Updates to Team Fortress 2 have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

  • Fixed bug with holiday date computation that turned on Birthday Mode a few days too soon

Left 4 Dead 2 Update Released
Left 4 Dead 2 - Valve
Updates to Left 4 Dead 2 have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

Mutation
  • Developer Choice - Last Man On Earth

UI
  • Added vote option to enable All Talk in Versus.
  • Added vote option to Restart Chapter in Versus.
  • Added the ability in the lobby for all players to vote on starting the game.

Gameplay
  • Removed Defibs and First Aid Kits in Realism Versus. Survivors start with a First Aid Kit, but all world spawns are disabled.

Addons
  • To avoid conflicts between Community Campaigns, only content vpks get loaded when starting a campaign.
  • Added console command "show_addon_load_order" that prints out the order of loaded vpk files.

Authoring Tools
  • VPK files now support their own sound.cache file.
  • Use the command "snd_buildsoundcachefordirectory " to create the sound.cache file that you should include when you create your vpk file.

Updates to Sol Survivor have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

Sol Survivor 1.7 fixes:
  • Fixed Survival Co-op resource modes having no effect.
  • Fixed clients being unable to return the the menu while a game is in progress.
  • Fixed a rare crash when starting games.
  • Fixed a crash when using the Bypass Campaign option.
  • Increased the lobby connection timeout.
  • Added resource modes to Versus.
  • Added sudden death to Wars games that reach maximum escalation.

Survey Results Are In!

As usual, the results of this month's Steam Hardware Survey have been collected, processed, and published, creating a useful cross-section of the overall community's installed computer equipment. Thanks to all of you who chose to participate, sharing your system information with us! We mentioned recently that as of July the survey collects a list of participants' installed software as well, and so it is now the Steam Hardware and Software Survey.

Valve has a long history of collecting statistics through our products and then sharing that information with the community (and whoever else will listen.) We use this kind of information to improve our games and services as much as we can, and we've heard from others in the software industry who also consider these reports to be invaluable. So this month, we've posted the software results online alongside the hardware information. There's some pretty interesting information in there, and there's more on the way as we continue to refine our data queries. Have a look and let us know what you think.

Steam client update released

A Steam client update is now available. To apply the update, click the File menu inside of Steam and then select "Check for Steam Client Updates...". The specific changes include:

New Features
  • Updated friends chats to use new tabbed chat interface (see Friends tab in the Settings dialog to turn off opening in new tabs by default)
  • Updated in-game overlay browser to use new tabbed browsing interface (Use Middle click on links to open-in-new-tab)
  • Tabbed Browser/Chat HotKeys: Ctrl-Tab and Ctrl-Shift-Tab to switch tabs. Ctrl-W, Ctrl-F4 or Middle click to close tabs.
  • Updated WebKit code for client/in-game browser (improved stability and performance on OSX, various browser fixes)
  • Windows: 64 bit build of the in-game overlay (useable now with any 64bit non-Steam game you may add)
  • Windows: 64 bit builds of Steamworks DLLs (for upcoming titles)

Fixes
  • New non-blocking game uninstall dialog
  • Improved client shutdown times
  • Fix some cases of Steam becoming unresponsive for 5-10 seconds when new game updates are released
  • Fixed unused game tags still showing up
  • Reinstalling from a goldmaster triggers a content verification if the game is already installed
  • Fixed sometimes needing to restart Steam after installing PhysX
  • Changed overlay hot-key detection to not consider ctrl-shift-tab to be the same as shift-tab, thus allowing its use in tabbed chat/browsing in-game
  • Fixed “hidden” achievements showing up in the game details page and overlay “so close…” ui
  • Fixed a crash on shutdown
  • Fixed an issue with input tab ordering in group chats
  • Increased timeouts on Steam Cloud file uploads
  • Fixed Rabobank payment page for iDEAL checkout not showing correctly in the Steam Client
  • Fixed a bug parsing certain HTML tags inside News bodies
  • Fixed top half of avatar images in chats not being right clickable for context menu
  • Fixed a potential crash when failing to parse new stats/achievements data for a game
  • Fixed bug/exploit with malformed www. URLs in chats
  • Windows: Fixed the “alt” key sometimes sticking in the in-game overlay after an alt-tab event
  • Windows: Improved overlay compatibility with some previously conflicting third party applications
  • Windows: Fixes to progress bar on win7 task icon in handling paused downloads as well as finished downloads
  • OSX: Fix several memory leaks
  • OSX: Fix copy/paste resulting in extra random string data
