Sessions that count towards the tournament: ːbh2coinːːbh2coinːːbh2coinːːbh2coinːːbh2coinːːbh2coinːːbh2coinːːbh2coinː (8)

For each win, players receive additional points that depend on the strength of the opponents over whom they have won. Important: your tournament points will continue to increase with the increase in the tournament score of your past opponents, over whom you prevailed – even if you already have reached the limit of sessions for the tournament. What this means is that the tournament is never over for you as long as your previously conquered opponents continue to play, and win.

During this tournament, regular rating points will be frozen for all the players. Your tournament sessions will NOT affect your regular rating.

Players get tournament points for the first 8 sessions played in the tournament on each of the servers. Any subsequent sessions won't give any tournament points, and won't increase the number of defeated opponents who give additional points. Nonetheless, victories of all opponents who were defeated in the first 8 sessions will affect your final tournament rating.

PRIZE FUND:

Awarded: Top 10 players on each of the servers. In addition to the main prize fund, every player who finishes all 8 tournament sessions receives a special bonus player icon “Facepalm” (only if it has not been received before)!

Gremlins, Inc. - Qfasa
The big Summer Update for Gremlins, Inc. is here, and as usual it brings new content and features – as well as fixes and re-balancing changes.

But before we jump into the details of the update, we wanted to share this information:

ːmaliceː At the end of 2019, we changed our server cluster in Singapore. A couple of months later, we discovered certain connectivity issues with the new server, and we did our best to fix them.

We are aware that these efforts weren't entirely successful and some players, mostly from mainland China and certain regions of Japan, still might experience lags when they play the game on the Singapore server.

We've spent the last 3 months trying dozens of options for addressing this issue, and we have no intention to leave it "as is" – we will continue working on a solution.

In the near future, we will be testing other geographical locations to see if moving the server from Singapore to another city could improve player experience in Asia.

ːhypnoheartː We are thankful for your patience and appreciate your understanding, and we hope to find the solution that will improve the experience of those players who currently may still experience lags.

– and now to the changes that this update brings to the game:

NEW FEATURES

Results of the previous seasons

Before: When a new season begins, the rating of all players resets without the possibility to see any previous results (personal or overall).

After: The results of all previous monthly seasons (starting from January 2019, when the very first one was played) are now available in the game. The ultimate ladder now shows not only the results of the current season, but also the results of the previous seasons as well.

Reason: the ability to check your (or overall) previous results not only is very convenient, but also shows the names of the players who were the most successful in the game in the past seasons.

More control over your custom multiplayer session lobby

Before: When a player creates a lobby for a custom multiplayer session, anyone can join it. When someone joins but you don't want to play with them, you can kick them out of your lobby. However, nothing prevents them from re-joining again immediately.

After: If you kick someone out of your lobby, they won't be able to come back. The restriction only works for this particular lobby and applies for as long as the lobby exists. Just be careful – if you kick someone out by mistake, in order for them to join your session again, you will have to create a new lobby.

Reason: Such behaviour can be used to harass or annoy players in the multiplayer lobby, and we would like to protect them from such experiences.

NEW CONTENT

Some changes are invisible, such as optimisation of the server code. Some changes take a long time, such as looking for the alternative to the Singapore server cluster that would provide faster connection to players from Japan and from China. But some changes are much more obvious, such as new cards that arrive to the game with every major update!

New card: "Charity"

Location: The Bank
Cost: Free
Type: Normal
Movement points: 3
Get: -10 income, -ːmaliceː5.
Number of these cards in the default deck: 1

"A charitable donation: the means of securing a discount for future bribes” – from the gremlin vocabulary.

Reason: the idea of a card that allows using income as a resource that can be spent on something else (in this case: malice reduction) was in our heads for quite some time and now it makes its way into the game.

New card: "Cold deck"

Location: The Casino
Cost: Free
Type: Secret
Movement points: 4
Get: +ːmaliceː2
Number of these cards in the default deck: 1

Special rule:

Look at 6 new cards. You can swap any of them with any cards on your hand. You can play another Casino card in this turn.

All cards in this deck are different, no matter from which side you look at them.

