With the launch of Chernobylite’s Season 3, you received a surprise from us in the form of a new weapon - the legendary Soviet-made pistol - Makarov. It looks inconspicuous, but with some modifications it can become a deadly piece of equipment. And we wouldn't be ourselves if we didn't add some magic to it ;)
Makarov, apart from the fact that it has universal design and is still produced today, also has an interesting history. In July 1945, shortly after World War II, a competition for a new service pistol was announced in the Soviet Union to replace the Tokarev TT-33 pistol and Nagant M1895 revolver used so far. The new pistol was intended primarily for self-defense, which meant that it had to be lighter and more handy. The above-mentioned pistols did not meet these conditions.
Several engineers took part in the competition. Among them was a novice constructor Nikolay Fyodorovich Makarov. Instead of building a pistol for an existing cartridge in Soviet inventory, Makarov was inspired by the WWII design of the German Walther PP. The Luftwaffe had rejected this pistol design a few years earlier due to its poor accuracy.
The Makarov pistol, unveiled in April 1948, experienced 20 times less malfunctions than competing pistol designs from Baryshev and Sevryugin. After many major design changes and corrections, in December 1951 the pistol was formally adopted under the name "9mm Makarov Pistol" or "PM". There were numerous arguments behind his choice in the competition, incl. simplicity in use (it had few moving parts), economy and ease of production. Mass production started a year later and has been continuously improved since then.
The Makarov pistol remained in service with the Soviet army and police until the end of the USSR in 1991. Although in 2003 it was formally replaced in the service by Yarygin PYa, until 2016 a large number of Makarov pistols were still used in the Russian military and police. To this day, Makarov is a popular service pistol of many Eastern European republics and former Soviet countries.
We looked through many of your comments on Steam and on our social media, and we came to the following conclusion: Gate of Madness is giving you a hard time. We warned you several times, but you didn’t believe us :P
But have no fear! We aren’t heartless monsters that will leave you alone to face such a cruel fate. That's why we've decided to prepare this really short Gate of Madness survival guide. However, don’t think it will make the game easier. Yes, we will provide a few tips, but how you use them - that’s entirely up to you.
1. Stealth is NOT an option, it’s a MUST
Face-to-face confrontation is something you must avoid at all costs. The opponents are much tougher, and the fight has an additional impact on Igor's psyche - it will gradually decrease, and it will not be possible to restore it to its original level. Even with alcohol! This means constantly juggling with food and medications which are very, very scarce. So when you go on a trip, you have to get used to constantly squatting in the bushes. And if you get noticed, it might be wiser to run away as far as you can.
2. Plan and add up your resources meticulously
You won't find a lot of resources on the map. In fact, you'll be lucky if you find more than you have fingers in one hand. Therefore, store everything that you collect in a cupboard, for example. If you want to create or build something, first try to answer the question: what do I need at the moment? Don't waste resources unnecessarily! In addition, it is worth training with your companions collecting resources in the field (Mikhail) and saving materials needed to expand the base or upgrade weapons (Tarakan).
3. Play Bob the Builder
The base is in a deplorable condition from the very beginning of the game. The stats glow red when the threshold is first crossed. And as you well know, the condition of the base has an impact on the health and well-being of your companions. That is why it is worth going on a few trips, gathering as many resources as possible and starting to slowly rebuild the base to a usable condition. It is important to do this before recruiting more people. It will already be hard to keep one person alive, let alone a whole crew. And we don’t mention that their morale is also low, so... You have to roll up your sleeves and go to work, because your companions will run away/die before you know it.
These are the really basic rules that you should know. We have no choice but to wish you good luck!
This week has been extremely exciting for us for two reasons.
Firstly, we've officially launched the Halloween sale! Chernobylite Enhanced Edition and almost all DLCs are available for purchase at a discount of -40%!
For those who don't want to buy everything separately, we’ve also prepared another offer: Chernobylite Deluxe Edition, which is the full game + DLC bundle at a price of -55% lower!
A real treat for those who haven't had the chance to play our game yet. But hurry up, you only have until November 1st to take advantage of this offer.
Secondly, an equally important event is the premiere of Chernobylite’s Season 3: Green Walls. We promised you new content throughout the year, and we kept our word. This time we give you another package with a new map, new weapon and a new gameplay mode, plus additional fixes and optimizations that you asked for.
The new map, i.e. Cooling Towers - an unfinished building (obviously), which construction has been suspended due to the disaster at the Chernobyl power plant. Now you have the opportunity to visit it in person and admire the unfinished structure from the inside. Literally.
New weapon, namely, the Soviet Makarov. At first glance, an inconspicuous automatic pistol that has appeared here and there in various games. However, in Chernobylite, this gun can be an extremely effective weapon, especially if it’s subjected to appropriate modifications.
The new mode is called Gate of Madness. We took the difficulty level to (literally) the next level because we felt Insane was way too easy. We've added so many variables to tweak the difficulty level that perhaps the next step would be to replace the "New Game" button with "Game Over" button.
And of course, don't forget about one more thing: paid Zone Bard DLC that adds radio to your base. Thanks to this, you can play music in your base that suits your mood. Actually, to mark this occasion, we added some new, previously unpublished songs.
