August 2nd — August 5th
Operation Polkovodets Rumyantsev
On August 3rd, 1943, the Battle of Kursk reached its final stage: the Red Army began the Belgorod-Kharkov offensive operation, named “Polkovodets Rumyantsev” after one of the most prominent Russian generals of the 18th century. The goals of the operation were met, although it came at a price. Belgorod was liberated on August 5th, and Kharkov on August 23rd. Ever since then City Day is celebrated there on those dates.

August 6th — August 9th
Operation Lüttich
A desperate counteroffensive by the German forces against US positions near the town of Mortain in Normandy was named Operation Lüttich after the Belgian town of Liege, the site of a German victory in early WWI. But in August of ‘44 Germany lacked enough firepower for an effective counterattack, and the Allies controlled the air. The Germans hoped to take the enemy by surprise, but that wasn’t enough: as a result they lost half of their tanks, and in a couple of weeks the entire 7th Army of Wehrmacht was encircled and surrendered to the Allies.

August 10th — August 13th
Tartu offensive
Having liberated Narva in late June of 1944, the Red Army moved further west, towards Tartu, Estonia’s second largest city. But instead of attacking the enemy’s well-reinforced positions head-on, the Soviet forces crossed Lake Peipus, having transported several thousand troops behind the enemy lines. This played an important part in the liberation of Tartu that finally happened on August 25th.

August 13th — August 16th
Operation Eagle Attack
August 13th, 1940, was marked in Wehrmacht’s plans as the Adlertag, “Eagle Day”. On this day the Luftwaffe planned to execute Operation Eagle Attack, crushing the British Air Force ahead of Operation Sea Lion that meant invasion of Great Britain by the German troops. But neither in Eagle Day nor in the next month the Luftwaffe managed to secure a decisive aerial victory. So Operation Sea Lion was canceled, and Germany instead resorted to mass bombings of Britain.

August 17th — August 20th
Operation Starlite
The first major military operation of US troops in Vietnam. Having received intel on the upcoming attack of Viet Cong forces on the American Chu Lai Air Base, the US command led a preemptive combined arms assault involving ground, air, and naval units. On August 18th, 1965, the Marines landed near the Viet Cong positions, leaving the enemy no chance. The surviving guerrillas were forced to retreat.

August 21st — August 24th
Kozelsk offensive
From August 22nd through September 10th, 1942, the Red Army led a counteroffensive under Kaluga, hoping to encircle the German forces in a small salient. The Soviet army lost 500 tanks in the fierce battles and failed to achieve their goals: the Germans were stalled but not encircled.

August 24th — August 27th
Battle of Milne Bay
On August 25th, 1942, the Japanese Marine forces led an attack on the Allied airfield at Milne Bay on the easternmost point of New Guinea. The Japanese command has severely underestimated the numbers of Australian troops that ultimately crushed the attackers, forcing the survivors to evacuate. It was the first major victory of the Allies over Japanese infantry in World War II.

August 28th — August 31st
Battle of Alam el Halfa
From August 30th through September 5th, 1942, the Axis powers under the command of General Field Marshal Erwin Rommel tried to encircle the British army to the south of El-Alamein in Egypt. It was the last major Axis offensive in Africa: Rommel hoped to crush the British until their reinforcements arrived. Little did he know that the enemy, having cracked the Enigma code, intercepts all their messages. The British baited the Axis forces to a place of their choosing, used tanks as anti-tank guns and successfully repelled the attack.

War Thunder - Blitzkrieg Wulf

In this digest we would like to tell you about our continuing work on improvements and fixes in the game. You can find information about all updates that have been released in War Thunder in the website special section.

Who’s stronger?

It’s nice to flex your muscles and compare achievements, but it’s even nicer to win such a competition! To make that easier for you, we’ve added the “Compare Gaijin.Net Achievements” button right inside the Achievements tab. It allows you to check them out and compare your progress with any other player.

Also the “Trophies” section of the Achievements tab is now called “Gaijin.Net Achievements”.

Helpful UI Improvements

A whole spectrum of improvements that will make your experience easier and more pleasant. Let’s keep it short and simple.

Among the Battle Pass rewards there are some prizes you can’t claim at the moment (for example, if you still haven’t claimed the previous prizes). On their icons in the Battle Pass window there’s a lock, which now has become a button. Click on it to learn what you need to do to claim the prize.

