sonic the hedgehog running through Chemical Plant Zone

The first time my friend showed me a blue hedgehog whizzing across the screen from left-to-right, I knew I had to get a Mega Drive. It didn’t stop there, though: I had to read the comics, watch the cartoon, get the toys. Sonic The Hedgehog became a pivotal figure in my life as soon as I laid eyes on him.

And then he let me down.

Well, that didn’t stick. Earlier today, Valorant began rolling out version 1.11, adding animal-yeeting Aussie hero Skye and a frosty new Icebox map. But following a host of bizarre hiccups, it now looks like Riot have decided to slam the pause button, calling the update a “technical nightmare” and delaying the update’s proper arrival ’til later this week.

Grounded - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Natalie Clayton)

Honey I Shrunk The Kids ’em up Grounded has taken a step into the deep end. The next update for Obsidian’s teeny tiny survival sandbox opens up the Koi Pond, letting you dive into murky puddles while evading dangerous goldfish and submerged spiders. The pool will open for everyone next month – but if you’re feeling antsy, you can dive in right now via the public test server.

Destiny 2 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

A Destiny 2 cinematic still showing Crow, the Guardian raised from Uldren Sov, and his Ghost.

The man who killed our pal Cayde-6 will return to Destiny 2 with Season Of The Hunt, Bungie revealed today. Well, the Guardian reanimated from the corpse of the man who killed Cayde will. It’s complicated. Spacemagic. With the Beyond Light expansion now two weeks away, Bungie today released a new video documentary gabbing about its development and laying out more of their plans for MMOFPS’s next year of content. Look, I’m setting myself up for ridicule after years of Destiny casually setting plot big threads aside to chase distractions but: it sounds like it’s all leading somewhere.

Ah, the hum of your hover-engine beneath your feet. The pitter-patter of rain on the windshield. The light glow of the GPS as your dispatch screen lights up. Until now, I could only imagine the interior of one of Cloudpunk‘s blocky hover-cabs. That’s all changed with today’s Cockpit Update, which puts you right in the drivers seat for a night’s shift – briefly cutting fares by a third for passengers who’re hopping on for the first time.

Carto - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Natalie Clayton)

Gosh, what I’d give to have the cartographic powers of Carto‘s leading lass. It’d make the commute a hell of a lot quicker if I could just pick up a square kilometre of Leith and plop it down next to my flat. Sunhead Games’ adorable, map-shifting puzzler sets off today, letting you step in and solve some lovely geographical jigsaw puzzles.

Today, Riot’s tactical FPS Valorant says hello to a new agent. Australian healer Skye will not just treat your wounds, but she’ll throw various animals at your enemies to blind and stall them while she’s at it. She’s also very cute, and looks a bit like Artemis from Hades.

This patch, version 1.11, comes with a bunch of changes to some of the other characters, too, and even plonks the new map Icebox into competitive rotation.

ScourgeBringer - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Brendan Caldwell)

A screenshot of a dungeon room in ScourgeBringer, where a boss enemy resembling a cross between a jellyfish and an angry piece of popcorn is floating near the ceiling and spitting out waves of fireballs.

Comparisons to Dead Cells might come easily, but platforming slash ‘n’ dash ScourgeBringer feels less like a modernised Castlevania and more like an answer to the question: “What if Samurai Gunn had a single player story mode?” This is a question that nobody, save the developers of this gun-toting room clearer, seems to have asked. We should be ashamed of ourselves.
