This update is for the Public Test branch of Valheim, and may therefore be unstable. Before we launch this update to the Default version of the game, we want to make sure to have a chance to discover bugs and adjust the balancing, to give you the best game experience possible.
Access the Public Test branch by right clicking Valheim in your Steam library, and then select ‘Properties’. In the new window, select ‘Betas’ and type in the code “yesimadebackups”. The Public Test branch should now be available for you to choose from.
Please leave any feedback you may have in the appropriate channel in our Discord, or in the appropriate forum on our website.
As always, remember to be considerate towards players not partaking in the Public Test, in case they want to avoid spoilers.
As the password indicates, please make sure to make backups of your save files before playing.

Some minor fixes to the PTB! If all is well, it should soon be moved over to the default branch.

Visitor

  • The additional damage from Berserker, the skill of Ong, has been increased from 10 to 15.
  • The additional durability of the Holy Rattan held by Don has been increased from 1 to 2.
Warden
  • Adjusted Scream, the skill of Heartrocker, the amount of decreased movement speed is adjusted from 50/40/30/20/10/0 units to 80/60/40/20/10/0 units.
  • Adjusted Echo Noise, the skill of Heartrocker, has had the amount of decreased movement speed adjusted from 40/32/24/16/8/0 units to 50/40/30/20/10/0 units.
  • The additional movement speed while Nylcan is using Hunt Mode has been increased from 80 units to 120 units.
  • The duration of Hunt Mode, the skill of Nylcan, has been increased from 15 to 20 seconds.
  • The decreased movement speed of the target affected by Perfume, the skill of the Rigger, has been adjusted from 60 units to 80 units.
  • The strength of The Rigger has been increased from 1 to 2.
Battle Mode
  • Adjusted the maximum cap for the combined experience points obtained from both roles in the Battle Royale mode to not exceed 400 points.

Bug
  • Fixed: The Visitor is being strangled by Ratri could falling off the map.
  • Fixed: Effect of displaying an abnormally high number of bat for the Bat Wings Headband, Head Accessory of Visitor.
  • Fixed: If you exit the game before it finishes, the player's account data, such as their level and progress, will be update delayingly.
  • Fixed: The number of players in the Practice Room (BETA) could be incorrect.

The cat-tastic playable prologue for Cats on Duty is now available to download for free!



It’s a purr-fectly hilarious and action-packed blend of real-time strategy, tower defense, and match-3 mechanics, where heavily armed battle-hardened cat veterans of rodent skirmishes and yarn tangles take charge in defending their homeland (and litter boxes) against the forces of great evil!

The Steam Prologue contains the whole first chapter of Cats on Duty spread over 10 captivating levels, each showcasing a unique challenge and certain game feature. There is even a minigame, and a full boss fight to get your claws into, to prepare you for what’s to come in the final game.

Here you can also try out the co-op mode with your friends or family. One player focuses on the tile-matching field of the game screen to win the food needed to recruit and upgrade your battle cats while the other builds an unbreakable line of defense. Co-op mode can be easily activated or deactivated from the start menu or as you play.

With ‘cat’ and ‘kitten’ difficulty levels available, you can adjust game difficulty on the fly should you find the current level too hard or too easy for your skills or mood. You will also be able to carry over your Prologue save files into the main game so you can either continue from where you left off or reset the game progress in the settings menu and start over!

While we have been focusing considerable resources on completing the Age of Darkness: Final Stand Campaign, it’s now time to talk about one of the major Survival updates coming up in Exile’s Return.



Fall In, Attention!

Formations is a highly requested feature allowing players more tools and flexibility to fine tune the positioning of troops. On the battlefield, this means the ability to move units together at a matching speed, and to more easily define the position of individual units without microing them on a per unit basis. Players can now move groups of faster, stronger units to defend slower more expensive units with a click, and guarantee they won’t be caught wandering alone. All this adds up to very bad news for Nightmares!

Form and Function

Players play as per usual, but can now right click-drag or click S (or the bind for Formation command) then right click-drag to perform a formation command.



To adjust orientation and size, simply click, hold and drag your mouse. To adjust the spacing of units, click, hold and use your scroll wheel.

Units will automatically sort into an order that benefits their combat role effectively, for example, melee units will take their place at the front of a formation, and ranged units will stay at the back.

Units in formations are given matched speeds, meaning if a faster unit and a slower unit are in a formation command together, their speed will be averaged as to ensure they approximately move and arrive together. Certain thresholds break the formation into small sub-formations, such as having a group of rogues (fastest) and catapults (slowest) in the same formation, or if they’re required to travel very long distances.



Hold the Line

We’re continuing to push towards the launch of Exile’s Return in 2023, creating new content and introducing new features, such as Formations. Much of the work we are doing also has the effect of improving other systems, for example Formations assisting with pathing updates, an ongoing effort for Age of Darkness: Final Stand. Expect more updates shortly.

Last week we talked about what Astral Rifts were, how they were formed, and what you could find in them. We also briefly mentioned something nebulous about a new resource called Astral Threads and what you can do with them. We call these, simply enough, Astral Actions.

Let's dig a little deeper.

Astral Threads​

Conceptually, an Astral Thread is the material that binds the boundaries between dimensions. In areas where these boundaries are weakest, these filaments of existence unravel to the point at which they become tangible objects that can be harvested. This unique resource can be put to various uses should you possess the proper technologies and level of attunement to the Astral Planes.

