Sun Haven - kdodge
Hi everyone!

It's Tavielle, from Pixel Sprout Studios!

We’re excited to share another update for Patch 1.4!

The new content for Patch 1.4 is available now on the Public Beta Environment (PBE), and we’re so close to finalizing the patch for full release soon!

Patch 1.4 will be released once it’s stabilized on the PBE and we’re able to make this massive update as bug-free as possible.

Before we take a look at the patch contents, we want to let everyone know that we are still hiring for more sprouts here at Pixel Sprout Studios! Some of our open roles include an Executive Assistant, Level Designer, Pixel Artists, Game Designer, UI/UX Designer, and more. For more information or to apply, please head to our website below!

Now let’s jump into all the new content for Patch 1.4!

A brand new town awaits you from down in the Brinestone Deeps!

Brinestone Deeps:
As seen in our Discord and Twitter teasers, there’s an entire new region to explore with two new Romanceables in Patch 1.4!

A mysterious whirlpool has formed in the ocean down near the beach on your farm. Diving into the whirlpool will take you to the new region - a sprawling underwater world inhabited by nautical denizens and giant, lurking beasts.

If you’re brave enough to traverse the wilderness, you’ll eventually find your way to a sunken city - the Brinestone Deeps, a town in the midst of a takeover by an eerie and malevolent adversary.

Embark on a brand new adventure to save the Brinestone Deeps, culminating in a battle against this imposing enemy. You’ll meet some new friends along the way, and make a few very important (and very powerful) enemies! As you fight to save the Brinestone Deeps, you’ll be able to access a new Bulletin Board with new Bulletin Board quests, and visit some of the amazing Brinestone shops - including a new general store, a magic staff shop selling weapons for mages, and a magic armor shop to buff up your stats!

Last but definitely not least, after completing the Brinestone Deeps quest line, you will unlock the brand new romanceable characters: Karish and Zaria.

Awww, what a cute baby!!

Kids:
Coming in Patch 1.4 is one of the most requested features from the community: Kids! Once you’re married and have your house upgraded to Tier 3, your spouse can express their interest in having a child. (This is completely optional, and you can say no!)

If you say yes, head to the Wishing Well in Sun Haven’s Eastern Wilderness to make the wish come true. The following day, a brand new room will appear in your Tier 3 home with a teeny-tiny new occupant. You will need to nurture and take care of your baby to help it grow into a toddler.

As a toddler, they can explore Sun Haven, have quests, ask you to bring them certain items, hang out with the neighboring children, and even listen to Jun’s stories at the library! Toddlers are highly customizable, so you can give them adorable new outfits and customization options to help them fit right into your family. If you welcome the chaos, we’ve also decided to leave all customization options unlocked, just in case you want a half-naga, half-demon baby. Who are we to deny you of your cursed child dreams?!

A new currency, secret shops, and new fish to catch in the sewers!

The Black Market:
The sewer’s manhole cover to the right of the Sun Haven Cafe is now open and leads to the grungy Sun Haven sewers! Once inside, you can catch sewer-specific fish to make a profit. If you continue forward, you will find the secret Sun Haven Black Market!

Here you can buy and sell certain items for a unique currency called Black Bottle Caps. These Black Bottle Caps can be used to purchase furniture, clothing, and even rare eggs that hatch into different pets! There’s also a merchant who will offer to exchange your mana for health or your health for mana, which means all of you min-maxers out there can finally reach the full mana build of your dreams!

The new romanceables are here: Karish the Shark Amari, and Zaria the Water Elemental!

Romance:
There are two new Romanceables joining the large cast of Sun Haven in Patch 1.4!

  • Karish, the Aspiring Hero - A Shark Amari who looks for the best in this harsh world, Karish aspires to be the hero the Brinestone Deeps needs. Can this over-eager hero in training learn to temper expectations and help his community in ways that really matter?
  • Zaria, the Redwash Mercenary - A Water Elemental known beneath the waves for her cutthroat attitude, Zaria has learned that loyalty is best sold for cash and friendship is a fool's dream. But does she truly feel that way, or is there something this ruthless corsair is trying to hide?
These new characters have dates, events, bulletin board quests, and tons of new dialogue for you to experience!

