Legend has it that the sea witch Cylostra Direfin was once the favourite court singer of the Bretonnian king.

Sent on a voyage across the ocean to sing for the Phoenix King, they were hit by a fierce storm. The madame’s notes turned to screams of fury as the ship sank, and all onboard drowned.

Decades later, a Bretonnian galleon of rotten wood and tattered sails can be seen navigating the seas even in the most savage of storms. It is The Lamprey, the ship of the vengeful spirit Madame Cylostra and her crew, the Drowned.

Queen of the Tides, Aranessa Saltspite is one of the most respected and feared pirate captains of Sartosa. Some say she is the daughter of the sea god Manann himself and he whispers to her to take control of all the world’s oceans.

Now, many a sea-bloated corpse washes up against the Swordfysh’s hull, and so the Vampire first mates breathe unlife into them, creating a vast rabble of loyal crew, ready to serve at Captain Saltspite’s command.

As part of the living realm rather than the undead, she commands a human pirate crew known as the Sartosa Free Company, otherwise reluctantly sharing control of the denizens of the Vampire Coast.

Count Noctilus was drawn to the maelstrom at the heart of the ocean to feast upon its dark magic. He performed a mighty ritual to transport himself, his castle, and all his undead minions to the Galleon’s Graveyard, a mystical place where the wrecks and hulks of the seas are drawn.

Reborn as Count Noctilus, he raised the shattered remains of sunken warships to form the hull of the Bloody Reaver and ride the waves of the mortal seas once more…

For centuries, Luthor Harkon has ruled a stretch of Lustrian shore known as the Vampire Coast.

He raided the temples of Lustria until the Old Ones could tolerate it no more and placed a hex upon him, shattering his mind. Harkon's multiple identities now battle for dominance, but they have one common goal - to plunder the sacred places of the Lizardmen and use the power of their Slann artefacts to break the curse and heal his damaged mind...

Total War: WARHAMMER - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

The next expansion to Total War: Warhammer 2 is to set our spines and timbers shivering alike, as it will add the undead pirates of the Vampire Coast. Creative Assembly today announced Curse Of The Vampire Coast, due to launch on November 8th. It’ll add the damned pirates of that cursed coast, who are all fighting to gain control of a giant terrible sea monster. I’m interested. Apparently their quests include finding pirate treasure and learning a magical shanty. I’m very interested. And one of their units is… some kind of mech built from shipwrecks and piloted by a ball of drowned corpses? Oh I am IN.

Total War: WARHAMMER II

Do you want to be the ghost ship materialising out of the fog with a load of gruesome, rotting zombies on board? What a stupid question. Yes, obviously.

That's what's coming in Curse of the Vampire Coast, a new mini-expansion for Total War: Warhammer 2. It's due 8th November, not quite in time for Halloween, and costs 14 (it's discounted to 12.59 currently).

The win condition for the new campaign, and for the four new Legendary Lords, is to grow infamy and become the most dreaded pirate captain on the sea. You do this by winning battles and establishing Pirate Coves, a new thing. They let you - instead of taking, sacking or razing ports - build a sneaky sub-settlement nearby, which siphons off income plus any other benefits you've unlocked upgrading your Cove.

Update: the title of this article incorrectly originally said the DLC was launching next week, next month, which we've since corrected. Sorry about that.

Total War: Warhammer 2 is getting another DLC pack next week, the pirate-themed Curse of the Vampire Coast. Check out the cinematic trailer for it above.

Curse of the Vampire Coast features four undead pirate Legendary Lords, units like gun-wielding deckhands and a themed campaign to enjoy. Oh, and big enemy crabs. You'll see those towards the end of the trailer above, and they must rank as some of the oddest Total War enemy types ever. The sea has very much gone wrong in Curse of the Vampire coast. Luthor Harkon is the first of the Legendary Lords to be revealed, with the rest presumably being discussed later.

The DLC releases on November 8. It's already up for pre-order on Steam, at a regular price of $19/£14, but with a 10 per cent pre-launch discount. Here's Creative Assembly's blurb on the background to the DLC, which is all deeply Warhammer:

"The erratic power of the Great Vortex has awoken Amanar, a vast and ancient Merwyrm. It terrorises the Vampire Coast, attacking ports on a whim and summoning colossal sea-storms in its wake. Each of the Legendary Lords seeks not to harness the power of the Vortex, but to locate and empower the fabled Star-Metal Harpoon—the only weapon capable of bending the beast to their will, and securing their reputation as the most infamous pirate lord on the high seas!"

A free update will bring major revisions to the Vampire Counts, too, according to a Creative Assembly FAQ. A new Legendary Lord will also be completely free to all players, if you're not big on buying DLC.

We gave Total War: Warhammer 2 our Best Strategy Game award in 2017. "Warhammer 2 sorts out one of the biggest problems in the original, in that its campaign was a real slog near the tail end," said young Steven Messner. "By comparison, the struggle to control the Vortex is thrilling in its final moments, as each faction races to complete the final rituals and enter a climatic final battle."

Total War: Warhammer 3 is currently in pre-production as Creative Assembly work on finishing Total War: Three Kingdoms for March 6 2019. Here are a few features we'd like to see in the sequel.
