Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Tiktak
The work is not stopping on the Germany Rework project for Euro Truck Simulator 2. While we previously reworked the Rhine region for the 1.50 update, we are moving on to other areas. This time, we would like to share with you the progress we made in the city of Bremen and its surroundings.

Bremen is a historic city located in the northern part of Germany near the North Sea on the Weser River. The city is renowned for its picturesque medieval architecture, including the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Bremen Town Hall and Roland Statue.

In Euro Truck Simulator 2, the whole city was completely rebuilt from the ground up. As part of this transformation, we added the port of Bremerhaven to the map, located approximately 60 km to the north of Bremen, which is one of Europe's foremost car transshipment hubs. More than 2 million cars are imported or exported through this port every year.

Truckers delivering cargo in and out of Bremen will come across a completely new intersection leading into the city which was transformed to better represent its real-life counterpart. As you navigate it, you will also be able to get a peek at the vibrant historic city center and drive through some beautiful parts of Bremen.

Another part we wanted to focus on was the economy in and around the city. We made an effort to simulate a more realistic economy by incorporating industries located in this area such as a car factory, a beverage factory, and the river port situated on the Weser River.

We are eager to explore this reworked part of Germany once it is released and hope you are too! But keep in mind that everything you see here is still a work in progress and can change. Until then, don't forget to stay tuned for more updates by following us on our TwitterFacebookInstagram, and YouTube. We will see you on the road!

Euro Truck Simulator 2 - London
With the recent release of the JCB Equipment Pack for Euro Truck Simulator 2 & American Truck Simulator we wanted to take the opportunity to talk with one of the driving forces behind the new and unique addition. In today's 'Under The Hood' blog, we spoke with George, Art Leader of Vehicles, who helped bring this DLC to life.

Renowned for their innovation and reliability, The JCB Equipment Pack includes 10 different branded construction and agricultural machinery from JCB's machinery line-up for drivers to haul and deliver across the virtual roads of Europe and America. So what was the inspiration behind creating this DLC?

"At the time, the project was entrusted to me, as I had the most experience in our party. I accepted the offer with enthusiasm and humility, and now in retrospect I have to say that working with everyone involved was a daily joy that continues. We are no longer just a bunch of enthusiasts, but also, above all, one big family that works as a team to care for this baby that we created together".

So what was your role in creating the JCB Equipment Pack? We asked George to find out. "In the middle of 2023, after a three-year break, I returned to SCS as a senior 3D artist. I spent over 7 years at SCS before leaving, so there was no need to familiarize myself with work processes and technology from scratch. The guys at SCS have come a long way in that time and have done a lot of work to improve the output quality, tools and workflows. My first assigned task was the JCB FASTRAC 4220 Icon cargo asset. I immediately fell in love with it because it is a racer among tractors".

So how many people were involved in the creation of this DLC? "At the time, 2 artists were working on JCB and gradually others, including me, joined. In total, our team of 3D graphic artists consisted of asset creators Dino Čičak, Luboš Gregor, and Serhii Trystan, and for cabin accessories, Wolfka. And of course many others were involved too, from production to research, QA and marketing. Over time, the project swelled and thus the need for greater control and optimization of production grew".

So how long did it take to create this DLC, and which cargoes were the most fun and/or most challenging to create? "After almost a year of hard work, nurturing, tuning and optimizing every single machine or toy, we got the green light. The final product was approved at all levels! We are delighted that there is huge interest for JCB content in both our game".

With such an extensive catalogue, how did you decide which JCB equipment and machinery to include? "Reference materials cannot be neglected, the quality of which reflects the result. These were delivered in the form of CAD models directly from JCB, which also set a preferred selection of machines that we mutually agreed upon".

George goes on to explain further "Our game also requires balanced and interesting content in this regard. As for the CAD files, they are mainly intended for the production of real machines, containing millions of polygons and are useless for the game itself. In our case, they only served as a template. These detailed templates had to be supplemented with photogrammetry, in simple terms a technology for processing several hundred walkaround photos, from which a 3D model is subsequently created using specialized software. Compared to a CAD template, such a model offers an additional level of information, such as the real surface and colors of materials. And you can easily check how a real object really looks in a real environment. This package of references was a pleasure to work with".

