This update introduces a feature that I'm really not sure I'll keep, but I thought it was worth testing:
after one of your characters is incapacitated, you have the option to replan the rest of the mission (you won't save your character though).

Your feedback is more important than ever because it will determine whether or not it will be included in the release.
So make sure to join the discord and tell me what you think!

Reminder: switching to the test branch

In the Steam client, right-click on the game from your library and select "Properties".
Select the "BETAS" tab.
Select the "test" branch listed in the dropdown menu under "Select the beta you would like to opt into".



The game then should automatically update to the test version.

To switch back to the public branch, just select "None" in the betas dropdown.
Word Attack - bsagames
Wordsearch - New "Overlay words" option
  • With this option selected the game plays as before. When placing words to find, they could be placed over one another, e.g. if it were placing the words ONE and TWO, the same "O" could be used for each words placement. You could also use the same letters to find different words, e.g. if you wanted to find ONE and SOMEONE you could find SOMEONE, then use the ONE from that word to find ONE.
  • With this option unselected, two things happen. Firstly words are placed apart from one another. When placing words all the letters are added as their own unique cell/tile. Secondly, when selecting where words are, if you select a letter that has been used to find another word then that word will be removed from your list of found words and you will need to find it again elsewhere (or in the same place in which case the same thing will happen to the word you just found). As the game progresses you can see less areas where you haven't found words, and therefore less space where you need to look for words. Unless you go wrong and use a word like ONE from a word like SOMEONE, this makes the board easier to complete.

Other changes
  • Added "Extra saves" option to the setup screen. Previously this was a hidden option that could be added to the setup file manually and related to the wordsearch game. When enabled, every time you find a word the save/continue file is updated, therefore saving you from (most) power losses and other types of crashes. When not enabled the save is only done when you select to exit the board you are playing on.
  • Word Hunt game changed so that "Extra saves" has a similar effect to that in Wordsearch game. However saving will occur more often, i.e. after each cell is revealed, so theoretically it will have a more noticeable impact on performance.
(Under normal circumstances there is no need to enable "Extra saves".)

You may have to change the game settings to the environment that works for your PC specifications when playing the game.

Q: Can I play with Steam Deck?

A: The pre-alpha test cannot be played on Steam Deck.

Q: Is the pre-alpha released globally?
A: The pre-alpha test will be serviced globally, there may be some limited regions in the official launch.

A: The pre-alpha test version does not include the game narrative.
The dev team is currently working on the details of the main storyline. So, you could find some cutscenes you see during the pre-alpha test a little out of context.

A: <Vindictus: Defying Fate> pre-alpha test includes content for test purposes.

A: You can experience some outfits available in the pre-alpha test.

A: Two playable characters - Lann and Fiona – are available in the pre-alpha test. The exact total number of playable characters for the launch version is yet to be decided.
The dev team is striving to include wide options of unique characters as providing various action combat experiences through different types of characters is part of the core gameplay of <Vindictus: Defying Fate>.

Q. Is it a single-player game?
A: Only single-player mode is available in the pre-alpha test.
The dev team is planning to add multi-player mode in addition to the single-player mode which will be the main play mode in the launch version.

Q. Will <Vindictus: Defying Fate> be released on consoles?
A: We are planning for release on consoles. However, the details on the console platform are to be decided.

Q: Are the playable characters going to be in a realistic art style?
A: The playable characters in the pre-alpha test are depicted a little more in a realistic art style than intended.
The dev team is planning to stylize the playable characters overall in future builds with additional options of playable characters added.

Q: I'd like to know about the future test plans.
A: Future test plans for <Vindictus: Defying Fate> is to be decided.

Q: Is <Vindictus: Defying Fate> an open-world game?
A: Currently, the game is not being developed as an open-world game.
However, we are making sizable fields each with unique concept, filled with various exciting factors of their own.

Q: Is <Vindictus: Defying Fate> a “Soulslike” game?
A: <Vindictus: Defying Fate>s an action RPG game with various unique characters and an exciting, fast-paced combat style that differs from games categorized in “Soulslike” genre.
Some similarities can be found in the game system since it is inspired by the original title Vindictus as well as other great video games and media content. The dev team is striving to provide a unique action combat experience through various key elements in the game such as various distinctive playable characters, combat tempo and skills.

