As we continue to work on the game, we continue to want to share the process with you! There are all kinds of ins and outs that happen under the hood and behind the curtains to make the game look pretty, so we decided to share the more interesting aspects here once in a while. Today let's dive into the secret of how 2D becomes 3D!
In this game we paint backgrounds in 2D 🎨, but use 3D characters, which gives us the ability to have more camera angles and use character animations in more varying scenarios. So this time we'll tell you about how we turn Bill's beautiful paintings into actual 3D environments, and what perks we get out of that.
So, where do we start? Right! First and foremost, Bill paints a pretty scene with all the important objects in separate layers. Then we take the image and try to figure out where a camera would be if it were a real world environment. 🤔 That includes the camera's position, direction and view angle (or field of view). This is slightly challenging, because the world is painted with all kinds of twisty shapes, which makes it so unique, but also hard to align with the real world rules. When that is done, we go over each object in the scene and recreate their shapes in 3D and project their pictures on them. In the end, the scene looks identical to the initial picture from the camera's perspective, BUT that's where the magic happens ✨. This is what we have in the game engine:
When we have a 3D scene like that, we can actually move the camera when the characters move around or when the players moves the cursor, concentrating their attention on different parts of the screen. This creates a nice parallax effect and makes the world much livelier 🚶♀️:
In addition to that, the 3D characters can actually walk around in that newly constructed 3D world. That gives us the ability to have real-time lights and shadows between characters and 2D backgrounds, which really blends them together. All kinds of extra effects become possible and more convincing too – lightrays ☀️, dust, falling snow, smoke and so on. See how she receives light from the surroundings and casts dynamic shadows on the environment:

Added some more neat features to the Spireworm update! Happy Valentine’s Day to all the couples out there! Us single people will continue not having a Player 2. :,( Anyway, let's get to these new changes!
Patch Changes
- Added a weak point to the Spireworm! Hate his spike explosions? So do we! We've given him a red segment weak point. If you can turn that segment green before destroying it, you'll completely disable his spike explosion and spike shotgun attacks! But if you destroy it without turning it green... well... good luck.
- The Spireworm can now heal! If his health drops below 10 or his weak point is destroyed, he can turn his head blue! Shooting his segments while his head is this color will heal him and restore segments—so try not to do that!
- Added the Spireship! A new unlockable ship you can get by defeating the Spireworm on Nightmare mode! That weak point is sounding pretty useful now, isn’t it?
- Added the Valentine Ship! A new heart-shaped ship that unlocks when you pass wave 20 in Endless mode! Be sure to grab that one for your special someone! This ship can only be unlocked from February 14th to the 20th, so don’t miss out!
- Added a new red shader! This shader flashes when you're landing bad hits—like shooting the Dashark while his mouth is closed or attacking the Spireworm when he has a healing head!
More features are on the way soon—the Spireworm still has a few tricks up his... sleeves? Uh, segments!

We have been working hard at creating the best game possible for everyone. We're not great at posting and apologise for taking so long, but are glad to finally have a rhythm that'll let us share game progress with you more consistently.
Art Direction
These past few months, we've done a complete overhaul of our game's graphics. With many new models and textures, as well as experimenting with different post-processes. The goal is to get a more distinct and coherent art direction for the game. There's still some dressing up to do, but we're also trying to give a bit more personality to our level's environment and make each one memorable for the player.
Tower defence & FPS
The biggest challenge for the game is to find the proper balance between the tower defence experience and fast action base FPS. We've really been working hard on adjusting our weapon and construction design to give them all a sense of existence in the game.
Elements and reactions
For a bit of spice we've introduced an element system with four different elements your constructions can apply: Electric, Fire, Ice and Corrosion. Certain enemies are weaker or resistant to these elements and hitting them with multiple elements that create various reaction beneficial to you.
Your character also can choose a skill in battle that can transform your weapon's elemental damaging (usually hitting regular physical damage)
I won't go into too many details, as I plan on detailing our design process on this system in a future dev log, but we've been having a lot of fun with this idea and feel it'll bring an extra layer of dynamism and strategy to the experience.
Enemies
Our enemies also got a bit of a glow up. Our base trooper got himself 3 variations now, each stronger than the last. We're to add a good more enemy types as development comes so look forward to seeing of the P.A.S.C.A.L's minions in you feed.