The list of all titles and your progress in earning them can be found in the same window where you choose and set them up. “Titles” and “Medals” sections have been removed from the Achievements tab: they were superfluous as they could be found elsewhere.

Finally, we’ve added a “Track progress” button in the player icon selection menu to keep an eye out for the icons you haven’t earned yet.

Working on Smoke

This mechanic saved lots of tankers from untimely demise, and thus deserves the highest attention. And there was something that needed fixing, too. We’ve added a delay between separate salvos of smoke grenades. You’ve probably had this happen to you: one misclick, and you shoot this valuable resource out twice. Well, that should no longer be a concern.

We’ve also fixed a few errors. One of them caused shooting a different number of smoke grenades in a volley than the one stated in the UI. Various different tanks were affected by it. Another one caused more smoke grenades to be loaded into your vehicle on a capture point than its maximum capacity.

More improvements

We’re constantly improving all aspects of War Thunder. The sounds of ground and air battles continues to be adjusted to avoid the appearance of "silent" vehicles. the sequence of bomb drops for some aircraft has been clarified and the animations for the naval weaponry have been corrected. Be sure to read the full list of improvements!

Once again, many thanks for all your bug reports that you submitted using our special service.

Update 2.17.0.97

  • The “Awards” section has been removed from the “Achievements” menu since it was duplicating the “Awards” tab.

Other Changes
  • A bug has been fixed that caused a sudden colour shift while in battle.
  • A bug has been fixed where the water surface might be displayed differently in repeated benchmarks ‘Tank battle” on minimal graphic settings.

Guides that contain screenshots, videos, different headers, and clear explanations will further enhance it and will ensure it stands out amongst the crowd!

The prizes

Creating a Guide can be a time consuming task, so we are rewarding handsomely! We will choose up to 5 winners which will be based on how comprehensive, useful and in depth the guide is.

The max reward that you have the possibility of winning is 3,000 GE and lowest 1,000 GE. It is up to the judges to decide based on the merit of the guide you have created.

Besides this, our judges will give out the brand new “Steam Snail” decal, which has never been obtainable in War Thunder! If you win, and have created an outstanding guide, our judges will hand out this decal alongside the GE prize.

Object 248 was an experimental version of the IS-2 Soviet heavy tank armed with a 100mm gun. The vehicle becomes the main prize in the upcoming new season of the Battle Pass called “Field testing”!

Object 248, heavy tank, USSR, rank IV. Premium.

Features:
  • Effective 100mm gun
  • Higher reload time
  • Decent protection
  • Tight layout in the combat compartment

The experimental Object 248 heavy tank will become the main prize of the upcoming new season of the Battle Pass called “Field testing”. The tank is based on the IS-2 design, with its gun changed to a 100mm S-34. The IS-2 is a venerable veteran in War Thunder ground battles. Well protected, with smooth ballistics of its 122mm gun, the tank is a master of ambushes and long-range duels. One of the main drawbacks in the good old IS-2 is its very long reload time, which makes it difficult to play the tank in active assaults.

The Object 248 offers an excellent balance of armor penetration and reload speed. The 100mm BR-412B armor-piercing chamber rounds, familiar to tankers from the SU-100 and T-54 tanks, have the same armor penetration indicators as the powerful IS-2 chamber rounds, but the reloading takes in fact half the time! Of course, the explosives weight is incomparably lower, but it is quite sufficient to detonate the ammo rack of an enemy tank or destroy any important module - the main thing is to hit and to pierce.

The Object 248 inherits some of the flaws from the IS-2. The unfortunate vulnerable zone on the upper front glacis of the hull still requires turning the hull from the enemy. The layout of the habitable space of the turret has become even more dense, as on the IS-2. Hitting the side of the turret or turret ring very often sends the tank to the hangar instantly. But the advantages of the Soviet "heavyweight" are present as well! First, in general, good protection of the hull and high ricochet chance in the turret. Second, the comparatively good speed, and especially the reverse speed, will allow you to play the Object 248 almost like a medium tank, popping up for a shot from cover and hiding again to reload.

The premium Object 248 will be yours for completing stage 75 on the new Battle pass season. Get ready for “Field Testing” and stay tuned for the full list of rules for the new season!
