PC Gamer

Hyper Universe is a side-scrolling action game that was presumably orphaned at birth and raised by a pack of MOBAs. At least, that would explain its MOBA trappings. It has minions to last-hit, towers and lanes to defend, and items and skills to upgrade. But it is still a 2D action game, so the usual left, middle and right lanes have become five vertically stacked lanes. It’s a fun mashup that makes for fast fights and short games, but Hyper Universe’s fewer dimensions also significantly limit its replayability and strategic depth.

Intrigued by its heritage, I dive in and promptly run into an endless loading screen. Off to a flying start, aren’t we? But then, that’s tradition for Early Access games. I manage to sort that out and start the game proper, and I’m treated to a gorgeous anime intro. In fact, all of Hyper Universe is pretty. Heroes (or Hypers) are stylish, with smooth animations. I tear through the prologue’s enemies as Allen, a boy wonder with a sword in one hand and lightning in the other.

The genre combination is novel.

By default, you move with the arrow keys and use abilities with Q through R and A through F, which is pretty awkward. I plug in my gamepad and things start to click. I’ve got my basic attack, special attack, dodge and jump on the face buttons, and my skills on the bumpers and triggers. Allen is a melee hero, so I get close, hold down my basic attack and weave in uppercuts and long-reaching sweeps as my cooldowns allow.

Combat is more frenetic than a standard MOBA, but compared to 2D action games like Dust: An Elysian Tail and Valdis Story: Abyssal City, Hyper Universe is very simple. This isn't a fighting game. There are no jump attacks, aerial combos, grabs or other such staples, so combos begin and end with a handful of abilities. Still, the genre combination is novel and it's fun learning which skills lead into others.

Things pick up once I clear the prologue and gain access to the training room, where I sample all 28 heroes. There are six classes to choose from: tanks, bruisers, specialists, strikers, assassins and supports. But even after testing every one, I still can’t tell the classes apart. Some have more utility than others, but they each play like an offensive, damage-dealing character. It made me miss the diversity of a game like Heroes of the Storm but, but the focus on fighting does suit Hyper Universe’s breakneck pace.

Super button-mash bros.

The only meaningful distinction between heroes is whether they’re ranged- or melee-focused, but that’s not to say they all run together. Louis, for example, excels at controlling the space between him and his opponent. He’s a boxer who can charge forward and finish with a powerful right hook, or quickly retreat backward and follow up with a straight left punch. Louis plays very differently to Sun Wukong, a melee hero who focuses on trapping opponents in place and stacking up damage. The same is true of ranged heroes like Blue Rose and Celine. Both of their basic attacks involve plinking away from a distance, but where Celine’s abilities offer long, piercing shots, Blue Rose dishes out more damage the closer she is to enemies.

Before I head to matchmaking, I want to put together a custom item set, because defaults are for sissies. You can bring six different items into a game, then unlock and upgrade them as you earn gold. They’re mostly passive stat buffs, but some provide active abilities like a temporary shield. The trouble is, every hero comes with a set of four items that significantly buff their skills when fully upgraded. These outclass virtually all vanilla items, meaning I really only have two slots to play with. There’s also a lack of cheap early-game items, so I just slap something together.

Right, time for a real game. Unlike most MOBAs, Hyper Universe is 4v4. Like most MOBAs, it has one map. Its vertically stacked lanes are relatively small, but also filled with elements to keep track of. There are buff-giving minions on lanes one and five, and two towers for each team on lanes two and four. So, including the ‘core’ tower, each team has five towers. Once a lane’s towers are destroyed, minions will march through and converge on the middle lane, three, to assault the core.

The map is also peppered with jump pads, ladders, drop panels and teleporters that make getting around more dynamic. Dropping through a panel to the lane below gives you a movement buff, and if you catch an enemy climbing up a ladder, you can shake the ladder to knock them off. Small mechanics like these liven up lanes and make up for the lack of a jungle. I wind up in some tight escapes and exciting chases, which I never expected going in. MOBAs are hugely dependent on map awareness, so I thought Hyper Universe might be too shallow, but it makes good use of its two dimensions.

But it isn’t without its stretch marks. For one, team fights are illegible maelstroms of particle effects, health bars, and cooldowns. Whenever there are four or more heroes on-screen, I can’t even keep track of my own hero, let alone enemies. Also, I’m pretty sure ranged heroes are irreparably OP. Due to the nature of the 2D map, they don’t have to aim attacks and are guaranteed to hit anything they’re facing, so it’s difficult for melee heroes to close the gap without becoming pin cushions. Oppositely, support heroes are incredibly situational since combat is so quick. Any skill that doesn’t kill dudes isn’t worth using, and boring besides.

That said, I had fun with Hyper Universe. By removing a strategic and literal dimension, it’s taken the idea of an action MOBA to a new extreme. That extreme comes with a few intrinsic flaws, but the newness feels worth it. I might even come back before it leaves Early Access, queue a ranger and ruin some melee heroes.

Welcome Arslan, the newest melee Bruiser to join Hyper Universe. Arslan is a fierce Lion warrior that has a strong mix of mobility and disruptive skills. He can launch ambushes or retreat from bad situations in a moment’s notice, all the while growing stronger as his health is reduced.

With the latest patch, Arslan, his recolor skin, and unique equipment will be introduced to the game.

Skill Overview:
Tenderizer
Arslan’s “A“ ability is Tenderizer. Arslan will strike, then bite the enemy, dealing damage while lowering their defense and bolstering his.

Pounce
His “Q“ skill is Pounce. Arslan will leap high in the air, dealing damage and knocking down any enemy Hypers that he hits on landing.

