Cuphead

Cuphead is now two years old and has sold five million copies across all platforms. To celebrate, Studio MDHR are planning "5 days of fun and giveaways" which begins with a sale of 20% off their game, no matter where you buy it from. Steam, Humble, GOG, it's on sale everywhere. Except in Tesla cars, I guess, where you can get the first zone for free as part of software version 10.0, and play it while you're parked using a USB controller.

Cuphead's downloadable expansion The Delicious Last Course is due out next year, and there's still a Netflix TV series on the way as well. Exciting times to be a cup or mug.

You can now play Cuphead in a Tesla.

Perhaps I should rephrase that: you can now play Cuphead on a Tesla.

Studio MDHR's rock hard run-and-gun action game has a Tesla Edition, and it's now available in the Tesla Arcade (of course there's a Tesla Arcade).

For the better part of a century, the Billboard charts have plotted the course of our musical tastes. The rules have changed many times over the years, reflecting the evolution of music and how we consume it, but even in this digital era it remains a useful, indisputable measure of success.

There are actually multiple Billboard charts: The Billboard 200 is the big one, but there are all kinds of genre-specific rankings too, including one for jazz—which at the moment is topped by the Cuphead: Selected Tunes vinyl soundtrack.

Composed by Kristofer Maddigan, the double-album collection of music from the game debuted in the top spot, and is the first videogame soundtrack to achieve the mark: The original Cuphead soundtrack made it as high as number four on the jazz charts last year. The new soundtrack is also currently parked at number six on the Vinyl Albums chart, just behind Queen's Greatest Hits. (Hey, it's the vinyl charts. Time moves differently there.)

If you're a collector, the Cuphead double-album soundtrack is available for purchase from iam8bit for $40. If you'd just like to listen (and it's really good, so I would encourage you to give it a try), the original soundtrack is available digitally from Bandcamp.

Players can now learn their favourite jazz songs from Cuphead, as Studio MDHR has released official sheet music for the game's score.

Available to purchase, the sheet music covers all ages and skill levels, with options for high school bands, professionals and even barbershop quartets.

Prices start at $30 (around 25) and include songs like "Carnival Kerfuffle", "Floral Fury" and "Threatenin' Zeppelin", amongst many more from all your favourite boss fights.

While it was a long time coming, Cuphead dazzled me with its 1930s cartoon style, a callback not just to the old days of animation, but the individual techniques used by Fleischer and Disney in their earliest works.

Deliciously bouncy boss-rush shooter Cuphead might just have sparked a retro cartoon revival. Today, Netflix Animation have announced The Cuphead Show, an official tie-in series based on Studio MDHR’s debut hit. It seems that they’ve got the right people behind it too – they’ve tapped Dave Wasson as director (from Disney’s similarly-styled Mickey Shorts series) as executive producer. They’ll probably cut out the dozens of deaths per scene, for watchability’s sake, but I’m still holding out for the occasional bit of finger-gun action in between the gags.

Cuphead

Devilishly tricky 2D shooter Cuphead is getting an animated comedy spin-off on Netflix, with Studio MDHR's Chad and Jared Moldenhauer serving as executive producers. Unlike the game, The Cuphead Show will be possible to finish even if your hands refuse to obey your commands.

The cartoon will be produced by Netflix Animation and will apparently give us more Cuphead and Mugman antics as it expands upon the weird world we saw in the game. Cuphead was inspired by Fleischer and Disney cartoons from the '30s, so an animated series isn't much of a leap.

Writers and voice actors have yet to be announced, so it's probably early days for the production. Like fellow adaptation The Witcher, expect Netflix to tease us with costume tests and photos. Cuphead in a long silky wig, perhaps. Mugman in a corset. That sort of thing. Give our Cuphead review a read while you wait.

I've got no illusions about my dexterity, so I skipped Cuphead, depriving myself of some superb animation. I'm quite looking forward to The Cuphead Show, then, as I won't need to continually punish myself over and over again just to watch a neat cartoon.

Cuphead

Cuphead, the video game designed to look like a cartoon, is now getting a cartoon series based on it.

Netflix has picked up the rights to produce a Cuphead animated series with the look of the game's 1930s classic Fleischer cartoons remaining intact.

It's being helmed by the Emmy and Annie award-winning Dave Wasson, who has worked as director on Disney's Mickey Mouse Shorts series which similarly evokes the style of early animation.

The continuing adventures of Cuphead and co. will have to wait, as developers studio MDHR have delayed the pretty-pretty platformer’s expansion until next year. Announced for a 2019 launch during E3 2018, now ‘The Delicious Last Course’ is pushed back to some time in 2020 and for good reasons. Basically, the devs say, they want to make it proper good but don’t want to wreck themselves making it. Cuphead’s lead developers once remortgaged their homes to finance the game–a gamble with terrible odds that will ruin most people, to be clear–so hanging loose for a while sounds sensible. For now, hey look, a new trailer.

In an effort to prioritise the health of its employees, Studio MDHR has announced the Cuphead DLC: The Delicious Last Course will be delayed until 2020.

While the new expansion was originally slated for release this year, in a recent tweet the studio explained they're taking the time to make sure the content "meets the meticulous level of care and quality" they always strive for.

"This wasn't an easy decision to make, but we're confident it's one that will result in a higher quality experience that's all the sweeter when it does arrive," said studio co-director Chad Mordenhauer in a post about the DLC.
