solar frontlines, this event proved just how electric the Terraria community can be when united under one banner (or four).



Earlier this month, our Discord server kicked off a no-theme Vanity Contest where players submitted their most creative character looks. Submissions closed April 16 and voting has officially ended! Thank you to everyone who participated and cast their vote. We’ll be sharing the winners in the next State of the Game!



On April 19, the Terraria Discord community gathered for a laid-back Stream Picnic event, where members took turns showcasing their favorite games live in voice chat. With 12-minute stream slots and open participation, it was a great way to share beloved titles, discover new ones, and connect over a shared love of gaming. Thanks to everyone who streamed, watched, and made it such a cozy success!



The Terraria Meme Contest is now underway, and we’re calling on all creative Terrarians to show us your best original memes! Whether it’s a hilarious in-game moment or a brilliant Terraria pun, we want to see it. Submissions must be related to Terraria and follow our server rules, any image or video format that embeds properly is welcome!

The top three memes will win big, with the first-place prize earning 25,000 Prize Points and the Event Winner role. Everyone who participates gets 500 Prize Points just for entering, so there’s no reason not to join the fun!

Anybody feeling especially lucky this month? We sure hope so, because we have some fun stuff to share this month - and we are one month closer to getting this update into your hands. It is crazy to see that the first three months of 2025 have already flown by. We promise that there is a pretty cool update sitting in the pot of gold at the end of this very long rainbow. One upside is that the extended update timeline has given DR Studios the chance to dive into even more polish and improvements on things specific to Console and Mobile. We hope that love and care will come through to everyone when the time comes.

With that said, let's see what is in store for this month's State of the Game!






In an earlier playthrough last year, renowned Terraria Enthusiast ChippyGaming and the creator of Terraria, Redigit, discussed having a special playthrough in 2025 where no secrets would be kept and any spoilers that showed up were fair game. The catch? They would be tethered together and playing on hardcore. Any death from either player would end the run. What new spoilers appeared? What development insights did Redigit reveal? What sorts of crazy shenanigans did they get up to? Most importantly - how did it end!?!

Terraria - still bringing players closer together than ever before after all of these years!

So, we hope that everyone enjoys that fun little journey into the world of Terraria 1.4.5 - we wish there could have been more, but sadly two seasoned Terraria pros got taken out by... a waterfall. That said, we thought we might share just a little bit more in the realm of spoilers this month:

Whittling the list, planning ahead...






Hello everyone!

This last month tModLoader hit an exciting new player count record. We had 56,000 players playing at the same time! We look forward to even more users enjoying playing tModLoader as new mods continue to come out and existing mods continue to update!

On April 1st the monthly update release of tModLoader will go live. One notable change for this month's release is the AddSpecialDraw changes for tile rendering, which can be used to address some animation frame rate and rendering issues. We hope mod makers read the pull request description and apply the fixes to their own tiles if relevant. We'd also encourage mod makers to check out the new features available in the preview release and provide feedback if anything is lacking. Some features in preview include biome conversion support and streamlined ModTileEntity examples and helper methods.

For mod makers, features of note currently in preview for next month include expanded tree shaking hooks and expanded shimmer recipe decrafting control.

Modders and users should also keep an eye out for our monthly Steam announcement on the 1st where a complete listing of bug fixes and API changes for this month's release will be listed. The in-game news button on the main menu will direct you directly to the announcement once it is live.

Hello Terrarians!

This month, we have once again been beavering away at Quality of Life changes. In particular, one spot we’ve been addressing is the use of primary vs. secondary item actions. Currently you perform “left click” actions with the Fire button, and “right click” actions with the Interact button. Since your Interact button is usually on the same side as your movement stick, however, this can get cumbersome when trying to attack with most weapons. This new (work in progress) feature should hopefully address that, and make these actions easier to use while moving!



To give a brief overview:

• We have added a toggle button between an item’s primary / secondary actions.
  
• This changes all buttons, as well as aim stick + screen tap, to perform the secondary action.
  
• Given these secondary actions could not previously be used on the aim stick, nor when tapping the screen, opening these up as options should make these actions much more comfortable than before.
  
• At the moment, this button can be unbound to revert to current 1.4.4.9 behaviour. We are iterating back and forth, however, so there might be changes on the horizon to how this is implemented.

UPDATED TIMELINE
TL;DR: We’re updating our estimated shipping date to August 2025.

At Paper Fort HQ, we’re regularly evaluating our internal deadlines and estimated timeline. Over the past month, we’ve made improvements to the game that require some extra testing time and that necessitate updates to the game’s print files. Finalizing the game’s tray design (a hugely important part of the game) and getting samples of some game components have also taken longer than we had hoped. These are critical milestones in the development process, and they directly impact the quality of the final game, so we need to give them the time they deserve. You can view the update timeline below:



This means that the game is going to take longer to get to backers than we had anticipated; we’re updating our estimated shipping date to August 2025. As backers of many projects ourselves, we understand that this can be frustrating, so we wanted to let everyone know sooner rather than later and reiterate our promise to keep you in the loop throughout the whole process.