Battle Roar
Arslan’s “W“ let’s out a mighty Battle Roar that will inflict damage to enemy Hypers around him while reducing their speed and attack damage. The lower the enemy’s health, the greater effect.

Whirling Blades
Pressing “E” will activate Arslan’s Whirling Blades, sending him into a quick spiral that will deal damage to nearby Hypers and give himself a speed boost while allowing him to ignore movement restricting effects.

Primal Fury
Finally, Arslan’s ultimate skill is Primal Fury. Primal Fury will make Arslan charge forward, wildly swinging his weapons dealing damage while causing a short stun. Each hit will knockback enemy Hypers that are caught in the charge.

Using Arslan’s Skills Effectively:
Arslan specializes in ambushing and catching enemies off guard. His Pounce has a long range, allowing him to set up fights for his team, and pick off wandering Hypers easily. Pounce combined with his ultimate, Primal Fury, can potentially push an entire enemy team out of position and exactly to where you want them. If the enemy tries to scatter or run away, you can use Battle Roar to slow them down, and Whirling Blades to chase them.

Recommended build:
Demonic Spellbook, Dragonscale Breastplate, Frostedge, Eternal Ice Crystal, Exo-Frame, Devil’s Jack

Since Arslan dives into the enemy’s backline, a more defensive build may benefit you. Items like Frostedge, Demonic Spellbook, and Exo-Frame can come together to make Arslan a Hyper who is hard to stand toe to toe with. These items really focus on Arslan’s health and defense. The build order of these items should be from left to right, fully building one item before moving to the next. However, this build can be a little tricky for newer players as it relies on Arslan not dying to maximize the potential of the Demonic Spellbook’s stacking power. Not sure what to build? As always, you can hop into our Discord to discuss itemization with other players.

You can hop into the battlefield with Arslan tomorrow for a mere 15,000GP, which you can earn by leveling up and playing games.

May your blades stay sharpened, and good luck out there. Remember: Only the strong survive!

Today we are bringing you intel about a new battlefield that you can warp to starting with tomorrow's update on September 7th! This new map, Dragon Refuge, is rich in fantasy-themed content with seven lanes to explore. Unlike Delta Station, which has two siege lanes, Dragon Refuge has a single siege lane with six layers of jungle to explore, making Dragon Refuge a hunting ground of resources to collect and dominate.

Each layer of Dragon Refuge’s hunting grounds brings a plethora of new mobs to fight, from magic wielding goblins to knife wielding tortoises, you will find different foes lurking about. With things such as centrally located camps with big benefits, controlling the jungle will be a huge factor in claiming victory over your opponents.

Dragon’s Refuge has two new unique bosses to conquer; the Executioner who hides beneath, and the almighty Dragon that slumbers at the peak. The Executioner will drop a chest of gold upon his death, as well as his mace that will grant you extra strength in battle.

If you manage to defeat the ancient Dragon, his hoarded gold will be distributed among your allies, along with a most valuable core that will spawn Siege Tanks for your team, and the Dragon’s Heart buff which will grant the Hyper who picks it up additional benefits that branch out to nearby allied Hypers.

These treasures will be hotly contested by both sides looking to gain the advantage.

Stick together, control the jungle, and fight your way past the enemy’s defenses to ultimately take control of Dragon Refuge. Good luck in your adventures, Hypers!

Hello Hypers!

We have been receiving a lot of your feedback concerning how you feel about having to play against AIs until you reach level 6.  Many of you have also felt frustrated that you cannot choose whether you want to play against other players and have felt forced having to play against AIs.

We know that this has to change, but we will need time to discuss and review the type of changes that are needed.  In order to help newcomers in Hyper Universe, we will be hosting a leveling event that will help you reach level 6 faster.

Event Period:
  • Pacific Time: Aug. 25, 2017 7:00 PM – Aug. 28, 2017 10:00 AM
  • Eastern Time: Aug. 25, 2017 10:00 PM – Aug. 28, 2017 1:00 PM
  • UTC: Aug. 26, 2017 2:00 AM – Aug. 28, 2017 5:00 PM
Event Details:
  • 100% increase in Experience points
To review what this is in reference to, please see an excerpt from our Early Access Patch Notes below.

New User Experience - Levels 1 through 5 Changes

New players level 1 through 5 is recommended to run AI Match - Beginner mode to learn the core concepts of the battle.

AI Matches - Beginner and Veteran mode
  • If there are no matches found within a certain period of time, AIs will queue up with you in the Ally team.  They will have randomized names.
  • AI Match - Beginner difficulties are set to Beginner, Adept, or Veteran depending on the players' ratings.
  • AI Match - Veteran can be unlocked at level 6.  The AI's difficulty is set to Elite.
There's many reasons why a player wants to play an AI Match.  Of all the reasons, there's one thing we're certain of.  They're not ready to join a Regular Match yet.  There were issues where players couldn't find a match fast enough when they only want to play against AIs.  As a result, we decided to change this experience so they can play without having to wait too long.

Regular Match
  • Players level 5 or under can queue for a Regular Match.  If there are no matches found within a certain period of time, they will automatically be queued to an AI match instead.
  • When a player reaches level 6, they will no longer switched to an AI match when queuing for a Regular Match.
  • If a player level 5 or under is partied with a player above level 6, they will not be switched to an AI match.
This feature was added because we had players entering Regular Matches when they weren't ready to.  There are some unique aspects to Hyper Universe that players needs to learn.  It isn't a good experience when a new player comes in and gets annihilated by a group of more experienced players.
