Gloria Victis: Medieval MMORPG - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Sin Vega)

One of the things I appreciate most in an MMO is the ability to wander off and do my own thing. It might seem contrarian (and it is), but putting aside my awkward, antisocial nature, there’s real value in a busily populated world where you can opt out of the ratkilling race. Some argue that being able to play solo in an MMO defeats the point of the whole format. But then, arguing this relies on the assumption that if you play an MMO, you’re going to try to complete the game – that you’ll do whatever’s necessary to have the biggest numbers.

However, it’s exactly because of the fact that this assumption is> true, for crowds of people, that stepping off the path to pick your favourite flowers is so appealing. Personally, I play MMOs because I want to live in a world a bit. I usually don’t want to become the all-powerful hero. I just want to wander about. See the bits someone else has made, maybe poke some of those bits to see what they do. I’ll probably specialise in something everyone else scoffs at. Gloria Victis is an MMO that seems to enable people like me. I’ve only played a bit, so it’s far too early for me to judge it fully, but you can usually tell right away if an MMO is going to fight you. Given that within mere moments of creating a character, GV let me run into its outskirts, where I began shooting pickpockets in the face and staring confusedly at diggers, I think it might be my sort of thing.

The Legend of Bum-Bo - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Matt Cox)

Bum-bo has to deal with a lot of crap. Sometimes that crap is very literal, sentient, and coming straight for him. Sometimes, the crap is still literal, but it’s his tool and his shield. It fuels his nightmares, and his special abilities. It’s his deuce in the hole.

Crap jokes feel inevitable here, because The Legend Of Bum-Bo is a prequel to The Binding Of Issac. It’s set in the same universe, which is one governed by pee and sweat and poo. Despite this, however, it’s a very different kind of roguelike, which swaps out twitchy exploration for turn-based, match-four puzzle grids. I’ve grown to quite like it, even though at first it made me want to tear my hair out and throw clumps at Edmund McMillen’s disgusting menagerie, potentially adding to it in the process.

The Oculus Quest just got a little bit better. Well, for some people at least. As of November 18, Oculus’ Link software is now in beta, meaning Quest owners can now play PC-based Rift games using their portable headset. There are, however, some pretty big catches, like the fact you need an Nvidia-based gaming PC in order for it to work because it currently doesn’t support any> kind of AMD graphics card. Read on to see exactly what you need in order to get started.

Destiny 2 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

After a six-week Blue Peter appeal asking heroes to send in any Vex parts they might have kicked off time-travelling robots, Destiny 2 has finished building a gadget to begin the Final Assault of the Vex Offensive. It’s a very Guardian-y plan to stop a foe who exists in myriad timelines: just keep killing them until you’ve got them all. The reality is a little disappointing, just a new boss at the end of the same old six-player cooperative mode – and we don’t even enter through the ‘portal’ we helped build in the Tower. But hey, you can now complete your season title.

We Happy Few - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Natalie Clayton)

You can only keep a population subdued by state-enforced drugs and totalitarian policing for so long. 60s Brit-hell adventure We Happy Few received its third and final story DLC today, We All Fall Down, and it’s tearing the whole cheery facade down. Everything’s quite on fire, and new heroine Victoria brings a little bit of Dishonored to the mix with grappling skills that’d make and self-respecting Kaldwin proud.

Merry old Uncle Jack might be feeling the burn, but there’s still some room to squeeze those last drops of Joy out of Wellington Wells’ dystopian hell.

Shenmue III - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Natalie Clayton)

It’s only gone and come out, hasn’t it? Four years after its controversial, record-breaking $6 million Kickstarter campaign, Shenmue 3 is finally a game you can pick up and play. Blimey, it’s only been 18 years since the last one. Shenmue’s had a rough road to release, full of publisher scandals and delay after delay after delay. But it’s finally time to pick up where Shenmue 2 left off in 2001, with teen martial artist Ryo Hazuki traipsing around rural China looking for the folks who killed his dear old dad.
