Death Stranding

, the walking simulator about the sad Deliveroo man, is finally out on PC, allowing thousands of keyboard clackers to decode the complex metaphors embedded within such characters as “Mama”, a woman with a baby, and “Heartman”, a man with a pacemaker, played here by an aging and tired Danny Wallace. Look beyond the sub-textual nuance of such masterful creations, however, and you will find a half-decent delivery ‘em up. But is reliable postboy Sam Porter Bridges (a transporter who builds bridges) one of the 7 best couriers in PC games? You can find out by reading closely between the lines of this list.

Look lively soldier, the country is at war. There are grey-uniformed murderer-men spilling over our barbed wire. Enemy motorcycles zooming around our roads, uncontested. They re killing your comrades soldier, are you just going to stand there and take it? Good! Glad to see that iron resolve flaring up, glad to see y JESUS CHRIST put that rifle down. No, no. That s not what I meant. No. We need truck drivers. You re a truck driver, Brian. That s how you help the war effort. What, you think these giant steel bars are going to deliver themselves?

Foxhole is a game about being a bullet delivery boy.

Strategic MMO shooter Foxhole is an interesting beast. Clapfoot’s isometric shooter MMO is equal parts Running With Rifles and World War 2 Online, with hundreds of players (over a thousand at peak) sharing a persistent battlefield over the course of weeks. It’s been in early access for a while, but today’s update – Foundation Of War – is the biggest change yet for it. On top of a visual overhaul making it far nicer to look at, the game now features building interiors, more complex urban combat, huge tanks that need up to five players to fully crew and a bunch more. The game is also 40% off – see the update trailer below.

For the third day in a row, our outpost was under attack. Some enterprising yanks had discovered they could take opportunistic raiding parties through an undefended snowy field and get within grenade-throwing distance of our forward operating base a walled-in barracks full of tiny toy soldiers all sitting around grunting that they didn t have enough rifles, ammo, or best friends to clutch to their breasts as they died in the snow. Someone lowered the iron gate for me and I drove the truck into the compound, during a mercifully quiet and shrapnel-free moment.

Who wants b-mats! I shouted, employing the shorthand for basic materials I d learned from wiser, fightier men. Get your b-mats here!

Everyone in the compound rushed to the truck.

Oh YES, said an engineer, as he unloaded the essentials he needed to build up defences and do his own job. Buddy, you are the real MVP. (more…)

What sound drips forth from the audio tubes? It’s just the latest RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show. Our topic this week is: “which TV show deserves a good videogame adaptation?” Maybe you feel Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Whatever could make a good survival game? Or perhaps The Handmaid’s Tale could be a great FPS? Probably not. Graham is convinced that road trip anime Kino’s Journey is a contender, while I’m yearning for a good The Wire or Wolf Hall game full of intrigue and politicking.

Meanwhile, Graham caught up with the sad boy brigade and played Limbo follow-up Inside, while I’ve been hunkering down in the top-down persistent multiplayer war of Foxhole. It’s just us two this week because Adam is gone and Pip has been possessed by a flu demon that makes her voice sound like it’s trapped in hell. (more…)

Foxhole [official site], a massively multiplayer sandbox war where players act like units in an RTS, has invaded Steam Early Access. A war has raged for yonks, see, and now hundreds of players play every part from building bases and running supplies to, you know, fighting. After a stretch in open pre-alpha (which I downloaded but didn’t play because Plunkbat happened), Foxhole has now officially launched into paid early access. A bit like PlanetSide 2, World War 2 Online, and other persistent wars, it’s all one big throwdown across many fronts with grand schemes and grander failures. I hear good things from chums who are more resistant to Plunkbat’s siren call. (more…)
