WARNO - [EUG] Gal Marcel Bigeard
Hello!

Get ready for some important news with today’s DevBlog; specifically in regard to the (late) delivery of WARNO - SOUTHAG.

And we don’t come empty-handed. As an apology of sorts, we will deliver a free Reinforcement Pack to feature two new NATO divisions in the near future.

Lots to explain, so let’s dive in straight away.

WARNO - SOUTHAG Delays

Well, well, well, Eugen meets again its nemesis: the wickedest of all… time! Yes, we know, this is not the first moment that we encountered delays with one of our projects. The road of game development can be long, complex, and quite bumpy.

As we have wrestled with hiccups or changes in schedule before, a disclaimer of sorts: Eugen is a small, dedicated, independent game studio with a hard-working team that does their damndest to get everything out the door as soon as possible. However, game dev involves delays, things not working out, other issues, bugs, etc., which means that we can’t always deliver what we promised on time. Such is the case with WARNO - SOUTHAG.

We originally announced that WARNO expansion would be delivered by Q2 of 2025 (meaning April to June). Clearly, we have not made this deadline. WARNO - SOUTHAG is delayed, though we are working very hard to get the new expansion into your hands as soon as possible.

Of course, we want to make up for this. You know Eugen, we might not be able to deliver on time, but we do owe up. As an “apology” to our community, and to make sure there is not too much restless waiting, we will release the already announced Reinforcement Pack #10, that is the new map Eiche, but also extra content in the the form of a Reinforcement Pack #11.

Reinforcement Pack #11

A little bit more detail: Reinforcement Pack #11 contains two divisions with a host of new units. These were chiefly made for WARNO - NORTHAG: some only featured in our Army General campaigns, others had remained unused for they fitted neither AG not our multiplayer division. On top of that, we fleshed the divisions with some new models build purposedly for this RP.
This particular offering would have been, somewhat unfairly, overlooked had we put them through a Nemesis vote. At the same time, due to the content and theme, being able to offer them as a free Reinforcement Pack #11 makes now even more sense!

So, what are you going to get?

RP #11 - Low Countries’ Lions

Reinforcement Pack #11 will be called Low Countries’ Lions and will feature two (yup) NATO divisions: the Dutch Commando Legerkorpsachtergebied (or CLKA), and the Belgian Division Mobilisation (or DivMob). As you can see, two NATO rear-area formations with a rather interesting make-up and plenty of unique equipment. The name stems from the fact that the Netherlands and Belgium both share the Leo Belgicus in their coat of arms.

For the Dutch CLKA, you’ll get among other things the new in-game YP-408 series of APC, the Dutch trademark Cold War workhorse, which was in real life retired in 1989, just before our war scenario. In our alternative history, they would have been passed to another “lesser active” unit and seen the light within this battlegroup. Although a rear-area command, this division doesn't rely as extensively on reservists as other similar ones.

As for the Belgian DivMob, a treasure trove of original weaponry awaits. Belgium might not have been the most modernly equipped NATO ally, but it has a special profile among Western armies: it didn’t throw anything away. Much like the Soviets, the Belgians kept hundreds of armored vehicles, APCs, SPGs, and even tanks in storage. This new division will give them plenty of opportunity to shine.

We will highlight first the Belgian DivMob today, and the Dutch CLKA later this week.

The DivMob’s Historical Background

The Belgian Division Mobilisation, or in-game the DivMob, was an administrative - not field - command of the Belgian Armed Forces. All mobilized troops and equipment would be processed through this formation before final assignment to an active unit.

While the Dutch CLKA is a rear-area command in the field, the DivMob is instead a division created from interior troops, used in the case of an enemy breakthrough of NATO’s main line of defense. This formation would also have been deployed if the communists had ever invaded Belgian territory or dropped airborne troops over the country.

