Death From Above: A Ukrainian Drone Warstory - Nuno
Welcome soldiers - we have some new recruits for you to meet in our latest free content update named “For our freedom and yours”! We've begun our work on the mission structure to streamline the narrative, fixed some bugs, inevitably added some new ones and generally sprinkled joy over the game, we think you’re going to like it.

The biggest news this week, however, is that we’re joined on the battlefield by two very special new units: the Kastuś Kalinoŭski Regiment from Belarus and The Polish Legion - both formed by volunteer soldiers from Ukraine’s neighbors.

These units are putting everything on the line for the freedom of Ukraine, risking their lives as they fight alongside the troops of the Ukrainian armed forces to liberate their neighbors from Russian oppression.

Tens of thousands of Ukrainians are on the front lines every day of course, but it’s a very special sort of soldier who will take up arms and defend the sovereignty, freedom and self-determination of another nation. We wanted to recognise that heroism by featuring skins from each unit for both your operator and drone in game. Additionally, both the game and the Steam page are now fully translated into Polish and Belarusian!

Kastuś Kalinoŭski Battalion



This unit of Belarusian volunteers, opposed to the reign of president Alexander Lukashenko, comprises around 1500 soldiers and was formed specifically to defend Ukraine against Russian aggression in 2022. The battalion is named after Kastuś Kalinoŭski, one of the leaders of the 1863 January Uprising against the Russian Empire.

Formally admitted into the Ukrainian Ground Forces under oath in 2022, the unit participated in the liberation of Irpin in the Kyiv oblast. The Battalion has not limited its objectives to the freedom of Ukraine. With the motto ‘First Ukraine, then Belarus’, unit commanders have made clear that they intend to free their homeland from Putin’s influence via Lukashenko too, telling Belarusian citizens to “Wait for the signal” to begin the operation to free Belarus.

The Polish Legion



A more recent addition to the Ukrainian forces, the Polish Legion is formed from Polish nationals who have volunteered for the conflict. The Polish Legion is an organization uniting Polish volunteers and volunteers from other countries who defend Ukraine, Poland, and Europe against the Russian invasion. The Legion's goal is to support Ukraine in its heroic struggle against the Russian aggressor, drawing upon our shared history.  

Currently, the Legion has three divisions - Support, Combat, and Cooperation. They engage not only in active combat assistance but also in humanitarian aid. They facilitate cooperation between the Ukrainian side and foreign companies, provide innovative AI equipment and drones, establish a Training Center for Operators, and support other Polish organizations. 

We’ve also made several changes to various missions and mechanics, as well as some quality-of-life improvements. See the full list of patch notes below.