Q: Is the game going to be F2P or B2P? Is it going to include P2W elements or Premium elements?
A: The details of the business model are to be decided.

Q: Do you have plans to add PVP content in future builds?
A: Plans about adding PVP content in future builds are to be decided.

Q: Does the pre-alpha include character customization options?

A: 4 Active Skills per playable character are available for the pre-alpha test and future builds can include more.
The launch build is expected to include less Active Skills in the beginning and the players can unlock/obtain new skills through gameplay and character level-up.

Q: What are the minimum/recommended PC specifications to play the game?
A: The recommended specifications are as below:

  • OS Version: Window 10 22h
  • Graphics: Geforce GTX 2060 VRAM 8GB / Radeon RX 5700 XT
  • RAM: 16 GB

Q. Can I play the game on OS versions other than Windows 10(64bit)?
A: The pre-alpha can be played on Windows 11 and some Windows 10 versions.
Windows 10 must be updated versions of 22h2 or higher.
The game does not run on MAC/Linux.

Q. Can I play the game on consoles?
A: The pre-alpha cannot be played on console platforms.
We are planning for the launch version to be available on console platforms.

Q. I have a connection issue with the controller.
A: The pre-alpha only supports Xbox controller.
More controllers will be supported for future builds.

Q. What are some ways to solve commonly occurring issues?

A: Please submit a ticket via our Discord's #feedback-reports channel, including your Steam ID and a screenshot of it.
  • How to see your steam ID
    - Click on "Account Details" in the top right corner of the Steam launcher.
    - You'll find '(NAME_OF_USER)'s Account,' and 'Steam ID: (USER_ID_NUMBER)' information on the top of the page.

▶ Inquiries related to <Vindictus>

Q. How is <Vindictus: Defying Fate> different from the original <Vindictus>?
A: <Vindictus: Defying Fate> aims for a somewhat heavier and restrained battle system. For example, unlike <Vindictus>, you cannot fight enemies as being attacked by them. Moreover, attack speed is not one of the stat systems, but is decided by the playable character’s unique combat style.

In terms of outfits, the highest priority is on creating a variety of costume concepts that effectively express physical effects such as capes, outerwear, dresses, accessories, etc., by overcoming physical systems and technology challenges. There will be less outfits with too much exposure or somewhat revealing designs.

We are developing a new action RPG that shares the IP with <Vindictus>, but differs in core gameplay mechanics, as well as being built on a different engine and services on a new platform.

<Vindictus: Defying Fate> will continue to differentiate itself from <Vindictus> with its own unique strengths and gameplay mechanics, providing distinct entertainment to the players.

Q. Is <Vindictus: Defying Fate>Vindictus 2?
A: Since it’s based on <Vindictus> IP, various elements such as characters, locations, monsters, etc. can be from the original title.
However, it will not be an upgraded or improved version of the original title <Vindictus>.
Instead, we are developing it as a completely new game by incorporating a different story, characters, contents, costumes, etc., that will be original factors of <Vindictus: Defying Fate>.

Q. Will the lore, characters, monsters, etc. From the original title be found in <Vindictus: Defying Fate>?
A: The lore, characters, monsters, costumes, etc. from <Vindictus> will not all be found in <Vindictus: Defying Fate> and the dev team is currently considering various directions for the new title.
Some characters may have altered appearance or different elements, while others may be removed from the new title.
Additionally, original elements of <Vindictus: Defying Fate> will be updated.
Particularly, core game systems such as growth systems and content are being developed in completely new directions.

Q. Will <Vindictus> end its service with the launching of <Vindictus: Defying Fate>?
A: Not at all.
As mentioned throughout the FAQ, <Vindictus: Dying Fate> is a completely new game that only shares the same IP with the original title, and it is separate from the service direction of <Vindictus>.
We have no plans to make any changes to or terminate the live service of <Vindictus> because of <Vindictus: Defying Fate> launch.

Q. Will there be a cross-promotion/event between <Vindictus> and <Vindictus: Defying Fate>?
A: No, there are no plans for Cross promotions nor the event with the original title <Vindictus>.

