The Grand Canyon VR Experience - Illusionweaver


We just rolled out a new content update, introducing our new hotspot system!

Some of the changes include:
  • NEW Hotspot: The campsite: relax at the crackling campfire.*
  • NEW Hotspot: The overlook: enjoy magnificent views from the canyon rim.*
  • more realistic cloud formations
  • various environment tweaks.
  • added more detail to the world.
  • various small bug fixes.
*motion controllers are required for this feature

The Grand Canyon VR Experience - Illusionweaver
Today we achieved a huge milestone for this project: we made it out of early access!

Our goal from the start was to see if we can create an outdoor nature inspired environment and make it immersive enough so it feels like a real world. Turns out that visiting nature in VR has a similar relaxing effect compared to the real thing so if you need a quick escape from the real world: The Grand Canyon VR Experience is waiting for you!

A big shout-out to our team of awesome developers who did an amazing job creating this unique experience and will continue to maintain and improve this world for you all to enjoy. I also want to thank the community members who gave us tons of valuable feedback during our early access phase, this was tremendously helpful for us!

Some of the changes include:
  • NEW: Some new animals where spotted in the Canyon, can you find them all?
  • various environment tweaks.
  • added more detail to the world.
  • faster loading times.
  • various small bug fixes.

Hi everyone!
We just released a major new patch with lots of exciting new changes.
We listened to the feedback of the community and focused our efforts into offering a more polished interactive relaxing kayak ride through the beautiful canyon. We hope you enjoy the rides and are looking forward to your feedback!

TIPS FOR MAXIMUM IMMERSION
  • Place a comfy chair in the middle of your play space
  • Place an oscillating fan in front of you
  • Make the room as dark as possible to avoid unwanted light
  • Put on some of your favorite music!

Some of the changes include:
  • NEW:Oculus Touch support
  • NEW:Completely reworked transparent water
  • NEW:Additional animals have been spotted in the canyon
  • NEW:Improved rock formations and other environment enhancements
  • NEW:Switched the project to forward renderer for much crisper visuals

Hi everyone! We just released a new patch with plenty of bug fixes and some new features!

Note about the water shader

We finally were able to identify the bug that is causing the water to flicker under certain angles. It turns out it is an issue deep inside the VR rendering pipeline of Unreal Engine. Epic is working on a fix for us so as soon as they release it we'll issue a hot fix. In the meantime you can cycle between transparent / opaque water with “pagedown”.

Some of the changes include:
  • NEW: Our first of many physics props is enabled => you can now throw, drag, push, move & hurl some small rocks around in the world.
  • NEW: HRTF fly, you can't see it, but boy you sure can hear it!
  • NEW: The pier : ideal for hopping on and off the paddle board!
  • NEW:Self-driving kayak tours is now also available for Vive users (sit down on the floor in front of a fan for maximum immersion!).
  • NEW: Oculus users can now also teleport to various destinations in the world.
  • various environment tweaks.
  • you should now find a "chill area" at most hotspots that line up with a typical desk chair height -> move your real life chair into position so it lines up with a virtual rock, chair, pier. Take a seat and let the chilling commence...
  • lots of new sounds!
  • We tweaked the paddling physics based on your feedback.
  • F key displays frame-rate .
  • various small bug fixes.

We just released patch 1.61, adding gamepad/keyboard support & various bugfixes:

Patchnotes
  • Fixed an issue where some users couldn't load the application
  • Added gamepad & keyboard support for the self driving kayak tour (see below)
  • Some minor performance improvements for low & medium setting
  • Some minor bugfixes

Gamepad & keyboard controls :
  • Enter Kayak : P or A button
  • Enter Campsite: O or B button
  • Recenter: ENTER or Back Button
  • Flashlight: Left Ctrl or Y
  • Speed up: Triggers or W/S or Up arrow/Down arrow

We also started working on the next big content update, so stay tuned for more cool stuff in the coming months!

Hi everyone! We just released the June content update. This is a large update with lots of improvements and new features.

NOTE ON PERFORMANCE :
As you all know VR is very performance hungry so building a large living world like this is not an easy task. There is still a lot of room for performance improvements (especially for the Vive) so the [high] and [epic] graphic settings are highly experimental.
However, with [space] you can bring up a menu to tweak various graphic settings to your liking:

  • [Oculus]full remote support to control kayak, speed, flashlight and teleport from campsite to the tour kayak.
  • various bug fixes

Known issues:

  • If you paddle with two paddles at the same time, only one will rumble
  • Using the flashlight at daytime reduces performance
  • If you get stuck with the paddle board please let us know where so we can fix it. Holding down the grip buttons on both controllers teleports you back to the campsite
  • Vive users can hit [p] to jump into the tour kayak if you don't want to paddle (we will have a more elegant solution for this soon)

Also we encountered a bug that makes our cool translucent water flicker at certain angles, we are working with Epic to roll out a fix in the coming weeks. In the meantime we changed the water to a more basic opaque version but you can toggle between the two with [pagedown].

We have been hard at work integrating a wide variety of improvements to The Grand Canyon VR Experience. Today we wanted to give you a little peek into the next content update coming later this month.


the new campsite acts as your base where you start all your adventures from...

Some of the new features to look forward to:
  • new starting area : the campsite!
  • completely revamped dynamic sky & volumetric clouds system
  • several graphical improvements
  • several performance improvements
  • more control over your graphic settings
  • sound occlusions & HRTF 3D positional sound
  • completely revamped controller & inventory system
  • discover the first hot-spots where you can disembark your boat & explore by foot

The Grand Canyon VR Experience - Illusionweaver
HI everybody, we pushed out a quick hot-fix that squashes a bug causing certain people to have unresponsive game pad / keyboard controls since the upgrade to Oculus run-time 1.3. If you still have issues with the game pad, you can use the following keyboard commands to change the speed of the kayak:

  • arrow up/down : change kayak speed (alternative : w/s)
  • space : reset orientation

Hi everyone!
With the latest patch we added experimental support for the Oculus Rift HMD. When you launch the Grand Canyon VR Experience using an Oculus Rift you have the choice between two launch options :

1) launch in STEAM VR mode
2) launch in OTHER VR mode

both options should work, but make sure you follow these steps to enable STEAM VR on your oculus rift.

If you prefer to use the Oculus runtime, make sure you are running the latest version from the Oculus download page and make sure to enable unknown sources under settings in your Oculus store.

If you already bought the Grand Canyon VR Experience on STEAM but you would like to unlock it on the Oculus Store, send us an email with your steam username (support@immersiveent.com) and we will deliver you a Oculus store key.

If you have a DK2, make sure you upgrade from runtime 0.8 to the latest version available on the Oculus download page.

If you have an HTC Vive then everything should work out of the box , happy kayaking! ːsteamhappyː