Did you or any of the team get to see any of the machinery for yourself in person? "Thanks to this, we were able to get to know the beautiful and in some cases giant machines face to face. In this case, huge thanks go out to the Czech companies TERRAMET and PEKASS (construction and agricultural machinery), who made this photogrammetry process possible for us".

Were there any challenges and what did you do to overcome them? "JCB is a globally recognized, leading manufacturer of construction and agricultural machinery. Therefore, much more effort had to be made to meet JCB's strict requirements, as well as a greater focus on detail and quality of workmanship. Fortunately, SCS already has extensive experience with this".

"We love how much detail was put into each of the machinery and cabin accessories too, was that an important aspect for the team?" SCS Software is a game studio with more than 25 years of experience in the field of game development. In that time, it has built up a reputation proven by a strong fan base. Therefore, our priority in this effort is to persevere and still offer interesting content regardless of the complexity of this process. But as always, everything is about people, and I can say with a clear conscience that I have always been able to fully rely on every member of the team, regardless of their previous experience". George goes onto explain more "The team members either already have the experience or just want to achieve them. Both variants are sufficient for success. The rest is just about a positive attitude, communication and team spirit. We each contributed equally and learnt from each other. Which, by the way, is the nice thing about our work, to be able to share ideas and tricks with each other and thus move forward professionally".

"In this case, it was necessary to set the imaginary bar a little higher and focus precisely on the realism of the design, while maintaining our optimization standards. Simply said, the models are at the same level as any other similar cargo assets in the game in terms of geometry complexity and texture size, with the only difference being that we spent more time on individual aspects - to get detail where it's justified, polishing individual curves or unifying texture details and colours as if all of these were the work of one individual. So there was a need to think more about sharing our workflow and know-how across the entire DLC".

"I believe that DLCs of this focus will open the way for us to other similar projects in the future. So there is definitely something to look forward to".

Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Tiktak
Exciting news! We're happy to reveal that the Renault Trucks E-Tech T is the first electric vehicle to join Euro Truck Simulator 2 and is now available to drive through the Quick Jobs section in the game! Our continued partnership with Renault Trucks allows us to bring this cutting-edge, fully electric truck to our incredible community.

Back in April, we announced that the E-Tech T would be the first EV in Euro Truck Simulator in this blog. This announcement was followed by Renault Trucks' gracious invitation for us to attend the grand reveal event of the Renault Trucks E-Tech T, fondly dubbed the Good Truck, featuring the innovative LumiLor paint job, at their headquarters in Lyon. Following the reveal, Renault Trucks is currently taking this truck on a roadshow around Europe. It was a great pleasure to share this event with our #BestCommunityEver through a live stream directly from the venue. In that live stream, we also showcased the Renault Trucks E-Tech T in Euro Truck Simulator 2 for the first time ever, and you can watch the recording below!

Now let's take a closer look at this electric marvel! The Renault Trucks E-Tech T features a regular Renault T cabin with a completely new interior and a 4x2 chassis. The drivetrain features three electric motors mounted alongside the gearbox in the middle of the chassis, collectively providing 490 kW of power.

The vehicle is equipped with a new fully digital dashboard computer that includes two screens. Additionally, a blind spot detector is integrated into the A-pillars. For the right-hand drive option, there is also a different interior layout. The E-Tech T also uses regenerative braking, which allows it to partially recharge using the engine brake or the service brake as much as 80 % of the energy invested in acceleration.

As we previously said, just like in the real world, transitioning to electric vehicles poses unique challenges in our virtual realm. While our team has worked tirelessly to bring the E-Tech T to ETS2, our in-game infrastructure isn't fully ready to support electric vehicles. Gas stations, initially designed for traditional fuel vehicles, can't easily become electric charging stations without major modifications.