▶ About <Vindictus: Defying Fate>
<Vindictus: Defying Fate>is an action RPG taking place in the same realm of 2010 MMORPG Vindictus, but completely developed into a new game with the Unreal Engine.

It tells the stories of various characters progressing towards the truth of the world's fate within a fantasy universe based on Celtic mythology.

While the story is not revealed during this pre-alpha test, we plan to present a new interpretation of the original story in the launch version, taking it in a different direction.

▶ Our Development Story
Original <Vindictus>, serviced from 2010, was acclaimed for its great action from the initial launch with many unique characters with amazing narrative.

Our team decided to focus more on substantial action-oriented experience and creating a game structure that allows deeper immersion in the narrative.
So, after three months of prototyping in early 2023, we commenced the development from April with this goal in mind.

In the future, we plan to support not only PC (Steam) but also console platforms, allowing even more players to enjoy the game.

▶ Key Feature of the Game
Our gameplay is based on single-player mode.
Based on single-player gameplay, we aimed to create unique action styles and exciting combat.

Each character has unique abilities and combos with different aspects of attack & guard, allowing players to choose actions that suit their style.
This provides a fresh experience of battle against the same monsters.
By utilizing each character's weapons, skills, and combat skills, players can continuously challenge fearsome monsters with unique patterns, exploiting weaknesses to defeat them.

Another aspect of enjoyment in the game is the variety of character outfits.
We will provide sample outfits for the pre-alpha test, but plan to offer even more outfit designs that meet the expectations of players upon official game launch.

As this is an early-stage test, you may encounter optimization issues such as lag.

As it's the early stage of the game, please note that the story system is not implemented yet, so we may not fully showcase the specific universe of Celtic mythology.

For the pre-alpha test, please understand the main focus is on the combat system.
The storyline, growth system, character stats, exploration, items, and strong attacks on the boss enemies in 'groggy state' have not been implemented yet but will be updated upon the official launch.

The Sinking City - foxywitchery
Today we're saying goodbye to the old version of The Sinking City, it has been removed from Steam.

The new version is available to play. It includes the bug fixes and optimizations previously released for the game on other platforms.

Swordai Playtest - castavernas
This patch has some focuses on tweaks to the new player experience and changes to the controls.

  • Gave click-drag mode a more clear indicator that is designed to help new players adapt to the mouse controls more easily. When you click and hold a direction selection display appears and you can see your current drag direction as an arrow that grows as you continue to drag. A direction is selected only when the arrow reaches a certain size that is determined by your click-drag sensitivity. This gives you the ability to observe and correct your direction input at the cost of being a bit slower. Playing with sensitivity 1 is exactly as it was before, while playing with a low sensitivity means that you can very easily verify that your drag is in the direction you intended prior to executing your block/attack. The goal of the system is that the game will be less frustrating due to input errors when you are new while also giving more clear visual feedback on your mouse movements. As players improve I imagine they will increase the sensitivity towards 1. I can fight almost as well as normal at 0.5 sensitivity and as well as normal at 0.8
  • You can no longer combo off of your opponents block. The time after which you can't act is very short so that you can react to an immediate riposte and is ping normalized. Because of this you can still attack again quite quickly, but you don't get the combo bonus for doing so and the lockout is still enough to slow you down a good bit so if you try and immediately attack again its harder to combo block off it and if you fail to do so and trade into a riposte you are likely taking ~10x the damage you deal (full charge attack vs light attack + riposte damage reduction).
  • *The buffering system changed so that your direction input is captured at the time that you try to buffer the action rather than as soon as you are able to block or attack. Buffering a second action overwrites the buffer. Your buffered action immediately executes as soon as it can. So for example you swing and miss, and while recovering try and attack up and then change your mind and block upleft and then turn your head to look right, all before the swing recovery ends. At the instant it ends if you are still holding RMB down you will be blocking upLeft.
  • A myriad of very minor tweaks and changes to some of the single player content, I still have another round of polish to do on some of that.
  • Added an attack trainer to home so that you can practice kicking / feinting / comboing against a blocking opponent of varying difficulties. Be sure to hold TAB to see his information panel as he has some good tips.
  • Reordered the challenge of initiation and memories
  • Changed the drag click smoothing function, I think it should feel a bit more precise