These two new romanceable characters aren’t all we have in store! We’ve also updated many aspects of romance in Sun Haven, starting with being able to sleep in the same bed as your spouse! Once your spouse moves into your Tier 3 house, you now have the option to sleep in your spouse’s bed. You can also share a special kiss with your partner in new goodnight kiss cutscenes before turning in for the day. How sweet!

There are also new seasonal walk path animations for all romanceable characters that will breathe life into the world of Sun Haven. Some of these animations include Claude playing the piano, Lucia sitting at her desk signing papers, Anne polishing a diamond, and more! These animations aren’t just seasonal - they also add ways for you to connect with the traits, hobbies, and magic of the Romanceables in Sun Haven.

Romanceable characters will now have positive and negative reactions when you accept or decline hangout and date requests! Additionally, spouses now have unique vows and more dialogue during your wedding, as well as rejection responses if you decide to say no to getting married at the altar. (You monsters!)

Sharing a wholesome kiss with my sweet, scaly husband.

Miscellaneous Updates:
  • Added the Great Vault! Gone are the days of running out of or misplacing DLC items, because now you can literally jump right into your Sell Portal and be whisked away to the Great Vault, the jewel of the Great City! Here, you can also browse all of the DLCs in Sun Haven, buy extra DLC pack items for gold, and get taken directly to the DLC Steam Store pages to browse the full selection of DLC packs available.

  • Added Trash Cans and Destructibles. There are now interactable trash cans around Sun Haven, Nel’Vari, and Withergate. Be careful not to get caught digging through the trash, though… unless you don’t mind hearing rumors about your stinky behavior. Additionally, there are new crates and barrels around all 4 towns (Hehe, you read that right! FOUR towns now!) that can be hit with your sword or scythe. Once broken, they can drop materials and other items!

  • Added Riddle Quests. Discover new puzzles and riddles that have been hidden around the world! These new riddles offer exclusive rewards, so keep your eyes peeled for these secret quests.

  • Various bug fixes. We’ve fixed tons of bugs and other issues, including: automatic collectors, automatic feeders, and feeding stations not working as intended, Shang’s first date causing you to get accidentally murdered by enemies, removed the Farmer Table’s spooky ghost animation issue, quest items not being given, Snaccoons going missing, miscellaneous typos, crafting issues with health, mana, and fish, and more!
Starting now, Patch 1.4’s new content is live on the PBE. If you’d like to see all the new content coming in Patch 1.4, you can join the Public Beta Environment (PBE) and help us test the patch before release! Join our Discord and check out #pbe-info for more information on how to opt in!

On a development note, we’re so excited to share that Patch 1.4 is the final patch filled with major features that will be released before the Nintendo Switch port releases. This means that no major content will be added to Sun Haven after Patch 1.4 until Sun Haven is released on the Switch!

Any fixes that the community helps us with for this patch will help improve the Switch build, and we are very appreciative of everyone taking time to help us test out all of the new content that was introduced in this patch.

Thank you so much for your patience as we’ve worked behind the scenes to bring all of these major features and updates to Patch 1.4! This is the biggest update we’ve ever had, and we’re so excited to finally share it with you all!

Have a great week, and we’ll see you soon for the full release!

Resurrection Island: Love and Victory - 🤔
Fixed the issue of lag in touch CG during battles, but there may still be some
DR4X - UntrustedLife
In my last devlog i was like "the next couple weeks should calm down so i can work on the game more" or some such thing to that effect.
Well I was wrong. Work stayed super ridiculously busy this week, delaying game dev further.
*sigh*
Sometimes i feel like giving up ya know.
Anyway.
Put out a tiny update today,
New batch of art is in, its great woo.

(There are 3 new ones but i won't paste them all it will ruin the fun!)

Changes:
-art woo

-made tile effect descriptions a consistent text size

-buffed rosebud tavern more

-Improved hints for things, ya know none of these weird things about DR4X are unintentional right? They all have meaning they are all pointing to something. Ugh
Added more hints as folks clearly need more guidance towards finding the good and bad endings. There are points where i literally S=G P=X E=Q L=L L=L it out for ya ya know. Like 8 times or something. Heh, maybe not 8 times, Its hard to get people invested in something so cryptic.

