Dead by Daylight

Epic has announced the next batch of free games coming to its store, with next week's offerings looking an awful lot like Dead by Daylight and While True: learn().

Dead by Daylight, should you be unfamiliar, is developer Behaviour Interactive's extremely popular 4v1 asymmetrical horror game, which pits a team of four survivors against one bloodthirsty killer as they attempt to evade and escape.

In the five years since Dead by Daylight's release, it's received a mountain of DLC, including a whole bunch of iconic killers from some of the most beloved horror franchises in cinema and gaming, including A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger, Halloween's Michael Myers, Hellraiser's Pinhead, Scream's Ghost Face, Silent Hill's Pyramid Head, and more.

Dead by Daylight goes back to its roots for its newly announced original chapter Portrait of a Murder.

The chapter is "an artistic ode to fear and darkness set in a surreal interpretation of an abandoned graveyard in the Chilean desert" and features a new killer and survivor.

The announcement trailer gives a sense of the ink blotted artistic vibe, as well as a look at the new characters.

A quick check on Twitch is enough to see how popular Dead by Daylight has become online. The asymmetrical horror game first released back in 2016; now it's a horror sensation.

Its success isn't necessarily a surprise: it has gradually incorporated iconic franchises from cinema and gaming to become a hub of all things horror. "A fan told us, you know, you're like the Smash Bros. of horror," says creative director Dave Richard.

But the Smash Bros. of horror has also found surprising success with the LGBT+ community - drag queen Twitch streamers in particular. In turn, developer Behaviour Interactive has sought to support the community, ensuring a diverse and inclusive suite of characters that reflects the player base. They're even working with US non-profit organisation GaymerX to soon bring the first openly queer character to the game.

Dead by Daylight is receiving criticism online following the news its Pinhead character model, introduced in its latest Hellraiser content, has been made available for NFTs.

The multiplayer title's developer Behaviour Interactive shared on Twitter that it worked with a company called Boss Protocol "over several months to adapt in-game models for use as NFTs".

According to an Behaviour's FAQ page, Boss Protocol worked with Boss Team Games "who controls certain interactive rights to Hellraiser from Park Avenue Entertainment".

Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive is revising changes it recently made to the asymmetrical survival horror's HUD in response to critical player feedback.

"Here's a preview of the changes we'll be making to the HUD following your feedback," tweeted Behaviour, including an image of the proposed new design. "Please note that this is a work in progress. We are still actively working on making changes, which will appear with the *second* bugfix patch."

The most "notable changes" include lowered Survivor statuses, lowered hook counter, moved objectives from top to bottom left, removed text from objectives, and skill checks now have their own UI scaling option, too.

Developer Behaviour Interactive has given a good old yank on its update deployment lever for asynchronous multiplayer horror hit Dead by Daylight, unleashing its previously promised cross-play support for PC and consoles.

Cross-play is available now on Steam, the Microsoft Store, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch (but not mobile devices), meaning players across all supported versions can leap into the same matchmaking pool. As Behaviour's FAQ explains, though, those who'd rather opt of cross-play can do so - although this may increase the length of time it takes to find a game.

Dead by Daylight's latest update also introduces a unified friends list for consoles and PC (Behaviour's calling this its "Cross-Friends" feature), meaning it's possible to team up with pals regardless of their preferred platform. It's worth noting, however, that there's no in-game chat support on consoles, so you'll need to do your communicating the old-fashioned way.

Konami might not be in any particular hurry to give the world a proper new Silent Hill (damn you Konami!), but it's now teamed up with Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive to bring Silent Hill 2's iconic unearthly butcher Pyramid Head to the asymmetrical horror game.

Pyramid Head arrives as part of Dead by Daylight's upcoming Silent-Hill-themed DLC - which also includes a suitably sinister new map and familiar survivor - and marks the game's seventh licensed addition, following on from the likes of Halloween's Michael Myers, Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger, Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Leatherface, Saw's Amanda Young, Scream's Ghost Face, and Stranger Things' Demogorgon.

Behaviour Interactive calls Pyramid Head (who'll be known as The Executioner in-game) a "sadistic and merciless killer fixated on dispensing punishment through pain", and the pointy-headed one will be fulfilling their tour of torment within the shadowy halls of a new map inspired by Silent Hill's Midwich Elementary School.

Netflix has set up yet another collaboration for its hit show Stranger Things, with an update inspired by the show coming to Dead by Daylight next month.

Last month, we saw Stranger Things themed portals crop up in Fortnite in time for the release of the third season of the show. Now, in perhaps a more appropriately-themed game, we'll get to play as a much scarier version of the Demogorgon.

The update will feature the Demogorgon as a new killer, Nancy and Steve as new survivors, and even adds the Hawkins National Laboratory: The Underground Complex as a new map.

Following an unintentionally revealing update mishap, fans have discovered that the next killer to join asymmetrical multiplayer slasher horror Dead by Daylight will be the iconic masked maniac Ghostface from Scream.

Developer Behaviour Interactive ordinarily likes to reveal its newest additions with a bit of fanfare, but its next big surprise was somewhat ruined when it accidentally pushed its own developer build to Xbox One players instead of its intended Mid-Chapter Update.

Although Behaviour Interactive was quick to rectify the mistake, there was no stopping dataminers from picking through the mistakenly deployed update. There they found, among other things, models, textures, and animations for a new killer based on the antagonist of seminal 90s slasher movie series Scream - better known as Ghostface - and it didn't take long for those files to find their way to the self-explanatory Leaks by Daylight subreddit.

We're a fair distance from Halloween, but Dead by Daylight is determined to let you get your spook on all year round - and now you can survive the night as Ash from Evil Dead.

Ash will be voiced by original actor Bruce Campbell, who also appeared in a short video to promote the new game character. Campbell announced his retirement from the role when Starz cancelled the Ash vs Evil Dead series last year, so his decision to resurrect the character comes as something as a surprise.

The appearance of Ash in the game itself, however, comes as less of a shock to fans, given that perks relating to the character were spotted in the recent Demise of the Faithful update.
