Grit and Valor - 1949 - gholland
Attention Commanders!

In Grit and Valor – 1949, each run pits your mech squad against overwhelming odds.

To liberate Europe from the evil Axis Forces, you’re going to need to make the most of every upgrade and enhancement you can get your hands on.

So buckle in!

Here's a 101 on the ins and outs of the progression system, and how your decisions can be the difference between disastrous defeats and valiant victories.

How Progression and Rewards Work

For fans of the Roguelite genre aspects of this may be familiar, but let's get into the specifics.

In Grit and Valor – 1949, there are three core aspects to the progression system:

  1. Mid-Run Progression:

During each campaign you’ll have the opportunity to boost your mechs with a choice of temporary end of level enhancements. You’ll also get the chance to buy temporary shop boosts and get narrative event rewards.
  2. End-of-Run Rewards:

When your run ends, you’ll bank a range of meta currencies to spend back at the Resistance Base. Occasionally, you’ll unlock new pilots, too.
  3. Between-Run Progression:

At the Resistance Base, you’ll spend your earned currency on mech modules that you can equip to permanently upgrade your mechs. It’s here that you’ll able to purchase new mechs, and level up your pilot abilities.

Now, let's explore these in more detail...

Mid-Run Progression

In Grit and Valor – 1949, mid-run progression is all about building up temporary enhancements to increase your chances of success, while banking Black Coins to spend along the way.

Enhancements

Enhancements are temporary stat upgrades for your mechs that last until your run ends. At the end of each successful mission, you’ll be presented with a choice of three.

Enhancements range from Common to Legendary and can offer big boosts to a variety of mech stats including damage, damage resistance, fire rate, critical damage and much more.

Remember to choose wisely. Picking enhancements that suit your mech squad and your playstyle is essential. If you’re dissatisfied with your roll, spend some Black Coins to reroll.

It’s important to note that opting to take on Advanced Combat and Elite Combat missions will give you a greater chance of picking up rare enhancement. These missions are far more deadly, however, so we’ll leave it to you to weigh up the risk vs reward.

Scenarios

Between levels, you’ll occasionally be given the choice to avoid combat altogether and instead progress by choosing a ‘Scenario’ - a narrative dilemma that requires your Commander instincts.

Scenarios will vary in content – and we wouldn’t want to spoil any narrative bits - but in this example, you find a broken Axis mech and can choose between salvaging it for a random enhancement and using its part to repair your mechs or give them a health boost for the remainder of your run.

The Scavenger’s Shop

Another mid-run opportunity for you to enhance your squad is the Scavenger.

Like Scenarios, you’ll encounter the Scavenger on the campaign map between missions and be given the option trade your Black Coins for enhancements or Scrap. These run-ins with the Scavenger are rare, but could save your squad in a pinch.

End-of-Run Rewards

End-of-Run Rewards come in the form of Scrap, Valor, and Blueprints.

These are the essential resources you’ll need to use to acquire lasting upgrades back at the Resistance Base, such as new Mechs, enhanced Pilot abilities, and Upgrade Modules for your existing Mechs.

The amount of Scrap, Valor, and Blueprints you gain will depend on your run's success.

Tackling those Advanced and Elite missions, achieving your bonus goals, and eliminating more Axis forces will increase the amount you receive at the end of a run.

Here’s a little more on what each currency is used for:

  • Scrap - A currency used to purchase Upgrade Modules from the Junkyard Shop at the Resistance Base.
  • Valor - Valor is applied to individual Pilots at the Pilot Barracks to increase their skills.
  • Blueprints - Blueprints can be used to either unlock new mechs or buy traits for them at the Mech Yard.

Between Run Progression

Here’s where you can make a lasting impact. Upgrades you make to your Mech Squad back at Resistance Base are permanent. Let’s dive into what you can do.

Buy Mech Modules at the Junkyard Shop

Spend your scrap wisely at the Junkyard Shop on Upgrade Modules for your Mechs. Like Enhancements, Modules range from Common to Legendary.

Apply Modules and Traits at the Mech Yard

Once you’ve purchased some Upgrade Modules, head to the Mech Yard to have Reggie Steele apply them to your mechs.

Optimise your squad however you see fit.

In this example, the Commander has wisely addressed one of the Thunderhead’s weaknesses, movement speed, by equipping a +30% Module.

Unlock New Mechs

At the Mech Yard – if you have acquired enough blueprints, you can use them to requisition the development of powerful new mechs.

Upgrade Pilot Abilities

Next stop, the Pilot Barracks.

