Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem - calistaen
Hello everyone!

It’s time to face the Wrath of Sarisel! You can read the Changelog for this Content Patch here. Please restart your Steam client to download the update.

Wrath of Sarisel brings 5 new skills and their modifiers, area modifiers, Altars, and the Sarisel challenge. With this, new affixes have been added in the game, and you will now be able to trade items, gold, and primordial affinity! Animation cancel is also back, and the gameplay feeling is now much smoother thanks to it.

Some known bugs are being worked on and will be fixed as soon as possible, we already plan to make a hotfix tomorrow. Our priority will be to fix:

- Some spells sometimes stop dealing damage (more frequently affecting Annihilation)
- Sometimes channeled skills cast stays stuck until the resource bar is emptied
- Crashes can occur during the campaign

The bug tracker has been reset and will be filled progressively with the latest reports.

Here are now a few explanations on how to access the new features from the Expeditions.

You can now improve your Expedition maps in the Soldier of Fortune game mode with area modifiers, just talk to Alexander Ivakin to open the Expedition window.

Select your difficulty first and then choose “Roll Area modifiers”. Purchasing an area modifier requires gold.

You can choose between 3 different modifiers and select the one you wish to add to your Expedition. The more you add, the better the chance you’ll have to get more items with higher quality.

You can add up to 5 modifiers on a map.

When you reach 4 modifiers, a new option becomes available on the Area modifiers window:

You can lure untainted using Primordial Affinity. This will increase the difficulty of your Expedition by adding Untainted Halfbreeds in the modified area, activating the Wrath of Sarisel challenge. This challenge implies that you will have no loot at all during the expedition, only awesome rewards at the end of it if you finish it.

It will also increase the Magic Find and Item Quantity from your dungeon substantially.

Stay focused, always watch your back, never leave your teammates alone, help them when they need it, and you might survive the Wrath!

Have fun, plenty of loots, and don’t hesitate to share your feedback!

  • Character chests have been wiped.
  • Items in your character inventory will be rerolled to include all the new affixes.

  • Added area modifiers: you can now add area modifiers to Alexander Ivakin’s Expedition area, which will increase difficulty and rewards.

    - Cursed chest that gives loot after defeating enemies.
  • The balancing has been completely reviewed.

  • The Gate of Fates has a new, cleaner look.
  • In order to teleport on another character, you can use right-click on his portrait and select “Teleport to” or left click on his portrait

  • The aggro system has been added: all kinds of attacks are taken into account but some skills generate more threat than others. The distance is also taken into account: if you're far from the creatures, you'll have less chance to attract its attention compared to someone who is close to the creature.
  • Rage generation on hit is now included in weapons attributes, and is not a character attribute anymore.

Hello everyone!

The Wrath of Sarisel release is getting closer, and it’s now time to share with you some of the new rewards that you’ll be able to get with this coming patch. But first...

Personal chest wipe
We would like to inform you that a personal chest wipe is going to be done when Wrath of Sarisel is launched in order to permanently resolve a technical issue. We’ve also brought a lot of changes and improvements to affixes on the current items, leading them to be deprecated, but...

If you want to keep your high level items, gems, or enneracts, you can put them in your inventory or in secondary characters inventories. The item affixes will be rerolled when you’ll enter the game, so you might end up with something incredibly awesome, or something worse, but you’ll keep them. In addition to this, all passive and active skill points will be reset, as well as the attributes.

We know that it’s not ideal, but it’s the best solution we could find to avoid a complete wipe and allow you to jump right in the new challenges that will be available through Area alterations and Wrath of Sarisel.

Finally, we would also like to remind you that a complete character/chest wipe will be done for the release of the game in January 2020, so everyone can have a fresh start. We know that some of you are worried about that and we prefer to warn you again before, so there is no unpleasant surprise for you.

Yes, Trading will also be available with Wrath of Sarisel! You will be able to trade gold, Primordial Affinity and, of course, items of every shape and size. You need to be close to the person you wish to trade with to open a trade window.

There are two steps of validation to ensure safe transactions; if anything is changed in either player’s trade offer, the validation is canceled.

With Wrath of Sarisel we’re introducing more affixes on items, including “local affixes” which will affect protection or damage values on the designated item instead of affecting the global values on the character. When such an affix is present, the value affected is automatically updated with the bonus. We’ve also worked on item tooltips to improve clarity and we hope that you will appreciate it!

Bear in mind that the balancing is subject to change before the release of the patch.

There are still 5/12 other uniques for you to discover when Wrath of Sarisel goes live, which should be quite soon now!

Thank you for your support!

Hello everyone!

