Are you ever hanging out with your friends online and trying to find a game you guys can play that's fun and worth a night or two (or more?) I am in this situation a lot so I'll tell you the stuff we've liked

So don't actually play Source. Look up servers that play the surf mod/maps. One of the chillest things to do in the world, ironically in an FPS engine.

A super arcade-y racing game that is somewhere between Burnout and Garry's Mod. New tracks keep things constantly interesting.

An RTS with something for everyone. Pretty deep micromanagement despite being squad based, but also very casually entertaining and playable with a group

If you have never understood why Call of Duty is so popular, try getting a bunch of your friends in a server with this game. It's unbelivably good.

We liked this game more than Diablo, and it's free so it was easier to convince people to get it. One of the best free games I've ever played.

Similar to DotA 2, seems hardcore at first but it's just insanely fun to play with friends, even if you all are totally new.

I don't know if anyone plays this with random people, but if you can get your friends online into it then it's insanely fun and keeps you coming back.

Why is Payday 2 so good? A horde defense bank robbing game with grindy RPG stuff? It seems like it shouldn't work, but it totally does with a group.

The best multiplayer social survival game right now. It's like DayZ but it has a lot more for a dedicated group to chew on.

DotA has a rap as a hardcore, serious kids only sort of game. But if you can get 5 people together you understand why the game is popular: it's just fun