Currently, we're embarking on an experimental phase, our initial steps toward in-game electrification. That is why the E-Tech T, along with a few other electric trucks planned for the future, will be introduced in a special mode and will be accessible only through the Quick Jobs section with the delivery length for the E-Tech T limited to 300 km. In case you run out of power while on the road, we have implemented an emergency recharging service that can help you out for a fee. Our cautious approach ensures a smooth experience as we gradually integrate electric vehicles into our virtual world.

This update will not reset the in-game economy, so it may take some time for a quick job with the new E-Tech T to appear in your game. Please be patient and allow some in-game time to pass if you don't see a quick job with this new truck right away.

The introduction of the E-Tech T is a big milestone that marks the beginning of our journey toward in-game electrification - a historic moment for our community. We are more than proud that Renault Trucks has given us their trust to bring the beautiful and technologically advanced E-Tech T as the very first EV to our game. We eagerly await our community's feedback on its quietness, acceleration, behaviour, and smoothness and hope you will have fun driving it in Euro Truck Simulator 2.

Don't forget that we've partnered with Renault Trucks for another community design, which you can still apply for! In this new contest, our community is invited to assist the Renault Trucks team in designing a second paint job for the E-Tech T truck. This design will later be recreated on another fully electric and real E-Tech T vehicle, and also in Euro Truck Simulator 2. All finalists of this design contest will receive an exclusive package of Renault Trucks and SCS Software merchandise, along with exciting gifts from another esteemed partner, Thrustmaster!

We hope you are as excited as we are to try out this very first electric truck in Euro Truck Simulator 2! When you do, make sure to share your experience with us on our X/TwitterInstagramFacebook, YouTube, and TikTok.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Tiktak
Some time ago, part of our team travelled to the north of Scandinavia to gather references for the upcoming Nordic Horizons DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2. Now, they would like to share with our #BestCommunityEver the experience of this journey to northernmost Europe.

Four members of our team embarked on this trip and travelled hundreds of kilometres throughout northern Scandinavia in a few days. Dominik, Ivo, Mary, and Voytek are already using the gathered information to put this map expansion together.

"Exploring northern Scandinavia was a great experience. We started from the Finnish city of Rovaniemi towards the north and it was interesting to see how the landscape was gradually changing. The forests became smaller and more sparse until they disappeared completely, gradually being replaced by open plains until we finally reached the vast fjords on the coast. We took the road back past Abisko National Park, the huge mines of Kiruna and on through the deep forests to the south. Along the way, we were impressed by the large amount of wildlife. The reindeer were walking along the roads and were not at all interested in the surrounding traffic. We visited many interesting places, such as Abisko National Park, Nordkapp, the northernmost point in Europe, and Santa's Village," says Dominik.

As you might have read in one of our previous blogs, Nordic Horizons will include reindeer appearing on the map, which, as the team confirms here, is not a rare occasion in real life.

"The most extraordinary part was reindeer walking along the main road, not really bothered by cars around them. Every day we were surrounded by changing nature: the landscape mostly consisted of forests in Finland and Sweden, stretching for dozens of kilometres between towns or villages, and fjords or hills on the northern coast of Norway. It was so remote and empty, with barely any traffic, which was a big difference from German autobahns full of travellers, where I was driving just a few days before. Even though I travel a lot, this was my first real road trip, in which we covered so much in just over a week. I think the experience we loved the most, was the Arctic Moose Farm run by a lovely, elderly couple in the middle of nowhere," says Voytek.

Journeys like these can significantly help the researchers in their work as they can absorb much more information from their visit to the countries than they would have if only researching on the internet.

"Our trip to Lapland was a great opportunity to experience the Nordic countries in a way you simply cannot achieve just by looking at images. Even with all the prior knowledge, I was still surprised by just how much water there is - thousands of little lakes and streams. Also, how common are the reindeer? Or how beautiful is the scenery? It is hard to pick the most memorable moments, but my greatest personal achievements would be feeding a moose on a farm and swimming in a river on the Arctic Circle," Ivo told us.

