Creating an action-horror game is all about finding that delicate balance between keeping players on the edge of their seat and giving them just enough power to fight back.
In a game like Beneath, the goal is to make the player feel both vulnerable and capable at the same time.
It starts with pacing. Think of it like a rollercoaster—you don’t want non-stop action or constant terror, or else the player gets numb to it. Instead, we try to alternate between intense, heart-pounding combat sequences and slower, creeping moments of suspense.
It’s in those quieter moments that the fear really sinks in because the player doesn’t know when the next threat will hit.
Another big part of maintaining that balance is resource management. In action-heavy games, players can feel unstoppable if they have endless ammo and health. But in a horror game, we want them to feel like every bullet counts, like every enemy encounter could be their last.
It’s that sense of scarcity and uncertainty that makes combat moments even more intense.
Enemy design is where action and horror come together.
On one hand, the enemies need to be challenging to fight, but on the other hand, they should evoke fear. The best kind of enemies are the ones that make the player hesitate, that make them question if they’re ready to engage or if they should run.
The atmosphere plays a huge role too. Even when the action ramps up, we want the world to still feel oppressive and unsettling. Through lighting, sound, and environmental details, we aim to create a space where the player never feels truly safe, even in the heat of combat.
In the end, it’s all about balance. The player should feel like they’re walking a fine line between survival and disaster.
There’s a satisfaction in overcoming tough enemies, but we want the player to always feel a little on edge, knowing that the world around them is constantly trying to tip that balance back toward fear.
Hello to all of you who have been enjoying Tien Gow. I had planned to make this announcement a little earlier, but as I have been working on various things, the Steam Autumn Sale is just around the corner....
I realize how quickly time flies.
We are currently offering multiplayer as a beta feature in "Japanese Style Tien Gow". This will finally be released as an official feature!
As for that specific scheduled date... it will be Wednesday evening, November 27, 2024 (Japan time)!
Although we cannot confirm a specific time, due to the developer's circumstances, we would like to reflect the update "while it is still the 27th". And the timing of the update means that..."Japanese Style Tien Gow" will also participate in the Steam Autumn Sale!
If you haven't bought the game yet, we recommend that you wait until the sale is over to make sure you get the discounted price!
...Of course, you are also welcome to purchase the game at the regular price.
Now, there are a few things in the next update, including the addition of some titles and the implementation of a "Title Gacha"... but in this preview, I want to focus on a few smaller changes.
All of which will make the game more enjoyable.
The first is the ability to control your tiles while others are playing. This will allow the game to run more smoothly if you have already decided which tile to select in advance. Previously, you could not select a tile until it was your turn, so there was a bit of a "wait and see" feeling, but this will be eliminated.
The second is "the ability to cancel tile selection by right-clicking. Previously, if you wanted to select a different tile, you had to click on the selected tile again to change it. This will also be convenient, as it can be canceled with a single right-click.
The third is "the ability to display a final confirmation that the selected tile is to be played face-down when the face-down button is pressed while selecting a tile that would win if played face-up. We had a number of cases where players who were used to playing the game would try to play the game quickly and often accidentally flip a tile that was supposed to be up. This was an issue with the UI layout and interface design, but in order not to confuse existing players, we decided not to make any major changes to the layout and instead show a confirmation instead of just running the game as is. We hope that this will prevent many players from making a mistake and losing at a critical moment.
And the fourth is "a feature that displays the score difference from other players when you click on the scoreboard. When you check the difference with other players, you no longer have to calculate it in your head. However, if you are an experienced player, you may be able to figure it out just by looking... but we hope you will use this feature as one of the convenient functions.
These are the features that are added or changed to make the experience more comfortable, even if they are not very important. I would be happy if you could confirm the addition of various features related to "titles" by touching them directly on the day of the event.
Still in the midst of playtesting but the forced reset issue should be fixed. There should be no eexcuse to reach the void gods at this point. Additionally, there are some minor spell changes and new added elements and enemies.