It is now time to introduce the Expedition improvements brought by the Wrath of Sarisel Content Patch. As we explained in a previous update, the Sarisel challenges are principally focused on Multiplayer cooperation and will require strategy. We wanted it to be available for solo players too, but the main focus of this feature is to experiment with advanced Cooperative content in the universe of Wolcen, using AI technology inspired by survival games.

Wrath of Sarisel is an ambitious experiment and we want it to be an awesome cooperative experience. We will be very interested in your feedback to improve it for the release of the game in January 2020.

To access the Wrath of Sarisel challenge, you will need to add several area alterations to an Expedition. Each one will add more difficulty and, of course, increase the chance of epic rewards at the end of the challenge.

Once you launch an altered dungeon and activate Wrath of Sarisel, you and your party will enter a randomly generated area with the selected alterations. In there, you’ll have a chance to be attacked by Sarisel’s half breeds along the way, appearing when you least expect it. Once engaged in this specific challenge, unlike for other Expeditions(even modified by an area alteration), you won’t have any loot until you complete the dungeon.
Finally, like in any other Expedition, there is no way to retreat and teleport back to town.

The half breeds you’ll meet there have complex attack patterns, and their damage are also based on your lowest Resistance score, which makes them quite fearsome opponents. You will need strategy and fast reflexes to defeat them.

Choosing an area alteration will always increase the chance of finding better loot. However, it will also make the dungeon harder to complete.
We’ve shared an example of an area alteration in the Gamescom video.

In this situation, the alteration regularly affects all players with a time bomb, triggering an explosion after a few moments. Of course, you have to make sure that you won’t explode your whole party or jump on a friend who’s about to explode at risk of taking colossal damage.

Here are a few examples of additional alterations you’ll be able to apply to an area:
  • Enemies have X% chance to explode after X seconds on kill
  • Enemies have a chance to spawn X underlings from their family on kill
  • Lieutenant and Elite enemies have 1 additional Boss modifier
  • Enemies have X% chance to inflict one type of stacking ailment
  • And more...

When a party member is killed, the creature who gave the last hit becomes a Nemesis for the entire group. This implies several things:
  • The creature’s Health is fully regenerated and all ailments affecting it are cleansed.
  • The creature gets stronger and it is granted an additional Boss Modifier for each player killed.
  • You can’t revive the player who was killed by the Nemesis as long as the Nemesis stands.

Completing a Sarisel dungeon leads you to a victory screen full of information. Depending on your efficiency, you will receive a team rank, and this rank will affect the quality of the rewards you will receive. This is still a work in progress but here is a first version of the Sarisel Victory screen.

Ranks will depend on several factors linked to your party performance and your own. The victory screen will also allow you to see your overall performance during the dungeon.

Finishing a Sarisel dungeon will grant you Experience, Gold, Primordial Affinity, and most importantly, awesome items with unique affixes only available in this challenge for the moment. Later, these affixes will also be available for solo content, through crafting or other ways, but currently we want to encourage players to play this mode if they want to obtain them.

Also, in order to allow players to make the fastest dungeon, you won’t have loot during your exploration, but you will be rewarded twice at the end: once with a chest, and once more after the dungeon with the Victory screen.

Depending on the difficulty of the dungeon and the rank achieved, the Victory screen can add up to 5 rewards. Here are two examples of rewards that you can have in these dungeons, just keep in mind that the values are not final yet:

We hope that you are as excited as we are regarding this new challenge mode. The Wrath of Sarisel Content Patch is planned for late September/early October, just a few weeks away!

Thank you for your support!

Hello everyone!

Wolcen Studio went to Gamescom this year to talk about the future of the game, and we were really happy to see a lot of journalists interested in Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem.
We’ve introduced them to the Wrath of Sarisel Content Patch, and gave some information about the release date and its content.

We’re glad to be able to share this information with you now.

We’ve already explained a bit the idea behind this feature in this news. Wrath of Sarisel will introduce a challenging mode requiring cooperation and coordination to face and destroy Sarisel’s half breed sent after you. There will be a more detailed announcement to explain this feature since there is a lot of details to cover, but you’ll get the idea of the type of content you will have in this video. Some of the future act 2 environments were used as well, so you’ll also have a sneak peek on future areas, and on another Apocalyptic form in action! The Apocalyptic forms will also be the object of a future announcement, where we will introduce all of them and their dedicated skills.

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FdEMGMxtco

Wrath of Sarisel Content Patch will be available in late September/early October.

After Wrath of Sarisel and its debug phase including several hotfixes, the team will focus entirely on the release of the game. There is still work to do, but not having to divide our forces on an additional patch will allow us to go faster than the last few months.

This will lead Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem’s release date to January 2020.

