With two back-to-back events, a Tall Tale release, a Season Ten preview and a Community Weekend, September was a rich feast of Sea of Thieves action and we defy anyone to say otherwise. No, put your hand down, we’ve already defied it. Now let’s round it all up, no time to waste! Commence round-uppery!
Content Update
September got things going in fine style with the return of Legends Week, offering boosted rewards and goodies to grab in a celebration of our Pirate Legends’ mad skills. Without missing a beat, sailors then segued into the second Event of the month as Wish You Were Here week posed a trove of travel-centric Challenges with more unique items to earn.
Then as we neared the end of the month, it was time for the third and final instalment of Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island! Entitled ‘The Lair of LeChuck’, this rollicking outing concluded the trilogy of Tales with an expedition to Monkey Island and a showdown with the ghost pirate Captain himself. If you’ve yet to pit yourself against his nefarious schemes, all three of these Tall Tales are playable now and will be until further notice.
Finishing off the month, we decided that the best way to mark the final weeks of Season Nine was with another Community Weekend! One of the star features this time around was Pop-Up Plunder, triggering rare treasures in-game for all crews on a server to track down before they rudely vanished again. Maps were shared on our social channels, with some dig spots more deviously disguised than others…
News and Features
Before Season Nine Community Weekend landed, we wanted to be sure all our intrepid players knew what to expect. Pop-Up Plunder was just one of the changes made since the last Community Weekend – changes that also included the shift in primary channel from Twitter to Twitch! Christina, our esteemed Head of Community and Comms, jumped in to break down the details.
Sticking with the community theme, September’s Spotlights took advantage of Legends Week to promote two pirates with historical Community Spotlights to Legendary status: IOnEI_Falcon, also known as dedicated Deckhand Amir, and Lizalaroo, a titan of community contests and crafting.
Even with the frenzy of activity in September, Talk Like a Pirate Day still got its dues with a special Pirate Emporium sale and time-limited Pretty Polly Sails – and as the Wish You Were Here Event was all about exploring the Sea of Thieves to experience all its beauty and danger, it was the perfect opportunity to reveal the Rough Guide to Sea of Thieves! If you’ve ever wondered what your favourite pirate haven might look like to a tourist, swipe this free download and feel that sense of discovery all over again.
Videos and Streams
Leading the charge for the Video team in September, the launch trailer for ‘The Lair of LeChuck’ saw out the final Tall Tale in the trilogy with suitable fanfare and a look at the last batch of themed cosmetics. But that wasn’t the only Legend of Monkey Island content laid out to tantalise fans of Guybrush and friends last month, as lashings of behind-the-scenes insights and secrets were unveiled not only in part 2 of our Deep Dive video series, but part 3 as well.
The latest Sea of Thieves News video was also out there dropping exclusives of its own, as attention started shifting to the future and what changes Season Ten may bring. To sate that curiosity and offer much more detail on what we’ve been working on, various members of the team dropped by to spill the beans in a special Season Ten Preview video. That’s right: Guilds, Skull of Siren Song Voyages and Safer Seas will all be coming your way soon. Spoilers!
Finally, Season Nine Community Weekend got its own introductory video just like the Wish You Were Here event before it. The new Twitch-based Emissary Grade system meant that the weekend itself encouraged plenty of streaming, watching or both, and more Rare team members helped launch it from the on-site Tavern with hours of chaotic fun and plunder hunting!
Social Channels
Community Weekend was, of course, a massive September social media event and we did all we could to make sure everyone could get involved – from preparing the appropriate freebies and sharing a selection of assets for streamer setups to simply ensuring outfits were on point. Good thing too, as a special bonus Style of Thieves contest was right around the corner! Expect a Community Weekend lookback article full of good vibes and stonks summaries in the near future.
Elsewhere, someone made the mistake of letting the team go rogue with 100 kegs – with predictable results – while for others, looking ahead to Season Ten caused a rather strange fixation on paint. Quietly leaving the TikTok team to get over whatever that was and with the legacy of Legends Week still lurking, pirates traded stories of their legendary deeds, only to get dragged into reminiscing on a few of their legendary fails too. That was no problem though – nobody becomes a true Pirate Legend without sailing headlong into an island or two, right? Right?
