From today we will begin telling you about the heroes of this world. And what better start than from Dragonero himself: scout Ian Aranill!

Ian Aranill: the Imperial Scout with a noble soul
Ian is a man of quiet disposition with a strong sense of honor. Trained from an early age, he is a skilled fighter.
A hardened traveler, Ian explores the lands of Erondàr together with two faithful companions, the orc Gmor and the elf Sera. His role as an imperial scout allows him a fair amount of freedom of action in the various quests he undertakes for the Erondarian Empire.
His missions are sometimes joined by his sister Myrva Aranille and the luresindo Alben.
You will soon get to know these characters as well.

Ian's story
A human belonging to the noble family of Dragon Slayers, a lineage famous for their ruthless hunt for the last Sentient Dragons. For unknown reasons, he gave up his military career to become an imperial scout, handling secret missions on behalf of the empire. He lives in Solian, an important seafaring city, when he is not intent on one of his many travels.

The weapon Ian uses, a bastard sword marked with the frieze of a rampant dragon. When bathed in the blood of a dragon its blade turned black, no longer icy to the touch but warm as if endowed with the very life that its use extinguishes.
The sword needs no sharpening and exudes a dark aura full of blood lust. For Ian, it is not only a formidable weapon but also a burden that always threatens to drop him into a grip made of pure violence.

Inside the dungeon Ian can make himself valuable with the reconnaissance skill that allows him to reveal hidden items within a room. This will allow him to find hidden traps and monsters but will cost more exploration time.

Ian possesses various skills useful in battle; a general overview of the skills will be given here. Try them out in the demo to find out all their parameters!
  • Vertical Slash: causes slashing and necrotic damage and ignores opponent's defenses
  • Side Slash: causes slashing and necrotic damage and ignores opponent's defenses, applies wounded status
  • Lunging: causes piercing and necrotic damage and ignores opponent's defenses
  • Crooked: causes slashing damage and applies unarmed status
  • Throwing knife: causes piercing damage
  • Lasso: Does no damage but applies the immobilized status

In this patch we have improved and fixed the following:

Misc:
  • Increased the size of flying enemies for better hit response
  • Decreased medicine level required to pick Licorice and Meadowsweet
  • Craft up to 5 recipes at a time
  • Improved tooltip item comparison
  • Fixed an input action queue issue

Action queue disable: We have found a certain issue related to the action queue, that is, if two actions like a roll and a stab are executed almost simultaneously, the roll is being executed and the stab will be automatically executed after the roll. A new option called 'Disabled Input Action Queue' was added, that disables the input action queue. If the queue is disabled an action executed during a roll will NOT be executed at the end of the roll.

Future plans: For this year we still have two patches planned. Make sure to stay tuned!

Hi, everyone. Welcome to another week's developer's diary.

Before we start, let's take a moment to mourn the passing of the world-famous Akira Toriyama, the author of Dragon Ball. On March 1, 2024, Toriyama died from acute subdural hematoma, at the age of 68. His funeral was held privately with only his family as attendees. His death was announced by his production company Bird Studio one week later on March 8. Thus, we only know that recently. It's the end of another era. We once lived in an era with him. Now this era is no more.

However, have you really seen the full Dragon Ball animation for once? There are many different versions outside, in the US, Germany, France, and many different parts of the world. All of them are more or less censored from the original versions in the name of protecting the audience from bad influence while actually denying the whole and complete experience of such a masterpiece. We live on the same planet. We watch animations, play video games, and see movies of the same name. Yet, what we get is different. Because someone out there does not want us to see the same thing, they make our prospect be manipulated to their liking. They try to play God, denying us from sharing the same memory, making us unable to understand each other, as if an uncensored original piece of artwork is a Tower of Babel that will challenge them.

Yet, do you believe there was once upon a time, there was no censorship?
If you do, type in "I want to believe." in the game's console command and you can unlock all the faith beliefs and tenets of the game. It's a phrase from X-File. So, we also get a new faith to worship aliens because of that.

