Strategic Mind: Spirit of Liberty - Prologue 1939 - omenlost
Emblematic of the whole Winter War, the Battle of Suomussalmi pitched about 11,000 Finnish troops (starting as a small, understrength contingent) against several Soviet divisions totaling from 40,000 to 55,000 troopers. Against these outrageous odds the Finns managed to not only beat back the invader, but deal tremendous casualties in one of the most famous encirclements of the Winter War – the Raate Road motti.
The Soviet plan was simple, and on the surface rather ingenious. A strike on Suomussalmi, sitting in the middle of the eastern Finnish border, could, if successful, allow for a westward push all the way to Oulu, where the much-needed weapon shipments from abroad were coming by rail. A swift armored advance could cleave Finland in half, leave it without Western aid, and split apart the already tiny and worse-equipped Finnish Army.
There was only one problem with that plan: the swift armored advance would take place over miles of sheer forest and swamp. This forced the Soviets to stick to the area's main road – the Raate Road – and prioritize rushing Suomussalmi in order to regroup and establish a staging area.
During the first week of the invasion, the Finnish forces in the area were insufficient to stop the enemy, and still managed to inflict heavy casualties as they retreated westward. At first, the fighting was so chaotic, many locals couldn't evacuate on time and were stuck in their homes. Once the Finnish forces took control of the situation, however, no half-measures would be taken.
The High Command decided to abandon Suomussalmi to the enemy… but not before the village was set on fire. The blaze lasted for hours, and was seen throughout the night. When the Soviet forces took the village on the next morning, they found it stripped of supplies and proper shelter – all this in the record-setting freeze of December 1939.
Around this time, the legendary Colonel Siilasvuo, the master tactician and the hero of many battles to come, assumed the command. The Finns cut all supply lines leading to the city, and prevented the enemy from establishing new ones. Siilasvuo tried to overwhelm the frozen and starving enemy, but the Soviet forces mounted a desperate defense, beating the Finns back. Around the same time, massive Soviet reinforcements were rolling towards Suomussalmi along the Raate Road, constantly harassed and making little progress.
Finally, in the closing weeks of December, the reinforcements' supply lines had collapsed as well: the main motti at Suomussalmi was joined by dozens of smaller ones along the Raate Road.
After a cold Christmas among the pines, Siilasvuo ordered another assault on Suomussalmi on December 27. And this time, when the Finns began their advance, the Soviets panicked, launching a desperate breakout across the ice. Some of them were successful, and reached the Russian border. Most did not, and the Finns made sure of it. Suomussalmi was finally liberated.
After that, the Raate Road was less of a battle and more of a mopping-up. Starved and dizzy from hypothermia, the Soviet forces could barely mount an effective resistance, while the Finns were ruthless.
This was the biggest Finnish victory by that point, making it to the front pages of numerous newspapers around the world. From the beaten enemy, the Finns captured 85 tanks, 437 trucks, including Red Army's anti-air technical trucks, 92 artillery pieces, dozens of anti-tank cannons and rifles, thousands of small arms, and over a hundred machine guns. In fact, in another display of delusional self-confidence, the reinforcements were carrying a fully-stocked military band with instruments and banners, ready for a victory parade – those were captured too.
The USSR sought to cut Finland in half, but through a massive morale boost united it even more. It sought to sow panic and discord among the Finns, but in the end, the Soviet forces were the ones panicking. Finally, it sought to deprive Finland of Western weapon shipments, but instead became Finland's greatest weapons provider.
In the game
You will have to encircle and destroy the Red Army reinforcements and then attack the bulk of the encircled enemy army, causing it to retreat in panic. Then you have to pursue to cause maximum losses and capture some of the abandoned Russian tanks for your troops. One of the key landmarks of this scenario is the “ice roads”.

It's time we announced our talented Composer & Sound Designer behind Forever Skies, introducing Paweł Błaszczak!
Paweł has previously composed tracks for well know games such as Dying Light, Dead Island & The Witcher Franchise.
Here is one of the tracks, “Lone Scientist”. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for new locations. We recently dragged Pawel away from his keyboards to find out more about him!
For those who don’t know, can you tell us what other games you’ve composed music for?
I have composed entire soundtracks for games such as Dying Light, Dead Island, Call of Juarez, The Witcher franchise and most recently, The Ascent. I have also done individual songs for the likes of EVE Online and War Thunder to name a few.
