Before we get to the dev diary, we wanted to thank each and everyone of the many, many thousands of testers who took part in the closed beta.

It was a terrific experience for us and seeing so many people enjoy multiplayer games while sharing their opinions on the game in the private beta channels only reinforced us with the conviction that Broken Arrow is going to be a great game.

The closed beta ends today: as mentioned before, we’ll be back in January with the intention of opening a public demo. We’ll reveal the actual date in early January.

Dev Diary #7 - A sense of detail

Today’s dev diary will be focussing on the development team’s attention to details: the game is overflowing with nice visual details at every level and it is our intention to showcase that.

Textures and models
The first thing you notice when arriving in the hangar which serves as background for the main menu is how detailed the vehicles look.
Each vehicle from the good old classics to the most unknown prototypes or the newest machines barely in service have received the same attention. Blueprints and in-depth photographic research are used to be as close to reality as possible.

Customizable elements also received a lot of attention to make sure they are perfectly compatible with the rest of the vehicle.
If you move the camera around and zoom a bit more you will notice even more details like the cockpits of the planes, the weapons they carry and the pylons holding them.
Helicopters are not to be outdone, with a level of customization equivalent to the planes.
Here is a MH-60M IDAP of the special forces equipped with laser guided rockets DAGR and stinger anti-air missiles.
When switching to the infantry tab you will notice that soldiers’ equipment vary from one squad to another to show their role, and each soldier is slightly different from the next with different body sizes and variations in their equipment.

The weapons carried by infantry and mounted on vehicles also received particular attention.



Animations
Time to launch a battle where all these units will come to life.
Here are just a few of the little things you can notice when you zoom in on the battlefield.

The 2K22 Tunguska is a short range anti aircraft vehicle equipped with guns and missiles. As in reality they can move independently. The unit is also equipped with a radar that can be deployed to increase the detection and firing ranges, it also allows it to intercept cruise missiles.


The 2S1 Tulpan is a heavy 240mm mortar. The shells are so heavy that it’s impossible to load them from the muzzle like other mortars, so instead the tube is lowered and the shells are loaded from the breach by a crane after each shot.


ATGM stands for Anti-Tank Guided Missiles. They are generally stored in tubes that also contain the cable used to guide them. Once the missile has reached its target the tube must be replaced.

A Bradley carries 2 ready to launch ATGMs on the side of the turret. Once both missiles are fired they must be replaced using the rear hatch.


In some tanks, empty shell casings are simply dropped at the bottom of the compartment and discarded later. But vehicles with autoloaders generally include an ejection mechanism.
In the game you will see the casing being ejected by the autoloader just like in reality. Autoloaded tank guns are generally slower to reload than their manually loaded counterparts but have the advantage to maintain a steady rate of fire even when the crew is shocked.


The Derivatsiya is a BMP-3 chassis equipped with modern sensors and a 57mm gun shooting airburst rounds very deadly against slow flying aircrafts. It also provides efficient fire support against infantry.
The recoil of the gun is animated, the ejection hatch opens after each shot as a shell casing is ejected and bounces on the ground.


Speaking of recoil, the movement induced by each shot has an effect on the suspension of the unit dynamically depending on the power of the gun and the orientation of the turret. Vehicles in water also swing dynamically with the waves and the recoil of their weapons.



You have the possibility to activate the afterburner on planes that can do it in reality. When you do, flames spout from the engine, a thick smoke forms behind the plane and when the sound barrier is reached you can see and hear the sonic boom effect. In addition, on planes with variable-sweep wings this is accompanied by the animation of the wings switching to supersonic mode.


Some units like the S-300V need to be deployed before becoming operational. This cooldown is accompanied by the animation of the deployment.

Finally the internal parts of the vehicles are modeled and their doors are animated. You can see the infantry filling the compartment when entering in a vehicle or helicopter.


Maps
Broken Arrow's maps feature dense, detailed urban areas that rival city-building games.




But suddenly the battle rages on and the enemy leaves you no respite. Bombs fall from the sky and hit a high riser which collapses from the impact.

Hello, everyone. The newest patch (0.16.10) is now live on all platforms. Please save your progress and restart your game client to update. You should be able to load normally and continue playing. If you have any problems, please let us know.

