As always, it’s been busy around here with tons of exciting updates from the dev team and the community. Let's jump straight in!




UPDATE v3.19 PREVIEW

Update v3.19 is on the way! With it comes some powerful new tools designed to make Risk fairer and more enjoyable for everyone. Here are some highlights:

  • Block Lists: Finally here! Block players who disrupt your games and prevent unwanted interactions.
  • Creating a safe space for the Community: Enhanced Streamer Mode, new report types for stream snipers, and players cannot re-enter pregame lobby when kicked out by Host
  • Postgame step for players who surrender: Even if you surrender early, you'll still get important post-match information and placement clarity.

UPDATE v3.18 HOTFIXES

Update v3.18 has well and truly landed after a huge content update as well as a bunch of hotfixes and minor updates to get it ticking over nicely. Our latest release 3.18.4 should have resolved any remaining issues players had with new visual glitches and disconnects, but if you believe you've found problems that are still present, as always, please reach out here.

We're excited to share the release of MapGenie, a community made project by Barry/CQG in the Risk Community Discord!

We’ve said this before, but it’s worth repeating; 2025 is a BIG year for Risk.

In Update 3.18, we released the Secret Assassin Beta game mode, balanced Secret Missions, and rolled out several quality-of-life improvements. (You can read the full breakdown of Update 3.18 here).

Update 3.19 builds on this, with a focus on improving the experience for both players and content creators. We’ve been listening closely to your feedback, and we’re introducing new tools to make games fairer and more enjoyable for everyone.

BOT-OUT TIMERS
Our first part of the update is actually live already. Prior to our recent release we received reports of players exploiting the botting out logic. Players had been found to enter a lobby and ready up before minimizing the app, letting an AI take over and the game play out, before resuming at a later time to determine if the game was worth continuing or not. This created a bad user experience for all other players involved. With the most recent release we have ensured that regardless of whether a player leaves the app foregrounded or backgrounded that they will be kicked from the game if they exceed the new time limit. The newly adjusted timings for the game are set up as such that after 50 seconds of inactivity on their turn a player will receive a pop down warning, after 60 seconds of inactivity on their turn an AI takeover will occur. If a player remains inactive and crosses the new threshold of three minutes they will be removed from the game permanently, the way this three minute timer is calculated varies depending on the bot out style.

If players bot out and keep the app foregrounded their inactive timer dictates their ability to re-join the game or not. A player's inactivity timer increments on their turn from the last moment of activity and continues to increment on their turn while their AI replacement plays. If the inactivity timer exceeds the time limit then they are automatically kicked out of the game and sent back to the home screen. If players minimize the app, sending it to the background, then a countdown timer is started on our servers. This timer is counted in real time and begins decrementing after the host has acknowledged the disconnected player and notified the server, in this instance there may be some leeway in the three minute deadline. If they exceed the time limit then they are unable to re-join the game when they re-focus the app, instead they are redirected back to the home screen.


BLOCK BUTTON
One of your most-requested features is finally coming: Block Lists. This new tool allows you to choose who you don’t want to play or interact with again.

1. Manage your Block List: Currently, players are using their friends list to act as a list of players to avoid. We’re making it so players can add and remove players from their block lists. A player can block from the pregame lobby up until the post game results screen. Now is the time to turn your ‘friends’ list into an actual friends list. 😂 True definition of keeping your friends close and enemies closer.



2. Prevent unwanted players joining your lobby: Once you have blocked a player, they will be unable to see or join any public or private lobbies you are hosting.


3. You’ll receive a message if a blocked player joins or is in your pregame lobby: If a blocked player joins a lobby you are in, you’ll receive a warning message. The blocked player will be marked with an icon.



While we know this isn't a complete solution to unfair play and cheating, we believe it’ll significantly improve your overall experience and make it easier to find players who are worth playing with.


A SAFER SPACE FOR THE COMMUNITY
We love our content creators and we've heard them loud and clear when they've told us the challenges they face streaming Risk live. It only takes one or two bad eggs to ruin the streaming experience - whether it's by using a stream to snipe a game they're playing with a creator, or just messing with a creator because you know people are watching.

The block lists above are a good start, but we're taking further steps to make it a safer, more enjoyable place for creators to share live gameplay.