This doesn’t mean anything has slowed down in our day-to-day work on the game; there are still lots of things happening in parallel, such as the finalizing of art assets, the rulebook overhaul and loads of playtesting. Our monthly updates will continue, with all the behind-the-curtain details of the game’s development and as many exciting pictures as we can fit in!

Speaking of exciting pictures, let’s take a look at what’s been happening this month…

WOODEN CHARACTER PACK
This week, we received a full sample of the game’s wooden character pieces. During the campaign, we planned to include 4 character pieces in the base game, but as mentioned previously we’ve decided to increase this to 8 as a thank you for your support. Therefore, the core game will come with 8 character pieces (2 in each player colour), and Hellstone backers will receive an additional 32 characters (8 in each player colour). As you might remember from previous updates, we’ve been testing lots of different printing methods and are very happy that we’ve found a technique that not only allows a wider range of colours but also permits more detailed artwork; quite a challenge on a wooden piece smaller than a penny!

Below is the full set; the 2 leftmost pieces in each colour are the base game pieces; the others are included in the Hellstone pack.

PLASTIC ORGANIZER SAMPLES
Until now, we’ve been testing 3D-printed version of the game’s organizer trays; this is a great initial check of dimensions and component fit, but this week we progressed to the next step - our plastic samples finally arrived!

The trays are vacuum formed. For those of you who are interested in how this process works, you can watch this short video (5 minutes). It’s not specific to board game inserts, but the process is very similar, and it shows the various stages involved in the process.


We’re happy to report that the plastic trays are sturdy, hold all of the components well, have secure snap-close lids and fit nicely in the box:



Eagle-eyed viewers may notice a few things in the GIF above:

• The plastic trays are all black: This is just for sampling purposes. The trays will be coloured, with the enemy tray purple to match the enemy dice, the boss trays colour-matched to the boss miniatures and the remaining trays Terraria green, colour-matched to the character dice. Their lids will all be transparent. Coloured trays are on their way to us; in the meantime here’s a digital mockup:

• There’s a mysterious white box at the top left: This area will contain a foam block in the core version of the game (so things don’t rattle around); Hellstone backers can replace this foam block with their box of extra wooden character pieces.
  
• The card and biome tile boxes are grey: These are still our 3D printed versions of these boxes. These will be made from full-art, double-walled cardboard in the final game; we are currently waiting on the cardboard samples.
  
• The card box is full of sleeved cards! That’s right; read on for a sleeve-related update…

CARD SLEEVES & SLEEVED CARD CAPACITY
Hot of the press, we have the physical samples of the full-art action card sleeves included with the Hellstone pledge! They look *amazing*, are fantastic quality (100-micron thickness) and fit the cards beautifully. We have subjected them to 30 solid minutes of the most brutal smash-shuffling that we could muster, and we’re happy to report they aren’t showing any signs of wear, splitting or peeling.

CHARACTER ART & UPDATED PLAYER BOARDS
George has just finished up a complete overhaul of our 8 character cards; we’ve worked closely with the Re-Logic team to create an interesting and diverse cast of characters to choose from.



Of course, as you progress through the game, you’ll be overlaying your character with various armor and vanity sets!



It has been a very fun technical challenge to make characters, armor and vanities that are completely interchangeable; we’re excited to see them in action!

Updated Player Boards
In our last update, we mentioned that we’ve updated the player boards to include designated consumable and discard pile areas; we just received the samples and it’s looking great! It definitely helps to have these extra reminders!

TERRARIAN & ENEMY DICE
And finally; some dice! We have just approved the samples for the Terrarian and enemy dice, with their new, easier to read inlay colours. The marbling looks great, and it’s very satisfying to roll a handful of them in combat!

Ah February, the month of love, or something like that? Well, we certainly love and appreciate each and every Terrarian out there, so let's go with it! Anyway, the team is whittling away at the remaining tickets in the system and making great headway down that road. We also have some fun new spoilers to showcase this month that we hope everyone will enjoy. Beyond that, we are really just hoping to be able to finally give a release window with some certainty sometime soon. We know that this update has taken a very long time and we appreciate your patience more than we can say. Please just hang in there with us a bit longer.

With that said, let's get right to it!






One of the long-running aspects of the upcoming Terraria update has been the development of a whole new suite of biome backgrounds. Hand-crafted by Luna (also known as RunicPixels), these deceptively detailed works of art really set the mood and keep things fresh as you explore each Terraria world. We are showing just a few examples below, but we have several others already completed and ready for prime time. Make sure that you take the time to look closely and take each of these all in....

Fairy Circles, Ancient Bones, Frozen Rivers, and Gnarled Corrupt Trees, oh my!

Again, there are several more where these come from (more than 10 as of today!) - and we cannot wait to see what you think of them all when 1.4.5 releases!

Happy February, Terrarians!