We hope you have fun. We are already preparing the next package of new stuff for you, which will be released during Season 4. When? You will find out in due time ;)

Watch the trailer for the latest free content update for Chernobylite, Season 3: Green Walls. If you haven’t yet, try out the paid DLC Zone Bard and select music tracks from the game you want to listen to yourself.
The latest free content update Season 3: Green Walls makes the game even more challenging with new hardcore game mode Gate of Madness. In addition, it added a new area, Cooling Towers, and a new weapon: the legendary Soviet Makarov gun.
The next, already third major update in 2022 is now available to everyone! In the latest pack you will find a new mode that significantly increases the difficulty level, a new map and a weapon that can be modified at will. Additionally, we also have a surprise for music lovers.
New content:
Gate of Madness - a new game mode that significantly increases the difficulty level (note: available only to those who have finished the game). If you thought Insane was difficult, we have bad news for you. Only one save game available. Immediate death with insufficient chernobylite available. Madness, as a new stat indicator, permanently lowering the hero's mental condition, lower morale of companions or the inability to obtain weapons from killed enemies. These are just some of the difficulty-enhancing changes.
Brute Force - a new weapon. The Makarov is a classic Russian automatic pistol that, after upgrading, can be used as a type of submachine gun. And barrel modifications will give the shells special properties.
Cooling Towers! - a new map. The power plant cooling towers are two unfinished concerte giants close to Reactor 5 and 6 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Meant to evaporate the cooling water from two reactors, they were never completed as the disaster stopped all works on the site in 1986. The radiation level around them remains high even today. Now you will have the opportunity to visit this spot in person.
We have updated FSR to 2.1 (for DX12) and DLSS to 2.3 version, and added an option to control sharpness in the game while using FSR 2.0! But these are not the only changes. Check out "Fixes and optimization" for more information ;)
Paid content:
Zone Bard
Expansion of the original soundtrack with possibility to control the music in the base. We add a series of new guitar musical tracks with the possibility to interactively switch between them in the base using a playing device. Anytime in the base player can approach the radio and play the selected music track, including the old and brand new songs. Go back to the base, turn on the radio and enjoy the music you choose.
This DLC will be available for Early Access players for free!
New content is not the only thing we worked on. There are also a few fixes and changes:
Optimization:
We have updated FSR to 2.1 (for DX12) and DLSS to 2.3 version
Some of you suggested that having a control over sharpness in the game while using FSR 2.0 would be a good thing, so we added this option - you can adjust it in video settings at any time (applicable for DX12 version)
We fixed possible crash during benchmark session
We expanded information provided in benchmark test summary - now it also mentions FSR, Ray Tracing and DLSS
Sometimes the game was crashing during longer sessions when both FSR and Ray Tracing were turned ON - we made few improvements so it shouldn’t happen anymore
We have fixed small graphical glitches which were visible when using FSR on some versions of Nvidia graphic cards
Bug fixes (major bugs):
VR inception: It’s no longer possible to duplicate “use” interaction on VR machine which resulted in semi-blocker
VR inception: Thanks to your reports, we managed to catch and fix a bug where skills learnt inside VR would block the same ones available in non-VR mode. Thanks!
Jail: Loading saves in specific moments during the Chain Reaction mission resulted in Igor being unable to move. Fear not, you won’t be stuck in jail anymore. The fix will work even if you use the same save
Inventory: Some of you managed to get over 1000 chernobylite crystals and in such a scenario, quest items couldn’t be added to inventory which resulted in a blocker. We were impressed by you dedication and such amounts and decided to increase the crystals’ stack to make sure you won’t be blocked
Bug fixes (minor bugs):
Localization: Thanks to your keen eye for details, we got reports with spelling mistakes/typos in various texts. We fixed most of them. Once again - thank you!
Localization: Czech and French languages were missing in some dialogs - they are now added and displaying correctly
Timeline: It’s no longer possible to fall under terrain after sneaking into specific spot
Ray Tracing: We fixed few minor visual bugs
That's all for today! Have fun with your new content, and remember that it's not over. In a few months, the next and last big pack of new content awaits you.
Also remember, if you have any questions or problems, do not hesitate to contact us on the Steam forum - we’ll be there to help you! :)

Season 3 is just around the corner, so we're continuing our mission of revealing (not too much) what we have prepared for you in the next update. In the previous report, we wrote about a brand new, even more twisted difficulty level. Today we present you with a completely new location, although some of you may have seen it before ;)
The power plant cooling towers are two unfinished concrete giants close to Reactor 5 and 6 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Meant to evaporate the cooling water from two reactors, they were never completed as the disaster stopped all works on the site in 1986. The radiation level around them remains high even today.
This spot has already appeared in our reports before. One of them was in fact a teaser showing the very early progress of work on the new map.
In another report we showed the pictures from our last trip to Chernobyl, which took place at the end of last year. On that occasion, we had the opportunity to see the unfinished towers with our own eyes and collect materials from there that served as references.
The trip to the place where the unfinished towers stand was also the perfect opportunity to explain to you how we collect ambient sounds and how we then implement them into the game. A piece of interesting reading that should be of interest not only to sound design lovers :)
Almost a year has passed since our departure, a lot has changed in our project since then. Soon you will be able to see it for yourself. For now, we're giving you a taste of what you'll see in the latest update.
