Return to Moria will be arriving on Steam after delivering on nearly 10 months of our roadmap. This includes quality-of-life improvements, bug fixes, new features, additional content, and tuning changes. If you haven’t checked out the game since its release, now is a great time to start playing with the upcoming Steam version.
Update 8/22/24
Since we wrote this article, we held a Forge Talk as well as released a new Quality of Life Showcase - please check those out! -----------------
And now, let's go through the major changes from the 1.0 launch in October 2023 to the Steam version:
Crossplay
That's right, the Steam version includes crossplay with Xbox, PS5, and Epic Game Store players. Check out this article for more details. 7/18 Crossplay Blog Link
Sandbox Worlds
Now there are two ways to play. Campaign worlds offer an authentic, mostly linear adventure that tells a new Lord of the Rings story. Sandbox worlds provide a more procedural, non-linear generation of Moria that is narrative-lite but rich in freedom. Play either one, but we believe Sandbox plus Hard difficulty makes for a great NewGame+ option.
All New Map
A completely revamped map makes it easier to understand where you are and where you need to go, plus we’ve added color blind options.
Improved Combat Feel & Rewards
New sound effects, visual effects, and tuning improve the previously floaty feel of combat, making it more grounded. We’ve also adjusted the frequency of combat encounters (it was WAY too often in 1.0). Additionally, we’ve added many new unique drops to orc fights, ensuring you always get rewarded for taking out a patrol or camp.
End Boss Fight Overhauled
No spoilers, but our first major update back in December overhauled the final boss fight to be more satisfying and less buggy.
Difficulty Settings
The game was often too hard for solo players and too easy for groups. Now, players can adjust everything from combat difficulty to resource drops. Fine-tune it for your group, or just play for the story.
Inventory and Storage Quality-of-Life
You can now sort your inventory, use ‘deposit similar,’ and hold the pickup button to grab everything you see. Plus, we’ve added new chests and increased stack sizes.
Building is Much Snappier
We’ve not only re-tuned stability and building part snaps, but we’ve also overhauled major sections of the world to make building easier. Both the feel of building and the creative possibilities have significantly improved.
Updated Cooking
This fall with the upcoming Steam release, we’ll update the cooking system. Check this out for more details. 6/21 Cooking Blog Link
Core Loop Tuning and Exploration Rewards
Ten months of playing, observing, and reading feedback has led to a lot of iteration. We’ve adjusted many loot drops, crafting costs, and spawn rates—too many to list them all! We’ve also added more items to collect and craft as you explore. Check this out for more details. 6/28 New Stuff Blog Link
Pause the Game
One of our most requested features is the ability to pause while offline. It's a game-changer for solo players who really do need to take the trash out—no more asking twice!
More Background Music
It’s not Lord of the Rings without a sweeping score. We added more music for roaming around, combat, and relaxing by the hearth.
More Content & Environments
We added dozens of new weapons, armor variants, helmets, shields, base decorations, building parts, and lighting options. It's easier than ever to kit out your Dwarf to look unique and live in their own Dwarf home. Many locations in the game are now more diverse, with new nooks and crannies to discover.
Stability and Quality
On top of all this, we’ve also fixed over 1,200 bugs, including improving our multiplayer network code and save systems.
Explore Moria like never before and experience the enhancements we've made. We look forward to seeing you in the mines! To see all of our blogs, updates, the latest news and information about Return to Moria, check out https://www.returntomoria.com/news
We added free play mode! You can't use it in the normal multiplayer balloon, it has its own lobby! You can play in any level without any time limits or game modes.
In freeplay, you are free to join mid-game, swap scenes, or even use any equipment you earned from the battlepass!
There's also a new Freeplay-exclusive "Doolympic Park" map, with 5 different obstacle courses, with leaderboards for whoever completes them the fastest!
We are thrilled to announce the release of the long-awaited Gore + AI update for the Experimental Branch of Blood Trail! This update encompasses thousands of changes and improvements. While we’ve provided an overview of the major updates, detailing every modification would be nearly impossible.
This update is currently available for the Experimental Branch only. To access it, right-click on Blood Trail in Steam, go to Properties, click on Betas, and select the Experimental Branch from the dropdown list. Please note that you will now see additional launch options—make sure to select the one indicating it is for the Experimental Branch, as it will not work otherwise.
Graphical Changes
Completely redesigned and rebuilt NPC enemies from the ground up.
Introduced a new gore system.
Added new clothing and character models.
Implemented new animations.
Reworked three Survival Mode maps for gameplay and optimization: Heartbreaker, Paint Thinner, and Believer.
Added two new sandbox maps: Gray Matter and Doppelganger.
C.A.P.E.C.O.D. System
Introducing the C.A.P.E.C.O.D. System (Clinically Accurate Physically Expressive Cause Of Death System). This system moves beyond traditional HP, representing real-world health markers to make NPC deaths feel more realistic and justified.