We’re adding some robust enhancements to our Streamer Mode to help streamers avoid trolls and stream snipers, and make it easier to create Risk content.

1. Streamer Mode Improvements: Streamer Mode now provides stronger identity protection by generating randomized names, avatars, colors, and countries for all players in the pre-game lobby—including the streamer. Real identities are only revealed once the match officially begins, helping prevent targeted sniping. Additionally, map previews and game settings are hidden in the pre-game lobby for added privacy.

2. New Report Type: Stream Sniper: We’re giving everyone a way to officially report stream sniping behavior. This helps us build better tools to detect and take action against those trying to ruin a good game.

3. Players cannot re-enter pregame lobby when kicked out by Host: We understand how frustrating it can be when kicked players repeatedly rejoin your lobby. As of 3.19, kicked players will receive a message: “You cannot rejoin this game as you have been recently kicked by the host”. The game will also become hidden from their available lobbies, and has no timeout. This is a great global feature for all players.


POSTGAME STEP FOR PLAYERS WHO SURRENDER
We’re adding a new postgame step for players who surrender early. Previously, leaving a match meant missing clarity around your final placement. Now, surrendering players will clearly see their final position (3rd, 4th, 5th etc.), along with a message that Battle Points will be awarded once final results are determined.

Players who surrender are still allowed to block, add friend requests and like the map.




BUGFIXES
Our team has also tackled a large number of bugs such as:
  • Duplicate territory cards breaking card limits on maps.
  • The Gameplay settings, Colourblind Mode, Screen Res and Screen Type all display English.
  • Charleroi Farm Territory missing connection to Diary.
  • Disabling Streamer mode making lobby modifiers disappear.
  • Difficulty settings being overridden after a Secret Assassin game.
There will be a full list in the release notes once the update is out!

  • Progressive games will no longer allow illegal combinations of cards to be traded.
  • Capitals Mode will no longer allow players to place extra Capitals in certain conditions.
  • Matchmaker achievement should be awarded correctly now.
  • Fixed a bug where the wrong thumbnail occasionally showed up on some notification screens.
  • Fixed a bug in the shop where emotes could appear to be available for purchase after buying them.
  • Fixed a bug where some mobile users could get experience a lock when being asked to give feedback on a map.
  • Made a number of visual adjustments to the Napoleon maps which should help with compression and readability on smaller devices.
  • Territory cards on Asia 1800 display correctly now.
  • Dynamic turn timers should consistently only show up in Private (Friends) games only now. Our new shorter timers should continue to be available in Public (Casual) as well as Private (Friends).
Known Issues:
  • We're aware of a bug players may accessing their maps in offline mode. We're looking at a fix to roll out soon.

Last week saw the release of v3.18 and a new game mode: Secret Assassin. It’s a variant of Secret Missions mode released last year where there’s only one mission: find your target and take them out!

Secret Assassin is a fast, frantic game of double bluffing and deception where you can literally trust no one.

How to Play Secret Assassin


Nobody plays Secret Assassin to make friends

To play Secret Assassin look for it on the Modes and Modifier screen or when joining a lobby.

  1. At the start of each game, each player is assigned a secret target..
  2. Eliminate your target before any other player eliminates their target to win the game.
  3. If your target is eliminated by another player, the game doesn’t end, instead, they become your target! Revenge is so sweet. 😈

Secret Mission Changes:

Speaking of new ways to play, we released Secret Missions December last year based on the official 1993 Secret Mission ruleset.

Feedback has been positive but you’ve gotten back to us with suggestions on how to make it even better. Here’s the changes coming in 3.18:


Someone taking out your target is now just the beginning of a beautiful rivalry

1. Someone else achieving your objective doesn’t end the game: We’ve received fair criticism that someone else achieving your objective should NOT end the game. This was actually our biggest request since the release of the game mode. We’ve decided to change this rule so instead of the game ending, that player draws a fresh objective from the objective deck.

2. Balance changes for 1v1 games: Some of you pointed out Secret Missions needed better balance for 1v1 matchups and we agree. We’ve made tweaks to improve mission balance in 1v1 mode - no more turn one wins on a lucky draw!