GAMEPLAY CHANGES:
  • Improved general aiming AI of characters (Huntress learned how to aim).
  • Player's hitbox radius reduced when controlling both solo and duo teams.
  • Healthpack collected amount needed to unlock The Medic reduced to 100 (from 200).
  • "Banish" option now leaves an opportunity to pick other choices on the same Level-up/Chest selection screen.
  • Skill-tree: It is no longer required to have at least one point spend in the upgrade above the currently selected skill to upgrade it.
  • Chests and SOS Signals now have the same activation distance and time requirements (1 second).
  • "Reroll" option now grants choices that are different than the current ones (when possible).
  • Stats clamping system improved to clamp values when they are read, instead of when written.
  • "Bloom" setting added to graphics settings in the game's options.
QUALITY OF LIFE:
  • Mouse Movement option added in the game's settings: OFF (default) / On Click / Always.
  • It is now possible to use 1/2/3 (X/Y/B) buttons to make a selection on the Level-up/SOS Signal/Chest screens.
  • On-screen indicator arrows and dots are now distict, animated, and are displayed over the low-health vignette visual effect.
  • On-screen indicators for currently equipped weapons and their reload status, displayed above the skills and their cooldowns.
  • Skill-tree: Added an option to refund single upgrade points from each skill, instead of doing a whole skill-tree reset.
  • Feedback Form (F8) shortcut is now remappable within the Remap Controls option in game's options.
  • There is now a new feedback effect for successfully parrying incoming damage.
  • Endless Mode: A new Pause Menu option was added, allowing to conclude the run.
  • Added a confirmation window when trying to quit the current run.
ISSUE & BUG FIXES:
  • Remapped controls should now properly save.
  • Random floating boss healthbars should no longer appear.
  • Fixed the ingame UI not displaying properly on widescreen resolutions.
  • "Liberate" SOS Signal option now correctly shows the money received (taking modifiers into account).
  • SWAT: "Helicopter Strike" ability helicopter no longer despawns when multiple helicopters are active at the same time.
  • Engineer: "Laser" weapon now properly uses Damage Per Second property instead of Damage.
  • Engineer: "Energy Shield" ability now properly shows its duration on the level-up screen.
  • Medic: "Stimpack" ability now works properly (before, it was adding a bonus of +0.25% instead of +25%).
  • Medic: Zombies killed by the antidote/vaccine effect now properly count as kills done by the Medic.
  • "Heavy Metal" item now properly displays +250 HP restored on magnet pickup, instead of +50 HP.
  • "Healing Potion" item now properly displays "Current Health" instead of "Health".
  • Life Steal values are now properly hidden when "Damage Numbers" option is toggled OFF.
  • Localization improvements (eg. Ghost's unlock text field in Polish language).
  • Other minor fixes & improvements.
GLOBAL BALANCE IMPROVEMENTS:
  • Base Critical Damage reduced to 150% (from 200%).
  • Freezing effects now slows zombies by 75% (from 50%).
  • Exploding Zombie damaging area/fog radius decreased by 10%.
  • Healing option on Level-up screen has its value increased 500 (from 200).
  • Money option on the Level-up screen has its value increased to 500 (from 300).
  • "Stone Skin" power-up active duration reduced to 5s (from 8s).
  • "It's Raining Men" achievement's number of required airborne zombies reduced to 10 (from 20).
  • "It's Over 9000!" achievement's timeframe has been reduced to 2s (from 5s).
SURVIVOR BALANCE IMPROVEMENTS:
  • SWAT: Leader perk now grants 5/10/20% Weapon Reload Speed (from 2.5/5/10%).
  • SWAT: "Helicopter strike" ability collision box width increased to 12 (from 9).

  • Tank: Leader perk now gives +10/20/30 Armor instead of +100/200/300 max HP.
  • Tank: "Minefield" ability base cooldown reduced to 20s (from 30s).

  • Engineer: "Electric Turret" ability cooldown reduced to 15s (from 30s).
  • Engineer: "Electric Turret" ability now increases its range on level-up instead of reducing cooldown.

  • Huntress: "Eagle Eye" ability now also grants +10% Critical Damage per ability level.
  • Huntress: "Explosive Arrows" and "Freezing Arrows" weapons has now increased Fire Rate.
  • Huntress: "Explosive Arrows" weapon projectiles now explode after 0.75s (from 1s).

  • Ghost: "Kunai" ability cooldown reduced to 5s (from 10s).
  • Ghost: "Critical Protocol" ability now grants +35% Critical Chance and +50% Critical Damage.

  • Medic: Antidote/vaccine effect strength increased by around 15%.
  • Medic: "Handgun" weapon base damage increased to 45 (from 35).
  • Medic: "Handgun" weapon damage per level increased to +20 (from +10).
  • Medic: "Syringe Gun" weapon base damage per second increased to 40 (from 20).
  • Medic: "Syringe Gun" weapon now shortens the Reload Time on level-up instead of increasing the Fire Rate.
  • Medic: "Antidote Flask" and "Freezing Flasks" weapons base throw interval lowered to 2s (from 4s).
  • Medic: "Antidote Flask" weapon base and per second damage increased to 40 (from 30).
  • Medic: "Antidote Flask" weapon minimal damage per tick increased to 10.
  • Medic: "Antidote Flask" weapon damage per second increased to 15 (from 10).
  • Medic: "Freezing Flask" weapon damage increased to 100 (from 20... oof!).

This is the next big chapter for Of Blades & Tails, which adds a new region to the world, with a completely new biome and settlement. It also brings a Combat Arena and allows you to compete with other players in the leaderboard.

