We just launched The New Director free DLC for Curious Expedition 2! It's a free update, so it will be available to you immediately if you already own the game or if you just bought it.
This update features a new game mode (Director Mode) and plenty of new content. For those who like to discover things on their own, we suggest to stop reading here and just go play the game, you will eventually encounter some of the newest additions regardless of if you're playing the Campaign Mode or the Director Mode. For those who'd like a bit more information and are not afraid of spoilers, keep reading...
New game mode: Director Mode
Since releasing version 1.0 earlier this year, many of you have asked for an alternative game mode, less focused on the story compared to the existing Campaign Mode, and providing more replayability. We've listened to your feedback, and that's where the Director Mode comes in.
Narratively this mode takes place after the original campaign, starting in 1890. You take over as the Director of the Exposition as you explore islands containing greater dangers than you've ever faced before. For each year you complete, you have to add a new negative modifier to your trek. The end goal is to collect all the different Director Modifiers, and then complete one final year with them. It's not going to be easy!
We also introduced a new Hall of Fame screen where you'll be able to keep track of all your runs in both game modes.
New Biome: Corrupted Portal Worlds
This is a chaotic and unfriendly place, but one that offers new opportunities for those who know what they are looking for. It's a mysterious landscape heavily influenced by the purple fog, and dominated by features that aren't quite right. It definitely stands apart for most things that you've seen in Curious Expedition 2 so far. It's only accessible through portals that will appear throughout the game, so keep your eyes open for those.
This biome features a brand new location (the Mirror Circle) and corrupted versions of existing locations, new items, new events, new enemies and new creatures, such as the Jellyfish (which can be tamed to join your trek) and a massive monstrous creature known as The Duke.
We don't want to reveal everything about this biome, if you want to know in detail what has been added check out the change notes (linked at the bottom of this post), otherwise just go play and enter those portals!
New Tribe: Pale Masks
Who are these people? Can you trust them?
The Pale Masks are creepy occupiers who are related to the fog, spending their lives travelling through the corrupted biome. They are itinerant until they decide to settle down on an island, displacing the islanders who lived there before. They wear masks with wide smiles at all times. Exposure to the fog has left them fog-infected, with purple veins sometimes visible under their skin. Who knows what they look like behind their masks?
Additional content
New enemy: Tyrannosaurus Rex
New recruitable character: Stygimoloch
New recruitable character (temporary, will join you for one expedition only): Zouave Veteran
New item: a cute truffle hog named “Joobee” (thanks to everyone who sent a naming suggestion!)
Various other new items
And there's more!
We've added a Hall of Fame where you'll be able to see information about your past expeditions in both Campaign Mode and Director Mode. It's accessible from the main menu and the Tavern.
Last but not least, we made some changes to the way weekly Club Competitions work, let us know your thoughts!
We hope you'll enjoy this update and rest assured, we're not done yet! There will be more content updates coming in the upcoming months...
If you'd like to support us please tell your friends about the game, ask your favourite streamers to play it and if you encounter any issues, you can submit them using the Bug! button in Options screen.
We're excited to inform you that the first Curious Expedition 2 post-launch content update is coming on Friday, May 21st, and it's going to be a real big one! We don't want to reveal everything right now, but here's some of the things you can expect to find:
A new game mode where you'll embark on a chain of expeditions in order to achieve as much fame as possible, bringing back some of the roguelike elements of the first Curious Expedition.
A new biome, chaotic and unfriendly, offering new opportunities for those who know what they're looking for.
A new masked tribe, related to the fog.
Lots of new events, locations, enemies, recruitable characters and items to discover.
This will be a free update for all owners of the game.
As you've probably heard, since the 1.0 release we've been busy working on new content and on a new game mode for Curious Expedition 2. We've been doing some playtesting already and are now looking for more players to join and give us their feedback.
In order to participate you need to own the game already, but besides that we don't have other requirements. It's not necessary to have completed the campaign.
If you're interested and would like to help please join our Discord server and follow the instructions in the #announcements channel. The playtesting phase is now over, thanks to everyone who participated!
We need your help! We're currently busy working on new content for Curious Expedition 2, such as the truffle hog you see pictured above, which is going find different items by digging around the map. But we have a problem: we don't know what to name it!
Please share your name ideas by commenting on this post or on our Discord server in the #namethishog channel — if your suggestion is picked we'll add you to the special thanks in the game and send you some merchandise (plus Steam keys of both games if you don't have them already).
Oh, one more thing: Curious Expedition 2 is currently 15% off!
Today's update should improve the game's framerate on larger maps in particular that some users were experiencing. If you had a laggy framerate in the late-game, check it out now and let us know if it's an improvement!
There's also a couple of balancing changes, and a number of fixes to cases where you could get stuck in some maps. Those were fixed based on your Bug Reports, which are very helpful as they include your savegame and log files when you send them in-game. So thanks, and keep them coming!