You'll first be able to gather Astral Threads when you encounter an Astral Scar, which you'll remember from our last post are minor tears in space-time present at map-generation. As when discovering other rare resources such as Dark Matter or Rare Crystals, you'll be prompted to begin researching a new technology: Astral Harvesting.



This means you can begin gathering this material before you ever set foot inside of a Rift. But what can you do with it?

Discovery Tab​



First, let's cover where you can find the Astral Actions.

We have taken this opportunity to create a new category on the sidebar: Discoveries. This category now contains all Relics and Astral Actions you have acquired. This means, of course, that Relics and Minor Artifact actions have been removed from the Society Management Category. With the addition of Astral Actions, more Relics, and a particular action that can manipulate Relics, this made practical sense to do.

Another extra feature we've added here is that you can now click Minor Artifacts or Astral Threads in the topbar dropdown to move immediately to this category - similar to how you can click the other resources to open the Galactic Market.

Astral Actions​



Generally, these are various empire-wide effects that you can activate by spending Astral Threads. Some actions are repeatable on a cooldown, while others have a limited amount of uses. All actions generally have something to do with manipulating space-time or interacting with other dimensions.

When you first look here, you won't have many actions you can do at all. You'll need to attune yourself to the Planes in order to master their use. In other words, the more Astral Rifts you explore, the more actions you will unlock. After exploring 5 Astral Rifts, you will have unlocked all possible actions. Generally, the higher the attunement level required, the more powerful the action.

Thread Count​



Initially, you will start at an Astral Thread cap of 500. This seems quite low, but increasing this cap comes naturally with increasing your level of attunement. With each Rift explored, you'll bump the cap up by 250. There is also a special structure called the Astral Siphon you can unlock which can increase the cap even further.

Many actions will increase in cost as you use them, so you'll need to be sure to increase your cap if you intend on using these routinely.

Let's show a few examples.

Astral Splitting​



Astral Splitting will be one of the first actions available to you. Every 10 years, if you have the available space, you can utilize Astral Threads to tear at the space-time within your own borders and open a new Rift. Astral Rifts cannot open if one already exists in an adjacent system, so keep that in mind.

This is an example of an action that has both a limited number of uses, and an increasing cost. All 'limited use' actions are organized on the bottom row of the Astral Action tab.

This action is useful if you haven't gotten very lucky in your explorations and found as many natural Rifts as you'd hoped.

Dimensional Lock​



Here we have an example of a more powerful action with unlimited uses.

The Dimensional Lock allows you, for the first time in Stellaris, to prevent movement across wormholes and other bypasses. This will last for 10 years, and only those with whom you have Open Border agreements can pass through. Have a vulnerable back door into the heart of your empire? This might be worth taking advantage of.

Note: This won't work on the Shroud Tunnel in the Shroudwalker enclave, or the main L-Gate in its cluster. It can only block links between two exact points in space, not nexus points. To be clear, it will still work on Shroud Tunnels created from beacons, and normal L-Gates.

Hyper Relay Insight​

There are a few actions that give bonuses to features from the Overlord expansion, specifically for Hyper Relays and Quantum Catapults.



If you have not yet researched Hyper Relay technology, Hyper Relay Insight will give you a boost to get started in doing so.

Once researched, this action will become something entirely new: Flash Forging Hyper Relays

Flash Forge Hyper Relays​



This action is unique in that it is the only one that costs another resource in addition to Astral Threads. At double the normal Influence cost, you'll be able to instantly place a Hyper Relay anywhere you like. If you ever find yourself in a situation where building your space highway becomes a priority, this should help out considerably. Like Dimensional Locks, this action is infinitely repeatable with a cooldown.

What else can you do?​

We're only detailing a few of the actions available to you and saving the rest to be discovered. Some you may have guessed already by their icons, and some you may have not.

Ufff!

All this month I worked on adding new features to the game and improve its visual. More precisely, I defined most of the jobs that can be performed by omins and the most important upgrades that can be applied to houses and workers huts. This was a big step because permitted to solve some lacks in the gameplay of the upcoming demo.

After that, I started to work on a more exciting and spectacular feature: special attacks!
You will see below a video showing fire mages casting firestorms and ice mages casting icestorms. More attacks are coming later. You can follow the progress on the Development board at the link below.

Omins perform different types of jobs in order to collector resources, construct buildings and craft components for armors and weapons. Woodcutters are in charge of chopping wood; hunters kill animals in order to take their meat and skin; miners extract minerals and so on... Other jobs will be created in the future like the foresters, the herborist and the carrier.

In order to recruit a new worker, the player needs to assign an omin to workers huts which can be upgraded to unlock new jobs. A gatherers hut can be upgraded to a farmers hut; a sticks collectors hut can be upgraded to a woodcutters hut. A craftsmen hut can be upgraded to either a component makers hut or to a builders hut and so on... Workers hut can be also improved to unlock new functionalities, for example the capability to define a different work area.

Soldiers can learn special attacks after levelling up and reaching a new rank. These attacks spend a lot of stamina and have a cooldown. The attacks that can be learned depend on the type of soldier. In the video accessible from the link below we can see fire mages casting firestorms and ice mages casting icestorms. New attacks are coming later, also for warriors and rangers.