*deep breath*

So, I kinda know how the next chapter will go now. I've got outlines for all of them, but getting there is the real hard part. Looks like it’ll involve some noderooms antics as that seems to have gotten some good feedback from folks, but you’ll also need to have gotten the good or bad endings—something only about 0.6% of players have managed so far! This might mean there’s a spot where players are dropping off, or maybe the unconventional victories needed for these endings are just too tricky to figure out. Either way, i’ve got some tweaking to do!

This small update will start to fascillitate that, though it updates the ending you get with new hints. SInce i know many of you have gotten those endings so wont get these popups, heres a hint for those who got a bad ending (AFAIK no one has gotten the good ending yet, I know one person got very close though)

You are playing on a terminal in DR4X, if you know his name, TYPE IT THERE (On the main menu) and something will happen and also do that during the ending sequence (something happens in both places heh).

For those who have only gotten a neutral ending:

The dr4x codex can guide you to all the endings and hints at what you need to do, some of it is encrypted, so get out a pen and paper and if you want to figure out the secrets, actually try to figure it out, figure out the ciphers etc. There are enough hints there that you don't need to figure out the cipher itself and instead can essentially treat them all as alphanumeric subsitution ciphers. And to get the ending you dont even need to figure out the ciphers at all, just read the signs and hints. the ciphers just make it easier

I will be adding hints to the chapter 1 unconventional victories to nodenet, if you know what that is heh good job.

Also, ive decided ill be adding achievements for each mission, unconventional and standard, as it will help me get an idea as to where people are getting stuck. And ill also do the same for a bunch of skirmish goals.

...
I've also decided that Chapter Two will be locked behind achieving either a good or bad ending in the first chapter. If you haven't unlocked either of these, you won’t be able to access this new content. It’s as straightforward as that. Neutral endings will keep it locked. The reason for this is that achieving these endings is a crucial part of the game—perhaps the most important part. Therefore, I simply can't let you proceed to the next chapter without having secured either the good or bad ending to Chapter 1

The truth is, it’s becoming a bit frustrating that no one has figured out the way to do this yet. I know these are challenging, but I genuinely believe you can figure them out and this was meant to be a TUTORIAL campaign. About a thousand of you have downloaded DR4X across all platforms, including Itch.io, so there’s a solid amount of people who could dive in and could help others actually get to the cool stuff. That said, maybe we’re facing a collective hurdle here.

This isn’t just about progressing through a game—it’s about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible within a game. I'm here, rooting for you to break through these barriers. And if i get frusterated enough i might just say fuck it and make a guide myself.

As a small indie dev, it’s already tough enough to get anyone to care about what I make. Let alone to actually put effort in to figuring out the deeper parts of it. I know that if someone managed to record the good or bad endings and the process to get there, way more people might be willing to give the game a shot. And if not, well, I guess I’m kinda doing it for the art. I'm lucky to have a day job that pays well enough that I don’t have to worry about whether a lot of people play my game—it’s just a passion project. I'm lucky in many ways; I own my own home, have an adorable doggo, a literal white picket fence, and a supportive family, although some relatives used to wonder why I was creating roguelikes instead of 'cool 3D games.' . Maybe it’s a passion project with puzzles so difficult nobody will figure them out until after I'm gone or something, but heck, it would be so cool if someone did.

Anyway, skirmish updates are still a thing, my focus isn’t shifting. It’s just that the focus varies based on my motivation and what part of the game I work on at any given moment.

A lot of indie developers gain attention by making YouTube videos, but for me, given the small free time I have, it's really just a choice between working on the game or making YouTube videos. I can't do both without risking burnout and potentially quitting altogether. So I don't like to think about "how can i get popular" its a waste of mind power tbh heh it just makes me depressed.

I used to make videos regularly; they were unscripted. Maybe I can go back to that? But then again, the time I would spend on videos could (As stated earlier) be spent working on this massively ambitious game. I'm 28 now, and I can't do this forever. I don't know how someone like Tarn Adams stays sane. I used to think it's by switching tasks within the overarching project to prevent burnout, and doing 'end of month projects'—that approach worked for a while, but I didn't keep it up. Again, every second spent on something else feels like a wasted second in terms of DR4X development. I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I want to work on DR4X, and that's pretty much all I want to do. If it means languishing in obscurity until I die, that's okay. I've made something cool—at least, it's cool to me and to some people maybe, unless all those positive reviews are just people being nice, which could be true. It's something I've poured my heart and soul into, 4 years of it. I'm happy with how the project has turned out. I'm proud that people like the noderooms stuff. I'm just happy anyone at all in this shitstain of a world gives my coffee-adled brain the time of day at all.