And done! All covered for September. We’ll be back in a month to round up October’s occurrences, which will give us a chance to catch our breath because it’s looking so much quieter and – oh right, yes, Season Ten. Not quieter at all. In that case, keep up with everything by following Sea of Thieves on channels of your choice including Twit-X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or Twitch, or the official Forums or Discord. Enjoy the debut of the imminent ‘Super Season’, count yourselves lucky we didn’t call it a ‘Super Spoopy Season’ considering the timing and we’ll catch you back here for more rigorous rounding up next month!
The somewhat larger size is due to updating to the latest version of the Unity Engine. But make no mistake, this is a huge update on a technical level too, and it will change the way you experience the game.
One of the first things you might notice is the enhanced visual feedback during combat. Not only is it sleeker, but there's also a new impact VFX that should make each action feel even more dynamic, and hopefully help you immerse more in combat and visit the combat log even less. As for the VFX animation speed you can tweak it or, if you prefer a minimalist approach, switch them off altogether in the game settings.
When you're out there exploring, expect fewer sneaky mimics outside of dungeons, fewer corpses and more books. I've also revised the species descriptions to make them more immersive and in line with the rich backstory of the world.
Last but not least, there are some more practical improvements: you can now copy information from various panels to your clipboard, and if you've been curious about what on Erannorth each game expansion adds exactly? Well, now there's a neatly organized overview in the main menu.
Last but not least, in the Exalted Heroes Expansion, the Exalted perks have been better integrated, offering both speedier loading times and multiclass compatibility.
If you encounter any issues do let me know, and I'll fix them as soon as possible!
You can read the details in the patch notes below.
Patch Notes - 09/10 # 1.063.8
Misc Changes and Additions
Streamlined and expanded the visual feedback of actions during combat.
During the Chest looting event: mimics will be much rarer outside of dungeons.
Incapacitated enemies will pass their turns even faster.
The fallback event list now includes Serendipity, Lost & Found and Book ex Machina events, which will reduce the amount of encountered corpses when no event requirements are met.
Added impact VFX for most actions.
The animation speed of the impact VFX can be changed in game settings.
VFX can also be disabled completely in game settings.
Reworked the Species descriptions to be more immersive and accurate to the lore.
You can now copy information from the details panel (during Character Creation), from the codex panel, and the combat log to your clipboard.
Added a check list of the available expansions in the main menu along with a short description of the features and content they add.
Exalted Heroes Expansion: Exalted perks are now included in the corresponding .json files directly (instead of getting injected). This both accelerates their loading times and makes them compatible with multiclassing.
Updated to the Unity Engine 2022.3.10f1
New Content
Added 20 new book excerpts.
Bugfixes
Changing the archetype in Character Creation will now correctly reset the details scrollbar to the top.
Fixed a few typos and missing graphics in a couple events.
We are thrilled to meet with you all at the Steam Next Festival! "Lucky Hero" will be updating a demo on October 9th for you , providing you with an exciting sneak peek! ! This demo will showcase part of the content within the game. The aim is to let you understand the specific game mechanics and appreciate its charm. We also look forward to hearing your feedback to help improve the game.
If you find any issues with the monster strength or character symbols in terms of their setup, do not hesitate to let us know.
Introduction of "Lucky Hero":
"Lucky Hero" is a Symbol-building Roguelike game developed by Mora Churrasco Studio. The overall game experience is somewhat similar to traditional card-building Roguelike games, yet it notably stands out with its deluge of innovative systems.
Weapons and Gear have been transformed into symbols on a wheel, with certain spatial relationships existing between symbolsMastering these relationships is fundamental to unlocking the symbols' full potential.
An in-game store system allows you to purchase symbols during battles. This means defeating enemies is not the only purpose of each battle. Accumulating gold and continually strengthening yourself through the symbol shop for future formidable enemies is also a crucial part of the game.
The game has a variety of active and passive skills that can produce unexpected interesting effects when combined with symbols.
Powerful enemies have abundant ways to interfere with the player. Be mindful to clean up your symbols in time!
About Full Version:
The final version of the game will have 3 complete characters, over 300 types of symbols, and even more varieties of monsters and bosses. There will also be additional advanced difficulty levels available.
Where can I post my feedback?
We wholeheartedly welcome your feedback on our game via our Discord. Hearing your impressions and thoughts truly means a lot to us.
