Foxhole - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

Foxhole [official site], a massively multiplayer sandbox war where players act like units in an RTS, has invaded Steam Early Access. A war has raged for yonks, see, and now hundreds of players play every part from building bases and running supplies to, you know, fighting. After a stretch in open pre-alpha (which I downloaded but didn’t play because Plunkbat happened), Foxhole has now officially launched into paid early access. A bit like PlanetSide 2, World War 2 Online, and other persistent wars, it’s all one big throwdown across many fronts with grand schemes and grander failures. I hear good things from chums who are more resistant to Plunkbat’s siren call. (more…)

Foxhole 0.0.33 Update Released! Rifle Grenade Launcher and Fisherman's Row Skirmish Map!

Rifle Grenade Launcher

The Rifle Grenade Launcher is inspired by the M1 Grenade Projection Adapter, which was able to load and launch regular hand grenades. In Foxhole, the Rifle Grenade Launcher will be an accessory that can be equipped to Rifles. Once equipped, the Rifle can be switched to fire Grenades by toggling it's Fire Mode via a key press. Grenades thrown with this accessory can reach distances further than those thrown by hand. Initially, the Rifle Grenade Launcher will be compatible with Frag Grenades, but were exploring the idea of allowing it to be used with other grenade types like Smoke and Green Ash.

Fisherman's Row

We are introducing the first ever 60 player "skirmish" style map to Foxhole. This map will be designed for faster paced gameplay that will be appropriate for new players and veterans that are interested in training exercises or smaller skirmishes. Fisherman's Row is an island off the West coast of the old Warden Empire and features beaches, farm lands, and hilly areas.

There are other gameplay changes, improvements, and bug fixes in this update. I highly suggest reading the full release notes HERE.

Construction Vehicle

The Construction Vehicle is now required to build large structures in the game like Town Halls, Outposts, Weapon Factories, and more. It requires two players to operate, one driver and one operator. It builds 40% faster than Hammers. The Construction Vehicle is slow moving, easy to disable, but hard to destroy. While it is currently limited to building a few specific structures, we hope to expand it's capabilities in the future.

Gun Nest

The Gun Nest isn't technically a new structure, but is an upgrade of the Foxhole. One of our goals with Gun Nests is to allow players to further fortify an area in the mid to late game without having to add clutter/Foxhole spam to their already crowded bases. We also wanted to extend the structure upgrade system beyond just walls. The Gun Nest will not only have a faster rate of gun fire than the Foxhole, but it will also lob Frag Grenades at enemies.

There a ton of other gameplay changes and improvements in this update. I highly suggest reading the full release notes HERE.

Sunken Pillbox

The Sunken Pillbox is a new defensive structure that will help with defending towns against long ranged weapons. Inspired by the Retractable Turrets used in the Maginot Line, this fortification will retract into the ground when there aren't any targets in sight. When enemies are inside it's forward facing firing arc, it will slowly rise and open fire. In it's retracted state, the Sunken Pillbox will be near invulnerable.

The Sunken Pillbox was designed to help players secure their towns against long ranged weapons used by small groups of raiders or during low population situations. However, it's slow startup time makes it essential to complement it with other defensive structures.

Tunnel Network

Inspired heavily by the vast underground structures built for the Maginot Line in World War 2, players will need to build out networks of tunnels to supply their passive defense structures like Pillboxes and Foxholes. Players will build Tunnel Network structures in the form of concrete hatches, which will automatically connect to nearby structures. Networks must be connected to Town Halls or Outposts to work. Only connected passive defenses will have an active AI. This new mechanic will decrease the significance of early game rushes and will enable more organic front lines to form.

Sulfur Resource

This is a new resource that is used to produce the more powerful explosive weapons in the game. Sulfur is a depletable, rare resource available in contested areas away from towns. Players will initially gather Sulfur in relatively secure areas, but once those nearby nodes are depleted they will have to venture out to the front line or beyond for more. Sulfur is refined into Explosive Material at the Manufacturing Plant.

There are LOT of gameplay changes in this update. I highly suggest reading the full release notes HERE.