Reason: we want to "boost" the Casino a bit more with a card that can be played in multiple ways: just for hand management; as a part of a prepared combo where you already have 2 Casino cards when you visit the location; or as a part of a lucky combo in which you find your second Casino card at the top of the deck.

RE-BALANCING CHANGES

As you may know, when we developed Gremlins, Inc. in 2013-2015, we put little thought into tools and architecture that would allow us to quickly mod the game. Later, we were busy adding major features and game content. And only this year we finally put serious thought and effort into making the game really moddable.

The first part of the moddability project is done by now: our own team is able to quickly modify every card in the deck, in addition to the composition of the deck itself. This finally (finally!) allows us to listen to the community feedback and quickly implement changes that make the most sense every month, together with the change of the ranked session rules.

We start with re-balancing of 17 cards. The changes are described below in detail. These changes are based on the data of how the cards are used in the game across more than 60,000 recent sessions, as well as on the community feedback and discussions on the game's forums and its Discord server.

We would also like to express our gratitude to our Pillars of Community players, whose feedback and recommendations were extremely helpful during the process of re-balancing.

Election Campaign

Reason: we want to weaken the impact of this card and to make it more useful for movement. At the same time, the card is now cheaper.

Riskomatic-30

Reason: we want to make this card a bit more effective, since in its current state it doesn't see as much play as we would like it to have.

Contraband

Reason: we want to make moving with this card less punishing. The card, while very useful in some circumstances, has a very situational effect. In its current state it often becomes a burden that players have no reason to play, but also don't want to use to move because of the cost. We'd like to change that.

Coup d'etat

Reason: to reduce the number of situations where this card is played completely unexpectedly. Considering how impactful this card is, it shouldn't happen for free, and completely "out of the blue".

Judgement Day

Reason: we want to reduce the impact of this card. Without the extra turn, it still produces a significant outcome.

Undercutting the Competition

Reason: we want to make the card a bit more punishing for those who play it, as it currently gets a lot of play despite its criminal status and a relatively high cost of 3 votes.

An Artifact

Reason: we want to adjust the deck that grew much bigger with all the recent updates, and at this point contains many more cards that can be played at the Plant during one session.

A Bag of Money

Reason: we want to reduce the impact of this card as it gets a lot of play. As more cards have been added to the game that give additional votes, this card can take a little nerf that would make it less popular.

Jurors for hire

Reason: we want to make this card more efficient as it isn't played as often as we'd like it to be played.

Robbery!

Reason: we want to reduce the impact of this card, which is currently so high that players almost always keep it on hand in order to get the money – despite its criminal status. Initially, we wanted to reduce the outcome of the card by $100 but after receiving players' feedback we decided to start with $50 instead.

The Evil Statue

Reason: we want to make this card more attractive for being used to move. Initially it was done through its movement buff but after additional consideration the card was changed in a different way.

Misappropriation

Reason: we want to reduce the impact of this card, and to slightly increase the punishment for playing it for action – because in its current state this is one of the most played cards in the game.

Toxic Waste

Reason: we want to make it easier for players to get rid of this card from their hand, so this would happen more often and the card wouldn't be kept on hand until played for action.

Diablerie

Reason: we want to make it easier for players to get rid of this card from their hand, so this would happen more often and the card wouldn't be kept on hand until played for action.

A Prank

Reason: we want to to reduce the impact of this card, which is so strong already that even the complete removal of the bonus probably won't change its popularity too much. But we decided to start with the reduction of the bonus first, and to see if a further nerf is needed.

A Quest from Dariol

Reason: we want to make this card a bit more popular, and have it played more often.

The Common Fund

Reason: we want to give this card a slightly negative effect to compensate for the fact that the player also receives a free score point.

OTHER CHANGES

Only the owners of the game can now join ranked/tournament sessions

Before: Ranked sessions are open to everyone for as long as they can launch the game and don't have a ban for a Fair Play Rules violation.

After: In order to participate in ranked sessions, you also have to own the game on your own Steam account.