After coming back from this journey, researchers continue to work on collecting information for the map designers from the photos and videos they took there and also using multiple tools on the internet.

"The trip was an amazing experience. It's always a huge advantage to see the country in the pre-production stage because it helps you get the sense and feeling of the country. And when you need certain references or details, you just go out and take the pictures you need. But the best moment of the trip for me has to be a short break on a moose farm because I got the chance to feed and pet the moose," Mary shared with us.

We look forward to sharing how this research trip translates to our virtual recreation of this region in the future. Until then, we hope you enjoyed this little insight on the process of creating a new map expansion, and how our teams gain experience and knowledge of the area. Don't forget to add the Nordic Horizons DLC to your Steam Wishlist and follow us on our social media (X/TwitterInstagramFacebook, YouTube, and TikTok)!

Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Tiktak
Today, we bring you a special blog, in which we would like to share more about how the city of Athens is being developed for the Greece DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2. We interviewed our map designer Aartee, who is working hard on implementing the city into our game!

„Greece is a beautiful country, especially in terms of landscape. There are so many beautiful places that sometimes, I wasn't able to decide what to put into the map. Also, I don't always get the opportunity to work on something coastal. My only regret is that there are very few monuments from antiquity left in Greece. unfortunately, time has taken everything away and so we can't have those in our map,“ Aartee says.

The team working on the Greece DLC visited the country last year to gather references for their work as you can read about in this blog. "The research was simple. Anything I liked was immediately recorded in some way and we could move on to the next thing. I have to admit, the vastness of Athens is incredible. Any hill would show a veritable whirlwind of buildings and flats, all spilling into each other as if it were one big white lake. Right from the beginning we knew we wanted a port in Athens; Piraeus is the most famous one in Greece, so we spent a lot of time with that. It was also important to find out the locations of the depots and put them in a way that made sense," Aartee shares with us.

The team then uses these materials to model the map expansion in our game. Not only that, they also use all possible map services like Google, Mapy.cz, Yandex, or Apple. "Streetview is a tool without which it could not be done. I also occasionally use videos from people who upload them to the internet, be it dashcams, vlogs or 360° videos. On our trip, we also made our own 360° videos so I draw from those as well," says Aartee.

Aartee already has experience working on cities from our previous DLCs like Porto, Belgrade, Tarragona, Tver, and Zagreb, and while some of his colleagues preferred to work on Greece’s islands, he wanted to work on this beautiful ancient gem. He also shared a step-by-step process of creating a city of this magnitude.

"Roads and depots are the cornerstone. The important thing is to connect the roads correctly and map out the overall size of the city. I also investigate any unevenness in both height and curves and fine-tune the roads to make them beautifully smooth and the curves visually pleasing. As a mapper, I tackle any optimization right from the start, as performance in our cities is very important to us. I try to plan my paths and assets so that individual views are somehow separated from each other and don't load assets that don't make sense to the player at that moment. Part of my process is also to delineate industrial, commercial, and residential zones. Every city has such a structure, and so it shouldn't be overlooked here. The rest of the mapping work is adding more and more details which is also the most fun part," he says.

Modelling a city this big can take up to six months and right now, Athens is about 75 % done. As Aartee says, the cities are done first and their surroundings are completed after that. He also tells us how we have to adjust the cities for our game and where we have to shift from reality.

"Mainly in visibility. There has to be a limit somewhere. Also, if there is a road situation that would be annoying to gameplay, then we'll tweak it a bit so we don't irritate the player unnecessarily. As for the choice of locations, sometimes we close our eyes to reality and allow trucks to go where they normally can't just because the location is nice to drive through. One last thing I'd like to note is our scale. Although we really enjoy creating cities, we can't stretch locations, everything takes its toll afterwards in space, time and optimizations."