It's an Atheism faith as it believes all gods are just their advanced alien overlords.
Yet, the followers of this faith can pray. Although there may be no divines listening, their alien overlord out there may somehow listen in mysterious ways. Thus, they also get a quite different prayer. They may pray for an orbital bombardment upon their enemies. If they are very devoted, maybe their alien overlords will even answer that. It's an instant act which means they can try to pray multiple times in one turn during a battle, burning both their devotion and the HP of their enemies very quickly.

Now, let's get back to the X-File. do you know, such a television series with all the conspiracy theories, sometimes blood and gores, sometimes exposed and naked bodies, and sometimes quite politically incorrect, can once actually be on TV in mainland China? Don't be surprised, in that era, there were also very violent (towards today's standards) Japanese animes such as Dragon Ball and Fist of the North Star, and sexy (towards today's standards) Japanese animes such as Sailor Moon on the TV of China. They were all uncensored and available to audiences of all ages. Of course, there was no "Twin Peaks" because I think the government really really really does not like Agent Cooper's political views. But, you get the point. There was once upon a time no censorship even in China. That was the beautiful golden age of the 1990s when I grew up. Unfortunately, many of our younger players may never experienced such an era of freedom that rarely appeared in the history of this nation. But, such an era was there. So, I intended to carry on the freedom I embraced in my childhood to this game so that maybe there is a chance that people can know games, animes, TV shows, and the culture they carry were different back then.

In that era, Blood is Red and Bones were White.

We are human. Our blood is red, our bones are white, and we die if we are killed. Yet, what do some modern censored games tell people? You can find in some countries, blood is censored to green or black. If you play League of Legends and pick Valdmir, you do not get a vampire, you get an oil baron. You can also find in some countries, white bones are also subject to be censored. Now imagine the Lich King in World of Warcraft has his head entirely concealed in a big box and his skeleton minions do the same. Funny, right? Unfortunately, it's not so funny to players who live in those countries. One more, you can also find people do not die if they are killed in some games. They somehow start to wave their hands to surrender or kneel on the floor allowing your bullets to shoot right through them in Counter-Strike. If you don't know any of those, then congratulations, you are lucky enough to live in a country where you can fully enjoy your games, a privilege that about 20% of the population on earth does not have.
I don't know when such censorships start. I don't know who would do such inhumane things.
But, I want you to remember that Blood is Red and Bones were White in a new procedurally generated quest added this week even one day "they" come to censor it and take away such memory from you.



In that era, girls could show their beautiful bodies as they liked and wore whatever clothes they wanted.
When did even Mortal Kombat stop having sexy girls?
When did all female characters start to look ugly in games?
When did companies like Sweet Baby Inc. appear in this industry?
Those so-called "awakens" and so-called political correctness are just another form of censorship to me. They shall have no place and will not exist in my world. Sure, we have diversity and towards a level of freedom that many do not have. Yet, our difference is, that I let you, players make your own decisions instead of forcing those decisions upon you. You can certainly play heroes or heroines. But,
If you want to burn down the entire city, killing everyone, you can do that. If you want to make love with girls, you can do that, we even have animations. If you want to just let the world burn when you play some mini-games, you can do that, we have plenty, including a built-in HealthStone skeuomorph. If you want to try out all those different character appearances, customizing your gender, changing them whenever you want, go ahead. That's the diversity I am talking about.
So, as we just finished the story of the Dark Elf King last week. Someone proposed to have a beautiful dark elf girl in our game. I think that's a great idea. After all, we are going to eventually have all 4 knights of the Dark Elf King return to this game. Here we are:



Judging by her hair color, you may already figure out which one she is.
She looks darker and more elf than his king because of some backstory reasons.
Most importantly, she does not hide her beautiful and formidable body. After all, why wear armor if you do not plan to get hit? And who says a spellcaster cannot have an athletic body? Just like the element she represents, she may look slender and fragile from afar, but she may also be the strongest among the four. We will have more information about her when her story comes. But, for now, you can already use her appearance for your main character or any customized teammates.

But, what about the other side of the coin?
After all, you are playing a secret organization agent. It's a grand masquerade that many organizations like yours want to hide the supernatural world from ordinary people. There may be no worse censorship than that.

