Battlezone 98 Redux

In addition to the VR Battlezone reboot Rebellion announced last summerBattlezone 98 Redux, a remake of the 1998 version of Battlezone that was developed by Activision (which as Wikipedia explains bears little resemblance to the original"), is in the works.

Both Game Rankings and MobyGames indicate that it received a very positive critical response, including a 93 percent review score from yours truly (in the magazine, of course, as this was 18 years ago). While the original game's fiction, as far as I can remember, didn't get much beyond tanks in space, Battlezone 98 Redux is set in an alt-history 1960s, in which the space race has led to a shooting war between the US and the USSR over mysterious alien bio-metals.

Battlezone 98 Redux will blend first-person combat with real-time strategy, featuring remastered visuals, online multiplayer, and near unlimited mod content from Steam Workshop. There will be two separate single-player campaigns, one American and one Soviet, comprised of 29 missions spread across seven different planetary environments, as well as Deathmatch and Strategy online modes for two to eight players.

The system requirements:

The Little Willie:

  • OS: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10
  • Processor: Dual-core CPU with SSE3 (Intel Pentium D 3GHz / AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 4200) or better

  • Graphics: Microsoft DirectX 10.0 compatible graphics card with 256 MB of memory (NVIDIA GeForce 8800 series / ATI Radeon™ HD 2600 Pro) or better
  • Storage: 2 GB available space
  • Sound Card: Microsoft DirectX 10.0 compatible sound card or better

The Challenger 2:

  • OS: Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10
  • Processor: Intel Core™ i5 / AMD FX series or better
  • Memory: 6 GB RAM

Edit: This article originally conflated Rebellion's VR Battlezone with Battlezone 98 Redux. They are, in fact, two different games.

Battlezone 98 Redux - Rebellion

Rebellion are delighted to reveal much anticipated remaster of Battlezone (1998) - one of the greatest sci-fi strategy titles ever made (in our opinion)!

Launching on Steam for PC this Spring, Battlezone 98 Redux keeps the core rush of first-person action and RTS gameplay that earned widespread critical acclaim, and blends it with remastered visuals, online multiplayer and the potential for near limitless new content with support for Steam Workshop mods!

Made by devs from the original Battlezone (1998)
As lots of you reading this will know, Battlezone (1998)’s revolutionary gameplay fostered a really strong community that still develops mods for the game to this day.

To ensure Battlezone 98 Redux remained faithful to the community, we enlisted the developers at Big Boat Interactive, who include three developers from the 1998 Battlezone game and played a key part in keeping the community alive for 18 years.

We’re going to let Mike and the Big Boat guys loose on these community pages very soon, so watch out!

Rebellion’s first externally developed title
Hiring Big Boat Interactive to develop Battlezone 98 Redux marks another significant milestone for Rebellion too!

Since we self-published the PC editions of Sniper Elite V2 and Sniper Elite 3 games, Rebellion has changed from “just” being a games studio, to being one of the UK’s largest indie studio and publisher with the multi-format retail release of Zombie Army Trilogy in 2015 for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Battlezone 98 Redux represents a new chapter in this journey, the first in a series of Rebellion IP to be developed out-of-house as our internal teams continue to crack on with Battlezone for PlayStation VR, and more unannounced “AAA” titles.

So for now, thank you for your support and we hope you’re as excited for Battlezone 98 Redux as we are!

When Sniper Elite devs Rebellion announced last year that they were bringing back Battlezone, everyone responded “Oh. But not the good Battlezone?” (by which I mean I said that, but I’m using my authority to make you complicit, sucker). Luckily, Rebellion soon added that as well as making a game based on Atari’s 1980 arcade shooter, they were revamping The Good Battlezone, the FPS/RTS Activision released in 1998.

Now we know that Battlezone 98 Redux [official site], as they’re calling it, will arrive in spring with Steam Workshop support for mods and other new bits.