The Combat Arena

The arena can be found in the northern end of Murzork.
It features 2 competitions:

[h4]The Leaderboard Challenge[/h4]

  • Endless waves of alternating types of enemies.
  • Players earn an arena score by defeating as many enemies as possible.
  • Arena score can be boosted with Combo Multipliers, when multiple enemies are defeated in very few turns.
  • Each player who participates is ranked in the leaderboard.
  • The leaderboard can be viewed just outside of the arena.
  • All difficulty modes (Relaxed, Adventure, Challenge) are normalized in this competition. Allowing all players to compete in the same leaderboard under the same conditions.
  • Enemy levels range from 22 to 40+.
    Be prepared for a definitive challenge!

[h4]The Tournament[/h4]

  • A quest is offered to the player to compete in the tournament.
  • It contains 5 individual stages.
  • Each stage offers a unique challenge.
  • This tournament will also be part of the upcoming story line quest.
    (You can complete it now or later.)
  • The "Champion of the Arena" is granted a new legendary armor.

Items & Equipment

  • A legendary item has been added: Champion Body Armor

  • Several smaller fixes.
  • Improved several translations.

Savegame Compatibility

Savegames from version 0.17.x are compatible and future savegames will remain compatible as well :)




What's next

This will most likely be the last major content update before the 1.0 release! 😮
Feels pretty unreal to write this actually. We started EA last October and now we're in a great spot to reach the estimated timeline of ~1 year to full release.

So here's the (rough) plan until then: I will work on all the remaining story quests, the guild quests and of course the final region/encounter. Then there are still a bunch of smaller feature requests and QoL improvements on my list, which I will try to put in another minor update 0.19 along the way.
I'm planning to take my time with all of this and not rush it. Therefore I can't give you any exact dates right now. All I can say is: Stay tuned, we're almost there! 😊

Яны спецыялізуюцца на паветранай разведцы і барацьбе з дронамі, імкнучыся палепшыць сітуацыйную дасведчанасць і дасведчанасць на полі бою, а таксама кібербяспеку. Яны распрацоўваюць дроны і вучаць аператараў найлепшым метадам разгортвання. Яны таксама ўдзельнічаюць у распрацоўцы цэнтралізаваных цэнтраў збору і апрацоўкі дадзеных для падтрымкі намаганняў Украіны ў галіне бяспекі і абароны

«ГIC Арта» — украінскі вайсковы распрацоўшчык праграмнага забеспячэння, які стварае сістэмы кіравання полем бою, каб, сярод іншага, дапамагчы ўкраінскай арміі кіраваць і разгортваць беспілотнікі.

Гэтыя арганізацыі передаюць нам свой вопыт у барацьбе з дронамі і дапамагаюць нам рэалізаваць наша бачанне Death From Above найлепшым чынам.

Ахвяраванні пойдуць:


«Повернись живим» — гэта найбуйнейшы фонд, які аказвае кампетэнтную дапамогу ўкраінскім абаронцам з 2014 года. Іх мэта — захаваць жыццё ўкраінскіх абаронцаў перад тварам акупантаў, набываючы неабходнае абсталяванне і дастаўляючы яго на перадавую, каб яны маглі выратаваць грамадзянскія жыцці. Фонд пастаўляе цеплавізійныя прыборы, генератары, радыёстанцыі, GPS-навігатары, БЛА, аўтамабілі, бронекамізэлькі, сродкі абароны, сувязі і разведкі. Інструктары фонду вучаць вайскоўцаў кіраванню дронамі, супрацьміннай бяспецы і тактычнай медыцыне.

«Армія дронів» — сумесны комплексны праект Генэральнага штабу Ўзброеных Сіл Украіны, Дзяржспэцсувязі, Міністэрства лічбавай трансфармацыі і Міністэрства абароны Ўкраіны, які арганізуе і праводзіць закупку БПЛА (Беспiлотныя Лятальныя Апараты), пастаўляе іх у войска, вучыць аператараў кіраваць дронамі і падтрымлівае украінскія стартапы і вытворцаў у галіне БПЛА для развіцця ваенна-тэхнічнага сектара Украіны

- Only Guild members can start mixes in a Guild. Non-members can still join and help.
- Only the Village owner can start a mix in a Village. Other wizards can join in and help.
