Today we’ll be covering the legendary Bismarck! One of the most famous battleships of all time with a fascinating story.

Bismarck: A Battleship for Germany at Rank VII
At a glance:
  • 380 mm (15 inch) guns
  • Strong all-around armor layout
  • High accuracy
  • Limited anti-air protection
Vehicle History

Work on Bismarck began on July 1st 1936 at Blohm & Voss in Kiel, after several years she was launched on February 14th 1939. On May 18th 1941, she was sent out on her maiden voyage to the Atlantic together with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen in Operation Rheinübung. Several days later, the pair would encounter HMS Hood and the new battleship HMS Prince of Wales, along with heavy cruisers Norfolk and Suffolk. Hood as the pride of the Royal Navy was famously sunk by Bismarck after only five salvos, with Prince of Wales able to disengage after several hits.

The sinking of the Hood ignited a fierce pursuit by the entire Home Fleet of the Royal Navy. Despite the victory Bismarck was not unharmed, one of her boilers was in critical condition and she was listing starboard, which forced her to head back towards occupied France for repairs. After an inconsequential attack from the aircraft of HMS Victorious, the British lost contact with Bismarck. Only two days later however, she was detected again by a PBY Catalina. Shortly after her position was relayed, HMS Ark Royal launched several Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers to attack Bismarck, these old biplanes suffered no losses and scored several hits, with the most pivotal being to Bismarck’s rudder.

Unable to sail straight, Bismarck was cornered a British fleet of 2 battleships, 2 heavy cruisers and 8 destroyers. The battleships King George V and Rodney opened fire on Bismarck, which could not fire effectively due to her damaged control systems and crippled handling, rendering her useless. The British battleships fired around 700 shells of their main batteries at Bismarck, with the entire fleet firing around 2,800 shells in total. This onslaught turned the German battleship into a floating wreck within 90 minutes, but still did not sink. After orders were given to attack the German behemoth with torpedoes, it was already listing to the side and the deck was partly under water. At 10:40 on the May 27th Bismarck sank stern first. It’s still highly debated if the ship was ultimately sunk by scuttling from her own crew or from the damage. In 1989 the wreck was found in a depth of 4,800 m.

Introducing Bismarck!

The time has come to talk about Bismarck, perhaps Germany’s most famous ship and one of the most famous in history, ultimately being a true household name. This epic ship is joining the top ranks of the German Bluewater fleet in the next major update, so let’s take a look at what she can do.

First up, let’s talk about the guns! Bismarck is equipped with eight 380 mm guns, known for their high power and accuracy. While they aren’t as large as many contemporary main batteries, their accuracy even at long range is particularly impressive, her reload speed is great too, up to 2.6 rounds per minute — the fastest reload for the caliber!

Interesting: Bismarck gets her iconic name from German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck!

Bismarck can equip four primary shells, AP, and three HE types, regular, base fuse, and timed fuse for anti-aircraft. The AP rounds will be able to punch through just over 700 mm of armor max, with a decent helping of explosive filler. The base fuse HE will also form a nice middle ground between the AP and standard HE, with over 500 mm of penetration and around 32kg of explosive filler! These main caliber guns are complemented by twelve 150 mm guns in six mounts, able to provide shorter range fire against soft targets.

Much like real life, Bismarck is somewhat lacking in regards to anti-air protection, with only a handful of large caliber 105 mm AA guns, and a complement of older, smaller 37 mm and 20 mm cannons — effective in the right circumstances, but lacking the volume of fire necessary to form a strong air defense.

Interesting: Despite her strength, Bismarck’s rudder was disabled by old Swordfish aircraft, allowing the Royal Navy to finish her off.

Like all big ships, Bismarck is very well protected, there’s a lot of detail here but we’ll just give you the quick version! Bismarck is protected by about 320 mm of armor around the belt, the turret face and barbettes are similarly well defended at 360 mm and 340 mm respectively. While Bismarck may not have the thickest armor on paper, its protection is notable as it is very well defended across the board, with few areas that could be considered as pivotal weakspots. Although the standard armor plates are not angled like her contemporaries, the angling of the armored deck provides an extra 110-120 mm of internal protection.

In terms of speed and maneuverability, Bismarck is fairly effective. With a max speed of around 30 knots (56 km/h), this lets her traverse the map quickly. Her turning circle is also surprisingly good, being able to change direction relatively quickly for such a large battleship. This maneuverability is key to the playstyle, adjusting your heading and responding to new threats quickly is vital when cannons are this powerful, so keep this in mind and make sure to keep your armor effective against the enemy!

That’s all for today, thank you for being with us for another blog! Bismarck will be making her way to the German tree in the Leviathans major update, until then, we’ve still got more to share, see you back here soon for more devblogs!

Please note that this vehicle’s characteristics may be changed before it is added to the game.

Commanders!

It wouldn’t be a U.S. Independence Day celebration without new American content and this year’s no exception. However, you might now be thinking, why take a look at it right now when we’re three days into June? Well, there’s a good reason for that, which we’ll explain below. Right now, we’re happy to introduce the newest skin that we will have for you – the Reaver for AbramsX.

Considering the vehicle choice, the skin is not exactly historical in the truest sense of the word. Rather, it is inspired by real vehicles and revolves around a specific theme:

“What would happen if the AbramsX prototype was adopted in U.S. service?”

This particular AbramsX, named “Reaver” by its crew, clearly served in some middle-eastern country.

It’s been painted with the same sand color as other American MBTs but the surface is scratched and worn by heavy use. The crew’s belongings are lying on the back of the turret.