Today's patch has includes a change to the Cartography ability that's shared by the Cartographer and Seeker. We love the Cartography playstyle that revolves around exploring the entire map using items like the Sextant and Theodolite - but both our internal stats and your feedback showed that the fame you could get from the maps created was significantly higher than that for the other Leader classes. Those classes now should be more in line with the fame-generating abilities of the other class-specific abilities.
There are also a number of bug fixes in this update, including a fix for bad performance that some players experienced on larger maps. We've also fixed a few issues where important locations could only be reached via the fog, which was often pretty unfair, as well as a number of problems when using a Gamepad. Check out the full patch notes below. Keep your bug reports coming as always, using the Bug Report button in the Settings menu - thanks!
And finally, in case you missed it, we recently updated the CE2 FAQ with some answers for the common questions about the state of the game and our plans for the future - check it out on the Steam forums.
Changes
Significantly reduced the Fame increase for Cartography at higher levels to bring the Cartographer and Seeker more in line with the Fame generation potential of other explorers
Slightly reduced the Fame bonus from the Seeker's Cartography ability relative to the cartographer's, to differentiate them more
Reduced the amount of items for sale in the Shady Dealer's initial sale, to make it prohibitively expensive to get a full set of equipment so early in the game
The game will now load the backup savegames that it creates automatically if there's no non-backup savegame for that slot
Finding the ship in Act 3 part 3 now uses the Compass instead of Gimbal so you can find it eventually
Fighting Salamanders in Act 3 Part 2 now grants standing with the Moles, rather than reducing it
Added sounds for cooking raw fish and quail
Made Totem Stick description slightly more explicit about what it does.
Bug Fixes
Fixed bad performance on the map in large maps and in particular Act 3 Part 3

Fixed losing map focus after using Weather Balloons with controller
If you were affected by the issue where you got a "Your Trek Perished" game-over screen after a successful combat, you might be able to restore a backup savegame from before the combat and continue your campaign. Check out your savegame folder at "C:/Users/<username>/AppData/LocalLow/Maschinen-Mensch/Curious Expedition 2/user" (replacing <username> with your windows username). You should see some files that end with the '.bak' extension - remove that extension and load the savegame, it should be from before the combat. Our apologies to anyone affected!
Bug Fixes
Fixed getting a gameover screen after using an ability in combat that targets all allies and applies a buff, while mounted
Blocked the village rest council funeral event from firing while you have a village-related quest
Probably the biggest change for today's patch is that the loyalty loss that you get when dismissing a character during an expedition no longer happens if the character being dismissed was only recently recruited. Hopefully this should prevent the frustration when you recruit more characters than you can have and are forced to dismiss one - now you can always dismiss the most recently recruited and not suffer the rest of your party being rather upset.
Other than that, we've hopefully fixed the remaining issues with mounting characters in combat, and some issues that prevented you from completing certain expeditions sometimes. Check out the full change list below - and thanks as always for your bug reports, they're very helpful: keep them coming with the bug reporting button in the settings menu in-game.

Unkillable characters such as Malin will no longer be affected by the 'Jungle Rot'
Plateau "Climb Cost" display in the infobox shows the cost as modified by perks like "Climber"
You may now have multiple Nagual trek members
You can't cleanse Naguals while they are in animal form
Added more Malin specific music tracks to the game

Lunar New Year 2021 is starting on Friday, and in terms of the Chinese zodiac animal it's going to be the Year of the Ox. When we found out about this a while ago we immediately knew this would be a fantastic opportunity for a special hat reward for this week's Club Competition. So here it is, the Heavenly Ox (which is actually more of a mask than a hat):
Club Competition FAQ
Is this hat providing any advantages while playing the game? No, all hats which are rewarded as part of the weekly Club Competition are purely cosmetic, they don't affect your in-game abilities in any way.
When is this Club Competition running? The Club Competition has already started and will end on February 16th at 11am CET.
What is the goal of the current Club Competition? The goal is to find baby dinosaurs. Go on expeditions and look out for dinosaur eggs, carry the eggs around and wait until they hatch. Any newborn baby dinosaur will get your club a point once you finish the expedition. While the prehistoric islands which are unlocked in 1889 most certainly have some dinosaur eggs to find, there is also a chance to find them elsewhere in the game.
What do I have to do in order to win the hat? First of all, in order to participate you need to visit the Royal Avalon Society or the Taishi Academy in Paris and select Join Competition. This option will only be unlocked after completing Act I and reaching the year 1887 in the game for the first time. Once the Club Competition ends, if the Explorer Club you joined is the one that has found the most baby dinosaurs, you will automatically receive the hat.
What happens if the Explorer Club I joined doesn't win the competition? As long as you joined the Club Competition and found at least 1 baby dinosaur, you will be able to purchase the hat (in exchange for 20 tickets) until February 23rd at 11am CET. After this date, you will not be able to purchase the hat anymore.
Can I switch to a different Explorer Club while the Club Competition is running? No, once you joined one of the Explorer Clubs for the Club Competition, you won't be able to switch to a different Explorer Club until the competition has ended.
