Yes, I know official spooks month is long past now. Yes, I am still playing Phasmophobia. The co-op ghost hunting simulation is just too much fun to mess around in with pals. The more familiar we’ve gotten with the game though, the clearer it is that there is one ghost hunting objective that is the absolute worst. It doesn’t sound like much, but snapping a photo of dirty water is an absolute pain in the rear and, glory to all that is good, Phasmophobia’s developer has decided to remove it.

The prison map that ghost hunting game Phasmophobia‘s been cooking up is out today in a new game update. That there’s a picture I personally took while exploring it for the first time, a commitment I hope you can appreciate as I do not hunt ghosts solo. Here’s a few other observations about the new prison map from yours truly before you go try it for yourself.

Early access ghost spotting sim Phasmophobia will be opening the doors of a prison map [distant creak]>… did you hear that? I thought… No, it must be a dire wolf or something. Anyway, as I was saying, the map will be [sound of creak, but closer]> — is that you, Graham? Haha. Very funny. I’m not scared, you know? I’m trying to do a news post. Graham? GRAHAM? Leaving the Mystery Machine in a Phasmophobia screenshot.

While the maker of Phasmophobia did once hint at plans to add a PvP mode to the smash-hit cooperative ghost-hunting game, they’ve now said naw that’s off. Didn’t fit what the game is. Makes sense. Phasmophobia’s a game of terse and unpredictable encounters with entities who behave in inhuman ways, and even the most murderous spirit is often inscrutable. A human opponent playing to win objectives sounds boring in comparison. And with only one person making the game, sure, it’s best to focus on the good stuff rather than get lost in modes people didn’t buy it for.

Hear ye hear ye, here’s the top releases on Steam from the month of September. As ever, some big names like Marvel and Mafia are on the list, and so are some long-awaited favorites like Spelunky 2 and Serious Sam 4. More interesting though are the weird indie breakout games. Yup, Phasmophobia‘s on there and you can’t stop me from talking about it.

Co-op ghost hunting game Phasmophobia has enthralled a lot of players and I am one of them. It’s a total riot to play with pals—which I’ve done almost every single night for a week and a half. In that time, I’ve already progressed from tiptoeing meekly through haunted houses to boldly taunting ghosts by name as soon as I cross the threshold. For those like me, good news then that Phasmophobia is planning some changes to make ghosts a bit scarier and trickier to pin down.

Ghost hunting simulation Phasmophobia has certainly scared up a rising player base. Despite the somewhat janky quality of its early access version, folks seem to be pretty possessed by the supernatural spooks. It’s been climbing in concurrent Steam players and Twitch viewers this month, leaving even known weenies like me curious enough to consider playing with friends.