A new faith tenet you can unlock if you ask a certain Illuminati doctor in the Queensmouth airport about the masks or ask Kalina about the veil. Maybe, once you have the power and knowledge, you may not want to share with others. Maybe, you finally learned it's too dangerous to have others know the unspeakable horror behind the truth, you want to "protect" them. (However, in real life, I have no idea how censoring and slut-shaming adult content even for adult-only games can help protect anything other than sinking the birth rate of a nation even further. It's not like you are fighting Slaanesh in Warhammer 40k or something like that.)
Anyway, you do not need to be someone who breaks the wall. You can also choose the path to reinforce it. Maybe that way is most beneficial to you as you already have the power, why have more competitors? So, you need tools to manipulate the public.
You now have it:


In Liu, you can now find a newspaper named "The Universal Times." It's a media with quite low moral standards. As long as you pay them enough money, they can post everything you want in the newspaper to change the view of the majority of people who live in their blessed ignorance like sheep.
You can improve your reputation. You can decrease the public's supernatural awareness. Or, for some reasons that only you may know, to increase the public's supernatural awareness. It's another tool at your disposal that allows you one step closer to a puppetmaster.

Of course, you are not alone in this game of social re-engineering. Remember that one-eyed officer in Liu's Public Security Bureau? He now receives constant reports regarding anything supernatural on his desk. The good news is, that you may also sneak into his office and take a look.

Oh, well, most of the data is still redacted. At least, you can now know the value of the local public's
supernatural awareness.

That's for this week. You can have your own choice to pick your side in this war to either break the wall or reinforce it. But, remember the history, once upon a time there was no censorship, then "they" came. In the name of protection, they made blood green and black, they covered bones with boxes and clothes in the name of your protection.

100 years ago, there were no video games, yet the World War 1 and the World War 2 still broke out.
100 years later, there are so many beautiful things in the world other than video games, yet Putin still started a war on Feb. 24th, 2022 and Hamas terrorists still went on to murder and rape on Oct.7th, 2023. Does anyone's censorship on anything stop that from happening?

Once upon a time, there was no censorship.
Will that time come again?
I don't know. But, this game comes from that golden era and it is still alive.

Things are rapidly moving forward with patches 0.85 through 0.9 all in one (cause the former primarily had full-version improvements)! Watch out for an exciting announcement soon! :)

Patch notes (v0.9)
  • (Full version) Added challenge runs (unique pre-defined gameplay variants). For example, start with only a few shots but gain 1 shot per kill; or tons of huge explosions that insta-kill enemies but lots of extra enemies; or extra shots but sometimes they go backwards. :D
  • (Full version) New item Black Hole: Pulls the closest enemy towards you when you fall into a hole. This brings the total to 111 items!
  • Changed Demolisher to work on the first X obstacles you touch (X being the number of Demolisher items you have) and not just during the first turn to give you more freedom to use the item in a planful way.
  • Changed Double Shot to trigger every other turn instead of only on the first turn since with the recent rework into a mini ball item it has lower immediate potential.
  • (Full version) Made it possible to switch between unlocks in run-end screen when multiple items were unlocked in a run.
  • Added tooltip to difficulty settings that shows all active difficulty effects.
  • Prevented direct repetitions in item re-rolls from occuring.
  • Excluded a few initially not very useful items from the random starting items pool for difficulty 15 and above.
  • Added a few new sound effects.
  • Added a few new icons and item graphics.
  • Updated Unity engine to the latest LTS version. Primarily to ensure long-term compatibility, maintainability and (potentially) portability. You shouldn’t notice any difference except for maybe some performance improvements here or there.
  • Optimized in-game lighting and added a third light quality setting.
  • A bunch of general performance improvements and code cleanup.
  • Several wording adjustments (shoutout to axerity).
  • Countless smaller fixes and tweaks.

Gladiator Guild Manager - Entertainment Forge

In the newest update v0.942, After Battle Stats and Enemy Team Items features are available by default. We thank you for all the feedback that made this feature possible. We’ve been told, and we agree, that this feature adds additional depth to the game as it allows us to really see what is happening in even the most hectic fights, allowing us to further plan and optimize gladiator teams. To understand which units are the highest damage dealers, to compare them with different items, compare and find the best results. To see which units are doing the most tanking, healing, and to determine how much importance each gladiator has in the team.

