Mole Maiden - Tastie
Welcome back to another development update on Mole Maiden! This month, I've made significant progress, which I'm eager to share with you. So, without further ado, let's dive into the updates.


Set Dressing:

Following my roadmap outlined in January, the first quarter of this year is all about crafting and decorating the remaining areas of the game. This month, I focused on two particularly intriguing spaces: Okimagma and HIVE HQ.

Okimagma marks the game's final frontier. A treacherous descent just beneath the earth's crust, it's a land of scorching heat, dominated by molten rock and bubbling magma. Despite its dangers, Okimagma promises an unforgettable adventure, assuming you can handle the journey.


HIVE HQ stands in stark contrast as the nerve center of our antagonists, the HIVE. This technologically advanced institution serves as a formidable challenge. Your mission to infiltrate it turns into an intense enemy gauntlet, simplifying the design process but ensuring an adrenaline-pumping experience.


Collaboration Updates:

Last month, I kicked off an exciting collaboration with TNH Nebula to enrich Mole Maiden's OST. While I won't unveil a new track today, I'm thrilled to report we've created another absolute banger! Stay tuned for more updates.


Adjusted Scope:

In line with the development timeline, I've made strategic cuts to the game's scope, particularly around planned boss battles. This decision aligns with my adherence to Fumito Ueda's philosophy of design by subtraction. It's crucial, especially at this stage, to focus on refining the game into a cohesive experience. Ideas that haven't materialized by now were likely too ambitious or not fully baked from the start.

From now on, I also plan on making sure to create full-scale builds and play through the entire game from start to finish once a month to allow me time to see how the game plays as an entire package.


What’s Next:

Looking ahead, March promises to be an exciting month. The map's completion will mark the end of alpha phase 3, a significant milestone in our journey. Moreover, I'm thrilled to be attending GDC, where I'll connect with fellow developers and share insights from Mole Maiden's development.

We aren't limiting the competition to a specific number of maps to be incorporated into the main game. Rest assured, if your map is of high caliber, it won't be disregarded.

Our aim with this competition is to embrace the talent and creativity in the community and make it part of our game development process. ❤️

Tank Survivor - ICannotBeYourKing


The group of survivors has grown, this time with a tank and an entire camp behind it! Including the heavily armed (AI) soldiers in the camp, you are not fighting alone, we are all survivors tonight!

The core of the game is endless defense, trying to survive as many waves of attacks as possible, protecting the walls of the camp from being broken down, and your tanks from being overwhelmed!

There are many ways to defend. You can:

  • Recruit AI soldiers: let them hide behind your steel butt and do their best!
  • Reinforced tank: 37mm water pipe is too small! Get a thicker one!
  • Upgrade the camp: let soldiers get stronger logistics! Combat power doubled!
  • Choose strategy and specialization: Let’s be honest, this is the card drawing system of Auto Chess! 6 major arms X 6 major specialties, used to strengthen your soldiers! There are also 3 types of equipment cards on the way to strengthen tank main guns, machine guns, and defense towers!

What should I do if got heavenly hand cards and felt that I am too strong?

A special introduction to the level-skipping system! You can decide to skip up to 10 waves of attacks at one time based on your luck, and you can choose to skip levels after each wave of attacks, whatever you want!

What are the rewards? This may be hard to say. Anyway, a large amount of gold will be given to you at once to make you enjoy card drawing, but there will be no additional material rewards. After all, the skipped levels will also avoid the loss of soldiers... As the saying goes, if you don't lose, you make a profit!

The economic system is also worth mentioning. We have two currencies: gold and materials. Golds are needed to do everything. Materials are used to upgrade buildings and recruit powerful soldiers. In addition, the monetary rewards for killing soldiers and killing tanks are different...It’s worth thinking carefully about when to last hit.

Of course, the above are only the gameplays that have been implemented or mostly implemented so far. Some new features are being worked on, and more cards are also planned! Meet the Merkava Mk.3 Raam Segol


The Merkava Mk.3 Raam Segol is an experimental version of the Israeli Army’s Merkava Mk.3 main battle tank, featuring the Raam Segol. In real life, this system automatically turns the tank’s turret in the direction of the laser and releases smoke grenades automatically. However in game, we’ll not be implementing this functionality as in many instances, it would interfere with the player’s control mid-combat. In-game, the Raam Segol will warn about the direction from where a laser is and the player will be able to launch smoke grenades or maneuver away as normal. In addition, this tank features thermal imaging, an effective APFSDS shell and a HE-TF shell.

The Merkava Mk.3 Raam Segol is a premium and is available for pre-order, giving you the unique “Purple Thunder” title, which is the translated name of Raam Segol, and a decal!

Changes

  • Tutorial Rework
    Dev notes: Changes have been made to improve the new player experience. The tutorial functions the same except the pacing of the first mission is much faster. We felt it dragged a little too much, especially during the first few waves. We hope new and returning players enjoy the rework.
  • Early game balancing / Pacing improvements
    Dev notes: Additionally we have made further improvements to the pacing and balancing of the earlier game. Waves, especially earlier ones will progress quicker and we have boosted the starting credits during some deployments to provide more flexibility and room for experimentation during the first few waves. We hope new and returning players enjoy the rework.
  • UI Improvements (Better feedback and responsiveness in some situations)
  • Artillery turret no longer has to reload when first built. It will fire immediately after construction
  • Airstrike base damage slightly increased across all damage types
  • Machine gun turret range increased slightly (all levels)
Fixes
  1. Players could not build anything if the camera is adjusted during the initial tutorial

March begins with another update that focuses on visual improvements, but also includes:


  • Improved display of tooltips on units in battle.
  • Improved the operation of reward stores (tavern / stable)
  • Improved deselecting of treasures after collecting them
  • Improved loading of structures on the map
  • Reduced unnecessary refreshing of models of some structures (including mills, shrines, peasant huts, etc.)
  • Changes have been made to the balance of the 6 mission of Purians Campaign - the farm gives one peasant instead of two
  • Minor improvements have been made to the quest in the 6 mission of Heathens Campaign
  • Changed the way to enter the castle scene
  • Added a cursor for entering the castle scene (magnifying glass cursor)
  • Added effect of gentle camera movement in the castle