Who would you say are your biggest musical heroes in general?
I have a special place in my heart for synth and electronic music, especially from the 80’s. Composers such John Carpenter, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Vangelis or artists such as Tangerine Dream and Ultavox spring to mind.
But my biggest musical love still to this day is the old Commodore 64 system. That odd piece of hardware had so much music built into it, even though it was limited to just 3 channels. Getting hold of something like that in my early days sparked something in me that continues to this day.
Are there any films or TV shows that got you in the mood for composing the music to Forever Skies?
I only turn to film and TV (or other games for that matter) when I need to immerse myself more in a similar setting or environment to the game I am composing for. The music always comes from an original place, but getting into a headspace that matches what you are working on always helps.
Since Forever Skies is a game about isolation, apocalypse and mankind’s downfall and the need to start building again there were a few that got me into this mood. Films like - The Martian, Annihilation, Prospect and The Book of Eli and shows such as Dark or even certain episodes of Love, Death + Robots.
On top of that the book “Second Sleep” by Robert Harris also really got me into the mindset as it looks closely at the idea of systemic collapse and how people would try to continue on with life somehow.

Good morning community. As we close out the holiday season and begin a new year we hope this article finds you all in a positive place.
We have had the honor of working on the development of The Repopulation from very early on. We have seen a number of talented people come and go over the years. Our team would like to thank them for their contributions, and hard work. Their time and contributions were and still are very appreciated. From writers, GMs, and QA members, to public testers, and all those in between they’ve played an important role in development.
That is why today’s article topic comes from a heavy heart. The last couple of years have been hard on everyone, and we are so thankful for all of those who have stood with us. Despite everyone’s valiant efforts, from developers to testers, TGS has concluded that we cannot make The Repopulation viable despite our best efforts. At the end of 2021, we intended to make several updates hoping to fix the problems we have all encountered. Although we planned on rebuilding the game on the updated platform, we were not able to come to terms with IF on various business issues.
As a result, we have decided that our work developing The Repopulation must end. TGS is not the game’s owner. The game’s owner is Idea Fabrik. TGS is only a contractor. TGS does not have the authority or ability to suspend sales or provide refunds. Only Idea Frabik can do these things. Idea Fabrik is aware of the issues but we have not been told what they intend to do. TGS is turning over The Repopulation Facebook and Twitter accounts to Idea Fabrik. All future inquiries should be made to Idea Fabrik on Facebook and Twitter.
IF may attempt to remaster the game with another company, but we have not been informed as to its plans. As a result, the server, website, and discord server will be brought offline on 2023/01/13. Idea Fabrik has also not informed TGS as to whether it intends to continue to sell The Repopulation on the Steam platform.
We are extremely disappointed that we were unable to resolve the problems with The Repopulation. We worked very hard for many years on this game and we were and are invested in its success. We sincerely wish that we could have resolved these issues. We hope you will understand that we did all we could to make this game viable despite the many obstacles we encountered. We also understand that best efforts do not soften the blow of this disappointing news. Thank you all for taking this journey with us.
The Alstroemeria is a flower that symbolizes devotion and friendship. Unfortunately neither of these qualities describe Alstroemeria herself.
Alstroemeria is a mysterious woman working for Asphodel with superhuman strength and an equally powerful attitude. She seems to have the ability to channel magic current without a ring catalyst. Even without this skill, staying out of her way would be the smart thing to do.
For some reason, the mere sight of Vernal pisses her off, in fact, most things seem to piss her off? She's a very angry person, and takes this anger out on everything around her… whenever Asphodel lets her, anyway.
If you want to get all the updates about Vernal Edge, follow and wishlist the game!
Happy New Year! It's time for the first playtesting session of the new year!
We're meeting up on our Discord server and on Twitch! Feel free to follow us both on Twitch to see who's the one streaming the event. You can also join our Discord server and receive stream announcements there!
When? On Saturday, the 14th of January, 2023 on 3pm CET.
If you'd like to see the current state of the game and also have a chat with us, this might be the chance for you. We'd be happy to have you and get your feedback! It's usually a lot of fun, so keep that event in mind! But if you miss out on the playtesting this week, you're also welcome to join the next sessions!
