We - the DoubleTap team, in collaboration with publisher Valkyrie Initiative - are pleased to announce that our strategy game Blades For Hire is taking part in the Ancient Costume Game Festival on Steam.

In this game, you will take command of a guild of mercenaries in a world where honor has long lost its value, and survival depends on tough decisions - your decisions.

WHAT AWAITS PLAYTEST PARTICIPANTS:
- An improved version of the game, based on feedback collected from the currently available demo version.
- Bonus content.
- Two available Steam achievements, one of which will unlock unique equipment.

🏆EXCLUSIVE REWARD:
For participating in the playtest and fulfilling certain conditions, each participant will have the opportunity to receive unique body armor and a two-handed sword when the game is released.




Conditions to receive the reward:
- Add the game to your wishlist.
- Follow the publisher page on Steam.
- During the playtest, earn the Steam achievement "Old Guard".

To earn the "Old Guard" achievement, you must complete the playtest without hiring new recruits.
This means you can only use the mercenaries available from the start. Since they can die, flee, or quit if not paid on time, this can be quite a challenge.

The playtest is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2026.
When the playtest begins, you will receive a notification.
For now, you can already complete the first requirement by adding the game to your wishlist so you don’t miss the start of the playtest.

New Stuff:

A large port of a lot of the experimental content over to the main demo.

- Massive UI overhaul

- Knight overhaul

- Rogue overhaul

- fixed a lot of major and minor bugs, some of them causing crashes
- added option to hide capital cities and settlement
- improved AI - since now it should manage finances way better
- fixed balance issues - since now playing as minor nations should be easier, and playing as major nations should be a bit harder. Also some law modifiers were changed
- added two new administrative unit types: colonies and governorates. They may be useful in some conditions
- difficulty modifiers were changed - since now they should impact the game much more
- a foundations for the next update were made

I am sorry for such a long period without updates, I hope the next update will be way faster. It is going to be focused on adding rivers and some basic decisions to the game. I hope you enjoy.

Hi all! Based on some more helpful demo feedback, I've released a new demo version. This version should drastically improve the initial load time when first starting the game, and have a nice new boot splash animation, so that you're not staring at the static logo for upwards of 10 seconds before starting the game.

Also, I realized that the in-game version was actually 0.21.x, not 0.20.x, so sorry for any confusion about that! This update isn't a huge minor version, haha.

Changelog (0.21.6):

  • Performance: Improved initial load times for the game by switching to VRAM-compressed textures for most textures, instead of lossless PNGs. (This has the tradeoff of making the install size on your disk a bit larger, but the improvement in load times and vram usage is pretty worth it!)
