WARMACHINE: Tactics

A couple of years ago we pointed your attention towards the Kickstarter for Warmachine: Tactics, a game of "steam-powered robots and elite warriors in raging battles dominated by magic and mechanika." Developer Privateer Press Interactive asked for $550,000 to convert the Warmachine tabletop game into a turn-based tactical PC game, and ended up with nearly triple that amount. We haven't said much (anything, really) about it since then, but if you're curious how it's all worked out, a free demo is now kicking around on Steam.

The demo offers three of the 20 levels available in the single-player game, as well as the skirmish mode and access to multiplayer matches, including against owners of the full game, but with limited squad-building options. Customizable loadouts for four of the game's six main factions are included, each with a unique visual and play style.

For those who already own Warmachine: Tactics and are digging it appropriately, the Retribution of Scyrah DLC was also released today. The expansion adds an entirely new faction to the game that includes eight new units: Dawnlord Vyros, Hydra, Manticore, Gorgon, Dawnguard Invictor, Dawnguard Sentinel, House Shyeel Battle Mage, and Mage Hunter Infiltrator. A bug-fix update to the game was released alongside the new DLC, but the announcement acknowledges that a rather large number of "known issues" remain unresolved.

  • The Mangler's Thresher attack does not benefit from boosted attack rolls while under Magnus's Iron Aggression.
  • Units sometimes will show incorrect facing after moving diagonally or hit with a Free Strike.
  • Putting focus into Stationary Units will remove the Frozen visual effect, even if the Stationary Effect is not yet shaken.
  • Enemy Cinerators in Mission 7 may become stuck if the player runs their army to the mine when the Mission begins.
  • Framerate may drop or hang during the AI turn on Single Player and Skirmish Matches with heavy troop numbers or systems with minimum required hardware.
  • Bonus damage from Backstab and Poison do not properly stack.
  • Assault Kommando's Assault and Battery not doing full charge damage.
  • The Renegade warjack's Critical Shred does not trigger on a charge.
  • Exemplar Errants can trigger Quick Work by killing friendly units.

  • The Blind Status from Gorman Di Wulfe's Black Oil will now properly remain on the target for 1 round if the unit forfeits one of their actions.
  • Gorman Di Wulfe's Black Oil will now prevent Ranged and Magic attacks.
  • Gorman Di Wulfe's Black Oil will now expire on its own if the affected unit does not activate.
  • Optimizations for the AI in Single Player and Skirmish, reducing frame rate drops on AI turns. This issue may still occur on some systems.

    KNOWN ISSUES
  • The water texture on some single player missions can appear as a solid grey texture.
  • The grid and grid-targeting highlights (when using Flame Wall or Mage Sight) will appear beneath parts of the terrain in Snowy Valley.
  • Asphyxious's and Sturgis's Teleport will not accept destinations they could not normally move to.
  • Heavy Warjacks do not incur freestrikes from trampling.
  • Skarlock Thralls that kill a living unit with Convection do not grant Focus Allocation.
  • Skarlock Thralls can make a melee attack and cast a spell in the same activation.
  • The Mangler's Thresher attack does not benefit from boosted attack rolls while under Magnus's Iron Aggression.
  • Units sometimes will show incorrect facing after moving diagonally or hit with a Free Strike.