In this way, the DivMob acted as a divisional headquarters and commanded a combat group from Belgium’s Interior Forces, which included:

  • 9x Territorial regiments, forming the core of the DivMob.
  • 3x Regular light infantry regiments, acting as interior mobile reserves.
  • 4x Engineer battalions, plus independent companies.
  • Reservists.
  • Gendarmes, including the Royal Belgian Gendarmerie’s armored squadron.
  • Heavy AA and artillery units.
  • Lots of other equipment in storage, some of it coming out of long-term warehouses. This ranges from APCs, self-propelled guns, and tanks, all of which are to be manned by reservists.

Ultimately, although fielding older equipment, the DivMob is a mechanized formation at more levels than its active field-duty combat division counterparts.

The DivMob in WARNO

How will the DivMob look like in WARNO - SOUTHAG? New units are both italic and bolded. Some units are new to this nation, but can be found with NATO in other armies. The following might be subject to change.

LOG
A good category, as can be expected from this type of division.
  • For supplies, you can deploy an FOB, the (new to this nation) UNIMOG S404 LOG, and heavy VOLVO N10 LOG. supply trucks, as well as the few Belgian Navy's SEA KING supply helicopters, deploying in their cool-looking livery.
  • Command units include the ILTIS PC jeep, as well as the armored (new) AMX-13 MOD.56 PC and M75 PC. The former is the command variant of the French AMX-13 VCI APC, while the latter is a heavy American APC from the Korean War, the first of a family that will spawn the M59 and M113 later on.

INF
A very good category, with the DivMob having all the hallmarks of an infantry division.
  • The core of the battlegroup will be formed by PROVINCIAUX, Belgian territorial troops. These are 12-strong squads equipped with FAL, 1x FALO and an M20 Super Bazooka, plus the Reservist trait. They come in either trucks or M75 AIV with a .50 cal machine gun. The CMDT PROVINCIAUX is the leader variant, being a 10-strong squad with 4x PM Vigneron, 5x FAL, 1x FALO and smoke grenades, with the same Reservist trait and transport option.
  • To keep the reservists in check, PREVOTE in ILTIS and ROVER PREVOTE (with Military Police trait) and blue-dressed GENDARMES, 10-strong with PM Vigneron, FAL and 2x FALO and the Military Police trait are available. Aside from trucks, the latter unit can deploy in two dedicated Military Police vehicles: the VW T3 GENDARMERIE minivan and BDX Irish-made APC, armed with 2x MAG machine guns.
  • The combat engineer battalions are represented as the PIONIER (regular, RL-83 recoilless rifle, and leader variants), the same as the Belgian 16de Pantserdivisie (part of WARNO - NORTHAG), in softskin vehicles or AMX-13 MOD.56 VCI APCs.
  • To represent the three regular light infantry regiments, we used the CHASSEURS ARDENNAIS (even though in real-life, they only amount to one of the three regiments) primarily for their World War I and World War II fame… and their cool looks. These are 8-man strong squads, with FNC, 2x MAG and LAW, plus the Security trait, deployable in trucks. Their CMDT CHASSEURS ARDENNAIS leader variant are 4-strong with 3x FNC, 1x scoped Model 30-11, a Blindicide RL-83 and smoke grenades, with access to both trucks or the AIFV-B-50.
  • The RES. PARA-COMMANDO represents the depot's 4th (Reserve) Para-Commando Bataillon, which wasn’t featured in the MNAD battlegroup (of WARNO - NORTHAG) as was the rest of the regiment. As reserve paratroopers, this unit doesn’t receive the Reservist trait, to reflect the higher standards of training, but does lose the Shock trait of their more active counterparts. This unit is an 8-strong squad with FNC, 2x FALO and Blindicide RL-100, plus the Airborne trait's Forward Deployment. They can deploy in UNIMOG UI350L or UNIMOG UI350L PARA. trucks.
  • Support units featured are MAG 7,62mm, MILAN 1, and PARA. MILAN 2.