Providing your Pilots with the Valor they need to succeed is part of every capable Commander’s pre-run ritual.

Here, Emilia Rochefort’s Mechano-arm ability has been boosted. In combat, you’ll now be able to use the ability more often and it’ll repair more damage.

---

Congratulations, Commander. You’ve passed your Progression & Upgrades 101 with flying colours.

Now what’re you waiting for? Go and apply what you’ve learned in the field.

Let ‘em have it!

Hello once again bowlers! Today we are throwing down the "Over-Achiever Update". This update contains some big additions to add more rewards and customization to your bowling experience. Lets explore some of these new features in more detail...

Firstly, we have achievements! Complete challenges within the game and unlock achievements both in game and on Steam.

Next up with have ball Customization, when you unlock an achievement you will be rewarded with a new customization option in the form of a new color scheme, pattern or energy color! Create your own personalized ball and put it to the test in the arena.

Finally we are letting two new opponents loose in the arena! The Bumpin and the Jumpin'. Avoid bowling directly into the Bumpin he will deflect your balls and release a deadly shock-wave, instead jump on his head for a large vertical boost. As for the Jumpin' he will stomp his way towards you spreading shock-waves of his own that you will need to avoid.

That's all for the major new features, but this update also sees the return of the time attack mode from our summer next fest demo and a bunch of additions to improve the game on Steamdeck (we are now Steamdeck verified by the way!). On top of that we have also implemented a whole host of graphical and gameplay fixes!

With the release of this update we will be starting new leaderboards so there has never been a better time to jump in and rack up a high score! Check out the full patch notes bellow and happy bowling!

Features
  • Customization screen, acessable through the main menu.
  • 48 Achievements to be unlocked by completing a wide range of challenges!
  • 51 Customization options (3 default and 49 to unlock!)
  • New Enemy: Bumpin, a mean pinball bumper who is impervious to direct balls.
  • New Enemy: Jumpin', an old pin with the ability create shock-waves when they jump.
  • Return of the "Time Attack" mode from our Next Fest Demo, find it by using the blue arrows on the main menu.
  • Revamped leaderboard screen, you can now toggle between Standard and Time Attack leaderboards.
  • Leaderboards have been reset, existing players do not worry! Your scores are archived with Steam's leaderboard system and we are looking into a way of showing this archive in game.
Graphical Changes
  • Two new statues around the arena commemorating two of the arenas champions!
  • The shiny surfaces in the game now reflect correctly.
  • The "How To Play" screen will now display the correct glyphs for your current input device.
  • Anywhere controller glyphs appear; they will now automatically switch to Steamdeck buttons if playing on Steamdeck.
  • Fixed some minor visual bugs with the mortar pin.
  • Small visual improvements to the control rebinding screen.
  • Gates in the arena that are dark will no longer overlap other FX.
  • Improved the size and readability of various UI elements.
Bug Fixes

  • Tallys in the game over screen now have larger text and appear in two columns to prevent overlapping ui elements.

AI Kills All Humans Playtest - Bugala
Changes to previous versions:

- There is now a message telling to those with more than one monitor that there might be a bug problem, and how to fix it.
- You can also choose your screen now.
- Tutorial messages have been reworked a lot, hopefully now new players will get the idea of how to play the game and not get stuck because of not taking HP Upgrade.
- There is now settings menu in MAP screen too (Ugly, but works for now)
- You can also choose to lower your difficulty from MAP settings. (next update will have an option to actually choose difficulty level when you start the game, didn't make it to this one yet).
- Bonus Simulations are now colored different in map from rest of the simulations.
- Hopefully fixed the problem of incorrectly calculating if player failed several times in a row or not (fix is untested)

- Once upon a time there was a twitch streamer called Giza666, and she really wanted to see how the story of the game would end, but ah, alas! When you have a skill issue, try as you might, she just couldn't get it done but was miserably stuck in a certain simulation. This simulation has now been updated and made slightly easier based on the playlog.txt she sent me. This, plus the possibility to lower the difficulty and this way get even 2 more upgrades more with her save file, will surely make it a breeze for her to get through now.

- Thanks to all the other streamers too: Plabs_, SpoonyPlays, MentalDefenestration, Grasshyren, Cifex, all your playtests and your audience helped shape this update, although some stuff are still only coming. (hope I didn't miss any)

Notice to those using old save files to continue playing with this one:
You might, or more likely, will, see some tutorial messages you have no use to anymore. This is because I went with assumption that people play from beginning, and hence see them in right spots, but if you continue old save file, you might see them when replaying old simulations for example.