Reason: free access to the game during free weekends or with the Steam Family Sharing feature is nice, but there are major downsides to it:

1) some of these players don't have any reason to care about the result of a session and often leave it early or purposefully ruin it for the opponents. While we allow the freedom of behaviour in ranked sessions, it doesn't mean that we don't want to reduce the number of such cases. And those who care about the result, often do so for a wrong reason, which brings the second downside;

2) free access can be easily exploited in pursuit of dishonest goals. Players who are banned from the ranked mode for the violation of Fair Play Rules can create a new account and be back in ranked sessions literally in minutes, which doesn't help improving other players' experience at all. This also opens up a lot of possibilities for team play where the same two players use multiple accounts to avoid restrictions of matchmaking.

Therefore, we made the decision to limit what is available to the users who don't own the game. They are more than welcome to play against bots or play custom sessions with anyone they want – no limits applied there.

Standard dice-roller changes

Before: when you roll a die with the standard dice-roller, the final number can be predicted by the look at the initial value, and the lever animation is quite jerky.

After: the final number won't be known until the dice-roller stops, and the lever animation is now smoother than before.

Reason: both changes are made with regard to the feedback that we have received after the Spring update.

Illustrations adjustments

Before: the contrast, brightness, and saturation of some of the cards were not in line with the others.

After: the contrast, brightness, and saturation of all cards are brought to the same level.

Reason: after years of development and adding multiple new cards with new and unique illustrations, we have noticed that their coloring became less consistent. It wasn't awful but it was noticeable enough for us to decide that it is time to give all cards an overhaul in order to reduce the inconsistency.

FIXES

  • Fixed an issue: if the special rule “A Box of Secrets” is used during a session with bots, some cards would disappear from the deck in the course of the session. This was an absolutely bizarre issue that existed for a very long time and was discovered only recently, but now it's not the case anymore.

  • Fixed a rare issue: if a player experiences heavy lags, it is possible that for the opponents their movement on the board would appear chaotic and absolutely impossible. This happened due to sync issues caused by lags and delays between the player's client and the server, and is now fixed.

  • Fixed an issue: If the last Jail event was declined, the timer stays on the screen until it ends or until the next turn of that player begins. It's not the case anymore and the timer will disappear as soon as the action is completed.

Gremlins, Inc. - Qfasa
On April 28, Gremlins, Inc. receives its major Spring update. The update includes 2 new cards, improvements in balance, more options for custom sessions, bug fixes, and a sizeable number of under-the-hood improvements.

Below is the list of the changes:

NEW FEATURES

More options for custom sessions

Now: When a new session is created, the list of goal values for each goal type is limited by 5 options.

After the update: The list of goal values for each goal type is expanded to 12-19 options with a smaller step between them. For points and rounds it is possible to set any value between 10 and 100 that is divisible by 5 (10, 15, 45, 75, 90, etc). For minutes the limits are 10-120 with a 10 minutes step (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, etc).

Reason: that was a popular request that existed for a long time, and for a good reason. We finally found the time to make it happen – thanks for the patience!

NEW CONTENT

New cards:

ːcardsː "Prize fund"

Location: Casino
Cost: FREE
Move points: 4
Type: regular
Number of these cards in the default deck: 1

Special rule:

Choose what you get: +$100 or +ːvotesː4 or -ːmaliceː4.

"If you are tasked with distribution of valuable prizes, do not forget to quietly add yourself to the list of winners. Preferably under some kind a pseudonym."

ːcardsː "Spire of Gremlins"

Location: Inferno
Cost: $650
Move points: 5
Type: secret
Get: +ːscoreː8 +ːmaliceː2
Number of these cards in the default deck: 1

Special rule:

Each opponent loses ːvotesː3. Teleport to The Astral.

"Conceived as the greatest breakthrough that would connect the Inferno and the Astral Plane, the Spire of Gremlins became a perpetually delayed construction project. Some say that the construction of this Spire cannot be finished, but can only be stopped.

BALANCING CHANGES

Cards:

ːcardsː "A Diversion in the Astral Plane"

Now: +ːscoreː13, +ːmaliceː8
After the update: +ːscoreː15, +ːmaliceː8

ːcardsː "The Allies of Chaos"

Now: +ːscoreː6, +ːmaliceː6
After the update: +ːscoreː7, +ːmaliceː6

Reason: Chaos cards are harder to play in the Astral, so they got a slight buff. This makes the choice more interesting: do you spend 10 votes/$1000 in the Inferno or try to deliver them to the Astral for a better reward?

