Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Games are, generally, not very good at depicting mental illness. Games are atrocious at tackling a lot of topics, to be fair, but this one is surprisingly prevalent: sanity meters, psycho villains, dozens of games set in insane asylums. This is probably why so many people leapt at the chance to praise Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice for its considered portrayal of a tricky subject.

Not just critics and fans either. The developers themselves seem to regard Hellblade as something of a landmark achievement for combating the stigma surrounding mental health, marketing it mainly based on the subject matter - so much so that it seemed inevitable people would have to give it points for the effort. And I mean people really praised it. The BAFTA game awards put together a whole new category for it, "Game Beyond Entertainment", a title which just reeks of pretentiousness.

Slow down. Yes it's damn refreshing to see a sensitive subject handed with care, but there was such a rush to congratulate the game for being fair and accurate, I'm not sure many took the time to see what it actually had to say about mental health. Hellblade's depiction of mental illness feels genuine and resonates with me for sure. It's a compelling and - for someone who suffers from hallucinations and depression - empowering game, but Senua's battle through a haunting norse fantasy world is difficult to hold up as an insight into what it's like to live with these issues.

The Vikings have long ago invaded the coasts of pop culture on their dragon-headed longships and carved out their own Danelaw in the realm of video games. In recent years, they ve grown even bolder, taking over most genres from RTS to RPG, classic point and click adventure to action, with an utter disregard towards distinctions between AAA and indie. They ve settled in Hellblade and Frostrune, Dead in Vinland and The Witcher 3, God of War and Crusader Kings 2, and of course, The Banner Saga trilogy. Luckily, it s easy to spot a Viking. Horned helmets, mead-filled drinking horns, bloody battle axes and grim miens are a dead giveaway. When in doubt, tempt the suspected Viking with loot, then wait and see whether or not they can resist the urge to pillage.

“More than once during Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice I had to fight the urge to rip the headphones from my ears,” Samuel Horti wrote in his Hellblade review, noting that “as a portrayal of how harrowing it is to live with psychosis it undoubtedly succeeds.” Yeah yeah, but what if you could jam your eyeballs inside psychosis too? Now you may, as developers Ninja Theory today added official support for VR goggles for free. Even if cybergoggs did work with my peepers, I think I might steer clear of jacking into Celtic hallucinations. Though I spent much of last night hugging the toilet while drifting in and out of sleep, so perhaps I’ve already lived it.

It's Indie Mega Week at the Humble Store right now, which - as you may have gleaned from the name - is a big celebration of some of the best indie games around, with the range seeing discounts of up to 90 per cent for the time being.

There are pages of stuff on offer in the Indie Mega Week sale range, ranging from smaller and more obscure titles to some of the biggest indie games released in recent years, and some soundtracks and DLC packs are even thrown in for good measure.

Some of the most notable games on offer include 11-bit Studios' recent suffer-sim Frostpunk, which is down to 21.24 / $25.49, current Twitch favourite House Flipper for 13.16 / $16.99, the unrelentingly addictive Dead Cells for 17.59 / $19.99, and the closet thing we'll get to a Left 4 Dead 3 anytime soon, Warhammer: Vermintide 2 for 15.40 / $20.09.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Ninja Theory has announced that its stunning action-adventure Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is making the move to VR, and will come to Oculus Rift and Vive on July 31st.

Senua's Sacrifice released last August on PS4 and PC (and this April on Xbox One), and delivered a further evolution of the narrative-heavy, third-person hack-and-slash-style adventures that have defined Ninja Theory's output over the years.

It's a solidly designed experience, with exploration, puzzles, and combat strong enough to carry the momentum of its ambitious narrative - but, truthfully, it's the game's frequently breathtaking visuals and powerfully depicted themes that prove most memorable.

If the games we play are anything to go by, the depths of hell are one of humankind's favourite destinations when it comes to travels of the mind. Few fantasy RPGs or horror games could be considered complete without at least a quick excursion into the domain of demons and sinners. And what better place to conclude your game than hell itself? What better villains to fight than the citizens of Pandemonium? Hell has found a steady home in many kinds of games, and its popularity shows no sign of abating.

As one great furnace flamed, yet from those flames

summer sale header

The old quote is wrong: neither death nor taxes are, it seems to me, as terrifyingly certain as the Steam Summer Sale. Yes, once more we can add to the heap that is our backlog by buying games for, what, five quid, on average? But there are so many to choose from that it’s easy to get flustered, so who better than the staff of RPS to hand-pick the best ones for your consideration (rhetorical question; do not answer)?

Check out the full list below for a mix of games that should suit all pockets and tastes.