Aartee also shared a preview of how the capital city of Greece will look like in Euro Truck Simulator 2. "Although it may not seem like it at first, Athens is a very industrial city that contains a bunch of chemical plants and logistics zones. There's certainly no shortage of sea views, and you can also look forward to narrower roads. Even though it's a big city you will also experience the beautiful surrounding nature. Athens also acts as a kind of thoroughfare, so we need a bunch of big intersections. As in real life, there will also be some landmarks in our city like some historical buildings or the Piraeus Port, which I am really looking forward to building. There are several marble mines scattered around Athens, so we had to include at least one."

And what does Aartee think players will like the most about Athens? "There will be one location in the city where you will see everything. That place has taken an incredible amount of work to create and I hope they will like it."

We cannot wait to show you more about this upcoming map expansion as it continues to be developed. Euro Truck Simulator 2 - London
Exciting news! The 1.50 update for Euro Truck Simulator 2 has officially rolled out and is ready for download on Steam. Packed with bug fixes, adjustments, and fresh content, this update promises an enhanced experience for all players. Check out the detailed features below and dive right in!

A huge shoutout to all who contributed, shared feedback, and reported bugs during the Experimental Beta phase. Your invaluable contributions have enabled us to fine-tune, refine, and eliminate bugs that slipped through the cracks initially. We hope that you'll enjoy the new features, changes and more than come with this update. Happy trucking!

Renderer Changes - (still based on DirectX 11 API for now)

We're consistently working on improving our rendering system. It's been a key focus for us lately, and although it's a project for the long run, we already have some new content available for you. So in version 1.50, we are introducing these highly requested improvements to the graphics of our games:
  • A new feature was added - TAA, or Temporal Anti-Aliasing, which sets itself apart from other anti-aliasing techniques, that aim to smooth images to reduce jagged edges or flickering through higher resolution rendering. Instead, TAA harnesses the timeline, particularly previous frames, to calculate color values as if from a higher resolution, providing a smoother result.

  • Cascaded shadow changes: Smooth transition when blending between cascades, smoother and better-stabilized shadow edges.

  • Soft particles: Particles and light flares smoothly fade out when near geometry, eliminating harsh intersections for a more seamless visual experience.

  • Lit/shadowed smoke: Smoke particles with enhanced volume perception and shading from sunlight, providing a more realistic and immersive atmosphere.

  • Far shadows: Ever-present shadows from distant large objects like factory halls, skyscrapers, and road overpasses, with the option to toggle them off in the Options menu.

  • Optimized light computation: Dynamic lights are evaluated in a single pass, known as clustered lighting, improving performance in night scenes.
User Interface Rework

We are introducing substantial UI updates to enhance player interaction and accommodate more features. The redesign adopts a flatter, minimalistic design with tooltips and layered navigation, ensuring easier accessibility. For most UI screens, the visible changes are just an evolution of the previous look, though functionally, a lot of work was invested into making them work more comfortably with a gamepad or a steering wheel, requiring less time reaching for a keyboard.

The biggest change is the Home screen redesign, a new Status Bar sitting atop many various UI screens, the Quick Menu shortcuts, new fonts, icons, and much more. The result should be a clearer look on 2K and 4K resolutions, with all the changes contributing to a more streamlined gaming experience.

Switzerland Rework

The eagerly awaited Switzerland Rework project is set to debut in the upcoming 1.50 version of Euro Truck Simulator 2. You can look forward to a complete redesign of Switzerland, including its major cities such as Geneva, Bern, and Zurich. Alongside these enhancements, the economy has been finely tuned to reflect reality, featuring additions like a chocolate factory depot.

But that's not all – the road network receives substantial upgrades too. Prepare to navigate the newly added sections of the A9 motorway and the challenging N19 road. Moreover, fulfilling the longstanding desire of many truckers, the A40/E25 route from Geneva to Aosta, Italy, promises an exhilarating journey beneath the majestic Mont Blanc. You can watch the trailer for this project below or find all the blogs about the rework here!

The team behind the huge Switzerland Rework is already engaged in another rework project; which we will share more about when the time is right.