Enemies experience a rhythmic flow of data representing various critical processes in the human body, including lung function, blood volume, cardiovascular health, and critical areas such as kidneys, liver, and arteries. Pain tolerance is also considered.
All these factors culminate in simulated brain activity, supported by these other simulations and disruptable in various ways.
This system allows different types of damage to interact and express themselves in a coherent and meaningful manner.
Gameplay Changes
Rebuilt enemy AI for enhanced behavior and strategy.
Created a new enemy damage calculation system for greater medical accuracy.
Enemies now vocalize during encounters.
Gameplay is more challenging and rewarding, emphasizing movement and cover for realistic and skillful shootouts.
Missing/Upcoming Features
Two Survival maps (Dreamcatcher and Homewrecker) are temporarily disabled for updates and optimization.
RAID mode is temporarily disabled and will return soon.
Melee enemies (those using melee weapons and fists) are disabled while their AI and movesets are developed.
Future updates will introduce new varied faces, looks, hairstyles, and outfits for enemies.
Additional maps and weapons will be introduced before the Story Mode.
Please remember that the Experimental Branch is for new and potentially unstable gameplay. Incomplete features and game-breaking bugs are common. Builds that appear on the Experimental Branch have often not been fully optimized and may exhibit framerate issues. It's vital that we hear back from you about any performance issues, bugs, or other problems you may encounter. Please report issues in #Bug-Reports on our Official Discord Server.
Note: If you are experiencing an issue with the exe file when attempting to launch, please take the following steps:
Ensure you have selected the Experimental Branch (instructions above)
Restart Steam (if the problem persists, it's likely that the cache needs to refresh.)
If you aren't being prompted and the error is happening, check Blood Trail properties > General and make sure it is set to always ask for a launch option.
We just wrapped up an intense 3-day marathon at BitSummit in Japan, and it was nothing short of legendary! We hooked up a Steam Deck to a monitor and put Cyber Paradise to the ultimate test.
For three epic days, from 10 AM to 5 PM, our booth was swarmed with enthusiastic gamers! The Steam Deck held up like a champ, powering through continuous gameplay without breaking a sweat.
Highlights:
10 AM to 5 PM: Non-stop action (almost!).
3 Days: Of near-continuous play sessions.
Steam Deck: Proving Cyber Paradise's NEW DEMO is not just playable but thrives on it!
If you ever doubted the Steam Deck’s capabilities, doubt no more! Cyber Paradise is totally compatible with Steam Deck. Get ready to dive into a world of non-stop cyberpunk action, whether you’re at home or on the go.
PS1: This announcement exists because Steam requires a Steam Event posting to provide Steam Deck compatibility info. We just want to let you know… yeah… Cyber Paradise is totally playable on Steam Deck (with cloud save)!
PS2: It was a blast at BitSummit. Presses came by, we were interviewed and there are now at least 14 pieces of media coverage on Cyber Paradise from multiple countries! We can't be more grateful! Check out the pieces at https://cyberparadise.net/!
PS3: If you missed our previous announcement on the launch of Cyber Paradise's NEW DEMO, here's the launch trailer:
PS4: As mentioned in the previous announcement, CyberParadise will be part of the #PixElatedFestival starting in 4 days, hosted by Brave At Night Visit http://pixelatedfest.com for the complete line-up of games!
Thank you all for being part of this fantastic journey in Erannorth Renaissance Early Access!
We have a long way ahead, and before I start following our roadmap, I am going through all the initial feedback and suggestions. We'll eventually get into a more regular rhythm of updates that expand the world, enhance your interactions and footprint in it, and implement various QoL additions you want to see in the game while also fixing any issues or annoyances.
But in the meantime, what is a launch, if not dull, without its share of 0-day hotfixes? This small patch addresses some of the issues that you reported. You can read more details in the patch notes below:
You can read more details in the patch notes below:
26/07/24 # 0.5.41
Fixed an issue where custom characters' names in the dialogue system were stored as "You" instead of their actual names, leading to some awkward introductions. The fix should also work on your Saved characters.
Fixed an issue with the achievement-related shortcut choices in Ennathil's Camp not showing up correctly.
Fixed an issue with custom characters' bios not scaling correctly in specific resolutions.
Tools and Adventuring Gear will no longer show as "Junk" as their category but will be correctly categorized as Tools or Adventuring Gear, respectively.
As avid fans of the Steam Deck, we ensured that Earl vs. the Mutants was optimized for it from the start. From our first build on, we have tested the game on Steam Deck, mouse and keyboard, and Xbox and PlayStation controllers to accommodate as many players as possible.
If you have a Steam Deck, you'll find that Earl vs. the Mutants runs smoothly and provides a great gaming experience!