ːcardsː "The Runner Bomb"

Now: 1 copy in the deck
After the update: 2 copies in the deck

Reason: as the number of permanent cards in the deck grows, players need an additional tool to deal with them.

Characters:

"The Banker: Money makes Money"

Now: Whenever you stop on one of the income spots, your income is increased by 2.
After the update: Whenever you stop on one of the income spots, your income is increased by a value equal to the number of opponents in the session (in team sessions, only players of opposing teams count as opponents).

Reason: The Banker is a polarizing character: too good in duels but weak against multiple opponents. The change slows down the Banker a bit in duels but allows growing income faster in sessions with multiple opponents.

"The Collector: Excavation"

Now: doesn't exist.
After the update: When you stop on an Income spot, choose between getting double income or discarding up to 6 cards.

Reason: The Collector relies on playing permanent cards more than other characters and this ability helps cycling cards in the hand for a cost of double income. This ability also provides a meaningful choice for the character: do you want to change cards or do you want money?

"The Damned: A Servant of Evil"

Now: Your starting ːmaliceː is 2.
After the update: Your starting ːmaliceː is 1.

Reason: the ːmaliceː2 on this character is somewhat redundant as it was added to the Damned in order to exceed the Thief's malice who at some point had it at 1. There is no more need in that and the change also helps the Damned in the early game if its player wants to get rid of the malice and avoid being auto-targeted by such cards as Karma, An Unmasking, etc.

"The Damned: Agressor"

Now: If you win Player Conflict, get ːscoreː2 and ːmaliceː1.
After the update: If you win Player Conflict, get ːscoreː2 and ːmaliceː1 (in team sessions this effect applies only to conflicts with players of opposing teams).

Reason: the lack of such limitation makes team combos with the Damned too strong, especially if combined with the Pauper.

Playing fields:

Reversal of change of the Clockwork Colony

Now: An Income spot and a Misfortune spot before the Jail removed on both boards.
After the update: Both spots will be returned to their initial spaces on the second board – Clockwork Colony.

Reason: The lack of the Misfortune spot before the Jail makes this location on the second board more welcoming than it should be. While our initial goal was to make the Jail less punishing, this is just too much: an arrest often turns into a way to teleport yourself closer to such locations as the Market or the Office.

OTHER CHANGES

The Jail events

Now: Players are forced to accept the last Jail event.
After the update: Players can decline the last Jail event. In this case, the player receives +1 malice and -1 Jail experience.

Reason: Jail events should provide a meaningful choice at all steps, including the last one which it now does. The change also eliminates the feeling that players are forced to accept the last event even if they don't like it.

Matchmaking

Now: 2 players can't enter the same ranked session if they already played together 3 ranked sessions in the previous 24 hours.
After the update: 2 players can't enter the same ranked session if they already played together 3 ranked sessions in the previous 24 hours OR if they played together 10 sessions of any type in the previous 720 hours (30 days).

Reason: this is a change that is based on the analysis of hundreds of players' protests. In ranked sessions, team play is only possible between friends who exploit matchmaking in order to play together. The change prevents such behavior more aggressively in order to make the ranked mode fairer.

The limit of 10 sessions per month was made on purpose. This way, the limitation won't affect players who are unfamiliar with each other but occasionally meet in ranked sessions because they play at the same time.

Please keep in mind that it doesn't affect our approach to the Fair Play Rules. The change makes harder to utilize team play but doesn't reduce or cancel the responsibility for the violation if it is confirmed.

Updated dice-roller animation

Reason:[/b] while we were fixing an issue with re-rolls (see below) we also used the opportunity to update the dice roller's animation which is now a bit shorter.

No ping indication on the server list

Reason: due to multiple changes that were made in the servers' architecture in the past months, the numbers on this list lost their meaning and mostly confuse players as they often show 0. The actual ping during sessions still can be seen through the in-game menu.

