Adapt - DanPos

Hey all!

Dan from Slug Disco here, the publishers for Adapt :)

We are going to start posting out updates about what has been going on behind the scenes as development progresses and this is dev update number 1!

Here's all the stuff we will be sharing in this months update:

  • Attribute Redesign
  • Attack Types
  • Status Effects
  • New Diets
  • Part Rotator
  • Optimisations
  • Community showcase
So let's get stuck in!

Attribute Redesign

A major component of the 0.50a update was the redesign of the attribute system in Adapt; which basically includes all stats, genes, adaptations, and just about anything else that is composed of a name, values, and UI assets. This redesign was essential for nearly all other aspects of this update, and additionally serves to significantly simplify and expedite the introduction of future attributes of any kind, requiring almost no code to implement new stats, abilities, and genetics. This restructure also serves to lay the foundation for future mod-support by exposing all attributes and associated behaviors in an accessible pipeline. Here are some of the cool stuff that’s coming out of this change in this update.

Attack Types

Also thanks to the new attribute system, I’ve finally been able to implement something I’ve been conceptualizing for some time; which I think players will be very excited about. drumroll…

Separated Attack Types

With the 0.50a update, players will be able to cycle through multiple attack types, based on those available through their genetics. This first iteration will support the 3 current fundamental attack traits, Blunt, Pierce, and Slash, and will primarily be obtained through various Head/Mouth genetics; and cycling will work similarly to changing your mood; replacing the Q-E rotation with Q-Mood, E-Attack selection. The trade-off for this change will be that you can now only change your mood in one direction. An exciting aspect of the new Attack Types system, is that it opens the door for attack-related status effects to be evolved, which brings us to the next big addition for the 0.50a update.

Status Effects

The release of the Status Effects feature is a big deal for Adapt. Status Effects will directly tie into numerous systems in the game including habitation, combat, diet, and socializing; and will essentially replace some of the less conceptually obvious aspects of the game. (Looking at you, habitat meter).

New Diets

Two New highly requested dietary strategies are also on the way in 0.50a. Hemovore, and Nectivore Abilities will bring the total number of dietary abilities to the final total of 9.

The Hemovore ability will allow players to feed whenever they attack with the Piercing trait; and can be obtained through genetics associated with a piercing mouth, with fangs or a proboscis.

Part Rotator

While unrelated to the Attribute restructure. Part Rotation has been another highly requested feature, and one that I’ve been excited to get implemented for a long time. Players will now have complete control over placement, rotation, and scale of parts, allowing a new level of customization for their species. The Part rotator marks the first of a number of exciting editor improvements I’ve got planned.

Optimisations

Another huge, but arguably less ‘shiny’ initiative for this update was focused on improving performance. A significant portion of the last few months have been spent streamlining the games backend systems which update everything from food to physics, with more multi-core processing, and numerous fixes which could (in some cases) significantly impact performance. The result of these changes should mean a much more stable, and much smoother play experience for everyone; but will most significantly affect a subset of players who have been experiencing seemingly random frame-drops.

Community Showcase
Phew! That was a lot of updates, now let's relax and celebrate by showing off what the community have been up to :)

First up we have a video from the fantastic DarkEdgeTV where they play through the demo as an aquatic creature:

We also have the following from Blitz who tried to mate with EVERYTHING in the game:

Hopping over to the Adapt Discord we have the follow creature creations that we just had to share:

- Grog Chuggin' Huggins

- SmilePoneh

- InkStar

That's it for this update, stay tuned for our next one and update 0.50a which we hope to be able to share as soon as possible!
POSTAL 4: No Regerts - Running With Scissors [S]

With The POSTAL Movie Voice actor Zack Ward now added to the options of Dude voices, the POSTALverse is complete! This update also brings improvements to the AI/Gore system in the way of fire reactions from NPCs; watch them stop, drop and roll!

A ton of crashes have been fixed, thanks for all the reports on the forums. We very much treat them as a priority as they come up.

We’ve started to make some notable headway with performance, as well as reducing the overall footprint of the install files by ~4.5gb. This is an ongoing effort so it’s likely to come down more with each passing update. As mentioned in last week's update, this month a console porting studio will join us internally with the sole mission of improving performance on the PC side, before they start working on the console port itself.

Zack Ward’s Voice Pack!

Overhauled the system that controls NPCs on fire! You’ll notice things such as NPCs rolling whilst on fire and more!

New First-Person Kick Animation! The goal here was to make it more satisfying to kick stuff!

Improved cashier/vendor system! Cashiers now instantly handle customers that enter customer stand points. Stopped cashiers from nagging players that have left the line. Cashiers will no longer steal all of your money, for real now

More accessories to NPCs such as better looking glasses!