Bugs and Fixes
  • Fixed several crash occurrences.
  • Fixed some lag/fps drop issues.
  • Fixed weird water behavior issues on maps where rivers would enter and exit the map in segments, over a period of time.
  • Fixed the issue where certain rivers would lack water in some areas once the map is created (e.g. Map seed: 1888939944, Mountain, Large).
  • Fixed the issue where a map would experience flood after some time, even when the player did nothing to alter the river’s course.
  • Fixed the issue where if the process of relocating production/furniture structures is interrupted, it would result in two structure piles and one of those would be unusable.
  • Fixed the issue where the swimming animation wouldn’t trigger for humans and animals in some scenarios.
  • Fixed the issue where animals and humans would be able to swim up the waterfalls and thus appear stuck in unreachable locations. Swimming up the waterfalls might still happen, so be sure to F10 if you encounter it.
  • Fixed the issue where settlers wouldn’t wake up if the rain fell on them or if the temperature turned super low while they were sleeping.
  • Fixed the issue where settlers would go through trees when walking on shallow water.
  • Fixed the issue where the room wouldn’t be detected as “Great Hall”, despite having all the necessary elements.
  • Fixed the issue where pens wouldn’t be detectable in certain scenarios.
  • Some audio fixes.
Quality of life improvements
  • Fishing reel has been removed from fishing rod to maintain historical accuracy.
  • Bolts and food pouch are no more overlapping if the settler carries both at the same time.
  • Plants and trees will not have a shake effect if damaged by water, sunlight or temperature.
  • Settlers should be properly aligned with the chairs/stools they are sitting on.
Known issues:
  • Settlers will sometimes end up stuck. Try to save & load. If the issue persists, please F10 it and mention the stuck part.
  • There is still some work to be done with animal’s swimming animations.
  • Humans and animals can't drown for some reason. Yay?
  • Settlers will not choose the closest production building (if there are more of the same type), but the one that has a production set first in the global list of productions.
  • If your settlers are experiencing weird animations with some actions, be sure to turn off V-sync and cap the game's FPS in the game's options. Cap it to 60fps. If the issue persists, cap it at 30.
DISCLAIMER: The experimental and the main branch have the same version of the game. However, on the experimental branch, we decided to keep Dev version of the game, and that means that a Dev log with red text will appear from time to time. This will help us get more info from your side when crashes and bug reports occur. If you are annoyed by this, please switch to the main branch to experience the game without the red text.

We have prepared the next big content update for Revival: Recolonization. The update contains a wide array of tweaks and changes to give you the best 4x gaming experience.

New random events

We've thoroughly redesigned the in-game random event system to give you a more varied experience when playing a long game.



Previously, event choices were inconsequential, but in the latest update, each event presents a unique problem to solve. The correct choice will reward you with a buff. These can be accomplished with the help of one of your clans.

We hope that this system will encourage you to further understand the clan properties!.

New victory options

The victory system has also received a complete overhaul. To assess the reasonableness of humans, the All-Mind organizes competitions between factions with various time-limited tasks. The faction that completes the task better than the rest will receive the Sign of Rationality.



Once a faction has three Signs of Rationality, the All-Mind will recognize that faction's supremacy over the AI, unlock the interplanetary portal, and then self-destruct itself.

You can still win with military might – if any competing faction is destroyed, you will receive all of the Signs of Rationality previously earned by that faction.

Also, we've added a scientific-based way to win, allowing you to cheat the All-Mind and unlock the portal by learning a special science.

New combat units

You can now use nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers in Revival: Recolonization. Submarines allow you to strike the enemy with a nuclear missile, while aircraft carriers will launch airplanes.




They're the equivalent of airbases and missile silos. While building mobile units is restricted to your region, they offer a unique way to disrupt any coastal location on the map.

Diplomatic changes

Finally, the Military Treaty has been added to the game. If two factions have signed a military treaty, they can use each other's units during a battle against a common enemy. Units of the allied faction will appear as reinforcements before the battle begins. However, you must pay your ally with reputation points to add them to battle.

To take advantage of this feature, several conditions must be met:
  • Your faction and the ally faction must be at war with a third faction.
  • Your army and the ally's army must be on the same continent.
This feature does not work against clans and automatons; you will still have to fight them with your own forces.

Hi everyone!

Got a small update of tweaks and bug fixes for you before Christmas!

I've made some changes to how the Cop AI works. I was noticing that in the quarantine phase a lot of cops were becoming occupied on certain building layouts:



I've changed the rules of how quarantining works to help with this. There is now a maximum of 5 people blocking one side before the extras move in:



This should help them be more consistent across different building types and layouts, as well as giving the cops a small advantage when trying to contain the threat.

I also have some bug fixes:

Fixed a bug where cops that were in the police station were standing still and not moving when they were out of ammo and there were zombies in the police station.

Fixed a bug where people who were leaving buildings would keep doing that same command even after the simulation was reset, in worst cases this would cause all the cops to leave their buildings when a sim was reset.

I'm going to be taking a little break for Christmas vacation so there won't be some updates for a few weeks but after that I'll be ready to crack on with more features for the game! I hope you all have a good holiday season and I'll see you in future updates!
