Some of my favourite people in the world have been bartenders. I mean, I didn’t speak to many of them for more than ten minutes, and I know how it works – I used to tend bar too – you flirt for tips and for kicks. But a bartender has an uncanny way of being able to flip a switch in you. Not just with their sticky fluids, but also with their damn fine smiles, the ability to pay you attention for just those five minutes you want to order a drink after work. Sometimes you can make up stories about them, that the smile was really because you are the most handsome thing in the world, and they are going to Tom-Cruise-in-Cocktail you after their shift.

But ah, being the bartender. It’s a different sort of thing all together. It’s a real performance.

Redshirt has been updated to v1.04! This update is available immediately for Windows players, and Mac and Linux players will also receive the same update later today.

Here's what the update addresses:

  • FEATURE: Added an 'endless' game mode!
  • BUGFIX: Fixed game breaking after some away missions for some players (due to new NPCs profile pictures not saving properly.) This has been addressed, and previously-inaccessible games should now be working again too.
  • BUGFIX: Window displaying option to take a character off the station with you now shows their name and relationship to you.
  • BUGFIX: Game is now properly saving after leaving station early.
  • BUGFIX: Screen resolution settings are now being properly saved.
  • BUGFIX: Ensure player has heard of the illicitly-trading Geldar before being introduced to his brother.

This is going to end badly for almost everyone.

Redshirt‘s Spacebook sounds like the perfect idea: it’s a life sim which uses a social network as a metaphor through which to convey each character’s personal data and stats. The jokes write themselves. Add a Star Trek-like space station as the setting and you can almost see each element of the game’s design spooling out in front of you.

It’s a shame that the concept is the only thing I like. (more…)

Redshirt - Totally Not a Shark
As of yesterday, Redshirt was updated to v1.03 (for Windows players only, for now -- Mac & Linux updates are to follow.)

This addresses a few remaining bugs which have been reported since the last update. A changelist is as follows:

  • FIXED: Misreported away mission number of deaths.
  • FIXED: Some players reported bug in NPC generation.
  • FIXED (critical bug): Game was not ending for some players.
  • FIXED: Friend requests after away mission from people.
  • FIXED: Skills accidentally levelling up on game reload.

You can also read the updates made in v1.02 in the previous announcement here.
Redshirt - Totally Not a Shark
As of last night, Redshirt was updated to v1.02! This addresses many of the bugs which have come up in the first week since release. A changelist is as follows:

  • Fixed: Away Missions now have larger, more easily readable text.
  • Fixed: Save location bug: Some players had been reporting problems saving their games. Games are now newly saved to a "Saved Games" folder under your My Documents folder in Windows, or Documents in Mac. Your existing save-games will be moved automatically.
  • Fixed: Duplicate achievements bug
  • Fixed: Omega Bar ticket bug
  • Fixed: NPCs are more likely to 'like' statuses.
  • Fixed: No longer assigned aspirations you've already completed.
  • Fixed: end screen now actually plays sound effect & music
  • Fixed: Recycling/trashing S.H.O.P. items bug: this now works properly, and actually pays the appropriate amount of KarmaCreds.
  • Fixed: Job rewards listings now properly reflect any minuses to happiness and/or health.
  • Tweak: Ability to buy two tickets (instead of capping at 1), so a friend can also be saved
  • Tweak: Away Missions now feature a small chance of having to choose a friend to leave behind on an away mission!

Please note: if anyone is having trouble seeing their existing save games after updating to this new version, please read this thread.

Stardate -309131.9634703195 (or so a random website tells me it is): a videogame is released, on the internet. I think Oor Graham plans to bring you An Opinion on social networking meets Star Trek comedy game Redshirt a little further down the line, but according to the Captain’s Log (my RPS inbox full’o'press releases) The Tiniest Shark-developed, Positech-published sci-fi, turn-based management sim has made itself available for purchase as of this very day. Disaster-strewn social ladder-climbing within the confines of a starship also puts me in mind of Red Dwarf at its most well-grounded, which is a good thing. I do hope there’s a Gazpacho Soup achievement. (more…)

Redshirt is Now Available on Steam for PC and Mac!

Redshirt is the comedy sci-fi sim about social networking aboard a space station, starring the station's most ambitious low-ranking peon: you! As intense intergalactic conflict rages around you, it's up to you to accrue those all-important "likes" on your status updates! Whether you're looking for love, opportunities for promotion, or even a chance to play Zero-G golf with the captain, you can schmooze your way through social circles and claw your way up the career ladder. Perhaps you too can finally achieve the dream of an off-station transfer, or even the Redshirt's opportunity of a lifetime: being sent on an away-mission!
