Sigma Theory: Global Cold War - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Steve Hogarty)

There are few people I find as fascinating as Mister Julian Assange, the debonair hacker and out-of-work Geralt cosplayer who hid inside an embassy for seven years, skateboarding into the ambassador s bedroom and demanding to know the new wi-fi password so often that they finally got annoyed and kicked him out.

Assange has the campy flare of a mid-tier Drag Race contestant, randomly appearing on his chic little balcony like he s Evita addressing his adoring public, except instead of Madonna it s Santa Claus from a Japanese horror film. One time, he popped out of his room waving a hundred-page United Nations ruling, like he was Michael Jackson and the document was an imperilled, dangling baby. He d clearly used Ecuador s inkjet to print it out too, tying up the only printer in the building for any diplomats who needed it for scanning in trade agreements and whatnot. He clutched that thick ream of purloined A4, still warm from the printer tray, like it belonged to him. And it was in full CMYK too, judging by the brilliant azure blue of the UN logo on the first page. There was a man who wasn t paying for his own printer cartridges. And for that reason, at least, he deserves to be in prison forever.

Sonic Mania - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

I was unprepared for Sonic the Hedgehog to have human teeth. Seeing as chilli dogs are his favourite food yet he eats them without soaking the bun in milk, I suppose I knew that Sonic wouldn’t have the mouth and teeth of a real hedgehog in our world. I was still not ready for human teeth and weird lips. The first trailer for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie (or Sonic the Hedgepig, as it’ll likely be named in the UK) has arrived, starring a CGI hedgepig voiced by Ben Schwartz (best known as Jean-Ralphio in Parks and Recreation) alongside human actors including Jim Carrey and James Marsden, and I just wasn’t ready for the teeth.

On day eight we start the weekly ritual by clearing the former ritual objects, beginning again with the first of a new set. This time I start with a sprig of plant in a bottle. It makes a bright tinkling noise when Marty Burnham The Moon Witch picks it up. Marty seems tired again today, which means we’re back in sync, because I am knackered>. I fell asleep on the train to work listening to a podcast about bad books.

World of Goo - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

That wonderful World Of Goo, a modern classic of a puzzle ’em up, gets polished up for the present day in a new free update. Coming over ten years after the game’s release, the update brings support for modern widescreen resolutions, art reworked to look better at our shiny new high resolutions, less bugginess on modern operating systems, interface improvements borrowed from newer versions like the Nintendo Switch release, and other welcome tweaks. Loading it back up just now, gosh, World Of Goo really is still charming so I’m glad that returning is now less of a bother. Epic will be giving the game away free in a few days too.

Facebook, a company with a fabulous track record in using artificial intelligence to make the world a better place, have figured out how to turn telly people into videogame people. The researchers’ Vid2game game project lets them create a controllable avatar from live-action footage, as demonstrated below with a tennis player.

The resulting animations aren’t super convincing, at least at this stage. That doesn’t stop Facebook boasting that their work “paves the way for new types of realistic and personalized games, which can be casually created from everyday videos.”

Deadlight - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Katharine Castle)

Before Tequila Works set about tugging heartstrings in their wistful puzzle-platformer Rime, they were full-on wrenching them out of your chest in their gritty zombie-platformer Deadlight.

An odd origin story, perhaps, for a studio that’s now mostly known for their bright, colourful artwork and raw, emotional sucker punches, but Deadlight was very much a product of its time. When Telltale’s The Walking Dead was at the peak of its popularity and everyone> wanted in on some munching zombie action.

It’s been a big year for Minecraft, that monolithic devourer of children’s free time, and Microsoft are gearing up to celebrate its tenth anniversary. They just won’t be sending any invitations to original lead developer Marcus “Notch” Persson, whose “comments and opinions” online have gotten him kicked off the mega-corporation’s christmas card list, according to Variety. This comes shortly after the game’s current developers removed all references to Notch from the game’s title screen, as reported by RPS fanzine PC Gamer, although he still exists within the game’s credits.

Medieval multiplayer melee game Mordhau is out today, looking to split the difference between Mount & Blade: Warband, For Honor and Chivalry: Medieval Warfare with its blend of pseudo-realistic first-person brawling. Developed by Triternion, it’s a big-team multiplayer game (with an optional battle royale mode) for up to 64 players, with a focus on lethal, heavily armoured and messy close combat. While the game itself looks fine, the first wave of players are reporting some launch-day server troubles. Triternion have temporarily cut matches down to 48 players until this is fixed. Below, a stab-happy trailer.

As much as League Of Legends studio Riot Games has sworn to clean up their act after multiple scathing reports of sexism and abuse within the company, it hasn’t been enough for their staff. While it doesn’t look like the in-house term ‘Rioter’ will become literal, Waypoint report that employees are considering walking out. This appears to be in response to the company’s attempts to use contractual arbitration clauses to shut down legal action from staff. Unsurprisingly, Riot hope to appease the unrest through “small group sessions” with their aggrieved developers.
