The General Electric U34CH, a big, burly diesel locomotive built in the 1970s that hauled commuters in New Jersey and New York for more than two decades is now ready for Train Simulator duty – and the U34CH is accompanied in this new DLC pack by Pullman-Standard Comet I equipment!
Coming to Train Simulator in May, “The Battle for Sherman Hill” will deliver the ultimate railroading experience on Union Pacific’s legendary and historic crossing of America’s Continental Divide! With “The Battle for Sherman Hill,” you’ll tackle the challenges of moving heavy freight, from the steam era to the railroading of today!
To bring more than half-a-century of railroading to life, “The Battle of Sherman Hill” will include Train Simulator’s popular Sherman Hill route, five locomotive and equipment packs, and nine specially created and highly realistic career scenarios!
With “The Battle for Sherman Hill, you’ll tackle the challenges of moving heavy freight throughout the decades, from the steam era to the railroading of today. In a scene of contemporary Union Pacific railroading on Sherman Hill, a trio of GE ES44ACs lead a westbound grain train while a single GE is working as a DPU on the rear of an eastbound coal train.
Big Boy! With the upcoming Train Simulator “Battle for Sherman Hill,” you’ll take the throttle of the world’s largest steam locomotive – Union Pacific’s Alco-built 4-8-8-4 “Big Boy -- and challenge the unforgiving 1.5 percent grades of Sherman Hill’s eastern slope. At Dale, Wyoming, east- and westbound freights with Big Boy power meet at speed. Note: Screenshots depict content while in development.
Powerful, elegant, and fast – that was Union Pacific’s 4-6-6-4 Challenger locomotives. In a scene recalling the 1950s, Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 3985, destined for a long and famous career, emerges from the east portal of Sherman Hill’s Hermosa Tunnel with a priority Pacific Fruit Express refrigerator train in tow.
Train Simulator’s upcoming “The Battle for Sherman Hill” will bring to life more than half-a-century of railroading across the Laramie Mountains, including a brief period in the late 1950s when Union Pacific super steam and gas-electric turbines served together. UP GTEL “Big Blow” No. 2 has overtaken a westbound manifest on the slopes of the Train Simulator Sherman Hill route.
Battle for Sherman Hill is coming soon to Train Simulator 2020.
The one-of-a-kind prototype electric locomotive that was set to transform the East Coast Main Line, the BR Class 89 is now available to drive in Train Simulator 2020:
The BR Class 89 was a prototype electric locomotive that was set to transform the East Coast Main Line, and while reality went in a different direction, one cannot deny the unique and powerful design that was the “Badger”, and this one-of-a-kind loco is available to drive in Train Simulator!
With the ECML amidst major transformation in the form of electrification, British Rail were keen to source a brand new fleet of electric locomotives that would haul services under the new wires. The initial specification was drawn up by Brush at Loughborough and built at Crewe Works in 1986. Unfortunately, the fate of the type was essentially sealed in the same year, when BR changed their specification requirements after Brush had committed to building the locomotive.
The new loco rolled off the production line and was dubbed the BR Class 89, boasting 6 traction motors which would power it up to 125mph in service.
Passenger service on the ECML was rather brief, it was used on London – Leeds services for only about 3 years before a serious failure occurred, and the locomotive fell by the wayside. It was rescued by some Brush employees, and appeared at some events across the country, but the future looked bleak.
But then came privatisation, BR and its sectors had been replaced by rail franchises, and the newly formed GNER franchise purchased the sole Class 89 for its own use following a motive power shortage. It entered service once again in 1997, but history rhymed, and in 2001 a major failure put the loco out of use and this time it was for good. The 89 was once sold into preservation once again, where it remains to this day with the long-term goal of making it operational for railtour use.
While its service life was brief, and it never got the chance to become the mainline workhorse it was meant to be, the BR Class 89 found a place in many enthusiasts hearts, its unique design earned itself the nickname of “Badger”, and it offered the occasional break from the norm for spotters.
Fans of the “Badger” rejoice, as this unsung stallion can now be experienced in Train Simulator!