Portraits for Boss Health Bars

Bidet petition no longer sticks around if reverting to a checkpoint with the petition on hand and the errand completed

Performance improvements

Reduced the install size of the game by 4.5 GB

Updated Cop Badge HUD Icon

Added Crypto Bank in Riverside tile, part of the work of filling out empty spaces

Some cutscenes are now using the outfit the player is wearing, more to come soon

AI picking up placed money pickups

P3 Dude having janky ragdoll

Being unable to progress past Penthouse if skipping boss fight with milk

“Wash your hands" achievement

Various crashes

We’ll be here on the Steam forums (and Discord) if you need us.

We can’t wait to hear what you think!

We continue to observe that the player has difficulty with the game's initial quests; in the future update, we will work to simplify the game. We will try to integrate NPCs that support the player in challenging situations.

AREA MAN LIVES - Numinous Games
Hello Taylor’s of the Area Man Lives (AML) Universe! This is Mike Perrotto (@SirMrCl3an), Producer and Developer on AML at Numinous Games. We are dedicated to making AML the best experience it can be for all of our players regardless of headset, controller or platform.

Below are documented fixes, features and known issues we’re currently working on. We’ve broken the fixes into two sections; “Spoiler-Free” and “Potential Spoilers”. For those of you experiencing the story and puzzles for the first time, we wanted a way for you to see improvements to the game if you so choose, but also not spoil your experience.

Fixes (Spoiler-Free)

  • We’ve made the height more uniform, regardless of standing or sitting. If you’re height feels or looks off, try snap-rotating or teleporting and it should resolve the issue. If the height remains to feel or look off, try toggling the “Adjust Height” setting by opening the Oculus dash, then go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Mobility. If that fails, try restarting the game.
  • When the Area Man Dies, the incorrect Anchor audio was playing.
  • Fixed various subtitles that did not match the audio that was being spoken.
  • Cleaned up a number of audio cues and dialog to better match the story beats.
  • Fixed an issue with text being low-res on some of the papers hanging on the bulletin board on Steam, Viveport and Rift versions.
  • We now hide the players in-game hands when bringing up the Universal Menu on Meta Quest and Rift.

Fixes (contains Potential Spoilers)

  • After failing or reaching a false ending, we’ve removed a lot of the repeated dialog as to get the player back to the decision points much quicker. In many cases, this removed minutes of repeated content that was very frustrating.
  • During the “Mech” sequence, audio was not properly ducking when characters were speaking.
  • The reverse beeps audio could get stuck in a loop. This has now been fixed.
  • Removed the flashing lights while the phenomenon was happening. Both together were too much and an eyesore.
  • Made it so certain objects can be interacted with properly earlier in the story.
  • Made it so the player cannot enter the truck before the phenomenon, which would have resulted in the player being spun around, causing potential discomfort in the experience.

Known Issues we’re looking into (contains potential spoilers)

  • Sand dunes outside the window during the beach sequence are white instead of their intended shade.
  • Holding items in the comic book shop, persist into the radio station.
  • Trying to record a commercial during the call-in-show causes the call-in-show to not progress. If you get into this state, just reload your save and you should start right before the call-in-show.
  • Recording a commercial does not complete the “Record New Commercials” on the To-Do list. This is also preventing 100% completion status of the game.
  • On the PC builds, we are getting reports that when the game starts to detect speech input, it can stutter for multiple seconds. This seems to be localized to a Quest/Quest 2 headset connected to a PC via link cable. Rift S and Viveport headsets seems to not have the stutter. One workaround is to change your microphone to your PC mic (or a mic connected to your PC) instead of using the headset’s mic.
  • Sometimes subtitles do not clear when a character is done speaking and sometimes they do not update with the last line of text.
  • When repeating the shortened version of the first part of the game, there is more dialog we’d like to remove on subsequent playthroughs to make it less frustrating. That change will be modified in our next patch.
  • Sometimes one of the hands stops being able to target objects with the laser pointer. Usually picking the object up directly with that hand and dropping it will reset the hand and allow laser pointing again.
Price of Power - ThePandaman
Hi all! Just a quick dev update for everyone. Development is going as planned on Chapter 11 and we're on track for a release on June 23rd. I'm currently working on scene 4/5 of Chapter 11 and aiming to get that out to alpha testers some time this weekend. After that, it'll just be scene 5 left to complete, then final testing before release! I'm also working on creating a new trailer for Act 3 as well as improving my marketing/storefront materials in time for this release. There's lots to do, but I should be able to get everything done at this rate. :)