ART
Very good, with lots of guns, and plenty of self-propelled guns in storage. This category is also not too expensive, with a good number of slots.
  • The Belgian territorial and light infantry’s fire support is restricted to the US-made, World War II-era M1 81mm mortar, and the self-propelled AMX-13 MOD.56 MORTIER (the same mortar weapon system, but mobile).
  • The new M108A2 was an ungodly combination of M113 components, early M109’s turret, and the M103’s 105mm gun, which the Americans phased out after the Vietnam War. The Belgians retained these vehicles in service much longer, only replacing them shortly before our time frame. Consider this a "poor man's Abbott". Having only been replaced recently in WARNO’s timeline, the unit is still considered a regular.
  • The rest of the DivMob’s artillery are all drawn from storage and receive the Reservist trait:
    • The M44A1, a 155mm open-top, medium-range self-propelled gun.
    • The M55, a fully armored medium-range 203mm SPG.
    • The towed M59 155mm, which is the venerable Long Tom of World War II fame.
    • The M115 203mm, this is the venerable World War II heavy towed M1 8-inch howitzer.

    TANK
An average category, but with quite a few (older) choices in its arsenal.
    • Belgium held enough tanks in storage to equip several reserve tank companies of M41 (a single card) and M47 (two cards). The former, the ”Walker Bulldog” light tank had a quick-firing 76mm gun, while the latter “Patton” (a completely different design to the later M60 Patton) was equipped with a 90mm tank gun, which was by 1989 obsolete. Both feature the Reservist trait.
    • The Belgian Gendarmerie (former paramilitary police) could call on an armored squadron with the mission to escort the Belgian royal family in case of war, from the palace to evacuation by plane or boat. Having done their royal duty, they would commit to the fight. This formation was equipped with domestic-made armored cars looking suspiciously like AMLs, although better armored: the new FN 4RM/52F MiMo, armed with the same gun-mortar as the AML-60, plus the FN 4RM/62F ABC, armed with a CATI 90mm gun, slightly better than the one found on an AML-90. Both units receive the Military Police trait.
    • Several anti-tank vehicles can also be deployed: JPK 90, the new AMX-13 MOD.56 MILAN (with a single MILAN 1 launcher), and the CRV(T) STRIKER. Also, some ILTIS MILAN 2.

    REC
Average, with slots quickly becoming more expensive.
    • Infantry recon includes:
      • PATROUILLE PROV., which are 4-man squads with FALs, one FALO and LAW, in an ILTIS.
      • ECLAIREURS PROV., which are 6-man squads with FALs, one FALO and Blindicide RL-83, deployable in trucks and M75 AIV.
      • The SDRA 8. This unit represents Belgian cells from the infamous Gladio stay-behind network. Those operatives, disguised as civilians and having access to prepared hidden weapon caches, were envisioned to have any Warsaw Pact invasion bypass them, to then organize intelligence and sabotage missions in the rear. In Belgium, those weapon caches were mostly World War II leftovers, but with lots of explosives! In WARNO, they are featured as 10-strong recon squads with 3x MP-40, 6x M1 Carbine, 1x, Model 30-11 sniper rifles and satchel charges, with the Special Forces, Shock, and False Flag traits.
    • As mentioned with the 16de Pantserdivisie, the Belgian Armed Forces had bought a large number of the CRV(T) family of armored vehicles from the United Kingdom, enough to equip all their combat divisions’ recon regiments fully … and other units!
      • This means you’ll get to deploy more CRV(T) SCORPION and CRV(T) SCIMITAR.
    • Air recon units include:
      • ALOUETTE II unarmed helicopters.
      • The (new for this nation) CM.170 MAGISTER recon plane with rockets. Identical to the French 152e Division d’Infanterie (Nemesis - Plateau d'Albion), this aircraft is featured in this division in Belgian silver and red livery.