Now, After Battle Stats is localized in all languages and finalized for everybody to use.

Additionally, we have made it so that enemy teams carry items in championships (and Tournament Mode). Only a few of the enemy gladiators will have items, making considering them and planning how to deal with them an additional challenge. Balancing has been adjusted accordingly so that the difficulty remains the same. If an enemy team has items, their levels will be lower by the exact amount of power that the items give them, making them equally powerful as before. The only difference now is that it might be worth paying attention to gladiators with items and perhaps eliminating them first if they present a serious danger.




What is Next?
We are already knee-deep in changing the Quirk System and redesigning the Unit Info Panel look. We talked about it in detail in the previous announcement that you can find here.


I'll briefly describe the idea behind it here. We noticed that in our game, quirks are way more important than just some side random stats. And that there was a lot of frustration with finding gladiators with quirks we’d like in the shop. So we decided to give them the deserved attention.

We are working on systems that will let you learn new quirks as gladiators are leveling up and even upgrade them, allowing further customization of characters as well as nice additional progression. In the gladiator shop, you’ll still be able to find units with good quirks and buy them, but you’ll also be able to find units that have empty quirk slots on which you can spend mana crystals and teach new quirks. They will be separated into 4 tiers based on how powerful they are. And each tier will unlock after 6 levels, providing a steady progression of your gladiators with meaningful choices during the whole game.


We’ll also be adding a set of new quirks to expand possibilities. Some of the new quirks will be more specialized than current ones. For example, there will be several quirks that are only for gladiators with shields, or only for gladiators with projectile attacks.

I will write down the quirks that we are considering making, so you guys can tell us what you think about them. And if you have some ideas for new quirks, we’d love to hear them.

New Quirk (Trait) Ideas:

There are many new quirks that will affect gladiator abilities. As we’d have 4 tiers of quirks, each unlocked after 6 levels (Level 1 (tier 1), level 6 (tier 2), level 12 (tier 3), level 18 (tier 4). So we decided to put all ability affecting quirks in tier 2. Then players could choose only one ability altering quirk for each unit, keeping other quirks important as well.

Skill Quirks (Tier 2 only)
Shield Block Defense Traits
1. Healing Shieldbearer - 5% of the damage blocked heals allies within an area of 2.5 around this gladiator (Cooldown: 3 seconds).
2. Emberheart - Blocking a melee attack releases a heat blaze, damaging enemies within a 2.5 area around this gladiator for 5% of the blocked damage (Cooldown: 3 seconds).
3. Repulsor Spirit - Blocking a melee attack releases a force in an area of 3 around this gladiator, pushing enemies away and knocking them down for 0.5 seconds (cooldown: 15 seconds).
4. Defiant Retaliator - Blocking a melee attack knocks the attacking enemy down for 2 seconds (cooldown: 8 seconds).
5. Reflexive - Blocking a projectile reflects it back towards a random enemy with 50% of its damage (cooldown: 7 seconds).

Dodge Defense Traits
1. Agile Vitality - Dodging an attack restores 5% health and 10% stamina.
2. Agile Empowerment - Dodging an attack increases the main stat by 50% for the next 3 seconds.

General Tank Traits
1. Foul Mouth - Taunts enemies within a 3.5 area around this gladiator every 12 seconds.
2. Chillheart - Once this gladiator is hit by a melee attack, the enemy will be frozen, preventing them from moving for 3 seconds.

Projectile Traits
1. Dual Focus - Each time the gladiator fires a projectile, they fire an additional projectile at a random enemy with 20% of the original projectile's damage.
2. Piercing Resolve - If a projectile kills an enemy, it will continue flying with the remaining damage points instead of being destroyed.