3. New overlays help players see objectives: We’ve added clickable overlays to all Secret Missions so players can see all the possible objectives. Previously only Occupy type missions had clickable overlays. Now selecting any mission type will show you where to target.



Both Secret Missions and Secret Assassin are still in beta. Try them out, let us know what works (and what doesn’t), and help us fine-tune the game mode in 2025.

3.18 is a big release, and we had a couple of hiccups. Here’s what we’re tackling in hotfix 3.18.1:

BUGFIXES

1. Fixed an issue where phase animations could cascade if the app is backgrounded on android.
2. Fixed an issue where players could spawn too many capitals in capitals mode.
3. Fixed an issue where the draft troops animation wasn’t showing correctly.
4. The Syrian flag should now show the correct flag in user profiles

KNOWN ISSUES

These aren’t fixed yet but will be tackled next week in hotfix 3.18.2.

1. Matchmaker achievement still not triggering correctly.
2. Upon ending turn you may see a brief overlay popup. As a workaround for now, you can enable ‘Draft Troops Animations’ and ‘Phase Change Animations’ if its causing issues.

A new game mode, community requested features and quality of life updates and then we’re heading back to Risk’s roots with a Napoleon themed map and cosmetics pack.

FEATURES
  1. New Game Mode: Secret Assassin Secret Assassin mode has entered open beta! Hunt a random enemy player while you try to evade the player hunting you.
  2. New Content: Napoleon’s Battles Map Pack & Cosmetics Featuring 4 new maps and a cosmetic pack straight from the fields of France. More on this below.
MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS
  1. Turn Timers
    • Dynamic Turn Timers have come to risk! Dynamic Turn Timers add extra time whenever you perform an extra attack with a little more going to mobile users to help with those late game power plays. You can turn them on in the Game Modifiers screen. For now they’re optional and in private (friends) only but let us know what you think - love it, hate it, or have more suggestions. We’ll continue to visit this in 3.19.
    • For people wanting a faster game now these options are in, we’ve added a 30s and 45s option to the base timer - available in public (casual) and private (friends) games.
  2. Secret Missions We’ve made more changes to Secret Missions since launching the game mode last year:
    • Someone achieving your objective doesn’t end the game Players who have their mission fulfilled outside their turn will now draw a fresh objective. Keep shooting, soldier!
    • Better 1v1 Balance We’ve done a sweep and rebalance of mission objectives for 1v1 games. ‘Occupy X’ missions should be better balanced now compared to the others. No more turn one wins!
    • New overlays All Secret Mission mission types now have interactive overlays to help you visualise your goals.
  3. Map Screen Some more improvements to our new Map Screen, including:
    • Map Packs Tab shows all maps sorted into map packs.
    • Recently Purchased category has been added to the Categories screen.
    • Support for Mac Magic Mouse added.
    • Timers now display time remaining for free maps and sales.
    • Better filter handling on the All Maps screen.
MINOR IMPROVEMENTS
  1. Camera animations disabled for new players by default on their first MP game You can turn them back on in settings - but should result in faster games all round.
  2. Shorter bot-out timers for disconnecting players Players have 3m now to rejoin after losing their connection (was previously 10m and prone to abuse).
  3. Smarter automatic Territory Card trades The game will automatically offer smarter suggestions for card trades - no more suggesting to trade in an extra wild or +2 just cuz.
  4. Confirm Capital Placement in Capitals mode Misclicking your capital placement is now a thing of the past with a new confirmation step added to the flow.
BUGFIXES & MINOR IMPROVEMENTS
  1. Fixed three broken achievements: Better Luck Next Time, Matchmaker & Land Baron.
  2. Blizzard placements should no longer be able to make games unwinnable in some Secret Missions.
  3. Fixed some visual bugs relating to Among Us dice and Dune troops.
  4. The Viking Conquest map pack now has correct art.
  5. Improved optimization for the new map screen on android devices.
  6. Push notification reminders for new users should show up more reliably - existing users may get one more reminder to turn on notifications after this update.
  7. The shop and cosmetics screen have seem some small fixes: discount flags should show more reliably and shop content should be sorted in more meaningful orders.
  8. Fixed broken connections on Among Us Polus.
  9. The Syrian Flag profile badge has been updated.