We hope the first few months of 2025 have been enjoyable ones. Alongside bringing 1.4.5’s content over to the mobile / console versions, one overarching task we’ve focused on this past year is Quality of Life - in other words, polishing certain actions / menus to make them easier to use.We wanted to take the time this month to showcase some changes to our virtual controls editor. We’ve drastically overhauled the way it’s used, as well as given it some new features, in an effort to make it more accessible to beginners and experts alike. Without further ado, here’s some footage!



To list a few of these changes:

• Placing a button down in a scheme has been dramatically altered. Rather than choosing from a giant list of actions and modifying their size, you now choose a control type and determine its action / size from a dedicated popup. You can also delete controls with it!
  
• You can now copy / paste configurations across loadouts. Great for people who like using multiple schemes with all the same button placements!
  
• Since the ways people play can vary quite drastically, we’ve added in some new default presets that you can choose from! Previously, there was only one default option for your controls.

Chris here, lead developer at Paper Fort Games. In this month’s Terraria: The Board Game designer diary, we’ve got a card sleeve art reveal, an update on the game’s organiser, lots of samples from the manufacturer and the latest development news from Paper Fort HQ.

Let’s jump in!

CARD SLEEVE ART
The Terraria: The Board Game Hellstone pledge level includes full-art card sleeves for the game’s action cards. Our original plan for these was to use the pre-existing King Slime boss art, but after seeing the Terrarian vs. Boss playmat art that George created, we knew that instead, we had to have another bespoke battle scene on the sleeves!

With Re-Logic, we decided to feature Eye of Cthulhu on the card sleeve; another iconic Terraria Boss. To contrast with the playmat art’s Underworld setting, we chose the Snow biome as the location, with a moonlit palette adding to the eerie atmosphere. As you can see from the sketch below, the Terrarian was originally going to be decked out in iron armor, instead they were upgraded to sturdier silver armor and armed with the Ice Blade, as well as a silver bow slung across their back. We are so thrilled with how the piece came out; it’s currently with the manufacturer being used to make sample card sleeves.

GAMETRAYZ ORGANIZER
After lots of back and forth we are now happy with the game’s organiser; you can see a basic schematic of how the storage will fit together below.



The Card and Biome Tile boxes will be double-walled, full-art cardstock boxes with lids and all of the trays will be plastic with transparent lids.

It takes quite a while for the manufacturer to create the tools for making these inserts, so while they get to grips with that we’ve ordered one final 3D printed version of everything. We want to be extra sure that everything fits the way it should, and there’s only so much you can check on a computer screen!

TRANSPARENT CARD SAMPLES
Last week, samples of the game’s transparent cards (used for armor, vanity and minions) arrived at the office. We are really happy with the print quality and the clarity of the cards when stacked. Here’s Chris testing a couple of the cards upon arrival; very satisfying!

LATEST BOSS MINIATURES
We received our latest batch of Boss miniature samples this week, and we’re happy to report that the keys are correct, the fit is good and the colours look great!



These are still 3D printed and airbrush painted samples (hence why the inside parts on some are white); we didn’t want to move on to creating molds for the plastic versions before we were 100% happy with them.

INVENTORY DICE SAMPLES
In our last update, we mentioned that the inventory dice samples were on their way. The marbled acrylic looks fantastic in blue, red, white and yellow, but the gold infill on the blue and red dice was very difficult to read. In light of this, we’ve switched over to a white infill on those dice instead and it is much clearer.

COIN DIAL MODIFICATIONS
The game’s coin dials have been altered slightly for useability; they are bigger, the numbers are clearer and we’ve added a little cutout to make turning the dial easier. These might all seem like small changes but they make a big difference overall.

HIGH-FRICTION BIOME TILES
Early on in the design of the game, we knew that tokens would need to be placed into the world; as enemies and to track various states. With this in mind, we’ve been working with the team at Gameland to find a coating for the biome tiles and tokens that decreases the chances of tokens moving easily if knocked. Of course, we can’t eliminate this completely, but we wanted to do something to help if we could.

We’ve tried a few different options, and have finally found a matte finish that increases friction between the biome tiles and tokens placed onto them, without adversely affecting the colours or sharpness of detail. Happily, it also has another bonus; significantly reducing glare and improving readability of the tiles, even with a bright light directly overhead.

GAME DEVELOPMENT
Here are some of the game’s features we’ve been focusing on this month:

• The major rulebook overhaul continues; we’ll publish it as soon as it’s ready.
  
• ‘Blind’ playtesting is ongoing; the game is currently with playtesting groups who will play the game based solely on the rulebook.
  
• Simplification of chopping and digging rules; now quicker, easier and less fiddly!
  
• Removal of time tokens from the game; passage of time is now baked into the threat tracker which means less things to check per turn.
  
• Significant upgrades across all cards; culling of ‘boring’ cards, introduction of more interesting and diverse cards to improve the overall deckbuilding aspect of the game experience.
  
• Objective chain updates, including testing of variable objectives allowing for more variety between games.
  
• Various graphic design improvements, including a player board upgrade to include designated consumable and discard pile area.
