I'm not tied to a specific genre, so you probably have to read my argumentation why I recommend a specific game. Some of them are also a bit old and/or controversial, but I want to list some games you probably don't know. Some of those games got a lot better due to some patches. In addition you'll find some well known games I really like.

Unbound is a fantastic platformer with some Metroidvania elements and a cute art style. Its portal ability is very creative & the level design makes great use of it. Also plays well so recommendation!

This game is unique in many ways and expands the concept of narrative in games. You are not simply watching cutscenes to hear a story, but have to "play" and understand them + you feel like Sherlock

One of the best Metroidvania games I have played in years. Art style is very unique, plays very well (controls + it's Souls-like too), the world is very interesting and the boss battles are great.

Reminds me a lot of Terraria (good game), but in a Scifi setting. It solves a few things, I personally "disliked" about it (e.g. now you have planets & can easily travel, where you want quite early).

Amazing darkfantasy RPG about managing disadvantages. It's about finding mercs crazy enough to explore the DarkestDungeon & manage their wounds doing so

You like reading, rogue-likes and Cthulhu-esque games? Then you will love this game. It's very well written, very atmospheric and has a lot to explore.

Art style, mechanics, characters and story generate a unique and dark civil war survival experience and it forces you to make some tough decisions.

My fav. of all time. If you can overlook the technical issues and the age of the game (1997), than you can enjoy a big world, deep story & mechanics.

It's an awesome Star Wars RPG from 2003 with nice characters, good combat (D&D D20 system) & a fitting story about Jedi and Sith. Must play for SW fans.

It's from 2003, so some of you may have never played it. Story, atmosphere & gunplay (esp. with mods) are masterly put together (kicks the ass of 3).
