Escape From Meat City - Cop in Mall Torture


After a ridiculously long wait, a humongous update! The biggest and most immediately obvious change is a big update to how the game looks: outlines! This game along with improvements to lighting, post processing, and visuals across every map! Also: fully functional ammo economy! Play the game with infinite ammo turned off and you can actually still win! New powerups! Improved weapon animations! New enemies! And more!

There is a small patch coming shortly to fix a few visual issues caused by the new changes (specifically, the thin pixel artifacts around the edges of some of the weapon viewmodels) and then it will probably be a bit before the next major content update. I am currently hard at work on a major level overhaul that will see all of the maps completely replaced with new, built-from-scratch versions, and major changes to the core game mode. Because of how fundamental those changes are, I can't put out that update in pieces until its completely done, so be patient and you will be rewarded :)

FULL CHANGELIST:
  • Fixed a bug where weapon recoil would sometimes get interrupted or stop working
  • Added scroll wheel weapon swapping
  • Replaced baked lighting with dynamic lighting in all levels. This eliminates lots of lighting/shadowing errors that were making some areas look bad, and reduces the download size of the game, but may lead to reduced performance.
  • Added new outline shading and post processing effects! This makes a huge difference to the overall look of the game and I think it makes everything look way cooler. This came with changes to lighting and some visual improvements across all the levels.
  • Added some always-spawned ammo vendors to all levels to make playing with infinite ammo turned off more viable. This ensures all ammo types will always be available on every level.
  • Added manually placed ammo pickups to all levels
  • Added a new enemy type: the Agency!
  • Improved spawning system to reduce enemies spawning inside of things. Still happens sometimes but less
  • Added new powerup: Grenade Belt! Drops grenades behind you when you boost!
  • Added new powerup: Lead Digestor! Heals you every time you pick up ammo!
  • Significantly increased yield of all ammo pickups
  • Fixed sniper rifles not being able to scope properly
  • Added passive weapon sway (visual only, does not affect firing accuracy)
  • Made sludge easier to see
  • Replaced ammo pickup text with a new HUD element
  • Added destructible crates that have a 50/50 chance of spawning some ammo when smashed
  • Added explosive barrels and tanks

PATCH 14 IS NOW AVAILABLE

Outer Wilds and Echoes of the Eye Patch 14 is now available! This is a small patch to address some issues on the Steam Deck, and we fixed some bugs while we were at it. It includes accessibility improvements on all platforms: a new Large UI Mode, improvements to the legibility of some button icons, and an FOV slider on consoles!

Introducing: Large UI mode!
We hope this mode will help folks playing on smaller screens or who just wish the text and UI was a bit bigger. By default, the game will automatically detect what size the UI should be based on your platform and display. If you’d like to manually set the size, simply go to Options > Audio & Language > UI Size. You can then choose between Auto, Regular, or Large.

Patch 1.1.14 Changes:

Gameplay
  • New Gamma calibration screen. Currently, there is an issue with the new Gamma Calibration screen where mouse input doesn’t work. This can be worked around by pressing "E" or "Enter" on your keyboard to confirm your selection.
  • Damage received only in your mind no longer counts toward the "Die Hard" achievement
  • The player's dead body can no longer trigger ship log entries
  • Translator tool bug fixed where it would sometimes break when "auto-equip translator" is turned off
  • Pursuers no longer pass through certain barriers
  • Minor adjustments to the Starlit Village
  • You can no longer parkour yourself out of [REDACTED]
Art & Visuals
  • Plants no longer appear to "glow" when gamma is set to High
  • Lights no longer glow through the Ship dashboard
  • Players probe no longer gets mis-scaled when fired at certain spots
  • A certain cosmic event is now correctly visible through a specific screen
  • Fix for certain weather phenomena not correctly forming on Giant's Deep under specific circumstances
  • Materials on certain masks now match
  • Various fixes for assets floating or intersecting in odd ways
  • Various fixes for incorrect, misaligned or missing textures and materials
  • Various fixes for issues where the player could get stuck
  • Various fixes for missing or odd collisions

Tech
  • Fixed invisible gravity crystals
  • Fix for certain areas thinking the player is outside of its LOD zone when the player enters the area under specific circumstances

  • Fix for the screen going black during some vertical transitions in the DLC
  • Fixed a few issues with the ship's align-with-target behavior in landing mode
UI
  • New Large UI mode! To manually set UI size, go to Options > Audio & Language > UI Size
  • Improved legibility of button icons for control sticks, shoulder buttons, and triggers
  • Reorganized the Graphics Menu Options
  • HUD markers now display the correct distance to objects inside Dark Bramble
  • Various UI bug fixes
Text & Localization
  • Fixed missing characters in various languages most notably Chinese, Japanese, and Korean
  • Improved line breaks and spacing in various languages
  • Fixed various typos
PC Only Changes
  • Workaround for NVidia driver bug is now disabled by default. If you have an NVidia card, please make sure that you have updated to driver version 528.02 or later. (Workaround can still be enabled by editing the secret settings file.)
  • Updated default graphics settings when playing on Steam Deck
  • Minor code fixes and improvements for the modding community. Happy hunting!