    AA
Pretty good, with a balance between costs and options.
    • Belgian heavy SAM units field the ubiquitous I-HAWK, with the batteries themselves protected against low-flying air attacks by HSS.630-3 triple 20mm guns.
    • The only self-propelled AA gun is the MAN Z311 HSS.630-3, which is the above gun mounted on a truck.
    • Other towed units include the M55 MAXSON quad-12,7mm and the heavy BOFORS 57mm M/54, which the Belgians were the only ones to field outside of Sweden.
    • A single card of PARA. MISTRAL MANPAD teams with Forward Deployment.

    HEL
Non-existent. There are no helicopters, nor cards, nor slots. The DivMob completely lacked any type of rotorcraft for support.

    AIR
Average in terms of options, costs, and the availability of units.
    • You’ll get to fly the new payload variant of the ALPHA JET [HE] and HE2 with bombs.
    • The F-16A [AA] and the close air support F-16A [HE/CLU] will be both available, as well as the MIRAGE 5BA [CLU].

The DivMob is an unusual battlegroup in the sense that it is a heavily mechanized reserve division, wielding mostly obsolete equipment, and relying chiefly on its capable infantry and a significant number of artillery to make a difference on the battlefield.

We will soon return with a description of the Dutch CLKA. In the meantime, members of the Strike Team who have helped us testing these divisions will have the pleasure to stream them for you and tell you more about them.

    WARNO - SOUTHAG Expansion

WARNO - SOUTHAG is WARNO’s second expansion after WARNO - NORTHAG and showcases the fighting in southern West Germany near the Alps and on the Czechoslovakian frontier.

In the southern reaches of Germany, the Warsaw Pact with the Soviet Central Group of Forces, bolstered by the communist Czechoslovakians, battles against a counter-attacking NATO SOUTHAG command led by France, with American, West German, Canadian, and reinforcing Spanish troops.

Be assured that we are giving our outmost to release SOUTHAG as soon as possible. Have a look at those new units we have modeled after showcasing their respective division, and which haven't been shown so far:

Toybox Aces - Zontemuma
2025-07-07 Alpha 0.17

I don't know where to start. It was a lot work over the last few weeks, as a lot of things changed.

  • Added a new aircraft (loosely based on the Messerschmitt BF 109)

  • Added a secondary weapon (bombs, ready to be dropped)

  • Tweaked the AI autopilots

  • Messed up the flight physics for the BF 109. It still does not feel right at the moment.

  • Did **a lot** of balancing, still work in progress

  • Added the game mode "fixed targets". Still a lot to do

  • Added the first floor to House1

  • Added the basement to House1

  • Removed the L-shaped kidsroom

  • Added stairs / the staircase to House1. Handrails still missing

  • Added volumetric lighting / volumetric shadows to make light rays more beautiful

  • Added a system to add "secondary weapons" at arbitgrary points on each aircraft

  • Added some debug information (to be removed later)

  • Did a lot of GUI-stuff

  • Cleaned up the level structure and level loading sequence

  • Added some more assets to the storage room in House1

  • Added a lot of assets to the KidsRoom and Bathroom of House1

  • Messed up the Niagara collision settings of the BF 109. Have to repair this ASAP!

  • Reduced the audio volume of the 20mm cannon (in reality it was inaudible by the pilot due to engine noise)

  • Did a lot of clean-up

  • Disabled some **currently** unused UI-functions

  • Prepared the landing gear to be retractable. It is... nearly... working

  • Increased the ammount of ammo loaded to be a bit more like the original BF 109

  • Made the cockpit glow. Just for the looks.

  • Messed up the landing gear physics. Currently it is better to only "drop start". Going to fix that!

  • Played around with audio occlusion. You guessed it. A lot work to be done here.

  • Built a set of Steam capsules and all the assets required for the "coming soon" announcement

  • Oh, and published the "coming soon" announcement on Steam. Toybox Aces is visible now on Steam!

I know that many stuff is broken or not working as expected right now. But... hey, that's what the "Alpha" is meant to say, right?