Germany Rework - Rhine

For the 1.50 version, we have reworked the Rhine region as part of the Germany Rework project. In total, four cities were completely rebuilt - Dortmund, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Duisburg. Not only did we revamp the cities, but their surroundings as well so this whole region has been reimagined from the ground up. We also added a part of Autobahn 3 from Cologne to Frankfurt.

You can find out about this rework project in more detail in this blog dedicated to the cities in this region or another blog about industry and intersections in this part of Germany. This is surely not the last time you will hear about the Germany rework project as the team is already working on another part of the country!

Scania Demo Centre

The Scania Demo Centre in Södertälje, Sweden, which we developed in collaboration with Scania, is going to make its debut in the 1.50 version. This facility was established in 1995 and serves multiple purposes in real life. Mostly, Scania uses it to demonstrate their vehicles, both trucks and buses. The facility hosts up to 14 thousand visitors every year from universities to engineers and also allows drivers with a Category B license to try out Scania vehicles.

In-game, players will have the opportunity to navigate the meticulously recreated test track, featuring asphalt, forest, and gravel roads, offering diverse terrain challenges. This in-game circuit is an exact replica of the real one on a 1:1 scale. Remember, you need to own the Scandinavia DLC to be able to visit the Scania Demo Centre.

Lane Assistant

After implementing various driver assistance features, developing lane assistance was the next step for us. This system is more complicated because it has to work well with the different ways people control their vehicles. Making it work well with steering wheels with force feedback was particularly important, even though it was challenging because of possible problems like control-force feedback loops and other details.

Also, the lane assistant features different modes, each serving distinct purposes, making it more complicated. Now, truck drivers can enjoy simply turning it on along with adaptive cruise control, letting the truck do more of the driving.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Tiktak
Switzerland has undergone an amazing revitalisation with the 1.50 update, and what better way to celebrate than to take part in our latest World of Trucks event: Trade Connections – Switzerland! The fun starts soon, on Tuesday the 14th of May, nearly 6 years since our last trade connections event, and we think it's the perfect opportunity to kick-start the great new Swiss economy while experiencing all the fantastic updates!

The task at hand for our #BestCommunityEver is to achieve the community goal of delivering 20,000,000 tonnes of cargo, either to or from Switzerland. The connecting country can be any. This accomplishment will boost Switzerland’s imports and exports to all neighbouring countries including even those from afar.

As you help build Switzerland’s international trade connections, you will begin to experience the wide array of changes and additions that were so painstakingly and lovingly worked on. In particular the reworked cities of Bern, Geneva and Zurich, their connecting roads, highways and historical areas, not to mention the magnificent Alps, with some challenging routes to discover and incredible views. And, since the Swiss consume more chocolate per capita than any other European country, it seems fitting that we’ve added the new Charmey chocolate industry, as part of the new and more realistic economy. The list goes on...

Don't forget that you can also use your own trailer and experience the event in using the external market!

Rules

Using External Contracts or External Market, with a World of Trucks-connected profile in Euro Truck Simulator 2, the community goal is to deliver 20,000,000 tonnes of cargo to Switzerland from any other country or vice versa.

Players will achieve their personal goal by completing cargo deliveries between Switzerland and 10 different countries.

All jobs for the event need to be at least 200 km, or more.

You can check if your recent deliveries met these conditions using your Log Book in your World of Trucks profile.

Rewards

Personal: Players that complete 10 or more deliveries, of any cargo, will gain a unique World of Trucks Achievement, a Matterhorn cabin item and 3 random country pennant drops, including a rare Switzerland pennant, as Steam inventory items for Euro Truck Simulator 2.

Community: When the community goal of achieving 20,000,000 tonnes of cargo to or from Switzerland is met and if the player has also achieved their personal goal, then they will receive a Saint Bernard plush as a Steam inventory item for their cabin.

The event will be concluded on Sunday the 14th of July at 23:59 UTC.

We hope you enjoy our reworked Switzerland and all that it has to offer, and we look forward to seeing all your photos from your journey's during the event. Please share them using the hashtag #TradeConnectionsSwitzerland on our Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram profiles and we will share our favourite ones (we may even feature some of them in a future blog post!).
