From STO Executive Producer Stephen Ricossa,

Last Friday we lost someone dear to us. All of us. Not just the people of the Star Trek community, but anyone who ever tried with varying success to make the Vulcan salute. Anyone who ever said “Live Long and Prosper,” whether or not they knew who brought that phrase into our cultural lexicon, and anyone who can understand the impact a positive public figure can have on the world. Leonard Nimoy was more than just a Star Trek icon—he was a cultural icon. His passing has been felt farther and wider than I think he could have possibly known, and I feel it's that humility, despite all of his skills, talents, and fame, that made him someone we all care about.

I’m certain everyone who knew of Nimoy's work will remember him in their own special way, and I want to make sure Star Trek Online also has an in-game way for people to remember him as well. As of this morning, there are several locations throughout the game that will allow people to take a moment to remember Spock, Leonard Nimoy, and other departed friends from Star Trek history.

Based on where our community chose to congregate and pay their respects, we will be replacing the central structure on the fountain on Vulcan with a stone statue of Spock with the inscription “Live Long and Prosper."
We will be adding the same statue to New Romulus with the inscription “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few”, as building toward Romulan and Vulcan reunification was one of Spock’s great life works. The Romulan Republic would not exist without his teachings. Through the next week we will also hang black flags of mourning in Earth Spacedock, Qo'noS, and New Romulus, so everyone that passes through those hubs will know we have lost someone important to us all.

Finally, we will be adding a memorial plaque to those same locations for not only Leonard Nimoy, but for others in the Star Trek family who have passed. People will be able to interact with this memorial and read the names, the dates of their birth and passing, and a personal quote where possible. In this small way, we hope to honor the memory and contribution of those who helped shape Star Trek into the cultural touchstone it is today.

Live Long and Prosper.

Stephen Ricossa
Executive Producer

The Star Trek Online team is saddened to hear of the passing of Star Trek icon Leonard Nimoy.

As an actor, Mr. Nimoy helped define Trek from its first days. Spock was simultaneously an outsider and a member of the inner circle, an alien and the most human of all. As a writer and director, he shaped some of the Enterprise's most memorable adventures. Outside of Star Trek, he was a teacher, a poet, an artist and a father.

We were honored to have Mr. Nimoy as part of Star Trek Online. He helped us announce the development of STO at the Las Vegas convention in 2009, and returned to portray Spock again in the game itself. The few hours we were able to spend talking to him about Star Trek, its meaning and the impact Trek has had on its fans are something we will always treasure.

Today we honor Mr. Nimoy's legacy and extend our condolences to his family, his friends and his fans.

To absent friends …

When Captain James T. Kirk took the Enterprise out, it was originally scheduled for a five-year mission, so five years has a pretty big significance in Star Trek lore. Seeing Star Trek Online mark a date of five years of live operations is a cause for celebration unlike any other year, and this anniversary we are pulling out all the stops.

We’re kicking off the celebrations early for Star Trek Online’s 5-year Anniversary! We’ve had an amazing year and want to thank all of you for making Delta Rising and Star Trek Online a great experience! Every day from Monday 1/26 at 10am till Thursday 1/29 at 10am we’ll be giving away new C-Store items for Captains to enjoy! Every 24 hours, we’ll be giving out a different item (or even multiple), so be sure to grab these up! You can get the updated details on the daily giveaway here!

Also, from now through 2/2/2015 at 10am PST, you can enjoy a 15% discount on Master Keys in the C-Store. With our Lockbox Drop Event going on, now is the best time for Captains to load up on keys and grab those ships you have been wanting.

Finally, our Anniversary Season and Event begins on Thursday 1/29! This year, we’ve got two additions to the Anniversary content that will run from January 29th through February 26th of 2015. The first of which is a new Featured Episode called “Dust to Dust,” and the second is a new minigame where Q has tasked you with stabilizing Omega Particles across the galaxy in an effort to secure the keys to the new Kobali Samsar Cruiser Starship as well as craft some upgrade kits in the process. Get some initial details here!

It is a big time of the year for Star Trek Online. Come and join the celebrations!

The Lobi Crystal Consortium (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Quark Enterprises) has announced that they are no longer going to be offering the Delta Expedition Lock Box as in-game drops and rewards as of Thursday January 29, 2015 at 10AM PST. Now’s your opportunity to open one of these boxes for a chance at some spectacular prizes. For information on the Delta Expedition Lock Box and the items that you have a chance to win, check out our blog here!

In addition, for a limited time only, we are running a special Lock Box promotion!

We understand that, as a Free-to-Play game, some players may have only recently started playing Star Trek Online. This means that they may have missed out on many limited-time features that are no longer available for acquisition. In order to offer these players the opportunity to experience everything that the game has to offer, we plan to periodically run promotional events that will bring back these retired features. Our hope is that both newer players, and returning players that are leveling up new characters, will be able to take advantage of these promotions to get their hands on rewards that would otherwise be unobtainable.

And so, from now until Thursday, January 29, 2015, players will once again be able to find previously-retired Lock Boxes dropping while playing content in Star Trek Online. This includes the:

Delta Expedition Lock Box
Xindi Lock Box
Undine Lock Box
Hirogen Lock Box
Voth Lock Box
Elachi Lock Box
Tal Shiar Lock Box
Dominion Lock Box
Temporal Lock Box
Tholian Lock Box
Ferengi Lock Box
Cardassian Lock Box

In order to get your hands on these retired boxes, you need do nothing outside the ordinary – simply play the content you already enjoy experiencing in Star Trek Online. The chance to receive any of these Lock Boxes is the same across the entirety of the game.
