Team Fortress 2

It sounds like the start of a joke. "The Heavy from TF2 and Tycho from Penny Arcade walk into a bar...", but that's pretty much the premise for Telltale's upcoming poker game, which pits an odd variety of gaming characters against one another and gives the player a chance to win some exclusive items for TF2. Telltale have released a trailer of the game, showing some of the banter we can expect from the motley crew they've assembled. They've given Tycho a voice! Hear his sultry tones in the video below.

The trailer teaches us that the Heavy is as serious about cards as he is about his beloved miniguns. Head here more information on the TF2 items that will be wagered. The game will be out later this month, and is available to pre-order now on Steam.

This coming Tuesday November 9th, 2010 the TF2 item system will be down for maintenance starting at 1pm PST and ending at approximately 2:30PST. We are significantly increasing the amount of database horsepower behind TF2 to accommodate all the recent additions to the system. During this maintenance the following TF2 features will be unavailable:

 • Backpacks
 • Crafting
 • Trading
 • The MannCo store
 • Loadouts

The game itself will continue to work. All players will have their default appearance and weapons.

To keep abreast of the status of this and future TF2 item maintenance, subscribe to this thread in the TF2 forum.

Note to developers using the TF2 Item Web API: As part of this maintenance all item IDs will change to eliminate negative IDs. We will be shifting all item IDs forward by 2100000. Depending on what data you store in your database, you may need to do the same.

Telltale Games' crazy crossover card game features three characters with established voices - Team Fortress 2's Heavy, Strong Bad, and Max. But what does Penny Arcade's Tycho sound like? This trailer has the answer.

Poker Night At The Inventory is due out for PC and Mac this month.

Team Fortress 2

Poker Night at the Inventory is a poker game that pits the Heavy from TF2 against Penny Arcade's Tycho, Max from Sam & Max and Strong Bad from, well the Strong Bad games. As you win hands, you'll be able to unlock a series of exclusive items in Team Fortress 2. Read on for details of the new weapons and accessories on offer.

At various points, special rounds will commence in which characters will throw the special items into the pot, and you'll have to use all your wiles to win them and unlock the item. Here's a list of the items on offer:

"The Iron Curtain" weapon, for use by the Heavy in TF2.

Max's Lugermorph handgun for use by the Scout and the Engineer in TF2; and Max's Freelance Police badge wearable by any player in TF2.

Wrist watch from Penny Arcade's Tycho for the Spy in TF2.

Styling "Dangeresque" sunglasses anted in by Strong Bad, wearable by Demoman in TF2.

Preordering the game on Steam also unlocks a poker visor hat for the Heavy. The game will be out later this month, priced at $4.95, which probably works out cheaper than buying four items at the Mann Co store. Here are a few images of the items floating in a red haze. The Heavy's minigun looks particularly neat.

This is pretty exciting to us - it's the first time a game made by someone other than us allows you to find TF2 items by playing it. If you'd asked us, as we slaved away on TF2 back in '63, whether one day you'd be able to get the Heavy's first minigun off him by playing poker, we'd think you were nuts. Then we'd have hired you, because you had a vision for the future.

If you're curious, here's the set of items that you'll be able to collect inside Poker Night at the Inventory:

The Enthusiast's Timepiece - Tycho's favorite timepiece (equippable by the Spy)

License to Maim - Max's Badge (equippable by all classes)

The Lugermorph - A second chance at Max's personal armament (equippable by the Scout and the Engineer)

The Iron Curtain - The Heavy's first love (equippable by the Heavy, obviously)

Dangeresque, Too? - Strong Bad's styling glasses (equippable by the Demoman)

How Valve Will Bribe Team Fortress 2 Players Into Playing Poker [Update]Later this month, Telltale Games—makers of Sam & Max and Penny Arcade video games—will release a new poker title featuring, among others, Team Fortress 2's Heavy. That's not the only incentive luring TF2 fans to do some gambling.

To help promote Telltale's Poker Night at the Inventory, Valve is adding a few more items to the increasingly long list of equippable Team Fortress 2 goodies, including a new wristwatch for the Spy (The Enthusiast's Timepiece), Strong Bad's "styling" glasses (for the Demoman) and something known as the Lugermorph for the Scout and Engineer.

Of course, there's also a new visor and the Iron Curtain, a new mini-gun, for the Heavy. All are available to owners of Poker Night at the Inventory as unlockable items, but only the visor will be available to those who pre-order.

"Poker Night at the Inventory includes special rounds periodically where characters will buy in with un-lockable Team Fortress 2 items," Telltale explains. "If the player wins the round, the item becomes theirs to use in TF2."

Considering the price of some of those Mann Co. items in Team Fortress 2, five bucks now looks like a steal. You win, Valve.

Update: Telltale provided images of all the unlockables. We've also corrected the specifics surrounding the availability of items in Poker Night.