We’ve paid extra attention to detail to make the skin look as realistic as possible and we hope you’ll enjoy it. But that’s not all we’ll have for you.

For the lovers of realism we have a new camouflage from the Reforger 83 family. The Reforger 83 exercise saw many U.S. tanks covered with unconventional camouflages, some of which we already introduced to the game. Like the others, this camouflage was seen on an Abrams MBT belonging to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

And, last not but least, we’ll have some real-life inscriptions that were spotted on various Abrams MBTs across the years. We picked a few cool ones that we thought you’d like.

But the best part? You can get all that by simply playing the game. A new special event called “Operation Liberty” is starting on June 11 and if you play the game every day, you’ll receive the skin on July 4 (and by that time, you’ll have everything else as well). We’ll tell you more about the event’s prizes in the next article.

So saddle up, commanders, because with the new Battle Path coming as well, this summer’s going to be hot. We hope you’ll enjoy this content and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!

Here's the list of what's new if yo don't:

- New spell on sale on shops of the cities: Acidball!

- Now you will be able to buy weapons at shops. No one wants to buy yours, though, because they are used. Maybe at blacksmiths in near future.

- You can now re-enter the city in which you are in, without having to leave. Money is the only limitation for you there.
- Changed the icon on Windows for settings from a musical note to a cog, that is more conventional.
- Minor bugs.

The Pistol - New Main Hand Weapon

New Mechanics

The Pistol is the first new mainhand weapon we’re releasing since the Sword. The Pistol operates with the following mechanics.

Ammo

Each pistol comes with a certain amount of ammo slots. Playing a Shot card consumes one ammo, and once you’ve run out, a Reload card will be added to your hand. The Reload card will stay in your hand until you play it, even after you end your turn. Playing the Reload card replenishes your ammo, and you can play Shot cards once again.

Shot Cards

Shot cards are the Pistol’s attack cards. Every Shot also has a Gripstrike mode, which you can access by switching grips.

Pistol Switch

Once you enter battle with a Pistol equipped, you will find its control element in the bottom left, in place of the Sword’s Heroic Strike. The Pistol icon shows which mode is currently active. The battle starts with the default, normal grip, which is used to play Shot cards. If you click the icon, the barrel grip will become active, and all of your Shot cards will turn over to become Gripstrikes. Toggling between the two modes doesn’t cost any resources and you can do it as often as you want.

Gripstrike

Some shots will have a Gripstrike keyword in their descriptions; these cards will do something special in Gripstrike mode. The rest of the Shots’ Gripstrike mode will default to an 8 (for starter cards) or 10 (non-starter cards) damage melee attack.

Modification

When you play a Modification card, you’ll be able to choose a Shot card from your hand to improve for the rest of the battle.

Bomb

Each Pistol also comes with a set number of Bombs. Bombs stun the target and deal 5 damage to them. The number of bombs you start your battles with will increase as you progress in the run.

Mark

Mark is a new keyword we’re introducing alongside the Pistol; Marking an enemy applies Vulnerability 3 to them. Further attacks to Marked enemies apply an additional Vulnerability 2 to them. Mark cannot be stacked.

Short-ranged

Short-ranged cards can target enemies in the first three positions.

New Features

Damage Preview

Attack cards now show a damage preview when they are selected and you hover over targetable enemies. The values on the preview are calculated for the hovered enemy. AOE attacks will display a damage preview next to every affected enemy’s health bar. The values are (in descending order) the damage you will deal, the crit chance you have against that specific enemy, and then finally the damage you deal if you manage to land a critical hit.

We have also simplified the card design by moving the range and type indicators above the description box for a simpler look and shorter texts.

What are next?

Huge thanks to everyone who helped bring DFDT to life!

This project is doing MUCH better than I thought it would, which means I'll be adding to it to make it even better!

Here's what I have planned:

MAIN PLAN:
  • - I will be swapping up my work hours so that I can focus on clearing out my commission queue!
  • - I not only have a some unfinished commissions, but also I have had a lot of requests for additional slots.
  • - DFDT will still be worked on, just not full time.

DFDT Additions & Fixes:
  • - Achievements! Because it's on Steam, it needs achievements!
  • - Missing cameos! A few cameos got in their forms extremely late, so these will be added post-release.
  • - Dialogue handler overhaul! This is mostly a "me" thing but the dialogue handler needs a serious overhaul.
  • - Ending cutscene polish! I'm not much of an animator so these def. need a third pass.
  • - Controls rebinding! It's there, just commented out since I need to reconfigure it for gamepads as well
  • - More Mari Expressions! The system is there, it just needs more sprites!
  • - Additional levels! Add more variety to your playthrough with RNG-based levels!
  • - New butt sprites! I had originally intended for Hoodie's ass to grow w/ her chest, but didn't have time to make new sprites for it.
  • - New tiddy sprites! Courtesy of BeePunz, I still need to animate these before they can be added.
  • - And plenty of other additional tweaks & bugfixes!

THE BIG ONE: ENDLESS MODE!
  • - This is the big addition :V
  • - This will be a mode unlocked after you complete the "campaign" that will turn the game into a full endless roguelike.
  • - It will take a LOT of work (a month, most likely) but will add even more goodies to the game.

UPCOMING PROJECTS:
  • - fertility_tracker.exe! Currently in the works, this is a short pseudo-horror interactive experience involving, of course, massive bits! :V
  • - Turn the Lights On! This is another short horror game and my first major foray into both Godot and 3D game dev.