Thanks again for taking the time to send us so many awesome questions. This time we decided to stick mostly to Underground Blossom related questions but worry not, we will host more general Q&As in the future.

First, a little introduction in case you are new to The Lake:

About Rusty Lake

Rusty Lake is an indie game studio based in Amsterdam, founded by Robin Ras & Maarten Looise. Since 2015, we have developed 16 surrealistic point-and-click adventure games in the Rusty Lake Universe. The story of all these games are intertwined and every instalment reveals more about the Rusty Lake mysteries.

We have released the following games on PC and mobile: Cube Escape Collection (bundle of our 9 Cube Escape episodes), Cube Escape: Paradox, Samsara Room and four premium games: Rusty Lake Hotel, Rusty Lake: Roots, Rusty Lake Paradise and The White Door. The Past Within, our first co-op experience, was released last year and tomorrow, on September 27th, we will release Underground Blossom.

@malthunos: How did you get the idea to develop Laura’s story in a subway? 🚇

When we brainstorm about new Rusty Lake games, we often start by thinking about interesting locations. A subway or metro station was in our heads for a long time. Eventually, we enjoyed the idea that a metro stop could symbolise a new chapter in someone’s life. Sharing more about Laura Vanderboom’s (secret) life turned out to be the perfect fit for this location for a game, we only had to wait for the right moment.

@onaiashraf: How long will the game be? 🕰️

Over the past 3 months, we held as many playtests as possible. Some sessions took over 3 hours, while others were much quicker and finished the game within 1.5 hours. Therefore we estimate a normal playthrough of Underground Blossom at 2 hours. But your journey doesn’t simply end after the final station…

Underground Blossom will have seven standard stations.

@amiito23_’s: How important is music or the theme going to be to Underground Blossom…? 🌸

As we mentioned in our Devlog 2 last week, music and sound have been among the most important parts of this game. The piano and cello worked so well to enhance the (emotional) journey of Laura. We cannot thank all our musicians enough for their incredible work, Victor, Sebastiaan, Remco and, of course, our sound designers, Jorick and Giliam, did a tremendous job of getting the perfect metro atmosphere for the game.

@r_no_registrada’s: Do I need the other games to discover the secrets of UB? 🦉

Most secrets in Underground Blossom can be found without prior knowledge of our other games. But we do recommend to have at least played the Cube Escape Collection (free on mobile). As always, all our games are connected in one way or another and Underground Blossom won’t be any different. So only our die-hard fans can collect the 34 achievements without hints/a walkthrough!

@nowhere: Will you keep the secret ARG level from UB Lite in the full version? It was so enlightening! 📼

Yes, you can still reach the Best Kept Memory station in the full game 🙂

@gracie._.smiles22: What was the hardest bug to fix? 🐛

Last night we fixed a bug that removed one item and duplicated the other in your inventory. While this rare bug was already mentioned in the Lite/Demo version, we never figured out how to fix it. Until last night. We somehow experienced the same bug again and Ruben, our main play tester and bug hero, gathered the right info to reproduce it. Because of the frame-by-frame movie clip he made, we were able to see exactly what happened and we fixed the code just in time!

@mc_puddlls’s: How many voices will there be in the game? Will it have more than one voice actor? 🗣️

Unfortunately, our best and beloved voice actor Bob Rafferty won’t be the only one voicing the characters this time around (although he would have loved to). Just like in The White Door, Bob Rafferty, Iris Muller and Sara Hill are our main voice actors, but this time we got help from several different voice actors to bring the right quality to the game. But then again, there are more characters in-game, so you might know who helped us out here.

@PurpleMcgee: Will there ever be a reveal of why Rose left Laura? 🌹

Yes! But we cannot say too much about this yet.

@reyyanbetul_akgul’s: Which languages will be in the new game? 🌎

Our amazing group of translators together with our localization manager, Luuk, made Underground Blossom available in 21 languages! Please double-check your store (mobile or PC) to see if your language is available. We hope to add more languages in the future, but it costs a lot of time and hard work (from both sides) to implement a language correctly, hence why it will take us time to implement more languages.

@alr.saraa’s: Not about the development process but will you have a #laketober this year? 🎨

Yes! October would not exist without #Laketober. Our community managers Andreea, Damy and our mod team on Discord cannot wait to share the prompt list very soon! And yes it will be centred around Underground Blossom!

Bug Fix
  • Fixed the issue where you could not earn the “First Step” achievement on Steam, despite it unlocking in-game
    • Those who have already encountered the bug will be able to unlock the achievement when they click “Continue” from the main menu--ta-da! 🎉
The update won’t interrupt your gameplay, and prompt you with the download the next time you play Dropkick Navvy: First Step. However, we strongly recommend you install the update as soon as possible for the best gameplay experience!