Offensive Traits
1. Wound Specialist - Damaging an enemy causes them to bleed, inflicting [additionalStat_1] damage per this gladiator's level indefinitely. (20% effectiveness for AoE abilities).
2. Toxic Personality - Damaging an enemy poisons them, causing a loss of [additionalStat_1] stamina per this gladiator's level for 5 seconds. (20% effectiveness for AoE abilities).
3. Wildheart - The first time the gladiator attacks, the damage is increased by 150% (40% effectiveness for AoE abilities).
4. Critically Lucky - Each time the gladiator deals damage, there is a 20% chance to deal double the amount of damage (40% effectiveness for AoE abilities).
5. Knockout Artist - Each time the gladiator deals damage, there is a 10% chance to knock down the enemy.

Support
1. Lifeforce Alchemist - Healing friendly units also restores 20% of the healed amount as stamina.
2. Vigor Alchemist - Restoring stamina to a friendly unit also heals the unit for 30% of the restored stamina.
3. Cleansing Alchemist - Casting a healing or stamina restoration spell on a friendly unit also removes one negative buff from them.

Summoner Traits
1. Ascending Summoner - Each time this gladiator summons a unit, they gain a 10% increase in their main stat, (Max 40%)
2. Regenerative Summoner - Each time this gladiator summons a unit, they restore 20% of their own health.
3. Vigor Summoner - Each time this gladiator summons a unit, they restore 30% of their own stamina.
4. Lifebind Summoner - Each time this gladiator summons a unit, they lose 20% of their max health, but the summoned unit is 35% higher level.
5. Arcane Archer - Each time this gladiator summons a unit, they fire a projectile at a random enemy, dealing damage equal to 200% of this gladiator's main stat.

Universal Quirks
1. Mighty Beastmaster - Gains a 10% main stat bonus for each friendly beast in the team 1 second after the battle starts (Max 80%).
2. Resilient Beastmaster - Increases max health by 5% for each friendly beast on the team 1 second after the battle starts (max 40%).
3. Mighty Awakening - The gladiator starts the battle stunned for the first 4 seconds but gains a 50% main stat increase and a 20% increase in max health.

Weather
1. Raincaller Martyr - The gladiator changes the weather to Rain 1 second after the battle starts, then dies.
2. Windbringer Martyr - The gladiator changes the weather to Heavy Wind 1 second after the battle starts, then dies.
3. Mistweaver Martyr - The gladiator changes the weather to Crimson Mist 1 second after the battle starts, then dies.

We're still thinking about those 3 quirks. The idea is to add them to tier 4, which can only be learned at level 18. So, only if you have a team that leans towards one of the main stats (Strength, Agility, or Intelligence) and also has some quirks that give bonuses for one of the three main weathers. Then picking up one of the Martyr quirks and sacrificing one of the gladiators for each fight would work and give your team a huge boost. It could be somewhat OP, but the team would need to be very specific to take advantage of it, so it might be an interesting option to have. Otherwise, losing a gladiator to change weather is usually not a good idea.

General Quirks
1. Beast - The gladiator regenerates health and stamina 10% faster.
2. Colossal - Max health increases by 30%, but movement speed decreases by 70%.
3. Mobile Marksman - Gladiator is able to move at 30% of the speed while shooting.
4. Adaptive Marksman - Able to shoot arrows even when the enemy is next to this unit.
5. Long Arms - Increases ability range by 1.

Conclusion About Quirks
We are still working on the new Quirk system and haven’t started implementing new quirks yet. So they might change as we see what works or doesn’t. And some of them we might not be able to make due to technical limitations of our existing code. But those are the ideas we’re striving towards.

Just a small update to introduce a new feature requested by the Community, a game play improvement and fixes for some minor issues that we have uncovered while developing The Dark Tower.

  • New Advanced Rule: Experience Balance. Only applies if 'AI Hit Point Bonus' is not zero. Adjusts the experience received from melee and ranged attacks so that characters receive the same XPs as when there is no adjustment to the AI unit's hit points.



    This means that your units will level up at roughly the same speed regardless of the AI Hit Point Bonus.

  • Change: If a unit resists a spell due to its Magic Resistance attribute, the text "Magic Resistance" will float above the unit.

Due to changes in Steam's platform support, we have upgraded The Curse to run as a 64-bit executable only.