Did you know? There's a message hidden in the game for someone really special to me, who I met when I was 12 years old. I don't even know if they're still alive or if they will ever see the message. But it's there. And so is DR4X, I guess. I dont think they were the videogame type heh.

I also lost a friend of mine when I was in university. There’s a message for them in the game too. They'll never see it, of course, but it’s there for them, a monument i guess. He was passionate and really good at counter strike, heh.
I guess you could say he was TENACIOUS, at least.

There's also a message in the game dedicated to the late wife of a friend of mine. She passed away a few years ago, and she will of course never see it. Even though he (the friend) helps me on this project by doing 2D art, I'm not sure he'll ever see it either. Wild, right? In fact I think that if he reads this, this will be the first time hes heard that that is a thing.

I'm tearing up just thinking about it, to be honest.

Maybe DR4X is a message to me.

If I died tomorrow, would I just be a nobody? Would the game disappear into the ether? I don't think anyone would even bother archiving it TBH. Or maybe, many years from now, someone will appreciate the art. I would guess not, but...

I have to do it for them. ya know.

Black Mesa - [BMS] Adam-Bomb
Hello again, scientist!

Well this has been excruciating. We apologize for any scares and the inconvenience of having the game get reported as a virus.

We have fixed the issue and also put up a number of other patches! Here are the patch notes:

Antivirus False Positive FIXED!
We’ve implemented a temporary fix to stop antivirus programs flagging bms.exe as a false positive. We have a permanent fix in the works, so that this issue will not happen again.

Downloading the update is all you need to do to have the game NOT get reported by your antivirus or Windows Defender (sometimes you have to restart Steam).

Temporary Removal of DXVK
As a result of our antivirus hotfix, we had to temporarily disable DXVK as a launch option. We plan to bring this back online as soon as possible in a future patch.

Improved Controller Support
  • Fixed an issue which prevented some Steam Deck users from climbing ladders or using trams
  • Fixed an issue where custom controller bindings were not persisting
  • Fixed an issue where controller camera movement would not obey iron sights sensitivity
  • Reworked Gyro Aim which is now handled separately in accordance with Steam Input best practices
  • Also added “in_gyro_look_yaw_sensitivity” and “in_gyro_look_pitch_sensitivity” console commands for controlling gyro sensitivity.
  • Revamped default controller layouts:
  • Official Layout for Black Mesa - Standard Controls. Our official bindings for devices without gyro support
  • Official Layout for Black Mesa - Standard Controls. Our official bindings for devices with gyro support
  • Official Layout for Black Mesa - Steam Deck Controls. Our official bindings for Steam Deck, adding trackpad support for the main menu
  • New Steam Input Game Actions:
    • “Quick tripmine” - for quickly placing tripmines.
    • “Quick frag” - for quickly throwing frags.
    • “Use crowbar” - for quick crowbar switching.
  • Added a console command, “steam_input_show_bindings” which will bring up the Steam Input configurator via the Steam Overlay.
  • A helpful guide on controller troubleshooting with Steam can be found here

Gameplay
  • Fixed an issue where auto-aim would aim at items the player was holding (like ground sentries)
  • Adjusted auto aim values in skill.cgf to have a longer range and be more magnetic

Dedicated Server Fix Soon
  • Still testing internally but we did fix:
  • Build process for dedicated servers (a compile switch was missing)
  • This should resolve some crashing issues with dedicated servers

Auto-Aim
As mentioned in the patch notes, we completely overhauled the auto-aim feature within the game. This can be configured by changing console settings in the game. Details here.

If you would like to change the settings for the auto-aim permanently, all you have to do is go to Black Mesa\bms\cfg\skill.cfg and edit the numbers at the bottom of the text file.

We are interested to hear what people think of the auto-aim (most of us are terrible at playing the game with controllers).

Known Issues

Video Settings Crash
We are aware that if you change certain video settings WHILE in game, it can crash the game to the main menu and not let you resume the autosave it just created. We are looking into this!

Some UI Elements Need Localization
New HUD elements and controller options need to be localized

Invalid Game Configuration
If you get a message like below, simply restart Steam and re-launch the game.