The release content will include:

  • 3 Acts of an epic and immersive campaign that will continue for years
  • A new endgame storyline, tied to the campaign
  • Multiplayer and cooperative content
  • Character level up to 90
  • 21 archetypes in the Gate of Fates
  • 40 skills(including summoning skills!) with 12 to 16 modifiers per skill
  • 4 Apocalyptic forms with their dedicated skills and attacks
  • Crafting
  • Pets
  • Character customization including the female character
  • 10 tiers of armors, special armors, and very cool uniques
  • Armor skin transfer and tinting
  • Customizable game rules thanks to area alterations
  • Secondary/optional content

But that’s not all! Wolcen’s development won’t end with the release of the game, it will be the beginning of a long story of additional free content, new Acts, new items, new and returning features that will enrich the game and continuously provide new challenges and activities for players.

We’re really excited about the next few months and the arrival of the release. Of course, we will keep you informed about all these announced features, so you can learn a bit more about this awesome content as we move towards the release of the game.

Thank you for your continuous support!

Hello everyone!

This week we’re happy to introduce you to a few new unique concepts planned for Wrath of Sarisel Content Patch, as well as presenting you the Shrines.

12 new uniques are planned for the next patch, let’s start with these three!

Stormfall Navy’s best, have your own pocket radiant turret! This pistol allows you to launch Thunderstrike when you deal critical damage, although some of this damage will also affect your character.

We’re adding a heavy armor linked to the Fallen Etheliel, the Lady of Vanity. It is meant to have an impact on Frost, increasing the duration of the Frozen effect on your character and enemies alike. Additionally, it will allow you to transfer all Dodge score into All Resistance score.

This will add value and flexibility to the Agility stat and will allow for some other interesting combos.

Time to feel like a sky pirate! This rogue helmet will allow your projectile damage modifications to impact your melee damage as well. This opens new build possibilities with pistols and one-handed weapons.

Shrines will be the first iteration of the Altars family feature. We want the Altars to allow various interactions leading to many types of different results or modifications to your adventure.

The Shrines are the most simple ones. Once you activate them, a group of monsters are spawned and benefit from a buff such as additional damage, move speed, etc. You have to destroy this group of monster to earn this buff for yourself.

As always, thank you for your support!

Hello everyone!

This week, we would like to share some information on the Game Design objectives and changes planned for the next Content Patch, as well as the global idea we have for the release. We feel it’s important to share these goals with you and how we feel about some of the features, so you can have a better understanding of our vision for the game.

So, we’ve gathered a few points in the form of questions that were addressed to the Design team based on your feedback, and here are their answers:

Is the Design team satisfied by the feedback and results from the last Content Patch in terms of encounters, balancing and build diversity?

We know that there is still work to do, but we’re currently satisfied with the base of what we have implemented so far and we’re now focused on improving the experience.
We’ve also worked on a lot of bugs preventing the balancing to work as intended. We have now fixed them, so things will absolutely run smoother with Wrath of Sarisel.

There are plans to improve the gearing system. With the next patch we’ll be adding local affixes, effects that apply to the item they’re currently on, for instance, a 5% Health bonus would be applied to the item Health bonus, not roughly on the player’s health. This will add more diversity to items in the long run and it was something that we planned to do for a long time.

We also have intentions to add implicit values to armors and weapons, and we hope to implement them for the next Content Patch as well, to give a bit more identity to the various gears available.

After Wrath of Sarisel, we're planning to work on more ways to override the skill limitation system, allowing new types of builds and gameplay. New affixes will appear, allowing you to use other spells while using melee weapons. Other affixes will bring more variety and a bit of “craziness” in itemization, we'll tell you more about this in a future announcement.

Finally, staves are being reworked too, to bring back some highly appreciated feeling from the Alpha.

What are the current guidelines regarding the balancing of Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem?

These are our current goals in terms of balancing:
  • Avoid sharp peaks of difficulty and make the progression more linear.
  • Make sure that the straight-forward archetypes are equally interesting.
  • Make sure that hybrid builds are viable. Although we know that we won’t be able to cover everything, we have to study all the possible builds and make them usable.
  • Create balancing that avoids off-the-charts numbers in terms of damage and health points.

Will there be changes regarding the scaling of attacks and spells?

We’re satisfied with the difference brought to attacks and spells on the scaling level. It allows to have different balancing levers, and scaling spells on weapons would make it more difficult to balance hybrid profiles.
So, this system will most likely stay the way it is for the moment.

However, skills efficiency will be improved since we can now set values for each level of skill, which we hope to implement completely with the next content patch.

What are the changes brought to the ailment system with the next patch?

