The Dream Machine: Chapter 1 & 2 - Cockroach

Citizen!

It's now exactly one month left until release. Writing that makes me both nervous and excited, as I'm sure you can imagine. It'll be a pretty hectic month, but that's part of the fun.

Today we're releasing a NEW TRAILER for the game: Youtube Link . It contains some shots from Chapter 6 to whet your appetite. Consider that a spoiler warning if you absolutely don't want to see anything from Chapter 6 pre-launch. Feel free to share the trailer with everyone you know.

As if that wasn't enough, we also just released an update to the game. It contains quite a few things, though most of them are under-the-hood stuff in preparation for the launch.

• Game: Changed main typeface
• Game: Increased max walking speed to 2.0
• Game: Increased default walking speed to 1.5
• Game: Made sure correct background displays during closeups
• Chapter 3: Color corrected Victor's climbing animation
• Chapter 3 & 5: Tweaked dialogue
• Chapter 4: Tweaked Mr Morton's notebook text
• Chapter 5: Tweaked vampire closeup
• Chapter 4 & 5: Made some dialogue options undimmable
• Chapter 5: Fixed floor 1 elevator bug
• Chapter 5: Fixed floor 2 background color glitch
• Chapter 5: Fixed bug that happened while viewing a close up with helmet on
• Demo: Updated demo

We'd like to squash as many bugs as possible before Chapter 6 comes out, so we'd really appreciate if you drop us a line if you encounter anything that seems buggy in the game.

And remember: The Machine Loves You!

Cheers,

Release Date Announcement

The day has come for us to put an end to this long and awesome journey. We're well aware that the period between releases is too long, but there's only two of us making a very ambitious game by hand, so things take time. Hopefully you'll consider it worth the wait once you get to play it.

I should have gotten this update out the door a bit sooner, but we've been busy working on an announcement that I hope will delight and excite. Expect Chapter 6 related news very, very soon, dear friends...

In the meantime, this month's update mostly focuses on behind the scenes stuff and some tweaks to the end of Chapter 5. The changes we made to the dialogue system have now been fully implemented, and I don't expect I'll spend time on that moving forward.

Which is just as well, because things are about to get busy...

For those who think we're wasting time releasing these updates, I've added a question to the FAQ. It's at the bottom.

Here's the full patch contents:

• Game: Split asset file into smaller chunks
• Game: Reduced the game's memory footprint
• Chapter 1, 4 & 5: Tweaked living room background
• Chapter 1: Tweaked Edie dialogue
• Chapter 3: Fixed graphical glitch with coal chute hatch
• Chapter 4: Made some dialogue options undimmable
• Chapter 5: Color tweaked backgrounds
• Chapter 5: Fixed mob interaction
• Chapter 5: Added vampire dialogue
• Chapter 5: Clarified roof hole hint
• Chapter 5: Added end dialogue option with Willard
• Chapter 5: Tweaked end dialogue with Willard
• Chapter 5: Clarified Willard hint
• Demo: Updated demo

Don't be shy if you see something strange or buggy in the game.

Cheers,

I hope you're all doing well despite the fact that it's February – the dreariest month of the year. To give you a little more pep in your step, we're releasing a fairly meaty update for the game.

The biggest change is a continuation of the work we began last month, when we made the selected dialogue options remain dimmed throughout the chapter. This time we extended that functionality so the option states also gets included in your save files. This was done because a certain portion of Chapter 6 required it, but it really helps in the more dialogue heavy parts of previous chapters as well. Especially the interrogations in Chapter 3.

Development on Chapter 6 is going very well. We're still working on the last big areas. We don't have an ETA yet. Stay tuned.

For those who think we're wasting time releasing these updates, I've added a question to the FAQ. It's at the bottom. It'll hopefully answer some of your concerns.

Here's what the update contains:

• Engine: Added dialogue states to save format
• Game: Made some dialogue options undimmable
• Game: Tweaked UI
• Chapter 2: Tweaked item placement
• Chapter 1 & 4: Tweaked Edie dialogue
• Chapter 4: Streamlined portrait photo interaction
• Chapter 5: Removed dialogue
• Chapter 5: Removed response option
• Chapter 5: Rewrote dialogue
• Chapter 5: Added response option
• Chapter 5: Added interaction options
• Chapter 5: Increased beam path visibility
• Chapter 5: Clarified legion hint
• Chapter 5: Tweaked sound volumes
• Chapter 5: Fixed graphical glitch with Selma's grandfather
• Chapter 5: Reduced memory footprint
• Chapter 5: Removed autosave point
• Chapter 5: Added fail-safe check
• Chapter 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5: Fixed typos

Don't be shy if you see something strange or buggy in the game.