FIXES
  • Fixed a rare issue: if during a session player receives the request to roll the die and skips that request, the bot will decide if the roll happens or not. If bot decides positively and then rolls 1, the session might bug out and freeze. After the update, the session will continue normally.

  • Fixed a rare issue: if the timer expires during a dice re-roll, the result that is shown to the player on the screen and the result of the actual roll on the server could differ. This could lead to a different outcome than was expected by the look at the dice roller. After the update, the value on the dice roller and the server will always be the same.

Thanks for sticking with us, and for being a part of this game's wonderful community – we wish you lots of fun with the updated game, and we promise to continue working on improvements and new content throughout 2020!

NEW MODDING TOOLS ALREADY IN PRODUCTION
Today, we'd like to share with you a few updates: first of all, over the last few months we've been working on a number of tools that would make Gremlins, Inc. much more moddable.

There is still some way to go, but the results are already promising. We expect that eventually will enable players to modify the cards as well as playing field mechanics in the game through Steam Workshop, which is something that a lot of people in the community have been asking for. We wanted to share this news today to let you know that this is happening, and we have two developers working on this full-time right now.

THE AUDIENCE OF THE GAME KEEPS GROWING

Secondly, the player stats for January 2020 have come in. The great news is that every year, the audience of the game keeps growing, and January 2020 shows substantially higher numbers than the same month in any of the earlier years.

For a multiplayer tabletop game like Gremlins, Inc., sustaining the same size of audience year after year since its release is already a good achievement: this means that there is always someone to play with. Seeing this audience increase is even better: we welcome all the new, and the returning, players, and we promise to continue the same development policy that we follow with Gremlins, Inc. since 2015: to keep adding more content as free updates, and to organise regular tournaments, for everyone to enjoy the game from different angles.

Also worth mentioning: the population of the game's Discord server has increased by 23% over the last year! You can join here.

BALANCING BASED ON SERVER DATA
Thirdly, we also started a large project ("big data") that is analysing the real server data for tens of thousands of ranked sessions. We are now looking into large data samples for how different cards are played, and whether some balancing changes must be necessary even though we don't notice such cases at a glance.

In the course of the last month, we built a system that brings together millions of individual entries for a larger picture. You will see the results of this approach with the next update, where we plan to introduce balancing changes based on the analysis of the last 50,000 ranked sessions.

TWO NEW CARDS
Finally, today we also would like to present to you the 2 new cards which we will introduce with the Spring Update (most likely, it will happen in late March):

We hope that you have a good time playing Gremlins, Inc. and we look forward to bringing you more content, and the new modding features, in the near future!

Gremlins, Inc. - Qfasa

Hello there!

Based on the community feedback as well as the stats from tens of thousands of sessions completed on the servers of Gremlins, Inc., we plan to adjust special abilities of 2 characters.
Before we do this, we’d like to receive a bit more feedback – please help us by commenting on this topic on Steam forums as well as on the game’s Discord server!

Expected adjustments of the Banker
This is a character that is too powerful in duels but isn't effective enough in sessions with more than one opponent. To balance this out, we consider changing the ability "Money makes money" from:
  • whenever you stop on one of the income spots, your income is increased by 2
to:
  • whenever you stop on one of the Income spots, your income is increased by a value equal to the number of opponents in the session (in team sessions, only players of opposing teams count as opponents)
With this change, the Banker will become stronger in sessions that have a higher number of opponents – but will become weaker in duels where this ability will provide +1 income instead of +2.

Another smaller change that we consider for this character: changing the ability "Old Investments" to provide +10 income at the start of the session, but not to give any additional money.

The intention here is to reduce the initial aggression toward this character, which is sometimes experienced due to its better starting conditions.

Expected adjustments of the Collector
The main issue with this character is not its strength or weakness, but the fact that it isn't very interesting at its core because its abilities provide almost no meaningful choices. By design, the Collector also heavily relies on the size of its collection of active permanent cards – but has no tools at its disposal that could help to expand it.