We’ll be implementing something that we planned and didn’t have the time to implement yet: reset the ailment timer when the ailment is reapplied. It will make attack speed much less mandatory when you play such a build, and it will make it easier for players to build up ailment stacks on creatures, which allows for more variety in character builds.

Where are we now on the difficulty modes?

We have planned at least 2 levels of difficulty for the release. One would be a “story mode” where you can make the story without too much challenging content, and one would be a normal mode based on our vision of what we want in terms of difficulty in Wolcen.

We’re considering a higher difficulty mode as well, but we don’t want it to be just based on more health points and more damage coming from monsters. We’re currently working on a system that allows variations on the intensity of the encounters for a customizable experience.

Hardcore mode is also planned but it will not be available until we’re satisfied with the balancing and the game fluidity of the base game.

What is the difference between a Unique item and a Legendary item?

Legendary items are meant to be very powerful rares. They offer a higher amount of affixes and can be extremely valuable when you find one with the good affixes, the good tier, and the good numbers.
If you meet all these conditions, you can have the best item for your build.

Unique items are meant to help players during the leveling and to provide unique affixes that can’t be found on other items of the same type, or unique effects that can open new ways to play various builds.
We prefer aiming for many unique effects and affixes in the long term so these items bring extra value to some builds or even allow for very specific builds.

Are you planning any changes or improvements on the various protection mechanisms (Force Shield, Health, All resistance, Dodge, Life leech)?

There should be no redefinition of these defenses, but we are planning changes in the way they are scaled and in the way they interact with various stats through unique items and through the Gate of Fates. There are ongoing discussions about this; for the moment the only thing we are sure of is that we’re working on ways to make them equally viable and not let “All resistance” mandatory for any and all protection choices.

We’re also working on more visual feedback for the Force Shield since it’s currently difficult to track its status.

Are there changes planned for the attribute system?

We’re not entirely satisfied with this system in its current state, but we will improve it through various iterations. The reset timer added to the ailments will bring more value to Wisdom both in offense and defense since enemies will also benefit from this change and apply more stacks of ailments as well. The bonuses brought by Wisdom will then be more interesting.

When will crafting be available?

There are a lot of discussions about crafting at the office. The only thing that we can share now is that it will be available at the release to offer complementary options regarding itemization, and we will tell you more on that subject in a future announcement.

Are you planning any changes on the camera placement?

Considering Wolcen’s creatures have complex attack patterns, it’s important that players have enough visibility to anticipate their moves. Presently, we feel it's not enough and we would like to make some more testing around this to improve the player's vision, especially at the bottom of the screen.

How could you restore some “Open World” feeling in Wolcen?

We have two types of levels right now in Wolcen: fixed levels mostly used for the story, and random levels used for everything else. It’s presently very difficult technically to make events in random environments, but we’re working on making it happen so players can explore random environments with optional areas and secondary quests at the release.

What about waypoints?

We want to increase the number of waypoints and saving spots, especially near strategic events/encounters.

We hope that these answers have brought you some interesting elements on our vision for Wolcen’s gameplay, and how we would like the game to be in the future.

Thank you for your support!

Hello everyone!

A few weeks ago we introduced two of the five new skills brought with the next Content Patch: Warpath and ‘Avenger’ Autoturret.

It is now time to introduce the three remaining skills that will be added in the game! Keep in mind that everything we show you there is still a work in progress.

Gunslinger’s Brand is a new skill that allows you to mark targets and shoot them automatically once you have finished marking them or if you release the spell. Targets can be either monsters or locations and can be selected by a click.

It offers a brand new experience with ranged weapon targeting and we can’t wait to have your feedback about the feeling of this skill.

Gunslinger’s brand requires a ranged weapon (bow/pistol) to be used.

Flak Handcannon

Add an explosive touch to your shots with this modifier.

Leave No Witnesses

This modifier allows you to choose more targets while using Gunslinger’s brand.

Whirlwind comes back with the next Content Patch and it’s now called Bladestorm! Target a location and cut your way through enemies on your path by using this skill.
Bladestorm is an Attack and can be used with melee weapons.

Voknafein’s Conviction

Make Bladestorm a channeled skill and control your character’s direction while using it by choosing this modifier.

Long Pommel

Improve the reach of your attack by choosing this modifier.

This is one of the latest skills we’ve started to work on. Wrath of Baäpheth allows you to substantially increase the range of melee attacks.
It can be used with melee weapons.

Taste for Vengeance

You will be able to add an additional AOE combo to the skill with this modifier.

More modifiers are planned for each of these skills and we will share them with you when we approach Wrath of Sarisel’s release.

As always, thank you for your support!