Happy New Year!

We hope you survived the holiday season unscathed. Hopefully you even received a present or two. We also hope that 2016 treated you real swell, like a gentleman, and that you're ready to charge this new shiny year with gusto and pizazz. I know I am!

Charging out of the gate, I'm therefore releasing another one of our beloved updates, to amuse and delight. It's mostly small tweaks that might not look very impressive on their own, but given that we add quite a few of these each month, they do add up over time.

Since our last update, Erik has moved on from experimenting with trippy camera techniques and is now working on the last big area of the game. I'm doing quite a few different things at the moment, but I've been implementing some of the things he delivered and the results are quite spectacular so far. I look forward to hearing what you think. I'm not saying the chapter is done. I just want to keep you informed.

Last but not least, for the few who think we're wasting time releasing these updates, I've added a question to the FAQ. It's at the bottom. My humble Christmas present to you guys. Cheers.

Here's what the update contains:

• Engine: Removed loading bar during fast loads
• Game: Made dialogue states chapter permanent
• Chapter 1: Tweaked item description
• Chapter 1, 2, 4 & 5: Tweaked hallway background
• Chapter 1, 4 & 5: Tweaked living room background
• Chapter 3: Fixed typos
• Chapter 5: Fixed graphical background glitch
• Chapter 5: Reduced memory footprint

Don't be shy if you see something strange or buggy in the game.

Big Love!

I recently played through the entire game, and saw a few things I wanted to tweak. Very minor changes, mind you, so don't get too excited. Only get appropriately and modestly excited.

The last update was only about two weeks ago, so as you might imagine the situation hasn't changed much. I'm still writing dialogue for the "boss" puzzle and Erik is still experimenting with some trippy camera techniques. The results look pretty stunning so far.

In the meanwhile, here's what the update contains:

• Game: Made sure the game stays on top of the Windows 10 task bar
• Chapter 1: Replaced crowbar graphic
• Chapter 1: Replaced fish graphic
• Chapter 1: Fixed problem with Alicia's first dialogue
• Chapter 1: Removed 2 faulty interaction options
• Chapter 2: Replaced sound stinger
• Chapter 2: Added Victor's hand to glasses close-up
• Chapter 2: Replaced hand graphic
• Chapter 5: Replaced hand graphic

Don't be shy if you see something strange or buggy in the game.

Big love!

Fellow Darlings,

There won't be a November patch since we've exclusively been working on Chapter 6 this month and none of the changes we've made to the game has affected previous chapters (as they usually do).

Progress has been pretty strong lately. I was stuck on what I (somewhat jokingly) call the "boss puzzle", and had to backtrack the design a little bit. Nothing too major though. I just had to rework the general flow of the puzzle. That's been resolved now however.

There's still a ton of work for me to do on that puzzle (mostly dialogue) but I've gotten over that largest hump. Which is nice.

Erik has moved on to the second to last sequence in the game. It requires some experimentation with camera techniques we've never used before, but that will hopefully not take too long.

After that we only have the last sequence left to do.

We'll continue to be coy about release dates for a little while longer, because our time estimations are usually wrong and that just pisses people off.

UPDATE: I couldn't keep my sticky fingers away from the game. That's how I roll. Sue me.

Here's what this mini update contains:

• Game: Attempted to make the game stay on top of the Windows 10 task bar
• Demo: Updated demo

Big love!

This update came a little bit later than usual, as some of you have noted. The reason is that I spent the weekend in the lovely Swiss town of La Chaux-de-Fonds, giving a talk, befriending the native population and drinking Absinth. Swiss Absinth is a bit different from French, but they both get the job done for sure. I've also tried Czech Absinth but the less said about that the better...

All-in-all, I give Switzerland 10 out of 10.

As for the update, we're still in full production mode on Chapter 6 (no date yet), so it's mostly just small tweaks here and there. I hope you'll like them none the less.

Check out the full update details below:

• Engine: Fixed task manager bug
• Game: Tweaked sound levels
• Chapter 1: Fixed rock issue
• Chapter 1: Increased size of item button
• Chapter 5: Increased size of navigation button
• Chapter 2, 4 & 5: Added names to Mr Morton's dream map
• Chapter 5: Fixed typo

As always: shout out in the comments below if you encounter anything strange/buggy in the game. Thanks to everyone who's taken the time to report an issue!

Cheers,