To compensate this and make the character a bit stronger, we consider giving the Collector a new, fifth, ability “Excavation”:
  • whenever you stop on one of the Income spots, you can choose between using the spot's effect or discarding any number of cards from your hand
This ability will make the Collector very effective at managing its hand, but in order to use it the player must reject double income (and that could be a significant sum of money), which puts in front of the player an interesting choice. This also helps the Collector in cases where the player struggles with finding permanent cards to play and expand the collection.

Please share your feedback!
We very much look forward to your comments on these proposed changes in this thread on Steam Forums as well as on the game’s official Discord server. Thank you!

Gremlins, Inc. - Qfasa

We released Gremlins, Inc. on Steam in late 2015 and every year since then, the game has been performing better than before. If you told us that things would work this way back in 2015, we would have found this hard to believe. But here we are – with another record-setting year – thanks to dedicated players who come from all over the world!

Some companies measure their products by revenue. We measure our games by how much time people spend playing them, and by this measure last year saw more players play more sessions in Gremlins, Inc. than in any year before. We don’t think that we are creative geniuses, or that Gremlins, Inc. is a divine masterpiece. Rather, we think that the continued growth of the game is the collective result of these simple policies that we follow:
  • We continue to support the game with new content (including new cards)
  • We continue to organize regular official tournaments
  • In ranked sessions, we enforce the Fair Play Rules and review every protest
With today’s update, we take the opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the game and for recommending Gremlins, Inc. to your friends. Together, we’ve already built a great community around the game. In the new year, let’s continue to set new records!

Game Update

Changes on playing fields

Two spots on each playing field have been changed. From now on, you won't receive income on the way out from the Jail (it is replaced with a Risk spot) – but you also won't receive a misfortune because the Misfortune spot has been replaced with with a Bribe spot.

We discussed this change with the player community and among the dev team, from different angles for quite some time – and finally decided to give them a try, because we believe that they will affect positively the dynamics of the sessions.

Firstly, those who are arrested will no longer be punished twice: first by being jailed, then by passing through the Misfortune spot on the way out. Secondly, the choice of behaviour in the Jail is now affected to a lesser degree by the route through which the player prefers to leave the place, and more by the strategic decision of which behaviour is more advantageous under the current circumstances.

The first moment was especially unpleasant to new players who do not know yet how to avoid arrests and misfortunes, or how to be properly prepared for such events. And the second one created the situation where bad behaviour in the Jail was by far the most popular choice because escaping from the Jail was safer than leaving it after the sentence is completely served. We expect that now the balance of these decisions will begin to level off, since the threat of an additional misfortune on the way out no longer pushes players away from choosing good behaviour.

Updated timers

The speed balance of the game has been changed.

The new settings make it easier to play on Fast speed (more time is available for actions such as choosing a misfortune or a card when more than few are available) and increase the dynamics of sessions at Normal speed (which is used in ranked and tournament sessions), allowing less time for actions that do not require as much time as they were previously given. Slow and Relaxed settings of the timer now provide more time for each action, allowing to decrease significantly the pressure of the timer on players – without removing it entirely.

We are confident that these changes should positively affect not only the future ranked and tournament sessions, but custom sessions as well – no matter at which speed they are played.

GMT on both server clusters

Both server clusters, Amsterdam and Singapore, now use GMT as their server time zone. Mostly it is required for our internal operation, but this also makes it easier to create protests because local timezone is no longer relevant – only the time as it is shown in the "previous sessions" tab in player profiles.[/list]

Fixes
  • Fixed an issue with the "Judgement Day" card, where if a player was teleported from the Astral or from the Plant, that player was forced to skip an extra turn at the Court. [ːnotebookː Mr Burnham]
  • Fixed an issue with the "Lucky Devil" achievement which was possible to get in the Bank by playing "Eternal Mortgage" in combination with "A Lucky Potion" (it is a hidden achievent and that was the wrong way to get it). [ːnotebookː Doomy]
Known issues
Information about all currently known issues, their status, as well as the suggestions from the community can be found at our public page on Trello: https://trello.com/b/HjOStDAS You can use our forums to report new issues or make suggestions about the game – they will be added to the Trello list.

Have you noticed that quite a few of the fixes and improvements in this post have the names of the players who reported/suggested them?