Hey there owners! As Blooming Business: Casino players, you’re probably indie game lovers and supporters. And we thank you for that! Buying indie games is the best way to help small studios, and make sure we continue making games you love. As indie studios, we don’t have a big marketing budget to make ourselves known, so most of it comes from players, which is why you are even more important to us. There are so many things that you can do to support your favourite indie games, other than buying them of course, and all of it for free!
Here’s a list of the best ways to support your fav indie games:
The most important of them all… Steam reviews, which we desperately need!
Well, it’s all in the title. Steam reviews might very well be the best way to help an indie game/studio. (Well, apart from buying it, of course).
The more good reviews you get, the more likely players will try your game, Steam will push it on their pages and you'll gain visibility so that potential players find out about your game, because there are A LOT of games on Steam… A good review of a game you like goes a LONG WAY!
But here's the problem: as it is often the case for positive thoughts, there is a silent majority that doesn't think of commenting. We're always more likely to give feedback if we find a problem than if everything is fine…
And as for us, problems we did have when the game came out. It was our very 1st game and a learning experience for us, so we had some balancing, bugs and polishing issues on which players rightfully gave feedback. We worked hard on it, and are confident we now have a smoother running cosy game. We patched the game 5 times in a short period, so our reviews have been a lot better since and we're very happy to see people enjoying the game and recognizing the work we did. But the old reviews are still clouding our overall positive reviews, which is where you can help! We will continue to work on all the feedback you shared with us and respond to your reviews. Stay tuned for more updates!
If you like our game, it would be an amazing help for us if you would leave a positive review. One small step for you, a giant leap for us into having a positive average on Steam and gaining some visibility. Of course, we're not telling you to lie, feel free to give us your honest feedback in any case, that's how we progress. We're also always available for any questions or suggestions you might have!
The power of wishlisting
Indie studios keep asking for this one don’t they? Especially when the game isn’t out yet. Well it’s all about the algorithm yet again! Steam's algorithm pushes the games that already have a lot of wishlists, so for the algorithm to notice a game, it'll already need to have a certain amount of wishlists to gain visibility from the platform. Of course, buying a game is the best way to support it, but sometimes we don’t have the means to buy a game, and it’s perfectly ok. So if you think an indie game looks good, you can support it by wishlisting it, even if you can’t buy it yet or don’t intend to buy it at all, because it’ll help them being broadcasted by Steam. It’s a free and extremely efficient way to help studios!
Taking over Social Media!
Whether it’s liking, sharing, upvoting and most importantly commenting on our posts, it gives us visibility. Even if you have a small account, posts will be seen by your friends, who might want to share it too, and that's how it can get to many views. And well, you know it by now, algorithms love to push content that is already performing, so the more a post is shared, the more it might be seen by people who like similar things.
Of course you're not gonna share everything we post, but if you see a funny/interesting post, feel free to do so. It’s mostly a way for us to broadcast our content and get feedback, because we’re not AAA studios and can’t afford ad campaigns.
As for commenting… people will tell you that comments help your referencing scores, which is true, but most importantly: criticism helps us to know how to improve the game, and support boosts us to do a good job. Feel free to tell us everything you think: if it’s constructive criticism, it will help us know which features to work on, if it’s compliments,it will give us a nice confidence boost that will make us work even harder!
Join the discords
Small studios or games often have discords to help us communicate with our communities. You can usually chat with other players, but also the devs, participate in playtests, and overall help shape the game and its community.
To be perfectly candid, discord communities help us make our games better. This is where players give us the most feedback (along with the steam community pages), and where they send us screenshots of their beautifully decorated casinos (which is something we love seing). But it’s also a good way to talk with other players and get help with potential problems you might have playing the game.
So if you’d like an occasion to talk to the devs and try out games before they’re out or even finished, join indie dev discords. It’s also usually very positive and helpful communities!
TL;DR
The best way to help your favourite indie game studios… Well it’s buying the game. But there are also a lot of free ways to support us, whether it’s wishlisting, reshare/comment on social media, join the discords… But most importantly : leave positive reviews on steam.
Steam reviews help us being seen by more people who might buy the game and in their turn give good reviews. It’s all about communities and dialog. And we can’t help to hear your feedback!
